EL ATENEO GRAND SPLENDID, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA (December 24, 2023) One Big Fight! How could I resist passing by and taking snaps in this famed bookstore that carries the same name as my alma mater? The day prior, Paul Pasco took me brought me to the wrong branch; and so today, while he was in Uruguay, I took the subway and relied on my instincts to find in another part of the city this picturesque store. In 2019, the National Geographic named it “the world’s most beautiful bookstore.” Originally the Teatro Gran Splendid of Buenos Aires, it was an auditorium designed in 1919 to pay homage to the Paris Opera with its ceiling mural, marble columns, and elaborately decorated balconies. Today, the stage is a cafe, the orchestra and first balcony are brimming with bookshelves, and the upper floors have been converted into reading rooms for this bookstore, which is just one in a chain of others called El Ateneo.

Tagumpay ng Pag-ibig
youtube
Magsaya, magalak, at magbunyi!
Magsaya, magalak, at magbunyi!
Magsaya, magalak, at magbunyi!

#40 SHARE A BEER WITH DAD
The first time I did was in September of 1983. I was 17 and we were in Tokyo for my upcoming Electone competition. In our hotel room, because dad was craving for a beer, mom suggested that we check out the bar at the ground floor. We ended up sharing a Sapporo there. At a conference in Toulouse, France, participants including my dad and I were herded into a restaurant cum cellar for a glorious night of food and wine. Staggering to get back on the bus (we all were), dad whispered saying I was the stronger drinker. That was sometime in 1993.
Today, dad and I get to share a beer (or some wine)l when we get the chance. We both have personal refrigerators in our offices, and it is not uncommon for him to come into my room with a cold can.

How often has it happened to you that a radio station plays a track that piques your interest and you have no way of finding out what the song’s title is or who even sang it? Hmm, I guess not too often these days since we now have apps that identify such songs for us. But this would happen to me a lot in the past, and I’d resort to scouring the internet and heading out to record bars in a frantic attempt to find a particular song. The same thing happened when I first heard the title track of Laurence Elder’s 2006 album, Surrounded. I think it was the jazz rock groove that got me. Maybe that unusual chord progression too. And it was frustrating that the radio jock didn’t give out much info. I picked up the artist’s last name but really, that didn’t take me very far. I eventually found the track and the album (produced in Germany, I believe) maybe 5 years later. I love Shazam.

IGLESIA DEL SALVADOR, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA (December 24, 2023) After visiting El Ateneo on Christmas Eve and while heading toward the subway station to get back to my hotel, I chanced upon the Iglesia del Salvador, Buenos Aires’s second Jesuit church, which began construction in 1872. Within were statues of familiar Jesuit saints (I recognized the names from our beloved classrooms at the Ateneo Grade School), including of course Ignatius de Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. I'm glad I stopped by. Though I was running a tad late for Christmas Eve dinner.

LA RECOLETA CEMETERY, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA (December 23, 2023)
An odd place to start my first day in South America. But why not? Once the garden of the Recollect monks in Buenos Aires, the cemetery is the final resting place of Argentina’s who’s who, including several presidents, a Nobel Prize laureate, prominent artists and writers, and of course Eva Peron, whose family vault is the most visited there. But the Recoleta Cemetery is a veritable open air museum too, with its 5.5 hectares of elaborate mausoleums and sculptures in Art Noveau, Neo-Gothic, and every style in between. And then there are the stories of those who lie within its tombs. My favorite is of the young lady whose mother was in a hurry to bury her, not realizing that she was still alive. As I write this, the theme music of HBO's Six Feet under is playing in my head.

Pasko Na! (Francisco)
youtube

TOSCANA VILLAGE, BALESIN ISLAND CLUB, POLILIO, QUEZON, PHILIPPINES (25-27 May 2017) On Day 2 of our Balesin getaway, we spent some hours basking under the Tuscan sun--well, we were in the island’s Toscana Village, which is inspired by the region in Central Italy famous for its vineyards, World Heritage Sites, and splendid natural and architectural beauty. After a sumptuous lunch at Trattoria Toscana (try the spaghetti alla vongole), we took frequent dips in the village’s three pools (one is filled with salt water) and lounged under the parasols until our skin took on the color of the terracotta tiles all around us. I should have ordered some limoncello.

BALI VILLAGE, BALESIN ISLAND CLUB, POLILIO, QUEZON, PHILIPPINES (25-27 May 2017) Among the themed spots of the 500-hectare tropical island of Balesin is the Bali Village, where I was fortunate to have been invited for a brief respite from the city life. Situated at the north end of the island, the Bali Village boasts of charming wooden walkways to stilted water villas and the Nusa Dua Bar, which offers a prime view of the Philippine sunset. It was at the bar where we would spend our late afternoons listening to some trippy music, after immersing ourselves in the village’s stone pools. And it was there where I would sip my fizzy drinks while sampling traditional Southeast Asian street food. Thanks to the Gutierrez family for the warm welcome, and to my travel buddies Barok, Leilah, and my godson, Javi, for the splendid respite.

CELSUS LIBRARY, EPHESUS, TURKEY (13 September 2010)
It was one of the largest libraries of the ancient world, completed in 117 A.D., and housing some 12,000 to 15,000 scrolls, all preserved in bookcases built into double walls. I thought I heard myself gasp as we approached its richly-decorated edifice and gazed at its columns, which seemed to extend endlessly. The library’s clever design gives the structure an illusion of monumental size. Its center pillars stand taller than those at the edges to create the feeling that the columns are spread farther apart than they really are. Similarly, the podium on which the pillars rest recede at the sides, allowing one to view the library as though through a fish-eye lens. Between the entrance doorways are four statues set back in niches. The figures represent the qualities associated with the Roman governor Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, to whom the library is dedicated. These qualities are: wisdom (sophia), intelligence (ennoia), knowledge (episteme) and virtue (arete). The Celsus library was clearly the highlight of our tour of the ruins of Ephesus--once the capital of Rome’s Asian province, in the land that is now Turkey. We stepped to the right of the library toward the arched entrance to the agora, anticipating the next magnificent sight to behold.
