MICHAEL GOLDBERG
(1924 - 2007)
Along with Norman Bluhm, Grace Hartigan and Joan Mitchell, Michael Goldberg is considered part of the second-generation of abstract expressionists to come out of the New York School. In 1957, he gained increasing critical and commercial success after coming to the attention of the collector Walter Chrysler, who was introduced to Goldberg by his close friend Bluhm and purchased a number of paintings directly from Goldberg’s studio. This private transaction brought the artist to the attention of the influential New York dealer Martha Jackson and enabled him to paint full time.

Norman Bluhm - Wikipedia
Action painting, sometimes called "gestural abstraction", is a style of painting in which paint is spontaneously dribbled, splashed or smeared onto the canvas, rather than being carefully applied. The resulting work often emphasizes the physical act of painting itself as an essential aspect of the finished work or concern of its artist.
