A new mini pencil comic! This was an event that happened to me as a kid and about the meanest teacher I ever had...I dont usually draw childhood memories but if you want to see how it got even worse with this teacher, I can draw the next part haha.

Okay so basically, let us assume that these stairs are made the way stairs usually are made in Hammer: rectangles and a clip brush. There are two ways I can think of that something like this would result

1. You fucking idiot you did a visible nodraw

2. You fucking fool you forgoted a step

You fucking idiot you did a visible nodraw

Nodraw is a texture in hammer that tells the game "do not render this brush face". It's very useful for map optimization since it doesn't render what you don't see, therefore the game doesn't waste time rendering it. A good practice that good map makers do (note: i am not a good map maker and do not do this) is to make ALL the geometry nodrawn and then texture the individual visible faces. This could have happened if the mapmaker was texturing the stairs and somehow totally missed a face.

This can happen if the mapmaker somehow straight up didn't include the step. Maybe they deleted the brush by accident, whatever. If this happened, various things may result.

1. The hole leads to the skybox

I've only ever done Portal 2 mapping, so I've never used a skybox. Like ever. But I'm pretty sure this is a thing that can happen? It could happen if the entire map was encased in a skybox brush but like idk

2. The hole leads to the void

Impossible since hammer straight up doesn't compile maps with leaks
