A Day in the Life of a #WFHospo Worker
Tumblr media
Here at Third Place, we’re hospitality people. We’ve been in the industry for decades, and we know it inside and out. We’re confident with the startup business-y side of things, and building our network is easy enough, since we’re so familiar with what hospitality businesses are looking for in a partnership. But there are some things that are so outside our regular wheelhouse that outsourcing them is the smartest choice — and one of those is digital marketing. That’s where Fractal comes in. Fractal is a Brisbane-based but fully remote-working marketing agency that specialises in working with startups. They do great work for us, especially because they experience Third Place first hand. Andy, Fractal’s Performance Marketing Director, and Dwayne, one of their Data Analysts, both live on Brisbane’s northside, close to Caboolture. They regularly meet up at a Third Place to work, so we asked for their story. Here’s a first-hand look at how a remote-first business like Fractal can use Third Place.
What Does a #WFHospo Day Look Like?
Andy and Dwayne both wake up around 7am on a Friday morning. Andy gets his daughter ready and off to school, while Dwayne downs a protein shake and gets in a weightlifting session. They both skip the usual home breakfast and coffee – gotta save room for the good stuff, after all. Come 8:00, the two of them have packed up their laptops and set out to Basil & Vine, a great place in Burpengary that does Italian-style breakfasts and specialty coffee in the mornings, and killer pizzas and pastas in the evenings. They’ll say their g’days to the team behind the counter and post up at one of the wall-side tables where they can plug in. The laptops stay away for now, though, because it’s breakfast first.
Dwayne is a man of habit – he grabs the Italian Bolognese Calzone and a vanilla milkshake every time. He’s not much of a coffee guy, but he loves anything high-protein, and once he’s filled up he’s ready to work.
Andy is more experimental. In the time the two have been working from Basil & Vine, he’s worked his way through the whole savoury side of the menu and most of the sweet. Though he says he’s a sucker for the Il Benedictus’s garlic and lemon focaccia, so that’s been a repeat order. Then he’ll be double-fisting coffees and juices for the rest of the day.
Once the Fractal boys have eaten, the laptops come out and they get to work. By this time it’s usually around 9am, so they check in with the rest of the Fractal team on Slack, check on what tasks need to be done, and knuckle down. Basil & Vine closes at 2pm, so around 1:45 they’ll start packing up and pay the bill with the Fractal-issued Third Place prepaid cards on their phones. That card is covered by Fractal owner and founder Gerard, who loves it because it’s a great way to keep his team engaged and happy, plus he gets detailed reports on card balances, what cafes his team uses, and he can claim the costs as workplace expenses. Then Dwayne and Andy head back home to finish up the day from their home offices.
What Gets Done on a #WFHospo Day?
One of the best parts of working remotely is getting to set your own schedule, cut down on travel times, and have a better work-life balance. But one of the trade-offs is that you can often lose out on the collaborative side of working in a team. Of course, we’re all well-acquainted with Zoom and its ilk by now, but we’re also acquainted with the fatigue that comes along with constantly staring at a screen while being on back-to-back video calls for a whole day. That’s what Andy and Dwayne love the most about working from Basil & Vine: since they’re both on the data team, they can easily collaborate in a casual space that’s not too disruptive. They use this time to analyse ad performance, figure out what’s working and what’s not, and create bespoke strategies for each client for the next week. While they could do these things from home, being face-to-face once a week has also helped Andy and Dwayne build a real friendship, and they consequently enjoy their work more.
By heading out to a Third Place every Friday, Andy and Dwayne get to enjoy the best parts of their remote job while still enjoying the benefits of working in the same physical space. They can build a solid working relationship, collaborate on client strategies from a positive headspace, and overall boost their morale every week. Plus they get the boss to cover a perfect meal from Basil & Vine! If you or your remote employees could boost productivity and morale with these same benefits, you can head over to third-place.org to learn more about how it all works. Thanks for reading!

Sweet Pea x Reader - Reggie x Reader
AN: I’m trying to get back into the swing of things sorry this took so long to get out but I do love it! I hope y’all do too! This was requested by my boo @theflameofdeath! All mistakes are my own, I do not own any gifs I use. Thanks to my beta @xserpentlife as always! This is work of fiction I do not own the characters or the shows used.
Word Count - 3433
Requested Yes - Hey boo! So I’m rewatching Friends and I got to S8 E12 and I was wondering if you could do a thing about Joey and Rachel’s plotline but with SP and the reader? Basically the reader hasn’t been on a date in a while/she’s only been on dates with bad guys and SP (her best friend) takes her out on like a friend date to try and cheer her up but he ends up actually falling for her but she still shows no signs of being interested in him and your choice if he tells her or not :)
Warnings: Angst, pregnancy, slight language.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You sat on the couch flipping through the channels trying to numb your mind. You pressed a hand to your stomach smiling as it fluttered. “Hi little one. What’s got you moving?”
As the words left your lips the front door opened Sweet Pea coming through smiling at you. “Hey pretty girl”
“Hey! Look I’m now my own table.” You smiled as you balanced a pop can on your protruding stomach.
Sweet Pea laughed coming to sit down next to you. “Hey Y/N/N I’m taking this girl out in a few days know of any place to take her?”
“Drew’s Cafe in Greenwood it’s romantic, it’s got great food. I’m sure one of your fancy girls would like it.”
Sweet Pea pulled a face. “My fancy girls?”
“Yeah you know those Northside and Greendale girls you keep getting to go on dates with you. All fancy girls Pea. Oh, and then afterwards you could take her to the Wyrm or some fancy bar for drinks. Or go listen to music or dancing… OH! TAKE HER DANCING.”
“You sure are listing a lot of ways to postpone sex Y/N/N.”
You smacked him in the arm. “I miss dating. Getting dressed cute, going to Pops or shooting pool at the Wyrm. It was so much fun. I won’t be able to do that for so long. Not that sitting here worrying about birthing a seventeen pound baby is not fun.”
Sweet Pea took the pop can off of your stomach taking a drink before placing it on the coffee table turning more fully to you. “You know what. Why don’t I take you out?”
You turned shocked. “Pea you don’t want to go out with me. With all of this. I’m a pregnant girl not someone you can take out and then get laid.”
Sweet Pea scoffed. “I do though. C’mon it will be fun. We can go to Pop’s then go dancing at the Wyrm, if you are up for it. It will take your mind off of all this baby shit and things spreading out and rippin-”
You leaned over placing your hand over Sweet Pea’s mouth. “Okay… okay! I will go with you if you stop talking about that.”
Sweet Pea smirked. “Okay tomorrow night. Six O’clock.”
You bit your lip smiling. “Okay.”
Tumblr media
You stood in the bathroom. The dark green maternity dress hugging you, as you put the finishing touches on your face. You leaned out of the bathroom as the doorbell sounded throughout the trailer.
“Pea! Can you get the door?”
The doorbell sounded again. “Pea?” You sighed stepping out of the bathroom heading to the front door. You pulled it open confused looking back towards the hallway that lead to Sweet Pea’s door.
“Pea? What are you doing here? I thought you were in your room?”
“I’m picking you up for our date. These are for you.” Sweet Pea smiled bringing a handful of sunflowers out from behind his back handing them to you.
“Oh Pea, sunflowers are my favorite.”
Sweet Pea smiled coming in from outside as you pulled a cup down from the cabinet filling it with water and placing the sunflowers in it.
“This is starting to feel like a real date. Although I have morning sickness, and I’m wearing underwear that comes up to my bra line.” You laughed.
“What do you mean, this is a real date. Here.” Sweet Pea looked around. “Nice place you got here. Pizza boxes, serpent stuff, oh a subscription to playboy. My kind of woman.”
You let out a laugh rolling your eyes. “I’d like to meet this roommate you speak of he sounds amazing.”
“He is, but he’s very protective of me so you better watch yourself.” You smirked.
“He good looking?”
“Mhmm.”
“Must be hard to keep your hands off of him.” Sweet Pea smirked winking.
“Eh. I’m pretty sure he’s gay.” you laughed.
Sweet Pea faltered breaking his charade. “Hey you are no fun. What the hell Y/N/N.”
“You started it Pea.” You smiled as you linked your arm through his letting him lead you outside. “The truck?”
“Yeah Fogarty let me borrow it. Figured with your uh, situation that the bike probably wasn’t the best way to go.”
“Yeah I probably wouldn’t look very good on a bike right now.”
Sweet Pea stopped. “You would look stunning on a bike. Don’t talk like that.”
You rolled your eyes but nodded as Sweet Pea opened the truck door for you closing it as you got in. You smiled as the soft tunes of your favorite station played once the truck started.
“So where are you taking me?”
Sweet Pea smiled. “Well miss ‘I’m not a fancy girl’, you’ll just have to see.”
You playfully smacked him as the truck pulled into Pops. “How’d you know Pops was my favorite?”
“I take pride in knowing my dates.” Sweet Pea winked getting out of the truck. He came back over opening your door.
“You know you don’t have to do that.”
“Open your door? It’s a date Y/N I’m going to.”
Sweet Pea lead you to a corner booth pulling the table out slightly towards him. You glared. “I’m pregnant Pea but I can fit in a Pops booth.”
“I know I just like the table closer to me is all.”
You rolled your eyes not calling him out on his lie as Veronica stepped to the booth. She smiled at the two of you. “Hi guys, what can I get you?”
“Hey V, can I have the bacon burger but instead of fries another bacon burger?” You questioned making her laugh.
“Actually Veronica just put in an order for 3 bacon burgers with fries with two cherry shakes and can you bring out like a few strips of bacon super crunchy so miss cravings over here can put it in her shake.”
Veronica laughed as she took the menus from the table. “Yeah it will be up shortly. I’ll bring out some water beforehand.”
You smiled at her before turning to Sweet Pea. “You know my shake order? What I’m craving?”
“I pay attention, also how do you think things keeps magically appearing in the freezer? A food fairy?”
“I thought Fangs was just being Fangs since he’s the one on late night jobs and will usually bring me one.”
“It’s all me baby.” Sweet Pea winked making you blush.
You cleared your throat. “Oh I forgot I have a check for rent.”
Sweet Pea put his hands up. “We are on a date no roommate stuff okay?”
“Okay. Well I’m excited now I get to see what the famous Sweet Pea is like on a date. You have any moves?”
“No if they don’t like me for me..” Sweet Pea started cutting himself off with his own laughter. “C’mon Y/N/N of course I have moves.”
You smirked. “I knew it! C’mon show me your moves.”
“I was going to wait till the end of the night to kiss you but you are so beautiful I don’t think I can.”
You leaned in pressing your hand on his arm. “Wow. I almost leaned in… wow.”
Sweet Pea smirked. “Tell me one of yours.”
“If you excuse me I have to go to the restroom.” You got up, smirking. Still in ear shot. “You are watching me walk away.”
Sweet Pea smirked. “So simple, wow Y/N/N.”
You returned to the table. The conversation and laughs not stopping. You were mid sentence when the bell to Pops rang and you watched with glossed over eyes. Reggie Mantle walked in with a Vixen on his arm. Sweet Pea turned around following your line of sight. He scowled trying to rein in his anger of seeing Mantle. Ever since he walked out on you he wanted to knock him out. Sweet Pea turned back around looking at your trance like form. He placed a hand on your arm gently.
“Hey… let’s get out of here. Yeah?”
You pulled your eyes away from Reggie nodding slowly. Sweet Pea left money on the table motioning towards Veronica slightly without giving anything away to you the reason you were leaving. Veronica nodded with a small wave. Just as you were about to follow Sweet Pea out the front door, a hand wrapped around your arm. You turned coming face to face with the father of your child.
“What do you want Mantle.”
“How are you?”
You pulled your arm out of his grip. Turning, his eyes immediately going to your stomach. “I don’t know Reggie. I’m a teenager who is going to give birth in the next few months, who was kicked out of her parents house because of it, and oh yeah my so called boyfriend who took part in knocking me up bolted as soon as he found out. I’m just peachy.”
“Look I’m sorry. I just wasn’t ready, and if my parents knew… ”
“What so you are the only one that matters in this situation? You think I’m ready? Fuck Reggie how dumb are you? But you know what, don’t worry I have people who care about me and this baby way more than you ever would. Oh and don’t come around in a few years wanting to know us either. As far as I’m concerned this baby doesn’t have a dad.”
Reggie backed up. “I did love you.”
You scoffed. “You sure have a way of showing it.” You turned around. “Let’s go Pea, I suddenly feel sick.”
Sweet Pea nodded, grabbing your hand while glaring daggers into Reggie until he got to the truck. “That was amazing. I’m glad you finally put that mangy bulldog in his place.”
“Yeah… ”
Sweet Pea reached over wiping a stray tear from your cheek. “I know you loved him, I’m sorry he’s such a dick, want to go home? We don’t have to do the rest of the date.”
“There’s more?”
“Well yeah, you listed a lot of things Y/N/N.”
You smiled. “I don’t wanna go home Pea, I want to do the rest of our date.”
Sweet Pea’s hand moved from your face to your thigh. “I’m glad.”
You couldn’t help the smile that spread across your face as Sweet Pea pulled up to the Wyrm. “The Wyrm? You take your fancy girls here?”
“No, just you, c’mon let’s go get a table.”
Tumblr media
You sat at the booth with Toni, Fangs, and Sweet Pea sipping on your sprite as they all drank from a pitcher a beer. It almost felt like old times. You smiled as the beginning of Tennessee Whiskey played over the speakers.
“Let’s dance?”
You looked across the table. “Seriously? I thought Sweet Pea doesn’t dance?”
“Well it’s your lucky night then. C’mon princess let’s go.”
You smiled softly as you allowed Sweet Pea to lead you to the dance floor. He placed his arms around you getting as close as he could, you wrapped your arms around his neck. You softly sang the words as Sweet Pea hummed swaying you both back and forth. When the song ended you smiled. “Thanks for that Pea.”
“You ready to get out of here?”
“Yeah, my feet are super sore and if I smell Fogarty’s cologne any longer I might upchuck.”
Sweet Pea laughed while spinning you towards the front door. “I’ll tell him to lay off of it for awhile. You head to the truck.”
You nodded as you went to the parking lot laughing as Sweet Pea yelled across the Wyrm. “YO FOGARTY LAY OFF THE COLOGNE.”
“You know you could have walked over there.” You sassed as he came into view.
“And miss embarrassing Fogarty? Nah c’mon Y/N/N you know me better than that.”
You rolled your eyes as you climbed into the truck, laying your head against the cold window as Sweet Pea drove you both home.
“Okay out of our friends who would you punch?” Sweet Pea inquired as he unlocked the front door, letting you in.
“I’m not punching any of our friends Pea.”
“No, but if you had to, like really had to.”
“I don’t know okay.”
“Jughead?”
“Yeah, but I don’t know why.”
Sweet Pea let out a booming laugh as he toed his boots off. “He’s annoying that’s why.”
You flipped him off. “Be nice to Juggy.”
“Whatever you are the one who said they’d punch him.”
You stuck your tongue out at him as you pulled the white to go box out from the small bag. “Okay no judgements, I would wait until you had left buuut you live here with me so I’m chowing down on this burger.”
Sweet Pea sat down next to you. “That’s fair. You are eating for two.”
You smiled as your stomach fluttered again your baby moving. You gasped as you felt a kick.
Pea looked at your worried. “Y/N/N! Everything okay?”
You lurched forward grabbing his hand pressing it against your stomach. “She’s kicking!”
Sweet Pea smiled as he felt the movement. “That’s amazing.”
“Okay what are end of the night Sweet Pea moves?” You asked taking a bite of your burger.
“If I want her to kiss me and not make the first move. I make my lips look irresistible.”
“How do you do that?” You asked with your mouth full.
“You can’t tell anyone if I tell you. I might have to kill you if you do.”
You rolled your eyes at his dramatics. “Just tell me.”
“I put on shiny lip balm.”
“Oh my…”
“Like a moth to a flame.” he smirked. “Okay now you tell me.”
“I don’t want to it’s embarrassing.”
“More embarrassing than shiny mango lip balm?”
You snorted as you took a drink of your water.
Sweet Pea placed his hands over his face. “I didn’t say what kind before did I?”
“Nope” You smirked popping the p “and now I have something to hold over you for the rest of our lives.”
“Oh c’mon Y/N/N, just tell me.”
You stood up “Okay fine, you gotta stand up.”
Sweet Pea smiled standing up excited to see what you think your move would be.
“Well when we are at the door I lightly press my lips against his and then move into his body just for a second and then I make this sound. Mmmmm” Sweet Pea stood still entranced. You stepped away. “I know it doesn’t sound like anything but it works. Every time. Like a damn charm.”
“Ye-yeah I’m sure it does.” Sweet Pea stuttered out.
You smiled placing the rest of your pops in the fridge, turning you smiled up at Sweet Pea. “I had such a great time tonight Sweets. Thank you so much.” You stood on your tiptoes gently placing your lips against his cheek. He watched you disappear into your room before bringing his hand up to feel where your lips had pressed moments before.
“Yeah me too.” He stood still for a moment before shaking his head and rushing to his room.
Tumblr media
You sat in the lounge. Laughing with Fangs, as Sweet Pea walked in. He eyed the spot next to you gladly taking it before anyone else could.
“Hey”
“Hi!” you paused. “You know how last night we talked about Kujo.”
Sweet Pea nodded. “I can’t believe you haven’t seen it.”
“Oh relax. Anyway I was going to rent it sometime?”
“Let’s do it tonight?”
A puzzled look crossed your face. “Don’t you have that date tonight?”
“Oh, yeah… yeah.”
“Hey did you feel weird last night?”
“Yeah! You did too I don’t know what it was”
“I think it was a bad batch of pop’s. I was in the bathroom all night.”
“Oh yeah yeah me too.”
“We should have crossed paths.”
“I stayed in my room… don’t look in my hamper.”
You shoved him. “That’s so gross Pea.”
“Well I’m gross. I’m going to head to class. I’ll see you after my date with Emily tonight.”
“TIFFANY” you yelled back at him hoping he would remember her name on his actual date.
You looked to Fangs. “He seem off to you?”
“When doesn’t he seem off?” He replied with a shrug of his shoulders.
You shrugged as you got up heading to class.
-
You sat on the couch popcorn next to you as you wrapped yourself up in a blanket watching the movie on the screen, and  hiding when you didn’t want to look. The door opened causing you to yelp.
“Oh thank god you are home. I’m watching Kujo.”
“Alone?” He questioned.
“Yeah bad idea anyway…  didn’t you have a date?”
“Eh, she wasn’t worth it.”
“Want to watch with me?”
“Uh, sure.” Sweet Pea sat on the edge of the sofa.
“What are you doing over there? You sit here, you protect me.” You informed him as you pulled him down curling into his chest as the loud barking came from the screen. “How can you watch this are you not scared?”
Sweet Pea wrapped his arms around you. “Fucking terrified.” He whispered.

Sweet Pea POV
The next morning I sat on the couch eating a bowl of cereal convincing myself I wasn’t in love with Y/N. She’s just your friend. Nothing more. Just your friend. Y/N walked out of her room in one of my old faded Serpent hoodies. I love you. What? Fuck. I’m so fucked.
“Hey Pea, I’m heading out early. Reg wants to talk to me this morning.”
I clenched my fist. “Want me to come with you?”
“No. I’ll be fine.”
I nodded. Taking a deep breath treading carefully. “Can I talk to you later?”
Y/N looked up at me. “Okay. Find me at school, I’m sure I’ll be punching something after talking to Reggie.”
I nodded putting a spoonful of fruit loops in my mouth.
I pulled up to the school on my bike, my stomach in knots as I headed to the lounge. The closer I got I could hear Y/N laughing. Fangs must be there making her better after that douche ruined her morning. As soon as the thought passed his mind he saw Fangs at his locker. He looked down the hall Cheryl and Toni wrapped in each other. Was it Jughead? The moment I got into the doorway of the lounge my stomach dropped. Y/N was sat on the couch facing away from me while Mantle was facing her, his hands displayed on her stomach as he looked at her in amazement. I watched as she covered her hands on top of his. I stood frozen to the spot, unable to take my eyes off of the scene in front of me. I was close enough to hear the words.
“Look after running into you at Pops with Sweet Pea the way I saw that I broke you I just, I’m so sorry. I want to help with this baby Y/N/N I want to be apart of their life and yours if you’ll let me.”
I scoffed. She wasn’t going to let him back so easily. He walked away. I’ve been the one at appointments and holding her hair back during morning sickness. Where has Mantle been? Screwing as many Vixens as he can.
She sighed. “Listen Reg,” I smirked ready to witness a Mantle beat down. “It’s going to take some time. I don’t trust you. I will always have love for you and I don’t know if we will ever get back to where we were, but you have to step up for any kind of chance.”
I felt like I was going to puke. I watched as Reggie pulled her in for a hug kissing the top of her head, before saying he had to get to class. I turned around until I felt a hand on my back. Turning back around I forced a smile as I looked at Y/N.
“Hey Pea, you wanted to talk to me?”
I scratched the back of my neck. “Uh, I was just going to see if you copied notes in history yesterday.”
She smiled at me and I swear my heart skipped. Why is she doing this to me now? We’ve been best friends for years. “Yeah I always write two cause I know how forgetful you are.”
“I’ll grab them at lunch?”
She nodded turning as I watched her walk away. I couldn’t help the sinking feeling in my chest. There was one thing I knew for sure. I would not let Reggie Mantle hurt her again.

MASTERLIST
❝A bad boy can be very good for a girl❞
- Melissa de la Cruz
I groaned as my mother ripped open the curtains, letting the sunlight fall into my room. She pulled the covers off of my now cold body, “You are going to be late for school if you don’t get out of bed this instant.”
I pulled my pillow over my head, “You couldn’t have turned on the light like a normal parent? I know you love your dramatic flare, but that was a little eccentric.”
“Y/N Y/M/N, get out of bed and into the shower now.” She yanked the pillow off of my head then proceeded to pull me up into a sitting position.
“Aye Aye Captain.” I saluted sarcastically. She just smiled and left my room. I huffed as I got out of my extremely comfortable bed and crossed the hall to the bathroom. After brushing my teeth, and taking a quick shower, I grabbed a pair of light wash jeans and my white, lace-up blouse. I applied a thin layer of mascara to my eyelashes and swiped on some red lipstick. I threw the top half of my Y/H/C hair into a small ponytail, leaving the rest down. I slipped on my red converse, grabbed my backpack, and headed downstairs.
As I set my backpack on the stool next to the one I sat in, my mom slid a bowl of Cheerios in front of me, “Eat.” I shoveled a spoonful of cereal into my mouth, “Big day, mom?” She was dressed her very best and she was fidgeting with everything she could get her hands on.
“Please don’t talk with your mouth full.” She started.
I mumbled a cereal filled, “Sorry.”
She gave me a sideways look, “What did I just say? And to answer your question: Yes, it is a very big day.”
“Do tell.” I smiled, pouring myself another bowl.
“I am showing Hiram Lodge a few properties he may be interested in.” She said proudly.
I choked on my cereal, “Hiram Lodge? Mom, I’ve told you countless times that V thinks he is up to no good. Why would you do business with him?”
“Sweetheart, not everything your new friend Veronica tells you is true.”
I scoffed, “He is her dad. I trust her word over anyone else’s.”
A knock on the door pulled us from the conversation. “That’s probably Betty. Go.” My mom ushered me toward the door, “I’ll take care of the bowl.”
“This conversation is so not over, mom.” I grabbed my backpack and walked out the front door. My mother’s soft, “I’ll be fine” was the last thing I heard.
“Hey, Betts.” I trotted down the front steps.
“What was that about?” Betty motioned back toward my door.
“My mom is doing business with Hiram.”
“What?”
I looked at her, “You heard me. Hiram fucking Lodge. I swear to god, if he screws over my mom in any way, I don’t care if he’s Veronica’s dad; I’ll end him.”
“Well, what business are they doing together?” Betty pushed further.
“She is showing him a few properties to sell him, but she could still get hurt. I mean, even V is skeptical that her father doesn’t have some master plan in the works.” I gripped my backpack strap tighter, “I just don’t want to lose my mom too.”
“You won’t,” Betty reassured me.
“How can you be so sure?” I asked as we walked into school.
“Because your mom is-” Betty’s answer got cut off by Archie.
“Hey, guys.”
“Hi, Archie,” We said in unison. I sighed and headed towards my first class, worry taking over my entire being.
Later that day, Archie was pulled out of class because a Southsider saw him waving a gun around in some Serpent kid’s face. When they checked his locker, they found a black hood, putting Archie in more even trouble.
With all of the Black Hood versus the Red Circle and the Southside versus the Northside drama, I was exhausted; so, I opted out of Vixen practice. I told Cheryl that I had been feeling nauseous all day and luckily for me, she let me go home. It helps that I am one of her only real friends and I actually give a shit about her.
“Hey,”  Cheryl’s voice called from behind me, “Feel better. Call me if you want me to come take care of you, yeah?”
I laughed, “I will, C. Love you.” I ran down the steps of the school and headed home.
As I closed the front door behind me, I realized that my mother wouldn’t be home for another hour or so. I grabbed an apple from the kitchen and trudged up the stairs to my room. I threw myself onto my unmade bed and took a bite out of the apple. I sat up and looked at the clock. 2:28pm. I grabbed the picture next to the clock and tears began to well up in my eyes. It was of mom, dad, and I sitting on the shore of Sweetwater River. We were so happy back then, before the constant fighting, before the divorce. My dad and I haven’t spoken since he and mom split. She was awarded sole custody of me, meaning my dad could not see me unless my mother let him. She didn’t.
I placed the picture frame back on the nightstand and cleared the tears from my cheeks. I grabbed my laptop from the edge of my bed and began to write an essay that wasn’t due for another three weeks, just needing to get my mind off of my dad.
An hour and a half later, the front door opened and closed, signaling that mom was home. I hopped out of bed and ran down the stairs, “So, what happened?”
My mom let out a small scream as she jumped, “Jesus, you scared me. It went well.” She placed her purse on the table in the foyer, “Actually, I have to get changed. I am joining Hiram and Hermione Lodge for dinner over in Greendale, to celebrate finding him a property. I will leave you some money for dinner. I won’t be back until late this evening.”
“You are leaving again?” My shoulders dropped in disappointment, “But it’s movie night. We were supposed to watch the Proposal.”
She kissed my forehead, “I promise I will make it up to you.” She waltzed up the stairs to her room, leaving me alone again.
“Mom?” I knocked on her door, peaking in.
She rounded the corner from her bathroom fastening her one of her earrings, “Yeah, hon?”
“Are you su- uh,” I paused, “I just get worried with everything going on in Riverdale that you leaving me alone in the house is reckless.”
She let out a tiny laugh, “Reckless, huh? Sweetie, call Betty and ask her to come over if you are afraid of being alone.”
“Pfft, I’m not afraid. I just think you going out with the Lodge’s isn’t a good idea.” I was perched on the edge of her bed with my legs crossed. I fidgeted with my fingers, refusing to make eye contact.
“Y/N enough of this ‘The Lodge’s are evil’ nonsense.” She scolded, “They are wonderful people. I am the parent here, not you. You don’t have to worry about me. I can take care of myself. I’m tougher than I look.”
I stood up, “Only because you grew up on the Southside. Don’t think I haven’t seen the tattoo you try to so hard to keep hidden from me.”
“Enough, Y/N Y/M/N. You have no right to bring that up.” She glared at me.
I rolled my eyes. “Yes, I do!” I began, “You say you’re entitled to every single detail of my life and you don’t tell me anything. How is that fair?”
“I am the parent. What I say goes in this household, got it? If I say I don’t want to talk about it, drop the subject.” She fumed. This happened every time I brought up anything she didn’t like. For example, the fact that she has a Serpent tattoo on the inside of her right arm or anytime I even mention my father.
“You know, you always say how different you and Alice are, but you’re exactly the same. You watch your kid’s every move but as soon as they question you, you act like it’s the god damn end of the world. It’s probably why you are best friends.” I argued.
“Watch your language, young lady. Go to your room. I will let you know when I am leaving.” She closed her bedroom door behind me as I stormed off into my room.
About twenty minutes later, there was a small knock on my door. “Come in.”
My mom pushed the door open and sat on my bed, “I am sorry that you feel like I keep things from you. I do, but it is for your own good. One day, when you are older, I’ll explain everything. I will tell you everything, I promise. I don’t want to leave with us on bad terms. I love you always.”
I sighed, knowing when it comes to my mom, it’s better to just drop the subject than to push further, “I love you too, mom. I’m sorry I kept pushing.”
“Here,” She handed me $20, “Order Chinese or pizza or whatever your heart desires. I will be home late.”
“Please be safe,” I whispered.
She pressed a kiss to the top of my head and left the room. I heard the door close as I walked to my window. I watched as her car pulled out of the driveway, then ran downstairs to grab the takeout menus.
The Proposal was blaring through the television speakers, Chinese takeout containers littered the coffee table, and I was curled up on the couch, shoveling orange chicken into my mouth. The roar of motorcycles caused me to jump. Curiosity pulled me towards the window where I saw several of the younger Serpents storm up the front steps of the house across the street. Archie’s house. The biggest one seemed to be threatening Archie as Reggie appeared next to him. What had Andrews gotten himself into now?
Deciding to mind my own business, I returned to my spot on the couch and picked the chicken back up. Ten minutes later, there was an urgent knock on the front door. I paused the movie and went to open the door, “Veronica?”
The raven-haired girl stood in her black cloak, “There is a fight going down, Serpents versus Bulldogs. I need your help or someone is going to die.”
I grabbed my shoes and keys and left with Veronica. She told me she had to go get something, and sent me to where the fight was going down.
I ran through the parked cars towards the boys standing several feet away, the rain drenching everyone in sight. The fight had already started and I watched Archie punch the tall serpent in the eye. I screamed for them to stop, pulling one of the Serpents off of Reggie. I ran for Archie and shoved the Serpent away from him, “Get off of him, you giant oaf.” My bracelet got caught on his jacket, so I shoved him again trying to break free, the clasp broke and it fell to the ground.
“What the fuck did you just call me?” His attention directed entirely on me. I backed up towards Archie as the Serpent towered over me.
“Y/N what are you doing?” Archie yelled, “Get out of here.”
Strong arms wrapped around my torso as I was lifted from behind and dragged away from Archie. “No! Get off of me!” I thrashed in the assailant’s arms, “Let go of me.” He easily held me against his chest as I watched as the Serpent kicked Archie in the stomach. He went to kick Archie again when a gunshot rang through the night. Veronica was standing in between two cars, the gun in her hand. The Serpent holding me loosened his grip and I rammed my elbow into his ribs, causing him to let go of me completely and double over in pain. I ran past Dilton, who was bleeding from a stab wound to his leg from his own knife. Moron.
Running to Archie I helped him up. “Come on,” I rushed, “We have to get out of here!”
I took one last look at the tall Serpent before running off in the other direction.
The Bulldogs and Serpents scattered as Reggie put Dilton in his car, no doubt taking him to the hospital. Archie and Veronica went a different way than I did, leaving me to walk alone in the rain.
I was roughly three blocks from home when I heard a motorcycle pull up next to me, the tall serpent from the fight getting off the bike. I tried to walk away, but his voice made me stop in my tracks, “I thought you might want this back. Looked too pretty for it to be left in the street.”
I turned around to see my bracelet dangling from his fingertips, a teasing smirk on his face, “Oh, c’mon princess. I don’t bite.” He paused and smirked again, “Too hard.”
I reached out to grab the bracelet only to have him pull his arm back towards his body, “You didn’t think it’d be that easy, did you? I really don’t like being called a giant oaf. It’s not nice.”
I scoffed, “Like you’re nice.” I took a step forward, mustering up every ounce of courage in my body, “Just give me my bracelet, you asshole.”
He just laughed, “What’s your name, princess?”
“Stop calling me princess,” I growled.
“You live on the Northside, automatically makes you a princess. Bet you’re a cheerleader.” He smirked yet again, his wet hair falling in his face.
“I am not.” I stepped forward again, trying to seem unbothered by this situation and by him.
“You’re a liar, princess.” He laughed, playing with my bracelet. His broad shoulders moved up and down with his laughter.
“Stop calling me princess,” I said, not hating it nearly as much as I was letting on.
He took a step towards me, our bodies nearly touching, but I stood my ground and stared up at him. He leaned down and whispered in my ear, “Make me.”
A shiver raced through my body as I took a step back, losing my footing. I would’ve fallen over had his hands not latched themselves onto my waist, steadying me. My breath caught in my throat. Gaining my focus back, I pushed his hands off of me, “Do not touch me.”
“Alright, princess.” He walked back to his bike, got onto it, and held up my bracelet, “You’ll get this back when you tell me your name.” He sped off down the street without so much as another glance. Whoever he was, I  knew that wouldn’t be the last time I would see him.

“Haven’t you heard? While they try to fix riverdale, all the northsiders are going here”
“what?!” Sweet pea was enraged.
Jocks looked at him, rolling their eyes.
The bell rang, signalling you had to go to class. You gave sweet pea a quick kiss before running off to your class; English.
~
At least twenty others people, definitely northsiders sat in your class. Mr Phillips stood there, trying to decipher all the new names.
You glared around, and saw the redheaded boy from the night before, next to a blonde girl and a brunette headed boy who was smirking at you. You rolled your eyes, focusing back to the teacher.
“So as most of you know, the riveprdale high kids will be coming to school here until the school is safe to be taught at again. I’m Mr Phillips, and welcome to English”
~
You put your textbook back in your bag as English was dismissed. You got up to exit the class before the brunette from before walked over to you.
“Hey cutie, I'm reggie”
You stared at him, before pushing past him and continuing on your way to the next class.
What you didn't know is that he swore from then he would hook up with you, and stared at your ass as you walked away.
~
It was finally lunch, and you met up with the rest of your serpent crew.
“Hey where’s jughead” You asked, as you slipped next to sweet pea.
“With his Northside friends”He glared over at a group that contained the redheaded boy, the blond, the brunette, a brunette girl and jughead.
The brunette smirked at you, and you looked down at your salad.
Sweet pea saw the boy and glared at him, wrapping a protective arm around you, kissing behind your ear.
You bit into your pizza, already wanting this day to end and be able to hang out with sweet pea.
~
it was the end of the day, and you had just finished your math class. you met sweet pea by his locker, before putting on your jacket and hopping outside.
you hopped onto sweet peas motorcycle, and wrapped your arms around his waist.
you both zoomed off to go to pop’s to get some milkshakes.
the trees passed quickly. Passing sweetwater river. It gave you chills, it seemed like every time someone came here they got hurt or died.
You continued on, before stopping at the diner, neon lights already starting to brighten the faint night sky of fall.
Sweet pea kicked the nightstand down as you took the helmet off, blowing the hair out of your face.
You looked up after fixing your appearance to your best abilities. Sweet pea was looking at you with fond eyes.
“What?” You laughed nervously.
“Nothing” He sighed, “You’re just so...angelic”
You snorted, making sweet pea smile more.
“Come on mushy peas let’s go get some food”
you looped your arm around him, walking up the steps and walking into the diner, a bell ringing to signal there were more customers.
Lot’s of northsiders littered around in the booth. You saw an empty one near the middle, quickly snagging it.
Both of you didn’t even have to look at the menus.
A brunette headed girl with pearls walked over. You recognized her from seeing her at lunch today, and smiled.
“What can I get for ya?”
“We’ll take a chocolate milkshake, and....”
You looked at sweet pea, “Curly fries” He answered.
“No problem”, the girl walked away, taking the menu with her.
“I’m just gonna head to the bathroom, be right back”
“Mkay”
Sweet pea walked off, disapearing in a hallway.
You looked out the window. You were always curious about the Northside. Your mother was from the Northside, but since she met your father in the outside she never acknowledged it.
You looked at the evergreens. They looked brighter on the side. The sky looked bluer. The grass greener. But as pretty as the scenery was, it was the people that were corrupt. Sure, the Southside looked sketchy, but the people were genuine.
A boy slid into the booth across from you, but it wasn’t your boyfriend. It was the boy from earlier.
“Hey” He winked at you. “What’s up cutie”
You rolled your eyes. “Go away northsider”
“Ooh” He smirked, “fiesty, I like it”
You continued to look out the window, trying to get rid of this boys you saw a flash of blonde in the diner.
“So..Babe, I've having a party this weekend. You stood come, have a little fun”
“Mmm” You sighed, figuring the only way to get rid of him was to give him what he wanted, “I’ll see if I can fit it in”
He clicked his tongue, “See you there cutie”
He disappeared out the door, the blonde flash not following that long after.
Sweet pea returned, and smiled at you. “Sorry for taking so long some idiot northsider was in the way”
He slid into the booth, just as the waitress came by with your smoothie and fries.
“So..” Sweet pea grinned, “Who gets the sweet potato fry?”
~
Lying down, exhausted, sweet pea was taking a shower. The samllhum helped lull you to sleep.
Ring! Ring!
You groaned, looking over at your phone.
Unknown.
“Hell when are you going to stop calling?” You whispered, before picking up the phone.
“What do you want penny?”
“You have a contact name for me? How sweet.”
You sighed, “I joined the serpents, set fire to riverdale high. What the hell do you need now. I did everything just leave me alone”
Penny inhaled a sharp breath. “relax. This is the last thing. And it’s very simple...”

Hidden Gems in San Diego that are Staying Safe
Tumblr media
I have grown up in San Diego since I was 4 years old, and I've barely even scratched the surface of the amazing food culture this city has. Here are some spots I have found since becoming a foodie and broadening my horizons. While the COVID-19 pandemic has definitely been a challenge for us all, it has been especially tough on the restaurant industry; feel free to show your support by going to some of these amazing places.
Lourdes Mexican Food
Cardiff by the Sea
 No website
They have the best caldo de pollo (chicken soup) in San Diego. It brightens up your day and is the best thing when feeling glum. It comes with either flour or corn tortillas and will rock your world. I also happen to think they have some bomb carnitas and recommend trying that as well. Pictured below is the wonderful soup in question and a carnitas taco. (pre-covid)
Tumblr media
Tribute Pizza
North Park
 https://www.tributepizza.com/
Is an innovative pizzeria based out of an old post office building. They have weekly special pizza labeled “The Tribute” which ranges from all sorts of fresh ideas such as “our tribute to the Alsatian flambeed classic pizza, with cognac infused organic creme fraiche, caramelized onions and shallots, shaved cremini mushrooms, lamb chopper sheep's milk gouda, parsley and parmigiano reggiano, and the option for crispy bacon” which was fantastic. They also have amazing brussels sprouts, focaccia, charcuterie boards, and seasonal desserts. Instagram is the best place to check in on what exciting offers they have at any given time. Pictured below is one of their amazing cheese boards. (pre-covid)
Tumblr media
Pop Pie/Stella jeans
University Heights
https://www.poppieco.com/
Pop Pie is a fantastic pie shop/ ice cream sister combo restaurant adventure. On one side you have amazing savory, sweet pies, and coffee. These individual sized savory pies come in flavors such as green hog & cheese, classic chicken, and roasted veggies & yellow curry. On the other, you have gourmet flavors of ice cream such as matcha pistachio, ube + pandesal, and brown butter pecan. Stella Jean's has an ever-changing menu for these fantastic flavors and I highly recommend following both businesses on Instagram. Pictured below is a Stella Jean Pint of specialty ice cream.
Tumblr media
Northside shack
North Park & Point Loma
While the website is unfortunately rather outdated in terms of information and aesthetic, Northside Shack is a fantastic customizable acai bowl establishment that also offers a wide variety of smoothies. It is a great place to get a boost of energy for the day through some super fresh fruit. Pictured below is an acai/pitaya bowl I couldn't have devoured faster if I tried.
Tumblr media
Shank & Bone
North Park
https://www.shankandbone.com/
Shank & Bone has amazing Vietnamese food including bun bowls, pho, and some fun fusion items. You can’t go wrong with anything, but I would recommend the grilled shrimp bun bowl because their grilled shrimp is off-the-charts delicious. I also think they have some of the best pho broth I have ever had, and that's definitely saying something given the breadth of my foodie journey. Pictured below is their amazing Saigon chicken wings.
Tumblr media
This is just the tip of the iceberg of hidden gems scattered through-out San Diego. It has been a huge help to have some places to look forward to frequenting during COVID-19, and I take great comfort in knowing that I can rely on their sanitation and safety. Comment below if you have any new and exciting recommendations; I'm always thrilled to dive deeper into this city's culinary scene. Above all else, stay safe out there!

Food On & Off Campus
Cyrose Conteh
Michael Smith
Amin Gould
Perry Carpenter
Theme: Food On/Off Campus
Prologue: Brooke-Lynn, a student at Kutztown University, finds it tempting to walk down Main Street especially while trying to avoid “freshman 15.” The smells on Main Street are indescribable, Brooke-Lynn explains the two most common Main Street scents, food and cow manure. Both smells intertwine, but on a good day the cheesy savory smell of Tommy Boys Pizza will take over the rotten egg smell of cow manure. With all the other places to eat down Main Street. Tommy Boys will forever be Brooke-Lynn’s favorite place to eat off campus because they offer good prices for large thin and crispy pizzas. Brooke-Lynn encourages everyone to go to Tommy Boys and try their pizza for the first time because their pizzas aren’t too greasy and most definitely not soggy. If you’re looking for something other than pizza, Tommy Boys is still the place to go, explained Brooke-Lynn. They have amazing cheesy mac n’ cheese bites along with freshly tossed salad and many many more stated Brooke-Lynn. Even though eating off campus can be enjoyable, it can also be pricey, uttered Brooke-Lynn. When she’s not eating off campus her favorite place to eat on campus is Chick-fil-a. Brooke-Lynn explained how waiting in a long line at Chick-fil-a before class can be detrimental if she plans on getting to class on time. South Dining Hall is another place on campus that Brooke-Lynn goes to eat. She talks about the salad and bagel bar being her favorite. On days where she wants to save money, South Dining Hall is the place she’ll go for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Brooke-Lynn is not alone in trying to navigate the world of food at Kutztown on and off campus. Food is necessary for all students. There is not a single person who doesn’t think about it on a daily basis. In this blog post, we will cover food at Kutztown in four acts: Act I South Dining Hall on campus; Act II North Campus on campus; Act III Tommy Boys off campus; and Act IV Pop’s Malt Shoppe off campus. Introducing Act I: South Dining Hall will be Michael.
Act I: South Dining Hall on campus
I came to KU not knowing to expect I listened to many of my friends telling me about their experiences with their first year of college. My friends told me that it was not what they expected it to be. Most of the them were telling me how they didn’t like the food the cafeteria because there was little variety. My experience with the South Dining Hall has been on and off because sometimes there are good meals and at other times the food is not tasty. I mainly eat at the South Dining Hall at night because we practice until 8:30pm each evening. Many of the stores in the Marketplace are often closing as I just get to the facility after practice most food stores will be just closing. I like to go and eat after practice and often the food is well done, of good quality, and taste great. There are some evenings when I go to South Dining Hall that the quality that the food is not completely cooked and it does not taste very good. I can tell when it’s a good night and bad night because of how the food looks like as it is being served. I know when it’s a good night at south when there are a lot of people in there having fun and enjoying their food. I wanted to obtain an opinion of the South Dining Hall food so I interviewed my roommate Dominick Wilson. Dominick says the food at the South Dining Hall isn't really as good as it was talked up to be. In the beginning the food was okay because it was new to him.
Act II: North Campus on campus
If you’re on the Northside of campus before 8pm you can pick up something at the multitude of places to eat. If you are ballin on a budget, Cub Cafe might be the one for you. This Kutztown dining hall has a large variety of food to choose from, like speciality made sandwiches or freshly made hibachi. However, maybe you’re not feeling like Kutztown served food; maybe you want something with a little more flavor. Let us take a walk over to the Academic Forum to get in the outrageously long Chick Fil A line. Chick Fil A is the Academic Forum’s main attraction with students sometimes flooding out the door to get their hands on some delicious waffle fries. The small line rivaling Chick Fil A’s is that of the unauthentic mexcian cuisine in the AF. However, maybe not of this appeals to you and you are more of a coffee and breakfast person like my friend Emma. One thing Emma likes to get every day when she’s on North Campus is Starbucks. She claims that her favorite time of the day is when she is able to sit in the luxurious Starbucks section of the MSU with her coffee. Emma says before coming to college she was unpleasant that she would have to start making her own coffee, this was before she knew there was a Starbucks right on campus. Know she says that she wouldn’t want to go to any other college in the world. Maybe you can’t pay out of pocket for these wonderful food choices, that is not a problem with having a flex plan. The flex plan at KU is a set amount of currency on every student KU card that allows them to purchase things like Chick Fil A or Starbucks among other things. Whether you want an all you can eat food experience or a higher quality food experience, there’s always something to enjoy on North Campus.
Act III: Tommy Boys off campus
Since coming to kutztown all I have heard is how good tommy boys is and how I need to try it. After trying their pizza i can say it supported it's hype. From the big slices to the overall taste it was worth going. Shane a sophomore here at kutztown when asked how he would describe tommy boy’s described it as “heaven on earth.” Shane says he goes to  tommy boys about once every two weeks and does not get sick of tommy boys food.
Act IV: Pop’s Malt Shoppe off campus
Since I came to Kutztown in August, I have gone to Pop’s Malt Shoppe at least eight times. Pop’s Malt Shoppe is an amazing family friendly restaurant located on Main Street in Kutztown. With all the amazing food Pop’s has to offer, their ice cream flavors are to die for. Pop’s have over 30 ice cream flavors. My all time favorite flavor at Pop’s  is black raspberry. Their ice cream is so creamy, refreshing, yummy, sweet and rich. Their vintage 50’s style provides a family friendly atmosphere that appeals to all ages. The workers are also very welcoming to students and families. Ali, a fellow freshman, also loves Pop’s. Her favorite thing about Pop’s is the cute 50’s style theme. The checkered walls, red stools, records on the walls, and the music played mixed with the delicious foods to offer will have you addicted to Pop’s Malt Shoppe. She would recommend the mac n’ cheese burger and the mac n’ cheese bites to anyone who’s never eaten at Pop’s. At Pop’s there are so many food options to choose from off the menu. Pop’s have amazing fries, especially their chili cheese fries explained Ali. She talked about how their nacho cheese fries are amazing but when it’s topped with chili, they’re to die for. Pop’s Malt Shoppe is Ali’s favorite place to eat off campus. When she has the time and money, Ali enjoys having their creamy mint chocolate chip ice cream with whip cream and a cherry on top. Although Ali enjoys eating at different places on Main Street, Pop’s Malt Shoppe is still her number one favorite place to eat.

Northside Wines
Finding somewhere to dine with over 35 wines on offer by the glass is a feat within itself, but that's exactly what Northside Wines on High Street in Northcote offers Melburnians. Using the wine preservation technology of Coravin and Enomatic ensures that the final pour of a bottle is as fresh as the first, alongside native Australian ingredients used in a primarily Italian focused menu. Dine on tables made from repurposed shelving inside a large, open-plan space surrounded by black walls and vibrant murals of native flora while sharing small plates such as charred cauliflower with Geraldton wax and a citrus tahini sauce or larger plates like the vegemite and cheese ravioli – pulled lamb in a Vegemite reduction with three-cheese bechamel and olive dust. FASHION’s Guide to a Chic Getaway in Grand Cayman
Craving an amazing tropical getaway offering something for every type of traveller—hotel lovers, adventure junkies, foodies and wellness seekers? Grand Cayman is a prime spot that’s easy to get to and super fun to explore. Located between Cuba and Jamaica, Grand Cayman is part of the Cayman Islands three-island group (Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are the other two) and is the largest and most energetic of the trifecta. Here’s our essential guide detailing where to stay, play, eat and explore on the island.
Photography via Instagram/@seafireresort
STAY
Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa is Grand Cayman’s newest resort on beauteous Seven Mile Beach is the island’s coolest and a new exclusive fave of celebs (Armie Hammer is a regular) and seasoned Caribbean travellers. This boutique hotel has a modern design style that’s bright and urban chic. All of the hotels 266 guest rooms are light-filled thanks to huge glass windows looking out to the spectacular pool and beach area. Pops of fuchsia, orange, yellow, lime green prevail throughout and an ocean view suite is definitely the top pick room pick if you can swing it (hello soaker tub with a sea outlook!). You can indulge in amazing food at the Seafire with three amazing in-house restos (Coccoloba a breezy oceanfront taqueria is our fave) as well as amazing self-care at The Spa at Seafire which is home to the most incredible Hammam room and Caymanian-inspired treatments like the Ocean Calm massage and Cayman Coconut body scrub.

PLAY
The Cayman Islands are home to some of the world’s best diving sites. The marine life is vast and varied and the underwater world of Grand Cayman is just as breathtaking as land life. If you love exotic adventure that takes you off the beaten path, Cayman’s Crystal Caves are a must. Situated in a forested area in Northside, Grand Cayman, the caves have been recently excavated and can now be explored via a 90-minute guided walking tour. Millions of years old, the caves feature incredible crystal formations. A great way to end a day in Grand Cayman is with a sail on a 65’ luxury catamaran to one of the island’s most famous attractions Stingray Sandbar. Head out late afternoon and arrive in time to take a snorkel with the friend rays then sail back to Seven Mile beach against a stunning pink sunset.

EAT
Grand Cayman is famed as the culinary capital of the Caribbean. A decade ago, chef Eric Ripert’s now-annual Cayman Cookout event put the island on the international dining map. In Grand Cayman you can enjoy a different type of cuisine at every meal—giving your vacay a distinctly global flavour. A few must eat spots include Luca at the Caribbean Club which offers classic Italian; Andiamo at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayaman which also serves Italian flavours with a Caribbean twist and has the best pizza and homemade gelato on the island; and Agua at Cayman Bay offering a largely seafood-focused menu with a Peruvian culinary flair. Also if you love sushi, dinner at Taikun is a Grand Cayman essential….fresh wasabi grated tableside anyone?

REJUVENATE
There is a wellness vibe happening on Grand Cayman and if you are looking to get your groove back, this is the island to do it on. Make the Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa your home base as it has a huge health and wellness focus that pervades all aspects of the resort from dining to spa and resort activities which includes everything from beach yoga to paddle boarding. Book a Deluxe Ocean Front Room on the ground level and you can walk straight out to the beach. The resort is also home to the largest freshwater pool in Grand Cayman so if you are looking to just lounge under a breezy palm tree and realign your Zen zone this is the perfect spot.

Brewing My Religion: 13 American Breweries in Former Churches
“There’s nothing in the Bible that says you can’t drink alcohol in a responsible manner,” Chris VanHall, Greater Purpose Community Church pastor, as well as its future brewer, said in August 2018. The Santa Cruz, Calif., house of worship plans to open a brewery in summer 2019.
Historically, churches were often among a city or town’s soundest structures. Now, out-of-service houses of worship are proving to be ideal spaces for new brewing businesses. At least 10 former churches were converted to breweries between 2011 and 2017, with several more in planning, AP reported.
Today, more than a dozen breweries housed in former churches dot the U.S., breathing new life into once-defunct spaces. Here are 13 breweries in former churches.
3rd Turn Brewing
Louisville, Ky.
Credit: 3rd Turn Brewing / facebook.com
Housed in an 1878 restored church, 3rd Turn Brewing rotates its beers weekly. At press time, its draft list features a thorough selection of traditional European styles, including German-style gose,  Berliner weisse, and hefeweizen, along with American red, brown, and pale ales.
Back Pew Brewing
Porter, Texas
Located in the appropriately named town of Porter, about 30 miles north of Houston, Back Pew embraces its dark side, seeking “inspiration from sources strange and fantastic … with creative characters and daring twists,” the company statement says. The self-described “misfits” brew light-bodied beers (“Saints”) along with those that are “dark, bold, and brazen” (“Sinners”). These include Black Habit Schwarzbier, Sweet Salvation Brown Ale, and 9th Circle Black IPA.
Beer Church Brewing
New Buffalo, Mich.
Credit: Beer Church Brew / facebook.com
Opened in the former Water’s Edge United Methodist Church in 2017, Beer Church embraces its environs. Taps are built into a wood altar where patrons and former parishioners recall being baptized. Rev. Brad Bartelmay, the church’s former pastor, “is one of our biggest supporters,” Beer Church co-founder Jane Simon told the Chicago Tribune in 2017. In addition to beers like Pontius Pilate IPA and Crooked Cross Cream Ale, Beer Church offers Neapolitan-style pizzas and other pub fare. In 2018, it unveiled the Beer Church Garden, which you can preview in this neat drone video.
Breaker Brewing Co.
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
In 2013, Breaker Brewing opened its doors in the former St. Joseph’s Monastery & School. The brewery has since had several upgrades, including obtaining its brewpub license in 2014, adding a dining area and bar in 2016, and building a new 15-barrel brewing system in 2017. There’s also an outdoor dog-friendly patio.
Brewery Vivant
Grand Rapids, Mich.
Credit: Brewery Vivant / breweryvivant.com
At Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids, Mich., brewpub visitors can order a pint at what was once the altar of this former funeral chapel. Opened in 2010, the brewpub is inspired by the small breweries of southern Belgium and northern France, celebrating the “bon vivant” with European-style “Michigan farmhouse ales” and a scratch kitchen serving rich countryside dishes like duck confit and chef-selected charcuterie. Brewery Vivant is also the world’s first LEED-certified microbrewery.
Castle Church Brewing
Orlando, Fla.
Credit: Castle Church Brewing / castlechurchbrewing.com
Castle Church Brewing takes the cake in churches-turned-breweries because it actually operates as both. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America welcomes all with a 20-barrel brewhouse with food and games Monday through Sunday, and offers Sunday worship.
The Church Brew Works
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Credit: Church Brew Works / churchbrew.com
Ask a beer lover about Pittsburgh, and chances are they’ve been to the Church Brew Works, where pillars surround a brewhouse altar, and diners and drinkers praise rich dishes like spinach, feta, and smoked Gouda dip; Kobe beef and mushroom cheesesteaks; and bison bolognese. Brews include Great American Beer Festival award winners like Celestial Gold and Pious Monk Dunkel.
Father John’s Microbrewery
Bryan, Ohio
Owner John Trippy is not a priest, he’s a former oral surgeon, but he did restore this former Methodist church in Bryan, Ohio in 2013. It is now a brewery, restaurant, and event venue, and its outdoor beer garden is described by CraftBeer.com writer Heather Galanty as “peaceful.” Trippy gets points for being totally goth, too: In the “crypt room,” diners can peer down at a coffin encased under glass in the floor below, a relic uncovered during renovations.
McMenamins Wilsonville Old Church & Pub
Wilsonville, Ore.
Credit: McMenamins Old Church And Pub / facebook.com
With dozens of hotel, pub, and restaurant locations throughout Oregon and Washington, McMenamins runs a variety of cool businesses in restored spaces. Its Old Church & Pub brewery in Wilsonville occupies a renovated 1911 church. Wood floors, high ceilings, stained glass, and “unusual artwork” grace the inside space, while an outdoor amphitheater provides live music and events.
Salt Springs Brewery
Saline, Mich.
Credit: Salt Springs Brewery / saltspringsbrewery.com
Many Saline residents and visitors are drawn by the region’s salt springs, but the chemistry-loving Salt Springs Brewery, built in a nearly 190-year-old former church, offers a different kind of liquid. Beer, cider, and wine are all on the menu, alongside a food menu featuring local ingredients. Traditional “true-to-style” ales and lagers (Kölsch, hefeweizen) are made with locally malted grains and Michigan hops.
St. Joseph Brewery & Public House
Indianapolis, Ind.
Credit: St. Joseph Brewery / saintjoseph.beer
Built in 1879, St. Joseph Church has undergone several iterations. It functioned as a house of worship until 1949 when, due to competition from other congregations, it held its last mass. Then, it served as a Catholic community center and meeting hall until 1954. It became a brewery in 2015. Today the brewery and restaurant offer beers with names like Confessional IPA, Dark Angel Black Lager, and Testament Tripel. It also serves wine by the glass and bottle, and classic cocktails from a full bar.
Taft’s Ale House
Cincinnati, Ohio
Credit: Taft’s Beer Co. / facebook.com
Although named, and themed, after the burly, bathtub-loving 27th U.S. President, Taft’s Ale House is housed in what was once the oldest Protestant parish in Cincinnati, St. Paul’s Evangelical Church. Built in 1850, the stunning 49,000-square-foot space was also once home to the Cincinnati Car Company Factory. BeerAdvocate named Taft’s one of the best new breweries in 2015.
Urban Artifact
Cincinnati, Ohio
Credit: Urban Artifact Brewing / facebook.com
Another Cincinnati church-turned-brewery established in 2015, Urban Artifact occupies the lower level of the historic St. Patrick’s church in Cincinnati’s Northside. The brewery, bar, and music venue has capacity for several hundred drinkers, including a courtyard where patrons can sip tart fruit beers outside. The Gadget, a “Midwest fruit tart ale” made with blackberries, raspberries, and vanilla beans, and Keypunch, a gose with Key lime zest and juice, are among the current favorites.

Where to Drink and Dine in Chicago During The NRA Show
If you’re attending the 2017 National Restaurant Show taking place at McCormick Place in Chicago this weekend, then you’d be smart to take an extra day or two for yourself to explore and enjoy the city away from overload of the restaurant industry’s largest trade show. If you didn’t, well, you messed up!  Take a local’s advice and follow these tips! You’ll be guaranteed to have a good time .
Hot New Places to Grab a Drink
You should feel good about yourself, because you could not ask for a better time to visit Chicago. These are some of the newest spots that have Chicagoans buzzing after a long winter. Warning: this list will not help you get your beach body back.
For a comprehensive list of recent bars and cool watering holes to visit, check out Chicago Eater’s Chicago Cocktail Heat Map. You’ll get more than cocktail bars on the list. Here’s a few of our favorite places that are both on and off the list.
The Lunatic, The Lover, & The Poet
The Bar at The Lunatic, The Lover, and The Poet
Recently Opened in late March, this wine bar has been a long time coming. It’s located on Randolph Street in the West Loop, at the start of a stretch dubbed “Restaurant Row,” that is full of trendy dining and drinking spots. With a wine list cultivated by “acclaimed longtime sommelier Tom Powers,” The Lunatic “offers an outstanding wine list and cocktail menu with an approachable food menu.”
Slightly Toasted
Steak and Egg Toast at Slightly Toasted
Another new entry that sits on the outskirts of the Loop. Slightly Toasted is the perfect spot to snag a great breakfast or choose a dram from a tremendous whiskey list. It’s a great place to start or end your day. Located by Ogilvie transportation center, and a few minutes walk from Union Station, this place is a must-visit if you’re coming into the city by train. If you’re in town on Monday for the show, swing by afterward for their Monday night whiskey special and enjoy 50 percent off (most) whiskey pours.
Chicago Athletic Association Hotel
Originally built in the 1890s, this rehabbed hotel is a stunning adult playground. It’s design is gorgeous and honors its Gothic artcitechture and deep history. From top to bottom, CAA is a must visit in the heart of the Loop. At Cindy’s roof top bar you can enjoy views of Millennium Park and downtown Chicago, or, grab dinner at the 1950s inspired Cherry Circle Room. Once dinner is done, stop by the Game Room for a drink and a game of pool or bocce ball.
Classic Chicago Bars
The Matchbox – This bar takes it’s name from the tiny, hallway-like size of the bar. Bartenders here mix classic cocktails with a heavy hand. If you’re feeling down, swap out the extra-strength Tylenol for an extra strength gin Martini. Neighborhood: River West
Delilah’s – An iconic whiskey bar known for its punk rock posturing. Catch DJs every weeknight spinning artists that your shazaam probably won’t recognize. Stop in for Punk Rock Monday pair a $1 beer with a pour of 50 year old Scotch. Neighborhood: Lincoln Park
Map Room – Like a beer geek’s basement, with European beers and pretzel sticks standing in for plastic wrapped Star Wars figurines. This bar is cash only, so come with some bills, and a list of the beers you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t come across. They probably have it. Neighborhood: Bucktown
Green Door: The building was built in the 1870s, right after the Great Chicago Fire. Filled with Chicago history and a great beer list, the Green Door is a must-stop for a classic Chicago Irish Bar feel. Also, look for the bar’s hidden speakeasy in the basement, The Drifter. Neighborhood: River North
Green Mill: An institution on the North Side. A famous jazz bar known for classic cocktails and a thing for Chicago history – from its decor to the bartender’s uniforms being straight out of The Shining. It’s also known for secret rooms and tunnels that were used by Al Capone during the height of Chicago’s gang run prohibition era. Neighborhood: Uptown
Billy Goat Tavern: Home to Chicago’s biggest super fans and “cheeseborgers, cheeseborgers” from the famous SNL skit. There are a few locations across the city, including one right down the street from the United Center where the Bulls and Blackhawks play, and in the Loop on Lake St. If you want the original, visit the subterranean location at 430 N. Michigan Ave, lower level. Neighborhood: Loop (2), Navy Pier, Near West Side
Near McCormick Place
If you’d like to explore the area near the convention center, there are plenty of places to try on Chicago’s under-appreciated and grossly misrepresented Southside.
Maria’s Packaged Goods and Community Bar: A now iconic spot in Bridgeport. When you walk into Maria’s, you’ll find yourself in the middle of a beer shop, or package store. But don’t stop there! In the back there are two bars and a great beer garden outside. You can also grab food at Kimski, a counter-service expansion serving Korean Polish Street Food. If you’re looking for a connection between the two cuisines, just remember one word: cabbage. Neighborhood: Bridgeport
Reggie’s Chicago: A live music venue and record shop with a third identity as one of Chicago’s coolest and most laid back roof top bars. You don’t need to swing by for a show, but do stop in for a bucket of Miller Lite and daily food specials. Neighborhood: South Loop
Baderbräu Brewery and Brewpub: A (relatively) new Chicago brewery specializing in lagers and wheat beers, with a Deutsche influence. They serve food at their brewpub and offer daily specials. They are closed on Mondays. Neighborhood: Near Southside
Chinatown: McCormick Place is just east of Chicago’s famous Chinatown neighborhood. There is plenty to check out behind the Chinatown Gate, check out Time Out’s Chinatown guide for more information. If you’re looking for a quick bite, try the pulled pork buns at Chiu Quoun Bakery. Neighborhood: Chinatown (Duh!)
Places For Dinner
You can check out the Eater 38 for some great dining ideas in Chicago. But a lot of these places may be hard to get a seat at on short notice. Especially on Saturday night. Pro Tip: If you want to grab a meal at wildly popular spot and can’t get a reservation, then sit at the bar! Most restaurants will have full food service at the bar, and you can usually walk in and grab a couple seats at the bar, or at least significantly lessen your wait time. Also, bartenders are the best people to become friends with in a restaurant.
Best Pizza Spots
Lou Malnati’s, Geno’s East, and Giordano’s are the triumvirate of famous Chicago deep dish pizza places. You could also stop by Pizzeria Uno. You can argue with your friends about which place is the best, everyone has an opinion. Multiple Locations
Pequod’s Pizza: This is a local favorite, it’s not quite Chicago deep dish, more 0f a pan pizza. But no matter what, you won’t be able to eat your entire pie. Neighborhood: Lincoln Park
Piece Pizza: A great New Haven-style pizza place with a bit of a hippie complex. They also brew their own beer. Neighborhood: Wicker Park
Phil’s Pizza: Deep Dish get’s all the headlines when it comes to Chicago and pizza. Which is too bad, because, I mean is deep dish really even pizza? Or is it a pizza like casserole? Chicago’s Southside doesn’t do deep dish quite like its northside counterrparts, instead, they opt for the more delicious and enjoyable thin crust variety. Check out Phil’s in Bridgeport for the hero in the shadows of Chicago pizza.
Uncorkd provides digital menus and beverage program management tools for restaurants. Stop by our booth, #7752, in the North Hall at this year’s NRA show.
