It preserves one of the largest remaining coastal wetland habitats in southern California, with habitats that support eight threatened and endangered species of plants and birds. It also contains a visitor’s center with activities, programs, and exhibits, and Border Field State Park, which offers picnic and barbecue areas, horse corrals, educational panels, and outdoor activities. There are 22 miles of hiking trails in the reserve, including numerous horseback riding trails in the state park that run along the Pacific Ocean. Hoover Dan was a challenge because it had been photographed so much, so I struck on the idea of photographing it at night, all lit up, the jewel in the Corp of Engineers control of the river. I think I may have been the first to photograph Hoover Dam at night from the air. I remember that I lucked out and got a very, very good helicopter pilot who hovered stock still while I shot several rolls of film. This was way before digital and my magic film recipe was Kodachrome 200 pushed a stop (making it ISO400) and my much-cherished Olympus OM-2 with the then-miraculous 21mm f2 lens they had. For the time it was state of the art equipment and I think I got about five or ten sharp frames. It was an expensive shot but critical to the story because of the massive changes the dams on the Colorado River have brought to the American West, both for good and bad. Our story explored the river from the headwaters to where it sank into the sands of Mexico, never making it to the Sea of Cortez. In most ways those issues remain unresolved today, made even worse by the devastating drought of recent years. This story for National Geographic was also a sentimental favorite because it was my first story working with then-new picture editor Dennis Dimick, the first of many we have collaborated on.
