@Regrann from @kschoemeraxe - "Any real change implies the breakup of the world as one has always known it, the loss of all that gave one an identity, the end of safety. And at such a moment, unable to see and not daring to imagine what the future will bring forth, one clings to what one knew, or thought one knew; to what one possessed or dreamed that one possessed." ~ James Baldwin, "Faulkner and Desegregation" 🛤 More than half a century later, still ahead of his time. 🛤 #books #bookstagram #jamesbaldwin #nobodyknowsmyname #essays #nonfiction #fucktrump #igreads #met_createchange #Regrann

Charles White’s “Nobody Knows My Name #1” is a significant work from 1965 responding to the Civil Rights movement. James Baldwin published his same-titled collection of essays just a few years earlier. In response to White’s work, David Driskell wrote “Nobody Knows My Name is one work that clearly addresses his concern for the African-American's invisibility in the American experience.” This important drawing, which was exhibited at ACA in New York in 1965, is coming to auction October 4. #africanamericanart #charleswhite #nobodyknowsmyname #jamesbaldwin #daviddriskell #civilrights https://ift.tt/2nJ4fT1

Baldwin and Black Pathology
Over lunch with a hometown mentor, Black pathology as cultural residue was mentioned. This is the notion--bottomless, at best--that Black folk’s issues are picked up and carried from generation to generation. What is not concerned in this notion is this Republic’s history. We effectively decided, and continue to decide, to implement injurious policy. Those policies continue to injure Black folk.
“The situation of our youth is not mysterious. Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them. They must, they have no other models. That is exactly what our children are doing. They are imitating our immorality, our disrespect for the pain of others.”
(Baldwin, “Fifth Avenue, Uptown”, 1961, p.  59)
