"Africa the continent is not just what we see on the news. "I've never met a community of people this warm, and this laid-back and this relaxed," she says. "I'm very used to people saying to me, 'You paint a very optimistic, positive picture of the country.' I think that I'm a writer who works at that end of the spectrum."įor her part, Scott feels like the series' depiction of Botswana is fair, after her experience living there during the location shoot.

"It's certainly not in keeping with the overwhelming majority of the rest of the incidents in the series of books," he says. The first installment, in fact, features a dark storyline about witchcraft - something McCall Smith says he regrets now, with 10 No. He trained as a lawyer, and ended up in Botswana helping to create its first law school.īut for all the writer's law-and-order background, the series turns out to be less about solving crime and more about solving people's problems - which are often fairy-tale-like mysteries. McCall Smith was born and grew up in what is now Zimbabwe, neighbor to Botswana. She's fairly typical of many people whom you meet in that part of the world." "She's a very intelligent woman, she's kind, she's forgiving - she's just the sort of person you'd like to sit down and have a cup of tea with. "Well, she's a woman of great intuitive ability," McCall Smith says of Ramotswe. "It was amazing to me that an entire culture of people could be so generous with their energy and spirit." "I kept meeting women who were sweet - just genuinely sweet and smart," she says. Scott says she discovered a strong sense of the character while filming in Botswana. "But there's another thing that she has - she tries to achieve some sort of resolution between people, which may mean actually forgiving somebody." "She does have a very strong sense of justice and what is right," McCall Smith explains. McCall Smith found his flesh-and-blood heroine in Scott, who portrays Ramotswe as having enormous confidence and a sense of her own beauty - even when the skinny girls come around to call her "fatty." It's the first leading role for the performer. Singer Jill Scott plays Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's only lady detective, in the series. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency - Alexander McCall Smith's charming, best-selling book series - comes to American audiences this Sunday as an HBO miniseries. THE BOY WITH AN AFRICAN HEART (29 Mar 09)Ĥ.Anika Noni Rose plays Mma Makutsi, Ramotswe's quirky secretary. One of the cutest crime drama series you’ll see in a long long time is The Number One Ladies Detective Agency, based on the best selling series of novels by Alexander McCall Smith. First published in Great Britain in 1998, it sold slowly at first, and it did not. 27)įYI: Anchor is simultaneously issuing two other titles in this series, General audiences will welcome this little gem of a book just as much if not more than mystery readers. Images of this large woman driving her tiny white van or sharing a cup of bush tea with a friend or client while working a case linger pleasantly. Mma Ramotswe's love of Africa, her wisdom and humor, shine through these pages as she shines her own light on the problems that vex her clients. Note
for someone who is not "any good at tapping into characters" you were spot on, IMO. maybe you should try writing a fic. ✍️ i hope you get a nice pile 📚 with some new favorites in it. only ten days to find out 🎁 what are some of your favorite books/authors?
Oh thank you! You are too kind!  - Perhaps I will one day if I ever stop procrastinating my own other writing projects! lol
Gosh yes it’s only 10 days away now! Time has been really moving fast!
Favourite Authors - well I have quite a few! Sarah J. Maas is in the top there along with Sarah Raasch and Victoria Aveyard. Keira Cass is another favourite, along with Carola Dunn, Megan Whelan Turner, Ann Aguirre, Edward Marsten and Neil Gaiman.
Books well ahem. That’s another story. Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas has got to be one of my all time favourites. Just the characterization and worldbuilding are just stunning! hjasf;ls Red Queen, Remanent Chronicles, Snow Like Ashes, The Selection and Queen’s Thief series are also favourites. I also have a soft spot for murder mysteries - Daisy Dalrymple, The Railway Detective and the No1. Ladies’ Detective Agency are my favourites of those. There are a whole bunch others as well but they are not coming to me right now.
I’m actually trying to branch out more into adult SF/Fantasy as well as rope in a few more murder mysteries. What about you?
