"February 17th, 1943 - Part 1 of 2: A Rough Day off South Africa" Eighty Years Ago, Today: (Wednesday) February 17th, 1943: 75 miles southeast of New London, South Africa, the British steamer “SS Llanashe” (Pic 1) is torpedoed and sunk by U-182 (Type IXD2). 3500 tons of precious tin and aluminum are lost with her… as are 33 of her crew. Nine survivors will be in a lifeboat for 11 days before rescue. 90 miles away to the northwest, another ship is lost. 10 miles south of Port Alfred, SA, the American steamer “SS Dear Lodge” (Pic 2) spots U-516 (IXC) on the surface in hot pursuit. The ship makes a run for it, and zig zags. However, her steering gear breaks, leaving her unable to maneuver. The first torpedo explosion is so violent it launches her deck cargo – three trucks and four railroad locomotives – right over the side in one shot. A second torpedo snaps her in two. Incredibly, only two men are killed. 55 others make it onto the boats, and are rescued. It may be just another day, but the Germans do not get away unscathed. I couldn't complain when someone was going too rough, because everyday was a legit fight. Sometimes @driverabjj and I would get so competitive we would put on the MMA gloves and fight. It was the culture, Lions eat and the rest quit. THANKFULLY that culture changed. It's not about catering to the strong, it's about helping those weaker become strong. Trust me when I say I have had the toughest training sessions with the toughest men, blood and tears, sweat and broken bones, and I'm still here saying Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone!!! Look at my Academy now, great people from all walks of life. It's not our job to prove how tough we are, it's our job to prove how kind we are. I've stood among killers on and off the mat, and I'll tell you, it's the nice guys that prevail. Today it is tradition to decorate the Christmas tree, but our fir tree has been ready for a while. The joy of decorating with the people you love, the lights that make everything beautiful and comfortable. I find a little peace by listening to Christmas songs after days with the mind k.o.
