The Piedmont, Southern Railway

In addition to the famous Crescent, there was another passenger train on the Southern Railway after May 1st 1971: the Piedmont. It’s northbound in this case, seen here crossing over the Yadkin River, near Spencer, North Carolina. That’s the North Carolina Finishing Plant in the background.

Another piece of lost Old Salem history. This empty lot, which is now a garden, at the intersection of East Bank Street and South Church Street was the location of the house of Frederick Belo's daughter (circled area on the map). Which daughter, I do not know. Frederick Belo is known for building the Fredrick Belo house back in 1849 and 1860, which is located at 455 South Main Street. His daughter's house, third photo, was built circa 1895. Unfortunately, his daughter's house was demolished back in the late 1990s. Historic circa 1892 house at 712 Brookstown Ave. It was the location of Miami Cafe, which closed a few years ago. Looking northeast at One Salem Tower with Kaleideum Downtown next to it on the right and Brookstown Ave running in front of them. This was the location of the Salem Industrial District. The second photo, which was edited by local historian Fam Brownlee, is what part of this industrial district looked like back in 1890. To my knowledge, every single structure in this photo doesn't exist anymore. The F&H Fries Gasworks was roughly located where One Salem Tower currently sits. The third photo is a current Google map of the area and the fourth photo is the Google map overlayed with a map of the area from 1912. Ten dollar bill from the Graham, NC branch of the Bank of Lexington. The bank was chartered on 16 February 1859 and operated until 1866. The Fogle Flats at the intersection of Cemetery Street and South Main Street in Winston-Salem. They were built back in the 1890s by the Fogle Brothers and are the earliest examples of row houses in Winston-Salem. The Elias Vogler Store along South Main Street in Old Salem. It was built back in 1867 and originally had an Italianate facade (second photo). In 1938 it was replaced with a Colonial Revival facade (third photo).
