C A E S A R S A L A D Much has been said about Caesar Salad and how it’s been butchered, yet still being called a Caesar. Uncle doesn’t know much about Western food but the Caesar Salad at No. 117 Cafe, Trafalgar Rd, Onehunga has been given a modern take while maintaining all the core elements. Edible flower haters will be appalled by the garnish (bachelor button/corn flower) that sits pretty on the Caesar. No minor culinary distraction, so no big deal sweeties. Uncle knows (but not from Google/Wikipedia, mind, but from his years working on a food magazine) the salad is named after an Italian-American restaurateur Caesar Cardini from Tijuana, Mexico. Today’s Caesar has baby romaine lettuce, soft boiled egg, crispy bacon, anchovy fillets, sourdough crouton, Parmesan crispy and anchovy dressing. L I N G U I N E Pasta of the Day at No.117 Cafe is Linguine with pan-fried chicken, parmesan cheese shards and truffle oil. Requested just minimal cream and it was perfect. Uncle polished everything up, including the edible flowers. There has been a lot of new eateries opening recently; if only they can replicate the wonderful, attentive & friendly service the No.117 crew provides. Today’s Pasta. Cupping on the back is over in Onehunga so Uncle is looking forward to have lunch at No. 117 Cafe on Trafalgar Street. When he tells Jane he’s thinking of having the Pasta of the Day again, she’s worried and thinks Uncle might not like it. Last week, it was the double cheese spaghetti, so rich he had to stop at Cornwall Park on the way home and find a shady spot to lie down; like the proverbial python in Sarawak that has just ”eaten” a whole chicken. But he disgresses; today’s pasta is spaghetti, served with chicken & mushroom. Jane says she tell Chef John to hold the cream. That does the trick; the dish is fresh and the microgreens spot 2 edible flowers (nasturtiums). Yesterday it was a Chicken Pie, today it’s Spaghetti, with bacon and double cheese (mozzarella & parmesan) some more. Jane, our server was worried Uncle might not really enjoy it (yup it was very rich) but she said at least I could eat the 2 flower garnishes. First time I've had a spag with edible flowers. My Italian chef friends won't be impressed. No.117 Cafe Ions ago, No.177 Cafe on Trafalgar St, Onehunga was Trafalgar House, est.1863. Over a year ago, Chef/Owner John Zhang established No.117 Cafe. With a smart fit-out, a modern menu and a team of the most attentive and gracious waitstaff headed by Jane, it's easy to see why No.117 is such a success with locals and visitors alike, even though it's a stand-alone from the Onehunga Mall strip.
