This PERFECT Human Being is facing some uncalled for hate in the comments of their original post. I’ve known Sav since I was 14 and you better believe I’d fight to the death for them. ORIGINAL POST: On this #transdayofvisibility, I challenge everyone reading this to go an entire day without using gendered language. You might be surprised at how unnecessary it is. And you might never know just how many people’s day you’ve made better by not assuming their gender based off of a limited interaction. Here are some examples if you are having a hard time figuring out where to start: Greeting customers? Call them folx, or y’all! Canvasing on the street? Remove “Ma’am” or “Sir” and just say “Hey there!” Referring to someone who’s name you don’t know? Identify them by the joy radiating off of them, or by the color of their shirt. Putting up a sign so your toilets don’t get clogged up? Call them Menstruation Products, not feminine. Identifying people by gender in conversation is an outdated and inherently patriarchal way of enforcing a hierarchy of gender. It is meant to be a social cue to everyone involved in the interaction, informing how they should treat the people they are interacting with. This is an entirely outdated formality that our society doesn’t need, as we should all be treating each other with the same exact respect we request people treat us with.
