The Boom of Electric Cars
The boom in EV registrations is a result of the European Union's CO 2 emissions standards, which was implemented in 2020. These regulations limit the amount of carbon dioxide emitted per kilometer by cars. To help spur the switchover, many European governments increased EV subsidy schemes. This could help bring EVs to market before 2020. Ultimately, the cost of buying an EV will be lower than that of a petrol or diesel car, resulting in a higher saving for the buyer.
The combination of promotion actions for EVs determines the amount of demand. Eight of the top 10 metropolitan areas in the world had between 31 and 44 promotion actions in 2016. In contrast, the areas with the lowest EV uptake had fewer than half as many promotion actions. While these measures will help increase demand for electric vehicles, consumer incentives are still a crucial component in the development of the market. The top 11 metro areas in the EU provided substantial incentives for EV buyers. Incentives ranged from $1,500 to $5,500 and included free parking.
The price of electric vehicles is still too high. In addition, the government's tax credits have been phased out, so there is less incentive to purchase one. But as a global trend, electric vehicles are expected to outsell gasoline vehicles. And while the market may not be ready for them yet, the sales numbers are still quite impressive. The cost of batteries will continue to drop, and the production of EVs will rise dramatically.
While EV sales have been on the rise in recent years, the US market remains relatively stagnant. This is largely due to the pandemic, which took its toll on demand. In addition, job losses increased during the pandemic, which led to mass layoffs. Furthermore, the low price of oil has made EVs a hot commodity for investors. If prices continue to drop, electric car sales could reach 60% of the global auto market by 2040.
While the market is still young, EV sales have made considerable progress over the past two years. EV sales have reached a peak in 2019 and are predicted to grow over the next decade. In 2018, BEV and PHEV sales reached over two million units each, accounting for 2.5 per cent of all new cars. In addition, the EVs accounted for more than half of the total domestic market share in China in 2019.
EV sales are predicted to grow more than fourfold by 2030, outpacing the global trend. The growth rate in the United States is expected to be twice that of Europe, but the growth rate in Northern and Western Europe will be much higher. The growth in EVs will also increase the share of electric cars in the automotive industry. So, this is a win-win situation for both EV buyers and the environment.
The boom of electric cars is likely to continue, despite the fact that the market is still small. While the U.S. and Europe are leading the way, the Chinese are also a key region. The fastest growth in EV sales has been in Europe. The continent is projected to account for nearly 70% of all oil consumption in the United States by 2020. A new era of electric vehicles is coming, but it is not a perfect solution for our current transportation system.
Although the U.S. is seeing a surge in EV sales, it is unclear whether the EV market will continue to grow faster. Norway has seen a significant growth in EV sales since 2010, but other countries will have to rely on incentives and other methods to accelerate the transition. However, the boom of electric cars in Europe has been driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether a shift to EVs will happen in the United States before the end of the decade.
The sales of EVs in Europe are booming, but the world outside of the US and China has been slower. The country's massive government subsidies and charging infrastructure are key barriers to EV sales. The country's EV penetration rate is projected to hit 7 percent in 2020. The US, the EU, Japan, and the Netherlands are among the top ten markets for EVs. The boom in EV sales is expected to continue for the rest of the decade. If you're looking to buy an electric vehicle get it on Top New Motorcycles. Good morning, folks, and welcome to today’s statistical maps - our last look at how the ESC 2018 videos are faring on Youtube before the semi-finals!
As expounded on upon this blog many times before, neither on its own is a reliable indicator for victory - the most viewed video either tends to be highly memetic or propped up to a large degree by viewers inside that country - whilst the most liked video is sometimes the one the most people find palatable, but not necessarily the one that will inspire them to get voting. Together with several other criteria, however, they can provide an interesting snapshot into how fans are interacting with the year’s songs.
In terms of views, this year’s song videos on the official ESC Youtube page have been viewed (at the time of writing) a grand total of 69.8 million times - having climbed by over 28 million views in just the past month. Last year, on the dawn of the semi-finals, there was a record high of 22 countries whose videos had accrued more than a million views. With several days left before the final, we have 21 such countries and with a few more on the threshold of hitting a million. There are also already 9 songs with 2m views - with Estonia close by - compared to just seven on the eve of SF1 last year.
Israel continues to be a behemoth towering over all others with its viewcount, chalking up over 17 million views, 38% of which have come in the past month. Spain leapfrogged Bulgaria into second place by adding 2.5 million views to its 5.5 million tally, whilst Czechia managed to grab 4th place from Sweden by getting 2 million views last month, over half their 3.6 million view tally. It’s one of seven countries - in order of most views gained: Poland, Albania, France, Czechia, Norway, Hungary and Cyprus - whose view count is comprised by more than 50% “new views” in the past month. Not for nothing, many of these countries have enjoyed positive momentum in the bookies’ odds too. Meanwhile, with new views comprising less than 30% of all views, Slovenia, Serbia and Russia are the countries whose videos have the most stalled momentum.
When it comes to likes, things are a lot more predictable: the closer we get to the finals, the slightly better the likes-to-dislikes ratio gets for almost every entry, no matter how egregious it is in the eyes of the fandom. There are many reasons for this but hardcore fans getting used to a song is probably a drop in the ocean compared to casual fans hearing the song for the first time and even more casual “patriots” voting for their home country’s entry no matter what. The same is true this year, with the average song’s percentage of likes jumping up by 1.3%. 32 songs have improved their like-dislike ratio in the past month, with only four countries seeing their dislikes grow by 1 percentage point or more: a very motley crew of Albania (-1%), Poland (-1.4%), Israel (-1.4%) and Armenia (-1.6%).
On the flipside of the coin, the most improved in likes - other than the outlier Iceland, who made a new upload of the same video for reasons I can’t fathom except for getting rid of their appalling likes-dislikes ratio (which has improved by 23% on the new video) - are Spain, France (both +3.7%) and San Marino (+3.0%). In terms of most liked overall, the top 5 of last month is almost entirely intact, with the notable change of Spain jumping from 6th most liked video to 1st, whilst Poland dropped from 2nd to 8th. Meanwhile, Russia and San Marino cling resolutely to the bottom of the likes list, with the former being the only song with more dislikes than likes this year. No song since 2014 with more dislikes than likes has qualified, so is this curtains for Julia and Russia’s untarnished record. And will this mean qualification for Lithuania, despite its patchy record and suboptimal running order, and Switzerland despite its woes for Sebalter? The clock is ticking down until we find out! A full data table is available below.

A ‘Great Red Fire In The Sky’ Baffled People 439 Years Ago This Month. A Repeat Now Could Send Us Back In Time

A ‘Great Red Fire In The Sky’ Baffled People 439 Years Ago This Month. A Repeat Now Could Send Us Back In Time
You know what “space weather” is. It occurs when our Sun spews charged particles in the general direction of Earth. They interact with our planet’s protective magnetosphere to cause aurora—those beautiful twisting (mostly) green light shows—visible during the dark Arctic nights of late fall, winter and early spring.
Want to see aurora? So head to the far north, to Alaska … or to London, Portugal and Madrid?
Although aurora are reliably seen only around the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle, sever solar storms push the “auroral oval” further south. The stronger the solar storm, the further south the aurora are sighted. Historical reports of unusual auroras over places that normally never see them can therefore be used as a proxy for the study of solar activity before accurate scientific records began.
And on March 6, 7 and 8, 1582 what’s now known as the “great magnetic storm” brought aurora as far south 29° North latitude.
The subject of a new paper that delves into newly discovered descriptions about this “great aurora,” they are a clue to a solar storm that must have been horrifically strong.
If that happened now it could leave vast populations unable to communicate and without electrical energy.
The Northern Lights and Southern Lights occur most frequently between 64º and 70º North and South latitudes.
In the northern hemisphere that typically means between September and March in Arctic Circle—Alaska, northern Canada, Iceland, and Lapland in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
Colorful Aurora Borealis, Iceland
getty
In the southern hemisphere that means between March and September in the Antarctica Circle—south of New Zealand over the oceans and in Antarctica, so they’re more rarely observed.
Knowing how often severe space weather events occur is important for a modern technological society like ours because one could knock out electrical grids, communication systems and satellites. However, despite the number of sunspots on the Sun—an indication of solar activity—being counted since the invention of the telescope in 1610, we don’t have much data.
And certainly not enough to tease-out generational trends in solar activity to accurately predict when the next super-strong solar storm is likely to hit.
A strong solar storm on March 13 and 14, 1989 caused a blackout in Québec, Canada, though the most important solar event in recent history was the so-called “Carrington event” in 1859 which disrupted the early telegraph systems of North America and Western Europe. It caused aurora to be see as southerly as 20° North. It’s the most powerful geomagnetic storm known to date and would be catastrophic to our modern society.
So what happened in 1582?
Probably caused by a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) on the Sun, for two nights it caused an auroral oval at mid-northern latitudes, which dipped further south on the third night.
It all occurred just before a full Moon, too, which would have lessened the impact of the aurora. This one was big.
Despite the moonlight, strong reddish aurora were sighted over three nights in Zürich, Paris, London, Madrid, and in Évora near Lisbon—at 39º North—from where this text was uncovered by the new research:
“In 1582, on 6 March, a great fire appeared in the sky at the north and lasted three nights.”
In this mock-up you can see northern Lights over Big Ben and London.
getty
Another eye-witness account from Lisbon reads:
“In March 1582, at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, something started in the north band of the sky … all that part of the sky appeared burning in fire flames; it seemed that the sky was burning. At midnight, great fire rays arose above the castle which were dreadful and fearful. Everybody went to the countryside to see this great sign.”
There are also records of “reddish and bluish” aurora on the same dates in southern Japan and in China between 29° North and 36° North.
Of course, there weren’t any power grids or satellites in 1582. So aside from some spectacular and truly once-in-a-lifetime aurora observations, this massive once-a-century solar storm was able to pass without incident.
Not so now.
In fact, a 2013 study by Lloyd’s of London and Atmospheric and Environmental Research concluded that a massive solar storm could cost US$2.5 trillion dollars, and its effects could last for over a year.
Massive solar storms are certainly rare. We just don’t yet know how rare.
Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.

Norway Cycle Tour
Day 8: 74 miles 4816 ft
Today I finished the last 2 ferries. At the first ferry I ended up waiting four hours. I was a bit upset with myself for being so inefficient. I arrived after 1230 and read that the next ferry wouldn’t arrive until 1630. Some cycle tourers from the UK arrived a bit after me and we talked for a bit. They decided to wait until 1430 and ask a ferry arriving then if they would make an extra stop where we were trying to go. I didn’t think this would work and was short on food and unsure of the next town where I could purchase some. I decided to ride the 4 miles back to the last town grocery store and restock. I had lunch there and returned. When I arrived at the waiting area the Brits were gone. I laid down and tried to get a nap before the 1630 ferry arrived. When it did I asked the attendant about the cyclist at 1430. Sure enough, he had made an extra stop than listed on the schedule at their request.
I’m still not sure of the schedule of the second ferry but rode the 20 miles in between at a quick pace and rolled onto the deck just before the ferry pulled away.
On the bright side I ended up riding a shorter distance than planned and staying at a great little camp site for the night.
Day 9: 90 miles 7041 ft
The rain started outside Bergen and didn’t stop all day. I may have enjoyed Bergen more with out the rain but I tend to enjoy the solitude of nature more than big cities anyway. I was met with road construction and heavy traffic. Next time I’ll bring waterproof mittens that actually stay waterproof. I’m still not convinced I need waterproof shoes but maybe I’d add more than one pair of waterproof socks. Those were key when my shoes were wet.
Day 10: 67 miles 4816 ft
I ended up pushing on through the rain and arriving at a camp site after reception had closed. I’m not sure it was a tent site. I only saw motorhomes. After I set the tent up in the rain I took a much needed hot coin operated shower. My sleeping bag was dry and I would have slept well if it wasn’t that the only spot I found to pitch the tent was on a hill. Also, I knew that rain was forecasted for the next day and had planned to allow myself to sit out the rain in the tent if needed. There is an emotional toll to getting pelted in the face with rain all day.
After repeatedly sliding to the foot of the tent I knew I wouldn’t stay to wait out the rain. I woke up before reception opened and packed my soaking things in a drybag. By this time it was 0900, reception would be open. I rolled my bike to the opposite end of the complex and shouldered it while I climbed over a wall to get back on the road. I felt I had paid for anything of value I had used.
The forecast ended up being right and I was in for another solid day of rain. Just as I was getting pounded in another torrential spell near the end of the day I rode out of the cove I was in and the sky cleared. I laughed and yelled enjoying the sun on my face after the last two days. I stopped in a camp site in Lofthus since it was the last one I knew of before my planned hike to Trolltunga the following day.
Day 11: 31 miles 2490 ft and 17 mile hike
I’d heard of the hike to Trolltunga (Troll’s tongue) before coming to Norway. The advice was to start early because the 17 miles was predicted to take between 8 and 12 hours. By the time I arrived at the trailhead it was 1400. I hid my bike and locked it to a tree. Then rushed up the trail at a fast pace. After 2.5 hours I was standing on the tongue. A nice guy from Kazakhstan took some pictures for me.
On the way back I was still hiking at a fast pace when I passed a group of Russian hikers. They had hired a guide who was wearing a red jacket similar to mine. On of the girls in the group reached out and took my arm to lean on as I was passing. She thought I was her guide. By the time she looked up and realized it we had a laugh but I told her it was alright. We ended up hiking the whole way back together. Her english wasn’t amazing but it was better then my russian so we got to know each other through broken language and then said goodbye at the bottom. I continued on to Odda to spend the night.

February Wrap-Up
I technically read 12 books this month, four of which were novellas, and since said novellas have been compiled into one collection I’ll count all four of them as one (even though I did read them all individually). So, that said, I read 8 books this month!
Gasp by Lisa McMann - ⭐⭐⭐
After narrowly surviving two harrowing tragedies, Jules now fully understands the importance of the visions that she and people around her are experiencing. She’s convinced that if the visions passed from her to Sawyer after she saved him, then they must now have passed from Sawyer to one of the people he saved.
That means it’s up to Jules to figure out which of the school shooting survivors is now suffering from visions of another crisis. And once she realizes who it is, she has to convince that survivor that this isn't all crazy—that the images are of something real. Something imminent.
As the danger escalates more than ever before in the conclusion to the Visions series, Jules wonders if she'll finally find out why and how this is happening—before it's too late to prevent disaster.
Good conclusion to the Visions series. I really didn’t like how Jules was so hell-bent on saving perfect strangers but then essentially hated her dad for being mentally ill (namely depressed). If anything, it was her dad who needed saving the most, and unfortunately, she didn’t make the character arc to that realization.
Delirium by Lauren Oliver – ⭐⭐⭐
In an alternate United States, love has been declared a dangerous disease, and the government forces everyone who reaches eighteen to have a procedure called the Cure. Living with her aunt, uncle, and cousins in Portland, Maine, Lena Haloway is very much looking forward to being cured and living a safe, predictable life. She watched love destroy her mother and isn't about to make the same mistake.
But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena meets enigmatic Alex, a boy from the "Wilds" who lives under the government's radar. What will happen if they do the unthinkable and fall in love?
I remember DNFing this book a few years ago, but it was mostly because I wasn’t into reading as much back then. But I finally got to this OG YA book and finally understand the hype that surrounded it back in the times of The Hunger Games, Divergent, etc. This is a much less gruesome dystopia, but a scary concept non the less. I can’t imagine not being allowed to love my family or my friends.
The One Memory of Flora Banks by Emily Barr - ⭐⭐⭐
Seventeen-year-old Flora Banks has no short-term memory. Her mind resets itself several times a day, and has since the age of ten, when the tumor that was removed from Flora’s brain took with it her ability to make new memories. That is, until she kisses Drake, her best friend’s boyfriend, the night before he leaves town. Miraculously, this one memory breaks through Flora’s fractured mind, and sticks. Flora is convinced that Drake is responsible for restoring her memory and making her whole again. So when an encouraging email from Drake suggests she meet him on the other side of the world, Flora knows with certainty that this is the first step toward reclaiming her life.
With little more than the words “be brave” inked into her skin, and written reminders of who she is and why her memory is so limited, Flora sets off on an impossible journey to Svalbard, Norway—the land of the midnight sun—determined to find Drake. But from the moment she arrives in the Arctic, nothing is quite as it seems, and Flora must “be brave” if she is ever to learn the truth about herself, and to make it safely home.
I... what...? This book went in so many different directions very quickly. I don't know of I like how it went, but it did evoke some emotions which is a sign that the book did something right, especially since I rarely get emotional over books.
Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver - ⭐⭐⭐
The old life is dead. But the old Lena is dead too. I buried her. I left her beyond a fence, behind a wall of smoke and flame. In this electrifying follow-up to her acclaimed New York Times bestseller Delirium, Lauren Oliver sets Lena on a dangerous course that hurtles through the unregulated Wilds and into the heart of a growing resistance movement. This riveting, brilliant novel crackles with the fire of fierce defiance, forbidden romance, and the sparks of a revolution about to ignite.
I decided I’m just going to marathon this entire series, novellas included, and I’ll just write a review on the entire series as opposed to writing a little blurb for every book.
Annabel by Lauren Oliver – ⭐⭐⭐
Lena Halloway's mother, Annabel, supposedly committed suicide when Lena was only six years old. That's the lie that Lena grew up believing, but the truth is very different. As a rebellious teenager, Annabel ran away from home and straight into the man she knew she was destined to marry. The world was different then—the regulations not as stringent, the cure only a decade old. Fast forward to the present, and Annabel is consigned to a dirty prison cell, where she nurtures her hope of escape and scratches one word over and over into the walls: Love.
But Annabel, like Lena, is a fighter. Through chapters that alternate between her past and present, Annabel reveals the story behind her failed cures, her marriage, the births of her children, her imprisonment, and, ultimately, her daring escape.
“Delirium book 0.5”, I will include my thoughts on this novella in my series wrap up.
Alex by Lauren Oliver - ⭐⭐⭐
When Alex sacrificed himself to save Lena, he thought he was committing himself to certain death, but what he got was almost worse. Imprisoned and tortured by the guards, his mind forces him to relive a past he would rather forget. But in the dark he grows stronger. Both hopeful and terrified, he fights to find his way back to her and the love he still clings to.
In this digital story that will appeal to fans of Delirium and welcome new admirers to its world, readers will learn of Alex's time after the events of Delirium, as well as the dark past that he has tried to forget.
“Delirium book 1.1”, I will include my thoughts on this novella in my series wrap up.
Hana by Lauren Oliver - ⭐⭐⭐
The summer before they're supposed to be cured of the ability to love, best friends Lena and Hana begin to drift apart. While Lena shies away from underground music and parties with boys, Hana jumps at her last chance to experience the forbidden. For her, the summer is full of wild music, dancing—and even her first kiss.
But on the surface, Hana must be a model of perfect behavior. She meets her approved match, Fred Hargrove, and glimpses the safe, comfortable life she’ll have with him once they marry. As the date for her cure draws ever closer, Hana desperately misses Lena, wonders how it feels to truly be in love, and is simultaneously terrified of rebelling and of falling into line.
“Delirium Book 1.5”, I will include my thoughts on this novella in my series wrap up.
Raven by Lauren Oliver - ⭐⭐⭐
As a teenager, Raven made the split-second decision to flee across the border to the Wilds, compelled to save an abandoned newborn—a baby girl left for dead and already blue from the cold. When she and the baby are taken in by a band of rebels, Raven finds herself an outsider within a tight-knit group. The only other newcomer is an untrustworthy boy known as the Thief until he finally earns himself a new name: Tack.
Now she and Tack are inseparable, committed to each other, the fledgling rebellion, and a future together. But as they both take center stage in the fight, Raven must decide whether the dangers of the revolution are worth risking her dreams of a peaceful life with Tack.
As her story hurtles back and forth between past and present, Raven transforms from a scared girl newly arrived in the Wilds to the tough leader who helps Lena save former Deliria-Free poster boy Julian Fineman from a death sentence. Whatever the original mission may have been, Raven abides by a conviction that she believes to her core: You always return for the people you love.
“Delirium Book 2.5”, I will include my thoughts on this novella in my series wrap up.
Requiem by Lauren Oliver - ⭐⭐⭐
Now an active member of the resistance, Lena has transformed. The nascent rebellion that was underway in Pandemonium has ignited into an all-out revolution in Requiem, and Lena is at the center of the fight. After rescuing Julian from a death sentence, Lena and her friends fled to the Wilds. But the Wilds are no longer a safe haven. Pockets of rebellion have opened throughout the country, and the government cannot deny the existence of Invalids. Regulators infiltrate the borderlands to stamp out the rebels.
As Lena navigates the increasingly dangerous terrain of the Wilds, her best friend, Hana, lives a safe, loveless life in Portland as the fiancée of the young mayor. Requiem is told from the perspectives of both Lena and her friend Hana. They live side by side in a world that divides them until, at last, their stories converge.
I’ll really get into it in my series review but, wHAT KIND OF A FUCKING ENDING WAS THAT???
Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer by Katie Alender - ⭐⭐⭐
Colette Iselin is excited to go to Paris on a class trip. She’ll get to soak up the beauty and culture, and maybe even learn something about her family’s French roots.
But gruesome murders are taking place across the city, putting everyone on edge. And Colette keeps seeing a strange vision: a pale woman in a ball gown and powdered wig, who looks suspiciously like Marie Antoinette.
Colette knows her popular, status-obsessed friends won’t believe her, so she seeks out the help of a charming French boy. Together, they uncover a shocking secret involving a dark, hidden history. When Colette realizes she herself may hold the key to the mystery, her own life is in danger…
I read these books purely for shits and giggles, and I think if you go into this expecting just that, you won’t be disappointed.
Archangel’s Storm by Nalini Singh - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
With wings of midnight and an affinity for shadows, Jason courts darkness. But now, with the Archangel Neha’s consort lying murdered in the jewel-studded palace that was his prison and her rage threatening cataclysmic devastation, Jason steps into the light, knowing he must unearth the murderer before it is too late.
Earning Neha’s trust comes at a price—Jason must tie himself to her bloodline through the Princess Mahiya, a woman with secrets so dangerous, she trusts no one. Least of all an enemy spymaster.
With only their relentless hunt for a violent, intelligent killer to unite them, Jason and Mahiya embark on a quest that leads to a centuries-old nightmare… and to the dark storm of an unexpected passion that threatens to drench them both in blood.
I just love this whole series. I was missing my fave Illium but you know what, this book gave me a whole new appreciation for Jason. Also, I discovered I love Mahiya so yeah, all in all, me happy!
Number of books read: 8
Number of pages read: 2647 Average rating: 3.2
Favourite book this month: Archangel’s Storm. As I said, I adore this series and will continue on with the… billions of other books Nalini pumps out.
Least favourite book this mouth: Requiem. I was just so disappointed in the end to that entire series…

C-sections might be relaxing the evolutionary pressure against big babies
reader comments 1
Theoretical biologist Philipp Mitteröcker is intrigued by the puzzle of dangerous human childbirth. Unlike other species, human babies are often too big for the birth canal, leading to dangerous—and possibly fatal—obstructed labor. Last year, Mitteröcker and his colleagues published a mathematical model that showed how the mixture of evolutionary pressures acting on humans would inevitably lead to an ongoing risk of obstructed labor in our species.
The model also suggested that C-sections are changing the rules of the game by increasing the likelihood that large babies and their mothers survive childbirth and pass on genes that promote this head/pelvis mismatch. The model predicted that we'd see an increasing risk of obstructed labor (and need for C-sections) over generations—but there was no real-world evidence of that happening.
Now, in a new paper, Mitteröcker and colleagues have published empirical evidence that this is indeed the case: women who were born by C-section seem to have a higher risk of needing a C-section themselves. And the real-world increase in risk is similar to what their model predicts.
How many C-sections, and why?
That conclusion sounds cut and dried, but the evidence is far muddier than it might seem. For a start, the rate of C-sections in industrialized countries is far higher than the rate of obstructed births. There are other medical reasons to have a C-section and plenty of non-medical reasons, too. Most medical data just records the rate of C-sections and not always the reasons.
Even if the data does record how many of the C-sections were due to obstructed births, not all obstructed births are caused by the mismatch in baby size and pelvis size (called fetopelvic disproportion, or FPD). Even if medical data sometimes tells us which C-sections were needed because of obstructed labor, it won't tell us how many cases of obstructed labor were caused by FPD.
All of this means that it’s difficult to figure out how many C-sections were a result of a head/pelvis mismatch and whether this rate might be increasing over time. Which is the only thing relevant to the specific evolutionary pressures in Mitteröcker's model.
Finally, there’s the question of how much of this risk can be passed down genetically. Environmental factors like nutrition and cultural factors (like norms surrounding birth) are likely to play an important role—and there’s the additional complication that any baby is also carrying its father’s genes. The picture is pretty tangled.
Intergenerational risk
But even this messy data could yield clues if you look in the right place. Mitteröcker and his colleagues went in search of cross-generational data that could show whether rates of this pregnancy complication might be increasing.
A Swedish dataset of more than 2.5 million people suggests that mothers were 1.66 times more likely to have an obstructed labor if they themselves had been born following obstructed labor. In other words, if the general risk of this problem hovers around two percent, these women had a risk of around 3.32 percent. This is a lower increase than the model, which predicts an increase from two percent to around five percent. The difference can possibly be explained by the messy real-world data, compared to the simplified assumptions of the model.
A study done in Norway also found an inherited increase in risk between mothers and daughters, but no link through the paternal side. That is, fathers who were born by C-section didn’t seem to increase the risk of this complication for their partners. That’s a bit confusing because, presumably, fathers would pass on genes that contribute to the size of the baby.
Mitteröcker agrees that it’s a surprising result: “We would expect the father’s genome to play a role, but I don’t know if the data we have is fine enough to see that,” he told Ars. “The size of the baby is also environmentally driven via nutrition and depends on the mother’s physiology.”
Without knowing more about how, exactly, genetics contributes to this issue, predicting how the father’s genome would be expected to play a role is challenging.
Does this mean more C-sections are a bad thing?
There’s currently a ruckus about the high rate of C-sections in the industrialized world, with many people pointing to the potential harms of unnecessary surgical births. People might try to use this paper to claim that a high rate of C-sections is increasing the risk of childbirth, but that would be a misunderstanding of the evidence.
If a mother chooses to have a C-section for non-medical reasons, there’s no reason to think she had an especially high risk of complications in the first place. So there’s no reason to think that she’s passing on a higher risk of dangerous childbirth. Similarly, C-sections done for medical reasons other than fetopelvic disproportion shouldn’t increase the risk for subsequent generations.
The increase in risk comes only when a C-section saved the life of a mother, baby, or both when they would otherwise have died in childbirth. That mother and baby have the chance to live, which includes potentially passing on the genes that mean a greater need for C-sections in the future. Because we have the medical technology to handle this, this isn’t a detrimental change—and it’s a relatively small increase. There’s no reason to think that all humans in the future will be born by C-section.
Despite the uncertainties in the recent study, we can draw some lessons. For one thing, it’s probably worth getting more detailed statistics on obstructed labor so we can understand the issues better. It’s also reasonable for doctors to consider family risk factors in childbirth.
Mitteröcker thinks the evidence could help us to think about how to distribute research funding. Because excellent medical care is improving the chances of smaller babies, the loss of selection against large babies might also be diminishing, counteracting the effect of the C-sections. “We should support research in neonatology to ensure that smaller babies have good survival rates,” says Mitteröcker. Likewise, he says, larger pelvises might be lower-risk for childbirth, but they come along with a higher risk of pelvic floor disorders, like organ prolapse. “There should also be investment into research into pelvic floor disorders.”
This research is still in its infancy. There are plenty more questions to be answered—about the genetics of fetopelvic disproportion risk, the role that neonatal care might play in helping smaller babies to survive, and whether other data sets show the same increase in risk. But the real-world evidence supports the original mathematical model, and so it helps us to understand why we’re in this sticky evolutionary situation at all.

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- After four days of high drama, low farce and long periods of tedium, the OPEC+ group of countries, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, finally agreed to a record cut in their oil production in response to the coronavirus-triggered collapse in demand. But the deal will come under pressure when the world becomes a more normal place again. The drama was provided by Mexico refusing to accept its allotted cut. The farce followed when the country’s oil minister left the virtual OPEC+ meeting to hold separate talks with her U.S. and Canadian counterparts, while the other energy ministers agonized for hours, and then for days, over how to respond. The tedium? Well, that was just the bits in between.Mexico was asked to cut 400,000 barrels a day of production in the first phase of an OPEC+ deal that would run for an unprecedented two years. It offered one-quarter of that, and from a slightly higher baseline than what was asked for.An unlikely white knight appeared to ride to the group’s rescue on Friday in the form of U.S. President Donald Trump. He proposed an arrangement with Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (known as AMLO) in which 250,000 barrels a day of the “market-driven” decline in U.S. output would be rebranded as “Mexican.”But don’t be fooled: That wouldn’t have taken a single additional barrel of oil off the market beyond those that would disappear anyway because of the Covid-19-prompted collapse in demand. Eventually, after nearly four days of trying to persuade the Mexican government to budge, the Saudis and the Russians finally decided to cut their losses and swallow Mexico’s lack of genuine commitment. The alternative would have been to allow the commodity markets to open on Monday morning with the group still in disarray and to risk another big price slump. In fairness, the OPEC+ deal is historically grand in its scope, given the size of the cuts and their duration, although it’s questionable how much value there is in setting output targets two years hence, when so much remains uncertain. The 20 producers taking part will initially cut output by 9.7 million barrels a day, with all but Mexico reducing output by 23% for two months — May and June. As it stands now, Mexico’s cuts will end with the first phase of the deal, when it will presumably have to leave the OPEC+ group. The reduction for the remaining 19 countries will taper to 7.7 million barrels a day until the end of the year, and then to 5.8 million barrels for another 16 months, until April 2022.Don’t be surprised if the headline numbers published by OPEC+ are even bigger than these. There has been some suggestion that the official figure could be closer to 12.5 million barrels a day, but that would be achieved by raising the starting production numbers for Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, who have all boosted production this month, leaving their real targets unchanged. This is smoke and mirrors to try to make the cuts look even more substantial. The deal raises some even bigger questions than Mexico. Russia, for example, is to cut its output by 2.5 million barrels a day over the next three weeks. Really? Igor Sechin, head of state-controlled oil company Rosneft, was a fierce critic of Russia’s modest contribution to previous reductions. I can imagine how he’ll react when he’s told his company has to cut output by almost 1 million barrels a day by May 1.The contribution from Friday’s meeting of G-20 energy ministers — which followed Thursday’s marathon OPEC+ call — was, to put it mildly, underwhelming. India’s minister mentioned filling the country’s strategic oil reserve, but there were no concrete new offers from the group. With oil prices on the floor, building up reserves makes sense anyway, and China and India have already started. But storage space is limited. The U.S. has room for another 77 million barrels in its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, but Congress refused last month to approve the budget for an initial 30-million-barrel purchase. Oil traders and analysts estimate that China could buy an extra 80 million to 100 million barrels this year. Meanwhile, the Indian government is asking state-run refiners to buy 15 million barrels of crude from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq to fill its tanks. Beyond those three countries, there’s little storage capacity elsewhere.U.S. Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette told the G-20 meeting that the oil market collapse will impose some 2 million barrels a day of American output cuts by the end of the year without any government intervention. Some predictive models, he added, see the drop as big as 3 million barrels. Russia previously rejected such “free market” cuts, arguing that production falling in response to a lack of demand is not an output reduction. But in the end it capitulated, along with the other OPEC+ countries. There was no mention in the OPEC+ communique of the deal being dependent on the actions of anyone else outside the group. Other non-OPEC+ producers, including Canada, Brazil and Norway have also contributed “market-driven” output cuts. This is the second time in less than five years that Saudi Arabia’s attempt to pursue a pump-at-will policy has collapsed. After just one month, this one has lasted an even shorter time than the previous effort, brought to an end by the OPEC+ deal with Russia and other countries toward the end of 2016.But these are quite clearly extraordinary times, with an unprecedented demand collapse. The Historic Oil Price Truce Won’t Last
(Bloomberg Opinion) — After four days of high drama, low farce and long periods of tedium, the OPEC+ group of countries, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, finally agreed to a record cut in their oil production in response to the coronavirus-triggered collapse in demand. In fairness, the OPEC+ deal is historically grand in its scope, given the size of the cuts and their duration, although it’s questionable how much value there is in setting targets two years hence, when so much remains uncertain. The 20 producers taking part will initially cut output by 9.7 million barrels a day, with all but Mexico reducing production by 23% for two months — May and June. Don’t be surprised if the war over market share between the Saudis, the Russians and the Americans resumes once the lockdowns ease and people want oil again. This is a temporary truce rather than lasting peace between the three biggest producers.(This column was updated with confirmation of the Opec+ deal.)This column does not necessarily reflect the opinion of Bloomberg LP and its owners.Julian Lee is an oil strategist for Bloomberg. This is how much we owe these animals, and this is what we stand to lose by killing them. – Maneka Gandhi • Happiness is the twinkle in your grandmother’s eye as you reverse the tractor off her legs. – Hugh Laurie • He (David Beckham) does have a huge one, though. He does. You can see it in the advert. It is all his. It is like a tractor exhaust pipe! – Victoria Beckham • His herding instinct is so strong that he confuses tractors on a baseball field for sheep. He was hospitalized twice. Once by a line drive and once for attacking a tractor tread. – Tom Hayden • How much courage does it take to fire up your tractor and plow under a crop you spent six or seven years growing? How much courage to go on and do that after you’ve spent all that time finding out how to prepare the soil and when to plant and how much to water and when to reap? How much to just say, “I have to quit these peas. Peas are no good for me, I better try corn or beans. – Stephen King • I bought an ant farm. I don’t know where I am going to get a tractor that small! – Steven Wright • I buy a tractor two years ago, and four-fifths of the tractor manual is about not tipping over, not raising the bucket high enough to hit high-tension wire… not killing yourself, basically. And in that manual, I found out – and it cost me a thousand dollars – that when the tractor is new, 10 hours into use of the tractor, you have to re-torque the lug nuts. If you don’t, you will oval the holes. This is buried between the moron warnings. I never found it. I take the tractor in for its regular servicing, and they say my wheels are gone. How am I supposed to know that? “It’s in the manual.” – P. J. O’Rourke • I can’t write on the road. I have to be home. I have to be around all those rusted tractors and dilapidated fences and things like that, because it just grounds me in a way that I can’t find in a hotel room. – John Fullbright • I did as much as I could: raising chickens, pushing an ice-cream cart, bagging walnuts, driving a tractor on a beet farm, working on the railroad. I think this eclectic career helped me a lot in life. – Charles R. Schwab • I didn’t get much peace, but I heard in Norway that Russia might well become a huge market for tractors soon. – Henry Ford • I do not like football, which I think of as a game in which two tractors approach each other from opposite directions and collide. Besides, I have contempt for a game in which players have to wear so much equipment. Men play basketball in their underwear, which seems just right to me. – Anna Quindlen • I don’t know of a better argument in favor of farming with horses than trying to start an old tractor in the winter time. – Gene Logsdon • I dont know how the other senators see me. I hope they see me as a farmer. Thats really what I am. But I dont think they see me on a tractor or fixing equipment. I hope they see me grounded, as somebody who has common sense.- Jon Tester • I drove a tractor almost as soon as I could reach the pedals. – Sheri L. Dew • I had no idea ‘Big Green Tractor’ was going to be as big a hit as it was. You just can’t predict those things. – Jason Aldean • I had to jump on the tractor and do my chores. I would have just killed to be in town, to be able to Rollerblade hand-in-hand with somebody I had a crush on. I just wanted to get off the farm, to find my outlet. – Garrett Hedlund • I have a 60-acre farm in North Carolina, and I have a tractor and a farmhouse. As soon as I groom the land, I want to put cabins around and have a place where people can write and hang out. It’ll be either that or an all-black nudist colony. – Zach Galifianakis • I haven’t seen a tractor working all day. The country has gone sane and got back to horses. Farmers all look worse, but they feel better. – Will Rogers • I remember driving the tractor on our farm, and Tim McGraw would be on the radio. I’d find myself walking out of class, singing his songs. And then Tim ended up playing my father in ‘Friday Night Lights.’ It was surreal. – Garrett Hedlund • I said I would do all the films about the commercials, and the films about ball-bearings and Ford tractors and so on, if once a year they gave me money for a free film. – Karel Reisz • I spend hours mowing the lawn in absolutely straight lines on my tractor. If it’s not right, I do it again. – Britt Ekland • I take my vacation on the combine and tractor. – Jon Tester • I used to help my grandfather on the farm, driving tractors, raising crops and animals. I used to feed some of the baby cows and pigs, and I had to be no older than 7 or 8. Then at about 9 or 10 I started driving tractors. It showed me at an early age what hard work was all about and how dedicated you have to be, no matter what you do. – Tyson Chandler • I used to own an ant farm but had to give it up. I couldn’t find tractors small enough to fit it. – Steven Wright • I was working on the farm to get in shape, about a mile away from my parents. You know, I did everything as a kid to stay in shape – jogging, work on the farm, driving the tractor. I’ll never forget. – Guy Lafleur • I welcome opposing viewpoints, but I should warn you that you’ll be facing off against the 2nd-place finisher at the 1981 Charleston County High-School Debate Tournament. And whatever became of that county champ who argued in favor of tractor safety modifications? Last time I checked, she didn’t have her own show. – Stephen Colbert • I would say my first golf memory was asking who Arnold Palmer was when he was always on the Pennzoil commercials. When I was a little kid I watched a lot of sports, but I didn’t watch a lot of golf, and this guy was always on a tractor. – Mike Greenberg • I’d rather do manual labor than sit behind a desk. And as my grandparents got older, I’d fly out there and help out around the farm. We’d tear barns down; we’d build barns. I’d rather be outside rolling hay or driving the tractors. – Kellan Lutz • If I hadn’t become a golfer, I doubt I’d be wealthy, because I don’t have the sort of ego that drives a person all day long. I might have wound up driving a tractor. – Fuzzy Zoeller • If we were to go back in time 100 years and ask a farmer what he’d like if he could have anything, he’d probably say he wanted a horse that was twice as strong and ate half as many oats. He would not say he wanted a tractor. The point is, technology changes things so fast that many people aren’t sure what the best solutions to their problems might be. – Philip Quigley • If your stomach blocks your view of your feet, cover it up! The only people who should be wearing belly shirts are people who don’t have bellies. Now those little baby spare tires are kinda cute; tractor tires aren’t! Especially if they’ve got hair on them! – Jeff Foxworthy • I’m an outdoor nut. If I’m not working, I’m on a tractor on my farm, hunting, fishing or climbing a mountain. – Jeff Foxworthy • I’m working on a second cookbook and am working on my love story, ‘Black Heels to Tractor Wheels. – Ree Drummond • It is unthinkable to have a British countryside that doesn’t have actual functioning farmers riding tractors, cows in fields, things like that. – Bill Bryson • It’s as if the whole notion of growing soil is something only lunatics would think about. But why not grow soil? Does anything make more sense than growing soil? Isn’t that more important than tractors, trucks, silos, barns, county fairs and country music? Of course it is. And yet to the lion’s share of American farmers, the very notion of growing soil is just plain silly.- Joel Salatin • It’s good way to relax when I come home from the road. When you’re out there on the tractor there’s nobody to bother you. – Sterling Marlin • It’s like if every single male artist dressed up as farmers. In every video they were on a farm. Whether it was Jason Derulo or Oasis, they’re always on a tractor, they’re always surrounded by sheep and always in boots. And all the songs are about enjoying farming, and this is all you’ve had for 10 years – you’d think you were going mad. – Caitlin Moran • It’s us fun being a horse when the tractor comes along, or the blacksmith when the car comes along. – Warren Buffett • James Davison took me out to show me where Karl is living right now and where hes going to build. Karl wasnt at home. He was out there somewhere in the woods riding on some Caterpillar or some kind of tractor. But I figured wed at least knock on the door to see if he was there. His wife answered the door. So we got to meet Kay before Karl. – Terry Bradshaw • Let the Black man go – stop lying to us that you love us. And if you really love us, let us go and give us some of this territory that we can call our own; and give us the billions of dollars that we can get started with land and with tractors and the things that will make us an independent nation. – Louis Farrakhan • Lincolnshire is the Idaho of England. You were either going to drive a tractor for the rest of your life or head for the city to work in a factory. – Bernie Taupin • Maybe I should just go home and ride my tractor. – Chuck Grassley • Most of us stand poised at the edge of brilliance, haunted by the knowledge of our proximity, yet still demonstrably on the wrong side of the line, our dealings with reality undermined by a range of minor yet critical psychological flaws (a little too much optimism, an unprocessed rebelliousness, a fatal impatience or sentimentality). We are like an exquisite high-speed aircraft which for lack of a tiny part is left stranded beside the runway, rendered slower than a tractor or bicycle. – Alain de Botton • My father did get enough money to buy mules. We didn’t have tractors, but he bought mules, wagons, cultivators and some farming equipment. As soon as he bought that and decided to rent some land, because it was always better if you rent the land, but as soon as he got the mules and wagons and everything, somebody went to our trough – a white man who didn’t live very far from us – and he fed the mules Paris Green, put it in their food and it killed the mules and our cows. – Fannie Lou Hamer • My father kept me busy from dawn to dusk when I was a kid. When I wasn’t pitching hay, hauling corn or running a tractor, I was heaving a baseball into his mitt behind the barn… If all the parents in the country followed his rule, juvenile delinquency would be cut in half in a year’s time. – Bob Feller • My mother told me I said to her, at age three, ‘I’m going to go to Italy and get my father in a tractor.’ ‘You’ve never seen quite so fierce a little boy as you were,’ she told me. She tried to explain that I couldn’t get my father in a tractor. Apparently I looked at her and narrowed my eyes and said, ‘In that case, I’m going in a double-decker bus,’ and stomped off. Which is kind of funny, but it’s very sad, as well. – Roger Waters • Of course, it’s always bad to lose, of course it’s always a hardship when you lose to yesterday’s miners or yesterday’s tractor drivers. But life is life. It’ll surely go on. – Vladimir Putin • One of the first sights that shocked me, when I came to Israel in 1921, was an Arab turning over a field with a very primitive plow; pulling the plow were an ox and a woman. Now, if it means that we have destroyed this romantic picture by bringing in tractors, combines, and threshing machines, this is true: we have. – Golda Meir • Programs that pay farmers not to farm often devastate rural areas. The reductions hurt everyone from fertilizer companies to tractor salesmen. – Dick Armey • Some of the environmental lobbyists of the western nations are the salt of the earth, but many of them are elitists. They have never experienced the physical sensation of hunger. They do their lobbying from comfortable office suites in Washington or Brussels. If they lived just one month amid the misery of the developing world, as I have for fifty years, they would be crying out for tractors, and fertilizer, and irrigation canals, and be outraged that fashionable elitists back home were trying to deny them these things. – Norman Borlaug • Sometimes I feel people think I live on a commune but I don’t. We are all solar, though. There are no power lines. It’s mostly farmers, so everyone who has tractors uses bio-diesel. – Woody Harrelson • Technically speaking, you drive like a rabid chicken who has hijacked a tractor. – Sarah Rees Brennan • That stupid saying “What you don’t know can’t hurt you” is ridiculous. What you don’t know can kill you. If you don’t know that tractor trailer trucks hurt when hitting you, then you can play in the middle of the interstate with no fear – but that doesn’t mean you won’t get killed. – Dave Ramsey • That’s life. We all go through the tractor blades now and then. We all get bruised, and we all get cut. Sometimes the blade cuts deep. The lucky ones come through with a few scratches, a little blood, but even that isn’t the most important thing. The most important thing is having someone there to scoop you up, to hold you tight, and to tell you everything is all right. – Vicki Myron • That’s the great thing about a tractor. You can’t really hear the phone ring. – Jeff Foxworthy • That’s where I live, a junkyard in a neighborhood of junkyards. We have three tractors from the 1940s and ’50s, several old pickup trucks, and a pile of scrap metal. – Bonnie Jo Campbell • The basic thing a man should know is how to change a tyre and how to drive a tractor. Whatever that bearded dude is doing on the Dos Equis beer commercials sets the bar. That’s your guy. Every man should be aiming to be like him. The beard is just the tip of the iceberg. – Timothy Olyphant • The infantryman slithers in the mud, while many teams of horses are needed to drag each gun forward. All wheeled vehicles sink up to their axles in the slime. Even tractors can only move with great difficulty. A large portion of our heavy artillery was soon stuck fast… The strain that all this caused our already exhausted troops can perhaps be imagined. – Gunther Blumentritt • The only difference between men and women is that women are able to create new little human beings in their bodies while simultaneously writing books, driving tractors, working in offices, planting crops – in general, doing everything men do. – Erica Jong • The things that don’t happen to us that we’ll never know didn’t happen to us. The nonstories. The extra minute to find the briefcase that makes you late to the spot where a tractor trailer mauled another car instead of yours. The woman you didn’t meet because she couldn’t get a taxi to the party you had to leave early from. All of life is a series of nonstories if you look at it that way. We just don’t know what they are. – Anita Shreve • There are only three things that can kill a farmer: lightning, rolling over in a tractor, and old age. – Bill Bryson • We know that urban farms require less fuel for tractors and transport, but community gardens don’t plant themselves. – Van Jones • Well, I have a farm in Vermont that’s my main residence, where I do lots of digging and mowing, and ride tractors – just so you don’t get the wrong idea that I’m too girlie! – Tim Daly • When a country is in harmony with the Tao, the factories make trucks and tractors. When a country goes counter to the Tao, warheads are stockpiled outside the cities. There is no greater illusion than fear, no greater wrong than preparing to defend yourself, no greater misfortune than having an enemy. Whoever can see through all fear will always be safe. – Laozi • When I was still at school, I’d help Dad at the concrete yard he had prior to the garden centre. I was doing things there, like driving the tractors and forklifts, that most kids my age couldn’t. – Rick Astley • When will they make a tractor that can furnish the manure for farm fields and produce a baby tractor every spring? – George Erik Rupp • Why does a three-year-old, and it’s usually boys, want to drive the tractor or have machinery and be in control of it? I don’t know. Why wouldn’t you ask to boil a kettle or something? Maybe you would, I dunno. – Michael Fassbender • You can tell this by the program the federal government had to train 2,400 tractor drivers. They would have trained Negro and white together, but this man, Congressman Jamie Whitten, voted against it and everything that was decent. So, we’ve got to have somebody in Washington who is concerned about the people of Mississippi. – Fannie Lou Hamer • You know, when Arnold Palmer came on TV with an old tractor and told me to buy Pennzoil, I bought that, and when Dale Jarrett advertises UPS, I can go along with that, too. But I don’t think having an 18-year-old, somebody who’s probably gotten five packages in his life and they were all ‘Girls Gone Wild’ videos, tell me what delivery service I should use would have much effect on me. – Kyle Petty • You might be a redneck if on your first date you had to ask your Dad to borrow the keys to the tractor. – Jeff Foxworthy
