anyway, this song is somehow both full of braggadocio and self-deprecation, probably because noname sounds like she's smiling real wry while rapping it. it was hard to find a song not by Dessa that had the personality I was looking for: intelligent and witty, but also with that edge. not anger, necessarily, though I really hope you never get angry at me because even the idea makes me legitimately frightened. more like...a warning light. a signal that pushing your buttons too hard and too many times will lead to danger--not (just) for you.

Thinking and talking and writing about Noname today. 100% agree with all her comments recently about her audience and her current hiatus. Appreciate her speaking up. This is a huge problem here in Denver, CO. Performers of color are met with majority white crowds and as Noname said,

“when I go to work, thousands of white people scream the N word  at me. and no I’m not changing my art so it is what it is.” 

White people (and especially in the case, white music fans! HI!) We NEED to figure this out and GET BETTER NOW! It’s fine to go to the shows and buy the albums and merch etc, but we need to be able to understand the complexity of the relationships that artists and performers of color have with their fans of color, on a much deeper level. AND STOP FUCKING SAYING/SINGING THE N WORD! That’s NEVER OK. Appreciate Noname speaking up, but realizing that I need to be better and need to be able to confront my friends and fellow white music fans and challenge them on shit like this.
