Hello, I came across the 'fighting in Ice Hockey' Wikipedia page and was very intrigued! Now several youtube compilations (Best nhl fights, then funny moments, then best goals etc) and several Hockey AUs for pairing I'm already a fan of later, I'm ready to continue my hockey journey (descent?) - do you have any blogs you can recommend? Also do you have a place to start re teams and or like essential viewing or reading? Normally I can just watch a show or read a book, but this feels a bit different and I don't know where to start 😅

Also I see the is quite a bit of RPF on Ao3- totally chill with that good writing is good writing after all, but is there any like background on why certain pairings are popular?

oh goodness, hi! and welcome to the madness that is hockey fandom/hockey rpf! i'm probably/definitely not the best person to answer this as i'm pretty new to hockey fandom and only closely follow three teams, but i'll do my best <3

okay *most* hockey blogs are focused on one or a couple of teams. so it's a little tricky to point you in a direction if you aren't already attached to anyone. you can find a lot of good hockey primers on tumblr if you search for a team or a ship + primer.

if you have a local or localish team, maybe start there? descend into tumblr tag hell. many of us start out going oh haha i'm just going to read fic, and maybe reblog some gifs, and then end up attached to teams that are far away and spend obscene money to see those teams when they travel close to us. (my favorite team is in a different conference, so they only come to my city once a year).

there are definitely teams that have more fandom activity and those that have less. all based on the narratives, baby. my local team isn't very fandom active on here, so while i generally root for them and follow them and go to games, i'm not fandom feral about them.

MY team is the pittsburgh penguins. i do not, nor have i ever, lived in pittsburgh. but the pens have the longest serving trio in professional sports, and i am completely and utterly in love with them (but not as in love with them as they are with each other). our captain, sidney crosby (fat of ass and genuinely one of the best hockey players EVER) and his two alternate captains, evgeni (geno) malkin and kris letang, are all obsessed with each other. sidgeno is definitely one of the most popular pairings in hockey rpf. i read and write a lot of them. you can browse #fave 8771 and #sidgeno on my blog to get a glimpse of why.

(note that hockey ship names are unpredictable. sometimes numbers mushed together, sometimes names mushed together, sometimes something else, sometimes there's not really a ship name).

some other big ships are travis konecny/nolan patrick of the philadelphia flyers (love these two... they don't play together anymore... theres a lot of backstory there. theres lots in #tknp on my page), auston matthews/mitch marner of the toronto maple leafs (not my jam i'm no help), alexander ovechkin/nicklas backstrom from the capitals, leon draisaitl/matthew tkachuk (more of an enemies to lovers type scenario), and jamie drysdale/trevor zegras of the anaheim ducks. these ships are popular bc they are insane about each other in some way. oof there's so many more though? these are all popular on ao3 so there's lots of fic out there; perhaps a good starting place.

There's a part of me that wouldn't mind going through an enemies-to-lovers with Sid, but I also annoy myself with that idea cuz I know if that ever happened to me I'd still be annoyed with the fact that he won me over, the same way he won over Claude Giroux's friendship. Who knows how many people have started off on the wrong foot with him and eventually just found themselves liking him.

Enemies to lovers is more of a nolan patrick vibe. You know what fits sid??? Old flames getting together vibe. Yk, the ones in high school/college who kinda went out, who made that bet saying if they arent married by 30 they get together, yk….that au…..screams sidney

Listen, hockey fics are literally some of the best fics I've ever read. There's so much to choose from but I would also just recommend finding your fave trope or searching for a combination of your fave tags. I don't think you need to know that much about hockey to understand the fics, you'll get the hang of things quickly!

For pairings there's so many options too. For someone who doesn't follow hockey, I'd say, don't worry about the teams, just start reading. Some classic/good starting places would be the below.

Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin: Truly a modern classic and carrying force of hockey rpf. They've been teammates at Pittsburgh Penguins since '06 and they are a bit insane about each other. Hockey media calls them sometimes the Two Headed Monster, they've led the team to three Stanley Cups (main trophy in the NHL, very difficult to win). Kinda a warning for Ovechkin often as a side character, he's a big Putin supporter.

Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick: Situation of opposite personalities attract, one is a sunshine and the other a grumpy cat. Nolan doesn't play anymore, but they used to both play for Philadelphia Flyers (enemy of Pittsburgh Penguins). I've read some amazing gender exploring fics for this pairing.

Leon Draisaitl/Matthew Tkachuk: Enemies to lovers trope is strong with this one. Leon plays for Edmonton Oilers and Matthew used to play for Calgary Flames, which are big rivalry teams, the games between them are called Battle of Alberta. Matthew now plays for Florida Panthers after being traded, so newer fics have potential for a long distance trope. Considering your love for Seb, Leon is also German.

Jamie Drysdale/Trevor Zegras: A newer pairing with amazing works. They used to both play for Anaheim Ducks until recently Jamie was traded to Philadelphia Flyers.

There are 32 teams in the NHL so the opinion on who you should cheer for varies so much. Some of the teams I follow are generally disliked so I don't want to recommend them. I'd stay clear of Chicago Blackhawks, more racism & sexual assault problems than most other teams.

The ratification, a brief Californication, and the post-post friendship tour of Matthew Tkachuk. Or, Leon Draisaitl's ongoing adventures with North American fauna.

This fic is an excellent example of one of hockey rpf fandom's favorite tropes: animal transformation. It's also an excellent example of MattDrai, a very popular enemies-to-lovers pairing!

"Wins Above Replacement" by bossyicynerd 22k. Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick

The author calls this "a love letter to hockey fandom." It's an AU where Nolan is not a player, but instead writes for "the fourth most popular [team] blog" while working a shitty retail job and carrying on an online correspondence with some anonymous guy with lots of hockey opinions...

Travis Konecny/Nolan Patrick was a huge, if brief, pairing on the hockey rpf scene circa 2020, 2021. This fic is a good introduction to both those characters and to the fandom.

"Friday Night Arrives Without A Suitcase" by marycontraire 15k. Danny Brière/Claude Giroux.

Once upon a time (like 2011) Danny and Claude played for the Flyers together. Danny got divorced and immediately invited Claude to move in with him. Claude moved in with him, helped co-parent his kids, and they sent out a Christmas card "from the Briouxs." When a lockout happened, they played hockey in Berlin together. This fic is about that time in Berlin together. It's a classic pairing with lots of domesticity and kidfic. This one is a reverse!curtain fic, kind of?

Josty matches with a vamp on Tinder, and it's all downhill from there. Vignettes in the life of Nate Dogg, accidental vampire interviewer.

This fic is so dear to me. Hilarious and a pitch-perfect Colorado Avalanche ensemble from the era of that team that is beloved to me. Incredible worldbuilding here for a fic where the author's note says "dumb immortality jokes ONLY. NO vampire worldbuilding and NO deep questions about the nature of eternity."

Closed Fracture by lightgetsin 6k. Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin

"You're on Puck Daddy," Taylor said, instead of a greeting. Sidney sank back into the pillows. "So? What's new?" "The headline is 'Best Hockey Player in the World Sidney Crosby Taken Out by Eight Year Old, Breaks Arm in Mite Hockey Game.'"

Sid and Geno are one of the juggernaut pairings of this fandom. They've been playing together for almost 20 years! There are, to some extent, two phases of fic about them: earlier (late 2000s-mid 2010s) and recent (mid-late 2010s onwards). I admit my favorite examples of early-career fic for them are all way, way over 10 to 15k. ("and never been kissed" is a fandom classic for a reason, but it's like 200k, lol.) This is a cute fic and a good example of early Sid/Geno fic dynamics.

"Flip Shut, Hang Up" by thehoyden, twentysomething 4k. Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin.

By the fourth time Crosby has hung up on him, Alex has to admit that this has gone from funny to, frankly, a little hurtful.

This is another great example of early Sid/Geno fic (featuring interfering Russians, another popular trope). It's set during the last lockout, during which Crosby was part of the team of players negotiating with league management and Geno was playing in Russia. "Zhenya" is also Geno. The Alex/Sasha in this fic is Alex Ovechkin, star player on a rival team.

Sid had typed out multiple texts in those first few agonizing weeks, but nothing looked right. Sorry I slept with your wife. Sorry I did it while you watched—I thought, for some reason, that was what you both wanted.

This is a great fic full of feelings! Friends-to-lovers with an OT3 endgame. It packs so much into 22k. It's also an excellent example of later-career Sid/Geno fic!

"A Case Study in Non-Traditional Pack Dynamics" by 7iris 7k. Carey Price/PK Subban.

"Well, you're going to have to bring him along anyway," Kayla says. "Bring me where?" PK asks, flipping his menu open. "The Greater Pacific Northwest Werewolf Symposium," Kayla says. "Duh."

I had to put at least ONE Carey/PK fic on this list. They LOVE each other okay and I'm still not over them both retiring. This fic is a canon-plus-werewolves fic and uses a lot of tropes from Teen Wolf fic, so it should feel familiar! It's a great fake-dating story.

"You So Quite New" by knight_tracer, thefourthvine 27k. Paul Kariya/Teemu Selänne/Sirpa Selänne.

This fic is a fae!AU that is, in large part, about disability. Some years after Paul retired from hockey due to complications from repeated concussions, Paul and Teemu have to swap bodies.

"Hockey at the End of the World" by ionthesparrow 25k. Jeff Carter/Mike Richards

Dystopian AU featuring plenty of even-more-violent-than-irl hockey. The Ballad of Carts and Richie (actual words a newspaper used once) is one of the greatest bromances of hockeydom, and this fic is one of the best written for them. I feel the word "gripping" is overused but I can't think of any other way to describe this fic!

"catch and release" by lagyeggplant. 14k. Mathew Barzal/Anthony Beauvillier

Tagged "the mortifying ordeal of your best bro seeing your nudes." Ladyegg writes spectacular fic and does the best bro voice I've ever come across. Incredible, hilarious sports bro narrative voice every time (along with hot smut).

What kind of hockey fic are you looking for? Short, long? Is explicit a problem? Are you into enemies to lovers or domesticity or animal transformation or werewolves or do you want something completely off the wall bonkers?

Truth be told. Im not a hockey watcher and don't really know much about the players or teams or anything but I've heard how amazing the fic is and I do want to start watch hockey next season so something that is a good intro maybe?

Explicit is fine with me, I do enjoy it but its also fine if it doesn't have smut. For length I would say no more than like 10k to 15k or several shorter fics that total that?

I love all the tropes. I don't have any squicks or triggers but I think since I don't know the lore something canon or hockey related would be good to start with but I trust your judgement on that because I love a good au as much as the next person

hello! so a few days back somehow oona stevebucky's blog started talking about hockey rpf and i was a mere clueless anon who has never read any sports rpf before but since then i have been going insane and reading nonstop on ao3 just going down the list in order of kudos. actually pretty sure today is the only day i didn't read hockey rpf because georgenap streamed. anyway, i'll take any and all hockey rpf recs if you have them no preference because i don't know anything about hockey. thanks!

okay i wanna give you a good list with some variety that were written at least a year ago! and im operating under the impression that you have an ao3 account because i know some if not most of these are locked.

this was a random one i found a long time ago that i’ve reread so many times it’s carter hutton/jacob markstrom and i know literally nothing about them but they hook up one night and neither of them know they’re pro hockey players and it’s just a comedy of errors. so good

this a mcstrome one (connor mcdavid/dylan strome) and i don’t ship them that much but i love college roommate au’s and this one is a banger (this is the sequel too)

this one is sidgeno royalty/fantasy au and the author said it’s a game of thrones au but i’ve never watched it so i don’t actually know how accurate to game of thrones it is. but it’s so good if you like royalty stuff

this one is marnthews which is my favorite ship. they’re both teachers here. there’s also mcstrome in this one!! they do play beer league hockey though so there’s some, but it’s still an au

another marnthews one, mitch marner secret genius!! they’re still pro hockey players but he’s just insanely smart and auston finds out one day. honestly all of this author’s stuff is really good, i’ve read it all multiple times

william nylander/zach hyman and it’s just domesticity and pining and oblivousness. basically just when your bro is maybe more than your bro but neither of you are talking about it

this is nolan patrick/travis konecny and it’s a coffee shop au. everyone loves a good coffee shop au right!

this one is a bit of a rarer pair but one i enjoy! mitch marner/dylan strome. it’s an au where people can give their hearts to the people they love to keep safe and mitch is very much in love

another good one is nico hischier/nolan patrick they’re a way less antagonistic jack and connor and i love them. this one is a bit of an au where the fae exist and are part of nico’s culture it’s just v neat!!

last is connor mcdavid/jack eichel and a lot of this pairing is enemies to lovers. this one less so compared to others but it’s connor focused and it’s like a series of different times he comes out

some fun gritty lore for you, my friend, is that fake dating? it's my all time favorite trope. so this list is gonna be a lil bit uhhhhhhhh excessive? hope you don't mind

throw me on the first line by lotts is my all time favorite fake dating fic, and more fun gritty lore: i tweeted about rereading my fav fake dating fic recently and then had to explain to ao3 user lotts that it was their fic. the mortifying ordeal of being perceived, ya know? but it's an absolute gem of a zach hyman/willy nylander fic. their characterization and dynamic are so fun, and zach is his own biggest enemy. it's fun and charming and sweet, and cannot rec it enough

something old by uraneia is a danny briere/claude giroux fic that on top of being fake dating, is a break up and make up fic. i really love the twist of having the fake dating be between exes, because it's a different kind of tension than you normally get

all i wanna, ain't no other by crookedsilence is actually a nate mackinnon/cale makar fic that i read for the first time this week-i didn't know crookedsilence had a fake dating au, and when i stumbled across it i was so excited-add bonus of also being a "didn't know they were dating" fic, which meant that about half way through my second hand embarrassment got so bad that i had to close out of the fic and put my phone down for a few hours until i could finish it. absolutely worth it though

give you the moon by therainbowsedge is a travis konecny/nolan patrick fic where they're both long term camp counselors at summer camp. it's funny and sweet and the take on fake dating is a personal fav of mine

figures drawn to scale by lotts back again with more lotts but this time it's nate bastian/mikey mcleod/dylan strome, an absolute gem of a college au with fake dating and polyamory negotiations. it's a slightly different take on the trope (fake dating for a study, rather than one of the usual reasons) and it's fresh and fun and one of my favorite polyamorous ships in hockey, tbqh

baby that's the fun of me by blamefincham and thistidalwave is an absolutely stellar carter hart/kevin hayes fake dating au, with the best twist-they're pretending to date, not to fool anyone or anything like that, but so that carter can (kind of reluctantly) learn how to date. we all know i love a good trope inversion

stop making sense by vidriana is a kasperi kaparnen/willy nylander is just, peak soft idiots to lovers, which is entirely what i want to see in the trope. the dynamic between them, the chirping and how much they care about each other, is just so so so good

wait and see by marmolita is a sidney crosby/nate mackinnon BDSM verse fic where doms have to collar a sub by a certain age to stay in the league. it's a super fun, and i think that sid/nate is a ship that is just so overlooked for those who are into friends to lovers

too fragile just to guess by spiritsflame is jamie benn/tyler seguin and it is an excellent example of miscommunication and how complicated things can get when the people faking a relationship have a history beyond friendship

swear to be overdramatic and true by lotts i know this is the third lotts fic on this list but hear me out it's tyson barrie/nate mackinnon and an absolutely beauty of the idiots to lovers trope, as well as being a nontraditional take on fake dating.

sure thing by bitter_leaf is just the loveliest nate bastian/mikey mcleod fake dating fic-it's messy and delves into the ways that fake dating can hurt the people involved, and it just feels so real, when it comes to the emotions

a college AU where the mc is tutoring hockey boy because he needs to pass to play - I picked Boeser for this because I am 100% positive he's never had a thought in his life (honorable mention to everyone who sent me who they thought was the dumbest hockey boy for this one)

a summer love story that takes place in a lil beach town in which you have a super hot neighbor that you won’t stop embarrassing yourself in front of - i actually wasn't entirely sure who to pick for this one because the natural answer was Brock but I need to write that first one with him for selfish reasons and I went with Barzy! (honorable mention to hot summer svech i don't write for him bc he's a baby but i did laugh)

mc is famous and has to date some brooding hockey player for publicity but you argue all the time behind closed doors until oops theres one bed in a hotel room - I went with Tito for this one because bc New York and those Anna Kendrick tweets

we’re both night people and keep running into eachother at a food truck that’s open all night so now we eat street tacos and complain about how we can’t sleep (turns out we can only sleep when we’re with eachother) - I would've selfishly picked Nolan Patrick so I'm glad you guys did too that is my greasy stoner boyfriend who would OBVIOUSLY get baked and eat midnight tacos (plus philly is the weirdest place on earth we all need that)

tysonbaerrie: I love them, especially with fics that I never want to end. 

macknnons: Yeah? I don’t feel like I’ve read a lot of sequels but I know I’ve enjoyed some. I admit I’ve encountered sequels where it felt like the vibe was not the same than the first fic but well, depends.

pattyrosyteeks : i think i’m take it or leave it on sequels except for certain series or if there were loose ends to tie up.
