Saturday Movie Night: Confessions of a Trainspotter
youtube
Michael Palin has to travel to the Kyle of Lochalsh on business, and has decided to go all the way by rail. What with having been such an avid train spotter in his youth, though, Michael simply can't stop himself from making a few diversions along the way.
First stopping off at Rainhill to observe the Rocket 150 celebrations, Michael then hitches a ride on the Flying Scotsman on a special excursion to York - where, of course, he looks around the National Railway Museum. After a ride on the North York Moors Railway, he is whisked away on the latest Intercity 125 to Edinburgh, just in time for festival season. Then it's up through the heart of the Highlands to Inverness, and along wildly romantic coastlines to the Kyle of Lochalsh. All the while, Michael talks with some of the people helping to keep the railway age alive.
And all this, just to keep a business appointment! But as Michael says, there are some treasures you just can't find anywhere else...

Bridge at Goathland Station, better known to some as Hogsmeade Station in the Harry Potter movies needs repairs / replacement. The famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) that runs it, and has had other parts of their heritage line appear in other Hollywood movies including Mission Impossible and Indiana Jones is appealing for donations to get the job done.

...of Anoraks, Pufferküsser and Tragics!
A short foreword and explanation: My friend Michael in London has been doing a blog since blogs became a thing. He started out to review, comment on and complain about all things Apple. Hence the blog’s URL: www.macfilos.com. However over the years his obsession with photography and cameras, in particular Leica equipment, became the main focus of his blog. The blog name stayed the same, but it is…

I did a Christmas
I wrote a Christmas story. It is of considerable length. @mean-scarlet-deceiver helped considerably in its creation.
No, you don't get it all at once. Also, I'm not tagging it any differently because a lot happens in this! If you want to find out, you gotta read it. (And put tags in your reblogs so I can see what you think of it. Please.)
June, 1985
The mail came over the span of a month. It came as postcards, letters, overstuffed mailers, and packages that weighed “a bloody ton!”
They came from as near as Cumbria and as far away as Western Australia.
The paper ranged from lined yellow notebook paper to cream-colored heavy cardstock, and everything in between.
Letterhead was common: SCIENCE MUSEUM, LONDON. Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, Hemel Hempstead. Hamersley Iron, Port Dampier, Western Australia. NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM, YORK. Government of Ontario Transit, Union Station, Toronto. North Yorkshire Moors Railway, 12 Park Street, Pickering, North Yorkshire, YO18 7AJ.
Bluebell Railway, Sheffield Park Station, East Sussex
Vale of Rheidol Railway, Park Avenue, Aberystwyth
Great Central Railway, Loughborough
H.P. Bulmers Railway Centre, Hereford
-
They were typed and hand-written in equal measure. Some were obviously transcribed verbatim. Others had notes from the oftentimes unwilling stenographer peppered throughout. One contained a second sheet of paper, informing the recipient that the author had been so enraged that he’d insisted on writing the letter himself.
The letters started off normally,
“Dear Oliver…”
“Duck,”
“7101”
“Montague,”
“Ollie…”
“Brother,”
-
“I hope that this letter finds you well.”
“I’m pleased to hear you’re alright.”
“Let me start by saying that I’d be there myself if I were able.”
“THANK GOD THAT YOU ARE OKAY.”
“This will be a short letter. A longer one may follow.”
-
But very quickly grew… boisterous.
“I cannot believe what’s happened.”
“I’m blindingly upset on your behalf!”
“How dare he.”
“IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT HE DID IT, AND YET HE DID.”
“[I don’t know what she said next but it sounded really angry]”
“Trust me when I say that I am going to deal with him.”
“-it exceeds any kind of disrespect amongst engines that I have ever heard of.”
“I had never even assumed one of their kind could stoop so low…”
“With that out of the way, let me be the first inmate to welcome you to the asylum...”

so, the Q6 just fuckin died...
this is the locomotive seen in the footage, the sole surviving North Eastern Railway Raven T2/LNER Q6 No.63395, based at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
and here's the sorry remains of its cylinder, the cause is currently unknown, nor is it known how long a repair will take, but given it's "only" a cylinder the damage isn't quite as devastating as it may seem
#I don't think I've ever seen a cylinder litterally go “pop!”#that motherfucker really said “I do not vibe with this existance” *poof!*

Day Thirteen
Another hot day with a lot of effort undertaken!
I had the good fortune of loading up one two plates of hotel buffet fry up for breakfast, which I knew was going to be very needed as today I hit the Cinder Track to Whitby.
There's no avoiding some hefty climbs around here, but the traffic-free cycle trail follows what used to be an old railway line, so manages to keep the gradients a little sane as we venture around North Yorkshire, over some sweeping views of the coastline past Robin Hood's Bay.
For the most part though it's not a paved trail, and rife with rocks, gravel, and other obstacles, so even the downhill sections at time could be challenging, but finally rewarded with a long descent down to Whitby proper, areiving at the harbour for around 3pm.
After giving the legs a well earned rest, it was time to work out the next step. NCN 1 picks up further around the coast, an hour's slog along a busy A road. Which sounded hellish, so I headed back up the trail out of town to head across the national park on Route 165.
Alas, had I known that this route was plotted by a madman I may have opted for the A road! As well as some very twisty 20% descents, it's featured some of the most hellish climbs I've ever tried with a bike, and I am pretty aure that absolutely no one is capable of physically riding up some of those stretches. I'm pretty sure I've lightly sprained something whilst shoving the bike up them as I have a good bit of a limp currently!
That said, the view after all that climbing, in the quiet village of Aislaby, is gorgeous, and I'm typing this up whilst sat on a bench with a lovely view of the North York Moors and pondering where to find a convenient hedge for the night.

One of the things I've always loved is steam
Steam traction engines.
Steam organs.
Steam fairground rides.
And, of course, steam locomotives.
If I could work anywhere, it would be on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway or at the National Railway Museum, York.
Where did it all begin? Well, probably with Thomas the Tank Engine. My first bedroom had a framed picture of a couple of the characters on the wall and I used to love watching the original series.
But I also saw something that was entirely live action, with a real engine: Fred the Fugitive.

If you want to see more stuff about steam, let me know.
