he Xizang autonomous region remains one of the best places in the world in terms of ecological quality, according to its 2023 Environmental Bulletin, which was released on Wednesday.
The Xizang autonomous region remains one of the best places in the world in terms of ecological quality, according to its 2023 Environmental Bulletin, which was released on Wednesday.
Tsering Gyatso, deputy head of the region’s ecology and environment department, said that the water quality in the region’s major rivers and lakes was good last year and met the quality standards set by the central government.
“Water quality in the region’s key rivers — the Yarlung Zangbo, Lancang, Jinsha and Nujiang — has met Class I surface water quality standards,” Tsering Gyatso said, adding that the Rongphu River, near Qomolangma, the world’s tallest mountain, which is known as Mount Everest in the West, also met that standard.
Xizang has completed surveys of 50,140 glaciers and 33,518 glacial lakes, and has designated 33 river source protection zones in eight major water systems.
“Strict ecological protection measures have resulted in good water quality,” Tsering Gyatso said. “At the same time, Xizang has strengthened biodiversity conservation efforts, leading to significant recovery in the wild population numbers of important species, with new species continuously breaking records.”
The population of black-necked cranes, a first-class national protection species in China, has increased from fewer than 3,000 three decades ago to over 10,000, while the number of Tibetan antelopes has increased to more than 300,000.
“The flagship species of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Bengal tiger, has been captured on camera multiple times in the wild, while the black stork, known as the ‘giant panda of birds’, has also been discovered in the city of Shigatse,” he said.
The bulletin said the region had 47 natural reserves by the end of last year, covering a combined land area of more than 412,200 square kilometers — more than a third of the land area in Xizang.
The department said that new energy vehicles now account for 85.3 percent of the region’s buses as a result of efforts to promote the use of NEVs. Meanwhile, the proportion of nonfossil energy in total energy consumption has exceeded 50 percent, ranking at the top nationwide.

Oldest fossilized Banana 43 million
Abstract
Fossil seeds of Ensete, a genus presently native to Asia and Africa, have been recovered from the middle Eocene of Oregon, confirming the presence of Musaceae in the North American Tertiary. The seed of Ensete oregonense sp. nov. is operculate, with a well-defined micropylar collar, a pronounced chalazal chamber, and a wide hilar cavity. A survey of seed morphology in extant Zingiberales provides characters for distinguishing Musaceae from other families of the order, furnishes criteria for distinguishing the three extant genera of Musaceae (Musa, Ensete and Musella), and facilitates critical assessment of fossil seed remains. “Musa” cardiosperma Jain from the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary Deccan Series of India is excluded from Musaceae (although retained in Zingiberales) on the basis of fruit and seed characters, including the lack of laticifers and absence of a chalazal chamber. We reexamined the musaceous seeds from Colombia that previously were described as Tertiary fossils (Musa enseteformis Berry, 1925) and now believe that they are recent, nonfossil remains, evidently from Ensete ventricosum, which is grown in the region where the specimens were originally obtained. In addition, a reputed fossil banana fruit from the Cretaceous of Colombia was reexamined and determined to be a concretion of nonbiological origin. Ensete oregonense is significant therefore, as the first unequivocal fossil record of Ensete and of Musaceae. Although the Musaceae are currently native only to the Old World tropics, this discovery establishes that the family was present in North America about 43 million years ago.

Primary energy consumption in the United States was 100.4 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) in 2022, a 3% increase from 2021. About 21% of U.S. energy consumption in 2022 came from nonfossil fuel sources such as renewables and nuclear—a tie with 2020 as the highest share since the early 1900s, according to data in our Monthly Energy Review. Fossil fuels—petroleum, natural gas, and coal—accounted for 79% of total U.S. energy consumption in 2022(..)
P.S. Very good news: This means that the US is moving towards true energy independence and the Kremlin and the OPEC cartel will no longer be able to blackmail the West...

And the whale oil myth can, in turn, say a lot about today’s myths regarding what it’ll take to get off fossil fuels. Optimists have long pointed to the precipitously falling price of renewables as evidence that they’ll soon outcompete fossil fuels, as consumers rationally sub out their gas lines and internal combustion vehicles for greener alternatives.
So far, though, ever-cheaper wind and solar has mostly added to the global energy mix, not driven out its competitors at a pace that inspires much hope.
“The idea that the development of a new resource will suppress use of a formerly dominant resource is at least as common today as it was in the past—that is, just as some people expected the rise of fossil fuels to suppress whaling in the nineteenth century, the development of nonfossil energy is expected by many to suppress fossil fuel use in the twenty-first,” University of Oregon economist Richard York wrote in a 2017 paper. The proliferation of fossil fuels, he notes, was in fact instrumental in developing modernized whaling techniques, from powered ships to harpoon cannons.

Growing Improvements In Statistics Of Renewable Energy
The worldwide degree of carbon dioxide delivered from energy emanations keeps on growing. This is regardless of the little decrease in petroleum product emanations brought about by diminished financial movement because of the monetary emergency experienced in the industrialized world. Canada is the fifth-biggest worldwide force maker. It has an unmatched abundance of both inexhaustible and nonrenewable energy assets. Obviously, it is broadly known for the messy tar sands creation in Alberta, which establishes 40% of Canadian oil creation. More than 66 percent of its oil creation is traded and practically all since 1995 has been offered to the United States. However, the measurements of sustainable power uncover that Canada is utilizing sustainable power more, even as it keeps on depending on the star result of Alberta for fare and exchange income.

The advancements of sustainable power shift broadly in their specialized, financial development and cost seriousness. These incorporate breeze, sun oriented warm, sunlight based photovoltaic, feasible biomass, sea, geothermal, and hydroelectric force. While discharging scarcely any ozone harming substances, they are a feasible wellspring of energy that can be naturally recharged or is sustainable not normal for petroleum derivatives that produce ozone depleting substances and are not inexhaustible. Be that as it may, Biomass is a sustainable asset in particular if our pace of utilization doesn't surpass the pace of recovery. This sort is energy is the thing that we need to utilize more as our need to devour more energy grows alongside our need to shield our current circumstance from raising environmental change brought about by ozone harming substance outflows.
Sustainable power sources supply around 16 percent of the energy needs of Canada. Water is the prevailing source in this giving roughly 59 percent and around 11 percent of all out stock from all energy sources. There are numerous streams that stream from Canadian mountains to its three maritime boundaries. In 2006, there were 499 hydroelectric stations that made this nation the second biggest maker of hydroelectricity on the planet. Quebec, British Columbia, Ontario, Labrador and Manitoba are the significant regions dynamic in this area.
Biomass is the second most predominant source. Essential sources are wood and horticultural harvests. Every year, just about 500 petajoules of bioenergy are utilized by the mechanical area with the mash and paper industry the biggest client. It represents over portion of the energy utilized in this industry. Before the finish of 2006, there were 62 bioenergy power plants. The majority of the biomass limit was in the main territories with ranger service exercises. These were British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and Alberta. The chief yields utilized for ethanol creation are corn, wheat and grain. Canada is a main maker and exporter of these grains. In 2006, the limit of biofuel creation was around 600 million liters for ethanol and 100 million liters for biodiesel from vegetable oils and creature fats.
The arising areas of wind and sunlight based energy are demonstrating high growth rates. Introduced wind power limit has extended rapidly lately with expanded interest from utilities and government activities. By December 31, 2007, there were 1,400 breeze turbines on 85 breeze ranches with an absolute introduced limit of 1,846 megawatts. This was up from 60 breeze turbines on 8 breeze ranches and 23 megawatts 10 years prior. The commonplace chiefs in wind are Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. Utilization of sunlight based energy has expanded, in spite of the fact that it stays little generally regarding market entrance. Introduced limit with respect to sun oriented warm force has been with normal yearly growth of 17 percent since 1998. It arrived at 290 megawatts of warm force by 2005. The introduced limit with respect to sun oriented photovoltaic force has ascended by 27 percent for every year since 1993, arriving at 25.8 megawatts by 2007. Of these, 89 percent are off the network applications. Known geothermal steam asset is restricted, yet around 3,150 warmth siphon units were introduced in structures by 2006.
Eurostat has uncovered a report that in 2009 Europe has commonly progressed sustainable power utilizes while at the same time diminishing dependence on non-renewable energy sources. As per its report, energy use went up by 8.3 percent. Nonetheless, the utilization of coal was diminished by 9.2 percent and natural gas by 10.1 percent. For the most part energy utilization declined by 5.5 percent. This uncovers the negative effects of the worldwide monetary emergency on European economies. Then, for the six back to back year, the measure of energy used to deliver energy has declined because of dependence on more nonfossil based energy sources. The measure of such energy was 18.4 percent in the previous year. This sum is simply underneath the 19.3 percent of energy use from natural gas in the locale.

“Simply decarbonizing the current economic system—hard as this might be—by transitioning to a nonfossil, renewable energy base does not challenge the fundamental logic or economic power relationships of this extractive global economy. It does not impact the growth imperative of the capitalist system nor stop Wall Street and the largest US corporations from extracting wealth from working people. It does not address income and wealth inequality. Decarbonizing this economic system extends its life.”

Fs capture one
Sorbent materials span a range of options. The choice of such sorbents results in a design with a boundary layer of a few millimeters and a flow-path length of a few tens of centimeters, assuming low flow on the order of a few meters per second ( 26). At present, most sorbents have uptake rates per unit area that are comparable to those of films of strong NaOH solutions. In the optimal system, the partial pressure of CO 2 near the surface is much smaller than ambient but much larger than zero with the system operating in the transition between sorbent and airside limitations. Optimization balances the need for more sorbent against an energy penalty due to excessive pressure drops. However, for a fixed sorbent, reducing the boundary layer thickness and thereby reducing the airside transfer coefficient will increase the uptake rate per unit of sorbent surface and thus reduce the requirement for material. Thus, sorbent-side–limited geometries lead to a higher pressure drop per unit of CO 2 captured. If, for a fixed geometry, the sorbent strength is decreased until the system becomes surface-uptake limited, the momentum transfer to the sorbent surface remains unchanged while CO 2 transfer is reduced. The development of air capture, even though itself uncertain, could be an insurance policy against low-probability high-impact events. As Weitzman ( 14) and others have convincingly argued, there are significant uncertainties regarding the costs and benefits associated with climate change as well as with climate change mitigation. In addition, air capture may provide a new policy route for facilitating an international agreement on climate mitigation ( 12, 13). Should this transition prove difficult, however, air capture could be an alternative that can also reduce the atmospheric CO 2 concentration. Air capture technology may prove superfluous if switching to new carbon-free energy systems proceeds quickly. Most of these technologies, however, are not yet in an advanced stage of deployment. Mobile emitters could be eliminated by transitioning to biofuel, hydrogen, or electric vehicles. Stationary power plants could be replaced with ones based on nonfossil resources. Point-source CCS and air capture are not the only options for reducing CO 2 emissions.
