Beckyyyyy I’m hurtttttt
Okay but Clare, listen...
Emma was adopted by the aristocratic Swann family, who were the best friends of her parents who died in heroic service to the crown. They had their own child when she was 3, but of course they KEPT her both out of loyalty to her parents and because they knew how important it was for their Elizabeth to have a sister.
Though, of course they never intended for her to feel that way, because Emma grew up hearing about her Hero parents, and because the first 13 years of her life were spent in London Society where family and connection were so important knowing that she was an orphan, she always felt inadequate and unworthy.
Things got a bit better, when her adoptive father was named Governor of Jamaica and they moved to Port Royal. Emma and Elizabeth became as close as any two sisters ever could be, stirring up trouble, keeping each other’s secrets, always together.
Until the day of Commodore Norrington’s promotion. One minute she and her sister were giggling about Elizabeth’s condition that her engagement to James be “as short as possible” because she doubted she’d be able to resist rushing their consummation, and then suddenly they were running for the fort. Emma lost track of her sister in the crowd, and by morning, she had learned that she’d been taken by the crew of The Jolly Roger.
Feeling tremendous guilt at not being able to protect Elizabeth, Emma convinces James to release the notorious Pirate Captain Hook from the prison where he was being held awaiting the noose... which she did by breaking the pirate out of jail herself [”We don’t need the keys. Those are half-pin barrel hinges, love. If you pop that bench over there under the bar with the right leverage, the door will lift free.” “How could you possibly know that?” “I once posed as a blacksmith in a small town outside of Charleston for 3 months while I tried to convince the local bank to let me make them all new locks for their vault.” “I thought you were a pirate? Where was your ship all that time?” “I happen to be between ships at the moment, stop asking questions and let me out of here!”] and basically told James that she was going and if he didn’t want two Swan sisters wandering around the Caribbean at the mercy of pirates, he had better come with them...
Of course, that’s the moment when James and Killian recognize each other from their rivalry in during their Naval Academy days, adding a level of familiarity to the tension between them.
Along the way they naturally learn that Emma’s parents were not “Heroes in the Service of the Crown” so much as they were “Pirates with letters of mark allowing them to harass Spanish ships” and she has to come to terms with what it really means to “do the right thing”.
Eventually, they find out that the cursed pirates of the Jolly Roger (under the captaincy of Hector Barbossa, Killian’s former First Mate as well as Mr. Gold who retained his role as Quartermaster after the mutiny) took Elizabeth to Isla Muerta because she gave the surname name Nolan when she was captured and they thought they could use her blood to pay back David’s part in the Aztec Curse.
THIS THING PRACTICALLY WRITES ITSELF
