Look at this glorious illustration @praise-the-lord-im-dead drew of Noemie Gardeine, the main character from my old WIP, The Brilliant Hour.
This is from a scene in the first chapter. It's the moment when Noemie's in her performance clothes at a Night Market festival, and spots a flaming bottle of oil thrown from a great height, about to smash.
Didn't @praise-the-lord-im-dead do a terrific job?
#I had planned on saving this to share with an excerpt but the passage in question is being stubborn and I didn't want to put it off too long#I love that she looks like a fourteen year old. She looks like she could be in my lower high class. I love her flyaways from under her#khustka. I love the sense of space and how much the foreshortening does for the picture - look at the distance between her hands!#I love how she's alarmed but the alarm is still processing - not overstated#I love all the embellishments on her clothing and the rich greens and purple. I love the poof and fittedness of her sleeves#and wraps at her ankles and her excellent shoes for tumbling in.#I love the artistic angle and the feeling of motion beginning#I love how it looks like she's tried to piece together a cohesive and festive look with the fancy clothing pieces she has picked up along#the way of her life but it's not all made to match because there's no way she could get her hands on a complete outfit.#And I love the background colour - the Night Market is full of bonfires and gold falling from overhead and red canvas vendors' stalls#so these warm tones work really well!#Thank you for all the skill you brought to this piece#And you all - you all should go commission her if you ever have a chance!#the brilliant hour#noemie#canvas of the eye#noveling#my writing

Noemie's new collaboration with influencer Sakimaru has a black onepiece with pink bows, alongside the usual black and white plaid print we're all familiar with! It also comes in pink and blue.

HI big big interested in noemie & darcy being similar as observers of others while wishing for connection(s) and winding up in the same IT workplace in the past and also i just adore both their designs. i think they're my top two favorites <33
ok who am i kidding all of the chamberland charas make me want to eat drywall; some of them truly are just ships passing for each other, all of them wonderfully unique & yet sharing traits in one way or another. a lovely lovely cast.. your descriptions of all of them make their personalities so clear :}
Darcy and Noemie have to be two of my favorite characters to compare because on a surface level when you check out their interactions with people they can seem extremely different, but like you said they are so so similar in this feeling of observing others, unable to put themselves out there or know how to engage with others so they take up the role of witness.
Noemie and Darcy were extremely close when working together, Darcy has a lot of unresolved parental issues as they were given up by their parents at a young age, and Noemie tends to accidentally pull in a lot of attention like that. She's unknowingly receptive to that treatment. Noemie craves the freedom and lack of ties Darcy has, and Darcy craves the power and responsibility Noemie has. Darcy losing their job almost felt like being abandoned all over again.
The three of them were very close at one point.

I plan on translating it to more 2 languages and also leave a coloring book available to free download!
Let's see if I can do it! Lol

Character asks, for Noemie: 8, 10, 19
Thank you for the ask! Let's see what I can tell you about Noemie Gardeine.
What is the origin of their personality? And let’s be honest - how much of it is projecting?
Her personality is a mix of a bunch of pictures and music I absorbed while I was gathering material for this story some years back. Probably some influence from Mosca Mye.
And then maybe some of it was a brutal determination my part to write a female lead character whom I would truly love. I have plenty of beloved female leads in fiction, but at the time I started writing this story, I was trying desperatley to break out of a weird bubble I was in where I couldn't seem to create any girl characters I loved. This probably came from some things I internalized as a kid despite my parents' best efforts. I was always more interested in the boys because they seemed to have more adventures and be funnier in the stories. The vast majority of my characters were male up to a certain point in my life, even though in real life most of my friendships were with girls. And eventually I called myself out on this, and tried my darndest to prove to myself that I was capable of writing a heroine I enjoyed. And Noemie emerged, and I am very fond of her. And she opened up a door to all kinds of other dear women characters I have created since.
In terms of projecting on her? She shares my love of performance, and love of human connection through shared creativity. A sort of having no middle ground between acquaintance and best friend ever - everyone she loves, she loves to the core, which is rather like me. She also has my deep love of family. Also fourteen year old me would have found her really cool and fun.
What is their main character arc in the story? Where do they start and how do they develop? Do they get a happy ending or is their story a tragic one?
Noemie starts her arc desperately determined to win more time. Time to scratch up the remaining money for the down-payment on her ailing father's debt before the year's deadline is up. Before he gets moved from "the hospice" (the more lenient prison for shorter term prisoners) to the infamous Blazonrain Prison. She has spent the last year on the road, on caravan, trying every last trick of the trade to get money besides stealing, and pinched every penny. As Chapter One opens, there are five days left before the deadline. Miraculously, she has nearly enough - but not enough that she would earn the rest in five days. She returns to Morceaux, the tiny city state full of soaring buildings and crisscrossing bridges over the streets, where he is imprisoned, with a plan to trick the consul into giving her an extension.
Through a series of unfortunate twists of fate, Noemie ends up losing all the money's she's gathered, with no chance of an extension. Her father is moved to Blazonrain, where she is permitted one visit - she can see immediately that with his health condition, he unlikely to survive there long. Down-payment is no longer an option - the debt must be paid in full if he's ever to walk back out its door.
Her only hope seems to be Alain, whom she had reason to believe is rolling in cash - if only she can manoeuvre him the right way. Shouldn't be too hard. He pretends to be sharp-witted, but she can see he's too naive for his own good. But before long it's not about money. They get sucked into something larger than themselves. It's about rescue situations. It's about subterfuge and politics. It's about ending up on the wrong people's radar. It's about ethics. It's about the wake of revolution. It's about family. It's about the brink of possible war. It's about altruism and need. And it's about having to join the Circle of Fetes, the world's most spectacular performing company, who are housed beneath the former royal palace of Morceaux.
She gets her happy ending - but she has to earn it first.
What is your general favourite thing about the character? What is your least favourite?
I like how Noemie tends to spur other characters into fun dialogue, because she is doggedly invested in every conversation she gets into, and something in her pushes people to share their real thoughts. My least favourite is that as she's the spunky, street-smart girl, I have to be careful to avoid slipping into cliche characterizations, and I'm not always successful.
