Because of the power outages in Texas recently, and the number of people who were caught completely unprepared, I wanted to make sure that I had what I needed to survive a winter power outage. It's been a concern for a while and seeing the devistation on the news definitely motivated me. It's not enough to have the gear, you have to know it works. You have to know where it is. You need to know how to operate everything. So to that end we cleaned up the oil lamps and refilled them. Set up the buddy heater, and got everything lit up and working. I wanted to see if we would be warm enough and have enough light. So I turned the thermostat down to 60 and we turned off all the lights at about 7 PM. The lamps gave us plenty of light and we had to shut off the heater before 10 pm because it was just too hot in here. It was set on low and it's 18° F outside, 7°F with wind-chill. My phone is fully charged because it's plugged in to the solar battery bank as usual so I'm good for entertainment and news. I'm going to have to call this a successful test. It relieves a lot of worry knowing that I'm not at the mercy of an unreliable power grid.
