Team Fortress 2 Verse
Below, you will find a profile for Bill’s Team Fortress 2 verse, where he works as an Admin and occasional supplier. To be honest, it’s pretty much the same (even his backstory) as his regular self, except the game is set around the 60s/70s and Bill is an admin/supplier.
Name: William Godolphin IV (he started going by Bill Cyrus Goodwin during the 1800s, the surname was changed first during the 1500s, and he added the middle name in the mid 1950s)
Nickname: Vampire of Roxbury, Old Bill, Monster, Admin
Age:  Around 800 years old (looks to be in his early to mid-thirties)
Birthday: 7th December 1171 (Star sign: Sagittarius)
Gender: Cis Male (he/him/his pronouns)
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual.
Species: Vampire (died and turned in the year of 1203)
Powers and Abilities: Mesmerism (able to force people to obey his commands, entrance them, or forget that they encountered him, it’s arguably his strongest skill, but it works a lot better when he’s also applying physical contact), flash steps (he can move at abnormal speeds. He can cross a long distance in a literal blink), heightened senses, forming very long claws, regeneration (the time it takes depends on the severity of the wound and how long it’s been since he last fed). Able to create his own shadow weapons of sorts, such as using them to create tendrils to grab/damage opponents, and he can smell lies ‘like when someone rips ass in a car’.
Weaknesses: Can’t enter a place without being invited (however, that doesn’t stop him using his mesmerism to force people to invite him in), some people can naturally see through the glamour and/or resist his mesmerism, fire (kills all vampires), sunlight (surprisingly, it doesn’t kill him, but it still burns him to the bone, leaves him in horrible pain, and makes him wish he could die), can’t utilise his super speed if he’s being watched (he can move quickly while you blink though), cannot consume normal food or drinks without vomiting them up again soon after (he still has eaten or drank normal things for the taste),  the sap and juice of fresh plants burns him like acid, and holy symbols repel him (as long as the wearer/user knows this and/or has faith that it will. If it works, in his point of view, the symbol glows in a blinding light and he feels the sensation of something pushing him back.)
Ethnicity: White
Current Residence: Mainly lives and works at Coldfront base, but moves around as needed.
Former Residence: Many. His very first was Penzance in Cornwall, and then he kept moving from place to place after he was turned. During the 1500s, he moved to the United States, and now subconsciously speaks with an American twang (currently, his accent is associated with Massachusetts.)
Nationality: English (in particular, he came from Cornwall)
Mother: Glanna Godolphin (deceased)
Father: William Godolphin Sr. (deceased)
Siblings: None. He was the only surviving child out of eleven.
Other Family: He does have a few distant living relatives who are unaware of his existence due to having cousins that kept passing their blood on.
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 200lbs
Body Type: Mesomorph/Muscular
Hair: Ginger, as is his beard.
Eyes: Very pale grey with slit pupils and red sclerae (Regular grey with normal pupils and sclerae when glamouring)
Languages: English, American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), Cornish, French, German, Russian and Latin and currently learning Japanese (he’s had plenty of time to learn.)
Distinguishing features: He has major burn scars on the right side of his abdomen, chest, part of his right arm, and just above his butt. A hunter managed to set him on fire. Luckily, before it could kill him, he managed to put himself out. That Hunter paid with her life. He is always physically cold.  He can see himself in mirrors, despite popular belief. He’d be very sad if he couldn’t. The same goes for photographs. However, he doesn’t cast a shadow. If he doesn’t drink blood for a long time, he starts to age. Drinking blood reverses this effect.
He has three scars on his chest that are either from arrows or crossbow bolts. They’re all under his left pec muscle. He can only assume that that was how he died before he became a vampire; someone had shot at him three times and at least one of the projectiles had killed him.
He has a birthmark on the back of his left hand that’s shaped like a crescent. He often jokes that it’s because one of his ancestors was a werewolf. He also has a tattoo of a Cornish Heath plant snaking around and down his outer upper thigh.
He usually is in a ‘glamour mode’ of sorts in order to blend in with mortals a lot more easily. He can turn this on and off as he wishes, but some people are able to still see through it when it’s on. When he’s ‘glamouring’, his fangs look like normal teeth, his skin looks more like a healthy pink than the deathly white veiny visage it actually is, and his eyes look a warm grey with regular pupils rather than yellow with slit pupils and red sclerae.
If you can get him drunk (he needs to feed on a drunk person), tired enough (wake him up during the day), or flustered enough (good luck with that one), he’ll revert back into his English/Cornish accent.
He always carries a gun on his person; an original Colt Frontier Six-Shooter, of the Bisley 1895 model, 'just in case’.
Hobbies and Interests: Dancing, astronomy (might as well enjoy the stars if you’re nocturnal), origami, drawing, mythology (he has met some figures of myth, or so he claims), and smithing. He’s also pretty good at playing acoustic and electric guitars, acoustic and electric violins, a lyre, the harmonica, the ocarina, and the accordion.
Occupation: He works as a supplier and admin for both BLU and RED, at TFI. He simply does what he is asked by the higher-ups, but takes requests from the regular crew as needed. He is NOT connected to respawn due to his vampirism.
Personality: He’s friendly, he’s confident, and he can be rather eccentric at times. He’s far from shy and he enjoys the company of others. He lives to entertain, laugh, spread laughter and merriment, and give and get validation.
However, he can come across as conceited, arrogant, a show-off, a bit of a large ham at times, and/or a little bit too full-on for some people. That said, he honestly doesn’t mean harm (not anymore at least) and if you’re his friend, he will kill for you and do what he can to keep you happy.
He’s usually quite hard to anger. He can laugh off most insults or even attempts to hurt him physically. However, if you do make him mad, it’s your funeral, or at least your mind’s. He does try to keep himself in check however. He has no plans to go back to the sadistic bastard that he used to be.
Basic Backstory: Starting out his life in the coastal town of Penzance, Cornwall (in England), William Godolphin was the only survivor of the eleven children his parents gave birth to. His father was a lord and his mother was a blacksmith’s daughter who was married into the family.
William lived a fairly easy and unremarkable life with his loving mother, not-so-loving father and a few servants. His father made sure he worked hard however, not wanting to hand him everything on a silver plate, and told the same of his servants. That said, William was fairly well off, and spent his childhood and adult years getting ready to take on his father’s estate. On finding out his bloodline’s wealth and notoriety was founded on thievery, murder, extortion, he was not so willing to do so, but he was unsure of how to find a way out of it.
However, at the age of 31 years old, tragedy struck, and he was attacked and bitten while taking a walk. Despite being weakened by a draining of his blood, he was still determined to get home. But then he was shot and killed, reviving as a vampire soon after. He has no clue how he became a vampire, and who made him (although his maker would often speak into his head), and it did take him some time to get used to his new condition. However, after about fifty years or so, he managed to wrap his head around all of it.
He started out his unlife as a sadistic asshole, to be blunt. After the death of his parents (he hid his condition and they went to the grave never knowing what he became), he dismissed his servants to his father’s uncle’s house, took his inheritance, sold his old estate for a sizeable sum, and travelled. He toyed, hurt and killed humans as he pleased.
What he doesn’t know is that his maker was puppeting him from a distance during those three hundred years. He still believes the choices he made during that time were his own. It also took a toll on his mental state even centuries later.
During the mid-1500s (coincidentally, around the same time his maker died) however, he came to the realisation that he didn’t enjoy doing what he was doing. He didn’t enjoy hurting or killing others. He decided to try and use his abilities for good, targeting criminals like murderers or rescuing those who might have needed it. He knew he couldn’t bring back those he had killed or restore the minds he broke when he was still mastering his mesmerism abilities, but he could at least start doing better with his life and do his best not to hurt another person (within reason).
At this time, he changed his surname to Goodwin and went to the United States to settle there, moving from place to place (although he visited other places and went back to England from time to time). Over 300 years later, during the 1850s, he changed his first name to ‘Bill’ (becoming Bill Goodwin) and settled down in Roxbury, Boston, content to stay off blood for the rest of his immortal days and age into an elderly gentleman.
In the year of 1899, one of his neighbours gave birth to a baby boy. After the loss of her other children, this seemed to be a spot of hope for her. However, she had no love for this child. She even refused to give this son a name and was very abusive towards him as he grew older. Bill gave the boy a name and started to help raise him like he was own, growing attached to him like a son. Said boy grew up and a few months after he turned eighteen, was sent out to fight in the first world war. Bill killed and drained the kid’s mother soon after he left, planning to tell him she just died suddenly in her sleep if he came back. Despite Bill’s worries he wouldn’t survive, he was delighted to receive a letter telling him that he would be returning to America in the month of November of 1918.
His surrogate son wasn’t on the ship, much to his dismay. He was informed that he fell off on the way home and he wasn’t found. He suspected foul play and got the truth out of one his son’s friends. He had been caught kissing another man, beaten up and then thrown off the boat. He knew he couldn’t judge anyone for that (“I drink blood to sustain my own life and I’ve had a few different lovers over the years”), let alone the young lad. Hellbent on revenge, he set off to slaughter his surrogate son’s four murderers, even admitting that ‘even though it won’t bring him back, it makes me feel a hell of a lot better’. He drained them of their blood in the process, going from an old man back into his early-to-mid-thirties. He decided to stick to that age this time around.
He later found out his son survived and had washed up on London’s docks. He went there to find him, but much to his grief, he was told he had been killed in a violent brawl with a vampire the night before he arrived. However, he took said vampire down with him in a mutual kill. He wonders if his son possibly reincarnated and could be out there living a new life now.
He continued to travel around, learning new things and trying new stuff to keep himself busy. He still drank blood to sustain himself but he didn’t kill unless it was someone he felt ‘deserved it’. He also kept up with all the changes in technology. He even adapted his speech as needed, keeping up with slang and staying savvy with the times.
He eventually found his way to TFI and after some discussion, became an admin and a supplier for them.
As of now, he’s currently settled in Coldfront as his ‘main’ base of sorts, but he goes elsewhere as needed.

The song in my head.
Idol: Yuju. (Gfriend)
Prompt:  I want to request a Soulmate AU scenario with Yuju (Gfriend). "You can hear your soulmates voice in your head, but only when they sing." make it fluffy pls.
Writer: Admin Kitty.
A/N: I still kept her as an idol even tho this is an au, it just fit my story well. Also I used a couple of different song lyrics as part of this so I’ll list them if you wanna check them out (some of them I wouldn’t listen to but they had words that I needed to use).  Also sorry that I've been like not writing, I just don’t wanna give you anything shitty. Also I think a couple of swears were used. I’m not completely 100% happy with this but I tried really hard.
Frank ocean - thinkin bout you, scouting for girls - still thinking about you, Adele - chasing pavements, Cyndi lauper - time after time, The Tony Williams Lifetime - Where, Lee hyori - Seoul, Jimmy Needham - I will find you, Solarsolar - I can’t find you, Alecia Elliott -  I'm Waiting For You, Many Moore - I see the light.
Tumblr media
Her voice was like a dream. Whenever I hear it it makes me feel tranquil and at peace. She’s so powerful yet so soft, so warm yet so cold, so strong yet I can hear when she’s weak. I want to find her, but I just don’t know how. How can you search for a voice when you can only hear it when she sings. How can I search for a face to match this voice when there are over 7 billion people on this planet.
I wonder how many times she’s heard my voice. I’m not a big singer but sometimes I sing in hopes of entertaining her. Maybe she’d like to hear my voice more, but I guess I’ll never know.
She sings more often than I do. It’s almost as if it’s her job. I thought that if it’s her job she’d be easy to find. I thought wrong.
We sing in two different languages. I can feel the emotion and passion in her voice without knowing her language. It’s as if I know what she’s saying without really knowing.
Many of my friends had already found their soulmates. But it was easier for them as their soulmate lived in the same town as them. Recently I’ve wanted her more than ever, but I’m not sure why. It’s almost as if I’ve began to need her.
I will find her; I don’t care if i have to search every inch of this earth. I won’t end up alone. I refuse to.
I wanted to send her a message, what better way than to sing for her? Well it’s more like my only way to send her a message.. Frank ocean summed me up well right now.
“When I'm thinkin' 'bout you, I been thinkin' 'bout you, I been thinkin' 'bout you, Do you think about me still? Do you, do you? Or do you not think so far ahead? 'Cause I've been thinkin' 'bout forever”
I sung as sweetly as I could in hopes she could hear me and understand me. I forgot to consider the fact that she might not understand English but I can’t sing any other way for her.
I sat there in silence hoping for a reply, wishing and praying.
And then it came.
“I wake up Thinking ‘bout you I go to bed The same thing is true And in between guess what I do? I’m still thinking about you.”
her strong voice replied to me. I never knew she could speak English. I’m glad she thinks about me as much as I think of her.
I was speechless, I wanted to reply but couldn't find lyrics or even my own words.
“Should I give up? Or should I just keep chasin' pavements Even if it leads nowhere?”
I finally sang after some time, hoping she would understand I was talking about her.
“If you're lost, you can look and you will find me Time after time If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting Time after time”
She sung in reply, her melodic voice echoed in my head.
I had to find her; even if it was the last thing I ever did.
I sat in my small dark kitchen spooning cereal into my mouth when she began to sing again.
Her voice rang in my head, the same song over and over again almost like she was rehearsing. I grabbed an envelope that was on my kitchen table and wrote down every sound I heard. To me it didn’t make sense but then again it wasn’t my language.
“Navillera? What does that even mean?” I managed to make out from what I collected. I ran into my bedroom from the kitchen and pulled my laptop out from under my bed. Plopping down onto my bed I opened it up and searched for navillera.
The first result popped up as a music video for gfriend’s navilerra. All the girls in the thumbnail were absolutely beautiful, I just hoped my soulmate was one of them.
I didn’t recognize the first voice or second voice I started to become nervous that she wasn’t in this video. Then the third girl started singing and instantly I recognized her. I paused the video and took in her face.
“This has to be her. I know that voice as if it were my own.” I said out loud, captivated by her beauty.
Her soft brown hair was down in two braids which, along with her fringe, framed her face perfectly. Her milky white skin appeared soft to the touch.
She had stopped singing, only my own thoughts filled your head. I decided to research her group ‘Gfriend’. I learnt they are a South Korean girl group who seem to be quite popular.
“I cannot believe I’m gonna have to travel to Korea. How the fuck am I supposed to find her?”
I racked my brain for an idea, could I just travel there and take my chances? Of course not, there’s too many cities. Should I sing to her? I searched up words that I wanted to say and found a song, it wasn’t much my taste but it got the message across.
“Where are you going                                                                                               where are you from                                                                                                 if anyone asks you                                                                                                   I hope you can say” I sang in a melancholic tone, much like the song.
I waited patiently for her reply. Then it came.
“Seoul, Seoul                                                                                                            Seoul, Seoul.”
“ I will find you, I will find you There ain't no stoppin' me now It's just a matter of how My voice calls, my hands stretch out And well, let me remind you: one day I will find you”
My search for her had come up a bust. Trying to find a famous person in a massive city isn’t as easy as you think. Even if I did find her, how will she know it’s me.
I sat alone in a dark little cafe pondering my options. The sun had gone down so the cafe was empty, most people went out to get drinks or to have dinner at this sort of time.
I sipped my coffee listening to the small TV that was hung in the corner of the room. Some sort of Korean show by the looks of it, most likely a drama by the way it’s filmed. I looked down at my phone and scrolled through my instagram feed, nothing interesting, there almost never is.
The door opened hitting the little bell above it making it ring. I looked up briefly to see a group of girls enter and sit on the opposite side of the cafe. I took no notice and carried on looking at my phone. The silence was broken, the girls chattered loudly at their table. I considered leaving I just wanted to find my soulmate.
‘Maybe I should try and sing to her again.’ I thought to myself, at this point I didn’t have anything to lose.
I sang but as a whisper so it would be difficult for anyone else to hear me.
“I can't find you I can't find you Why can't I find you Do you even want me to?”
I stopped and waited for a reply, the girls from across the room went silent while one of the girls started singing.
“ I've heard your voice,I've felt your touch But only in dreams have I felt this much I've not seen your face,I don't know your name But here in my heart you have a place I'm not for sure, but I believe You're out there waiting for me I'm waiting for you”
Her voice was loud and clear and oh so familiar; I knew that it was her. All her friends and cafe staff started clapping for her, her voice was as amazing as I thought it was. I stood up and walked over to her table.
“You must be Yuju. I’m Y/N.” she stood up and looked me in the eyes. I could feel a spark between us, she knew as much as I did that we were soulmates but I sang for her so she could be sure. I took a deep breath and tried my best to sing, I may not be the best singer but I put in as much effort as I could.
“And at last I see the light And it's like the fog has lifted And at last I see the light...” I stopped in my tracks as Yuju joined me and sang with me.
“ And it's like the sky is new And it's warm and real and bright And the world has somehow shifted All at once everything looks different Now that I see you”
A smile spread wide across her face as she pulled me into a hug. I had finally found her and we were both relieved. Considering we had never met before I felt such a strong bond with her and I just didn’t want to let her go.
And I didn’t plan to.

Chapter 6 – Southern Manhattan Suffers Historic Drop in Average IQ
A three-day weekend. A year ago an enjoyable time for Roger, but now the idea of not going into work for 84 hours, give or take, put everything around him into the slow motion grind of avoidance.
Since his separation, Monday through Friday work served as a distraction. Weekends were another story, but he had the boys every other one, and that made the ones when he did not have Tyler and Max in his John Street apartment, tolerable.
Tip of the Spear, the office, the people, and the projects provided sanctuary for Roger. The routine gave him structure. His coworkers, save for Gary, did not ask him about the separation and kept their conversations relegated to the business of advertising. He worked late many nights, which delayed the return to the empty apartment in southern Manhattan.
****
The agency represented home and family for Roger now. Taking him away from it for a three-day weekend no longer had any appeal.
The actual Fourth of July fell on the Friday of the workweek, and the agency promised the employees that Thursday the 3rdwould be a very short workday. Roger drained every moment out of it he could, and remained at his desk when Gary stopped by at 5pm.
Everyone else left after lunch.
Gary leaned against the doorjamb. He stared at Roger, until he realized that Roger was refusing to acknowledge him.
“Let’s go, Davenport,” he said. “I don’t want to find you in here on Monday morning with three days growth on your face and body odor filling the room.”
Roger forced a weak smile.
“I have my shaving kit with me, and I could always use the shower in the bathroom in your office. I do have all the codes, you know.”
“Is that right?” Asked Gary. “Thanks for reminding me to have them changed once in a while. I’m not good about that.”
Roger exhaled blowing his lips and tongue in a Bronx cheer. Gary laughed and switched off the office lights. The two were out the door; into the elevator; and onto 9thAvenue in two minutes.
A sunny and mild day for July greeted them. Roger shaded his eyes, and slipped his right hand into his briefcase to pull out his sunglasses. He put them on as Gary grabbed his own pair from a side pocket inside his suit jacket.
“I think I could make an excuse,” said Gary. “If you feel a drink would help get you to southern Manhattan in a better frame of mind.”
Roger lifted up his sunglasses and looked at Gary. The two walked the block from 16thto 15thStreet and then over to 8thAvenue.
They halted just in front of the entrance to the subway on the west side of 8thAvenue. Gary was heading uptown. Roger down and across town.
“No thanks,” said Roger. “I’ll take my chances with a very long walk back to John Street. I could certainly use the exercise.”
“Alright, Roger,” said Gary. “I will see you on Tuesday.”
Gary disappeared down the steps. Roger dropped the sunglasses back down on the bridge of his nose and walked to 14thStreet. He was just about to turn left to start his journey in
the cross-town direction, but changed his mind and opted to take Hudson downtown through the old meatpacking district and into a section of Manhattan that showed the effects of capital investment with block after block of retail, newly constructed apartment buildings, and casual restaurants with sidewalk seating.
The usual hustle of humanity on Hudson Street seemed quiet for a pre-Holiday rush hour. No traffic jams. Pedestrian crowds light. That familiar Manhattan crush too many people on too narrow sidewalks had evaporated in a sea of weekend plans.
Roger traversed the distance to and from his apartment to the office often enough to know the route measured just a little longer than two-and-a-half miles and would take him an hour. Maybe longer if he reallytook his time and stopped at a bookstore with no intention of buying a darned thing.
It would be on less hour to kill before the oasis of Monday.
To kill?
***
The Summer in New York City started out with lower than normal temperatures, and little rain. The 4thof July weekend promised to be no different. Roger walked the distance to his apartment and did not break a sweat. He did have to remove his dark grey suit jacket and loosen his red and blue striped tie.
Roger also took off his hat, a throwback matching Fedora.
Old School described many things about Roger, dress being one of them. He liked the Mad Men style, and dressed in plain darkish suits and skinny ties. His taste in clothing ran conservative and the haberdashery trend the TV show started appealed to him immediately.
Roger Davenport presented the very picture of the television series as he strolled down West Broadway with his jacket slung over his shoulder held by only a single finger of his right hand; briefcase and hat in his left; and the collar of his white shirt just the right amount of open.
And for a while his admin, Joan ironically, greeted him with, “Good morning, Mister Draper. Coffee?”
The exchange worked for both of them, since Roger loved the attention and did not drink coffee, so Joan avoided the Old School female errand of fetching coffee for the male boss.
Gary Kaplan stated that Roger became the saddest advertising creative director on Earth, when the show went off the air. To his credit, though, Roger continued to sport the attire.
****
The hour-killing walk ended. Roger entered his building and took the elevator to the tenth floor. He entered his apartment and stripped off the tie, which he draped over the Barcalounger. Roger took in the view from his apartment, which again existed solely of the building across the street.
“Now what?” He said aloud.
To that, he went to the kitchen and poured about four ounces of bourbon into a tumbler. He reached for the freezer to get a couple of ice cubes, but changed his mind.
“Why bother? It only dilutes it,” he said to no one.
Halfway through the four ounces, he opened his briefcase; took out his laptop; and placed it on a box in the kitchen. Roger unpacked the contents of the box, but he since he hadn’t purchased a table yet, he had nowhere to eat his meals, save for the box. And now, it would serve as a desk, another piece of furniture he’d neglected to buy.
He checked his personal email. Just an annoying reminder from Patricia that she and the boys were away for the Fourth of July Holiday weekend. She did not wish him a happy engagement anniversary just as she had not wished him a happy wedding anniversary on Memorial Day. He read a few news feeds (Nothing new on the murder from Memorial Day); and checked the weather (Continued mild for the week).
Boredom and curiosity drove him to open Google Earth. He had not used the application since Memorial Day, the night of the murder.
He opened the application, but immediately closed it and shut off the computer. Roger left the black screen up.
“What are you doing?” He asked. “Besides talking to yourself?”
He switched on the television
“I’ll just channel surf,” he said out loud. “It will at least kill—”
Nothing interested him on any of the channels, so he went to Netflix and downloaded an episode of Mad Men from the first season. Watching it got him to 11pm. Late enough to call it a night.
Roger got ready for bed, but could not fall asleep. His insomnia was getting worse. Around midnight, he kicked back the covers and walked out to the kitchen. The bourbon enticed from the counter, but he turned away from it.
“Maybe I’ll watch Lost Weekend,” he said. “That will push me in one direction or the other.”
Turning from the bourbon bottle his eyes landed on his laptop, still open from earlier in the evening. He turned it on and opened Google Earth.
“Beats talking to myself, or does it?”
He searched for “Bars Open Near Me Now.” When he looked south from Theater Alley, he saw something he did not want to see.
At Liberty Place, south of Theater Alley, the exact same figure in the same position poised to execute another victim. A chill ran through Roger and he shook his head like a dog. He looked again. Still there.
He hit Command-Shift-4; heard the reassuring sound effect of a camera shutter snapping; and waited for a screen capture to appear on his desktop. It did. He emailed it to himself.
Roger double-clicked on it and when it opened, the shadow figure was there; knife positioned overhead; victim and blood underneath. He could get no further detail on the assailant, but the recipient of the stabbing appeared to be another young woman.
Roger shot out of the kitchen and into the living room. He grabbed the land-line and called 911.
“911. What is the nature of your emergency?”
“I, uh, think I’m watching, uh, witnessing a murder!”
“Where is this occurring, sir?”
“Uh, Liberty Place, below - !” He replies.
“I’m familiar with the area. What is your name, sir?” She asks.
“I don’t want to give you my name,” he replies. “Please send someone over there right away. I called several weeks ago when--,” and Roger stopped talking.
“Hold the line, please,” she says.
Roger rocks back and forth on his bare feet. He opens his mouth to say something into the receiver and reaches, once more, for the ‘End’ button. He pulls his hand back.
“It’s the same thing AGAIN! Should I run over there? The police are not going to believe it. They didn’t believe it last time!” He lowered his voice to a whisper when he realized he was getting loud.
“Detective Cooper, homicide.”
The same detective.
“DETECTIVE COOPER! HOMICIDE!”
“At least you yelled all the words this time,” said Roger, with a Peter Lorre laugh at the end of his statement.
“Is this Mike Williams?”
Roger dropped the phone. He picked it up.
“What?” Asked Roger. He fumbled and dropped the phone again. He got to the floor and shouted into the speaker. “Yes. Yes. This is Mike Williams.”
Another pause. Cooper covered the mouthpiece and motion to his partner. Acheson gave the thumbs up that the trace had started from the moment the dispatcher took the call.
“What is it this time, Mister Williams?” Asked Detective Cooper. “Did you see a murder committed on Facebook?”
“What? Uh, no Detective. It’s the same thing. I mean except it’s over on Liberty Place, and this time I have a screen capture.”
“You have a what?” Asked Cooper.
“A screen capture. I can send it to you. Just need an email address.” Roger answered. His voice cracked on the last statement.
“Alright, Mister Williams,” said Cooper. “Why don’t I find out exactly who you send it to. I’ll be right back.”
“You’ll be right back? What does that mean? Detective, there may be a murder going on right now, exactly the same as the one several weeks ago that occurred on Theater Alley!”
Roger heard a faint hum on the phone line, and he banged the received down into its cradle. He checked his pants pockets for his keys, and finding them in his left, bolted out the door and into the elevator. If the police were not going to at least send a patrol car over to Liberty Place, he would run over there now. The location of the Google Earth murder was only two blocks south of his John Street apartment.
The elevator chugged up to his floor and he bounced up and down on his toes as he waited for it. It arrived and he got on.
It stopped on the third floor. Roger exhaled. A young woman stepped inside. Her hair, streaked with lavender. Earbuds implanted above her studded lobes.
The doors opened on the ground floor and Roger shot out into the lobby. He collided with two NYPD policemen. Both officers lightly restrained Roger. The older of them, a
swarthy man of about 45 with a well-trimmed gray mustache tightened his grip. Roger read ‘Stephan Murkowski” on his nameplate over his shirt pocket.
“You Roger Davenport, also known as Mike Williams?” he asked.
Roger stopped what had been a weak struggle. The police had traced his phone call and found out his name; where he lived; and dispatched a patrol car to pick him up.
“I’ll be whoever you like, but I, uh, can you please come down to Liberty Place with me?” He implored. Roger shouted the words at the officers, who blinked in synch.
“We have orders to take you directly to the precinct station, Mister Davenport. Detective Cooper will see you there,” said Officer Murkowski.
His partner, a younger Asian man named Arthur Lee, reached for a pair of handcuffs clipped to his belt. Officer Murkowski waved his hand back and forth.
“We aren’t going to need to cuff you, are we Mister Davenport?” He asked.
“No,” said a contrite Roger. “But I will ask you once more to please drive past Liberty Place. I’m sure it’s on the way to the precinct.”
Lee and Murkowski exchanged a look.
“I think we can do that,” said Murkowski.
“Thank you,” said Roger. “Can we hurry?”
“I don’t think I’ve ever had anyone ask to hurry to the police station, have you Arthur?” Joked Murkowski.
“Nope. It’s a first.” replied Officer Lee.
The policemen and Roger walked out of the building. The officers allowed Roger to place himself in the backseat of the patrol car. They drove south on Gold and, because of the heavy construction blocking vehicular traffic, turned right on Liberty Street. When they arrived at the alley of Liberty Place, the officers hopped out of the car, and made a cursory look around.
Not a person in sight, but had they been two minutes earlier, they might have seen a body being dragged out of the alley and hidden underneath a dumpster that had just been dropped off that afternoon in the area. And if the officers had stayed two minutes longer they might have spotted the trickle of the victim’s blood pooling just outside the dumpster. The next day the body of Nickie Walsh, the 25-year-old Goldman-Sachs intern would be discovered where Ruben had hidden it.
“Sorry, Mister Davenport,” said Officer Lee. “But that alleyway is, uh, dead. There is no one there.”
“Thanks for checking it out,” said a dejected Roger. “You can take your time now.”
Officer Murkowski allowed himself a laugh as Roger slumped in the back seat. He pushed himself further and further into the cushions while they rode to the precinct.

Dodged questions from Facebook’s press call on misinformation
Facebook avoided some of the toughest inquiries from reporters yesterday during a conference call about its efforts to fight election interference and fake news. The company did provide additional transparency on important topics by subjecting itself to intense questioning from a gaggle of its most vocal critics. A few bits of interesting news did emerge:
Facebook’s fact-checking partnerships now extend to 17 countries, up from 14 last month.
Top searches in its new political ads archive include California, Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, Florida, Kavanaugh, North Carolina, and Trump; and its API for researchers will open in August
To give political advertisers a quicker path through its new verification system, Facebook is considering a preliminary location check that would later expire unless they verify their physical mailing address.
Yet deeper questions went unanswered. Will it be transparent about downranking accounts that spread false news? Does it know if the midterm elections are already being attacked? Are politically divisive ads cheaper?

Here’s a selection of the most important snippets from the call, followed by a discussion of how it evaded some critical topics.
Fresh Facts And Perspectives
On Facebook’s approach of downranking instead of deleting fake news:
Tessa Lyons, Product Manager for the News Feed: “If you are who you say you are and you’re not violating our Community Standards, we don’t believe we should stop you from posting on Facebook. This approach means that there will be information posted on Facebook that is false and that many people, myself included, find offensive . . . Just because something is allowed to be on Facebook doesn’t mean it should get distribution . . . We know people don’t want to see false information at the top of their News Feed and we believe we have a responsibility to prevent false information from getting broad distribution. This is why our efforts to fight disinformation are focused on reducing its spread.
–When we take action to reduce the distribution of misinformation in News Feed, what we’re doing changing the signals and predictions that inform the relevance score for each piece of content. Now, what that means is that information, that content appears lower in everyone’s News Feed who might see it, and so fewer people will actually end up encountering it.

–Now, the reason that we strike that balance is because we believe we are working to strike the balance between expression and the safety of our community.
–If a piece of content or an account violates our Community Standards, it’s removed; if a Page repeatedly violates those standards, the Page is removed. On the side of misinformation — not Community Standards — if an individual piece of content is rated false, its distribution is reduced; if a Page or domain repeatedly shares false information, the entire distribution of that Page or domain is reduced.”
On how Facebook disrupts misinformation operations targeting elections:
Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cybersecurity Policy: “For each investigation, we identify particular behaviors that are common across threat actors. And then we work with our product and engineering colleagues as well as everyone else on this call to automate detection of these behaviors and even modify our products to make those behaviors much more difficult. If manual investigations are like looking for a needle in a haystack, our automated work is like shrinking that haystack. It reduces the noise in the search environment which directly stops unsophisticated threats. And it also makes it easier for our manual investigators to corner the more sophisticated bad actors.
In turn, those investigations keep turning up new behaviors which fuels our automated detection and product innovation. Our goal is to create this virtuous circle where we use manual investigations to disrupt sophisticated threats and continually improve our automation and products based on the insights from those investigations. Look for the needle and shrink the haystack.”
TechCrunch/Bryce Durbin
On reactions to political ads labeling, improving the labeling process, and the ads archive:
Rob Leathern, Product Manager for Ads: “On the revenue question, the political ads aren’t a large part of our business from a revenue perspective but we do think it’s very important to be giving people tools so they can understand how these ads are being used
-I do think we have definitely seen some folks have some indigestion about the process of getting authorized. We obviously think it’s an important tradeoff and it’s the right tradeoff to make. We’re definitely exploring ways to reduce the time for them from starting the authorization process to being able to place an ad. We’re considering a preliminary location check that might expire after a certain amount of time, which would then become permanent once they verify their physical mailing address and receive the letter that we send to them.
–We’re actively exploring ways to streamline the authorization process and are clarifying our policy by providing examples on what ad copy would require authorization and a label and what would not.
–We also plan to add more information to the Info and Ads tab for Pages. Today you can see when the Page was created, previous Page names, but over time we hope to add more context for people there in addition to the ads that that Page may have run as well.”
Dodged Questions
On transparency about downranking accounts
Facebook has been repeatedly asked to clarify the lines it draws around content moderation. It’s arrived at a controversial policy where content is allowed even if it spreads fake news, gets downranked in News Feed if fact checkers verify the information is false, and gets deleted if it incites violence or harasses other users. Repeat offenders in the second two categories can get their whole profile, Page, or Group downranked or deleted.
But that surfaces secondary questions about how transparent it is about these decisions and their impacts on the reach of false news. Hannah Kuchler of The Financial Times and Sheera Frenkel of The New York Times pushed Facebook on this topic. Specifically, the latter asked “I was wondering if you have any intention going forward to be transparent about who is going — who is down-ranked and are you keeping track of the effect that down-ranking a Page or a person in the News Feed has and do you have those kinds of internal metrics? And then is that also something that you’ll eventually make public?”
Facebook has said that if a post is fact-checked as false, it’s downranked and loses 80% of its future views through News Feed. But that ignores the fact that it can take three days for fact checkers to get to some fake news stories, so they’ve likely already received the majority of their distribution. It’s yet to explain how a false rating from fact checkers reduces the story’s total views before and after the decision, or what the ongoing reach reduction is for accounts that are downranked as a whole for repeatedly sharing false rated news.
Lyons only answered regarding what happens to individual posts rather than providing the requested information about the impact on downranked accounts:
Lyons: “If you’re asking specifically will we be transparent about the impact of fact-checking on demotions, we are already transparent about the rating that fact-checkers provide . . . In terms of how we notify Pages when they share information that’s false, any time any Page or individual shares a link that has been rated false by fact-checkers, if we already have a false rating we warn them before they share, and if we get a false rating after they share, we send them a notification. We are constantly transparent, particularly with Page admins, but also with anybody who shares information about the way in which fact-checkers have evaluated their content.”
On whether politically divisive ads are cheaper and more effective
A persistent question about Facebook’s ads auction is if it preferences inflammatory political ads over neutral ones. The auction system is designed to prioritize more engaging ads because they’re less likely to push users off the social network than boring ads, thereby reducing future ad views. The concern is that Facebook may be incentivizing political candidates and bad actors trying to interfere with elections to polarize society by making ads that stoke divisions more efficient.
Deepa Seetharaman of the The Wall Street Journal surfaced this on the call saying “I’m talking to a lot of campaign strategists coming up to the 2018 election. One theme that I continuously hear is that the more incendiary ads, do better but the effective CPMs on those particular ads are lower than, I guess, neutral or more positive messaging. Is that a dynamic that you guys are comfortable with? And is there anything that you’re doing to kind of change the kind of ads that succeeds through the Facebook ad auction system?”
Facebook’s Leathern used a similar defense Facebook has relied on to challenge questions about whether Donald Trump got cheaper ad rates during the 2016 election, claiming it was too hard to assess that given all the factors that go into determining ad prices and reach. Meanwhile, he ignored whether, regardless of the data, Facebook wanted to make changes to ensure divisive ads didn’t get preference.
Leathern: “Look, I think that it’s difficult to take a very specific slice of a single ad and use it to draw a broad inference which is one of the reasons why we think it’s important in the spirit of the transparency here to continue to offer additional transparency and give academics, journalists, experts, the ability to analyze this data across a whole bunch of ads. That’s why we’re launching the API and we’re going to be starting to test it next month. We do believe it’s important to give people the ability to take a look at this data more broadly. That, I think, is the key here — the transparency and understanding of this when seen broadly will give us a fuller picture of what is going on.”
On if there’s evidence of midterm elections interference
Facebook failed to adequately protect the 2016 US presidential election from Russian interference. Since then it’s taken a lot of steps to try to safeguard its social network, from hiring more moderators to political advertiser verification systems to artificial intelligence for fighting fake news and the fake accounts that share it.
Internal debates about approaches to the issue and a reorganization of Facebook’s security teams contributed Facebook CSO Alex Stamos’ decision to leave the company next month. Yesterday, BuzzFeed’s Ryan Mac and Charlie Warzel  published an internal memo by Stamos from March urging Facebook to change. “We need to build a user experience that conveys honesty and respect, not one optimized to get people to click yes to giving us more access . . . We need to listen to people (including internally) when they tell us a feature is creepy or point out a negative impact we are having in the world.” And today, Facebook’s Chief Legal Officer Colin Stretch announced his departure.
Faceboook efforts to stop interference aren’t likely to have completely deterred those seeking to sway or discredit our elections, though. Evidence of Facebook-based attacks on the midterms could fuel calls for government regulation, investments in counter-cyberwarfare, and Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s role.
WASHINGTON, DC – APRIL 11: Facebook co-founder, Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg prepares to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill April 11, 2018 in Washington, DC. This is the second day of testimony before Congress by Zuckerberg, 33, after it was reported that 87 million Facebook users had their personal information harvested by Cambridge Analytica, a British political consulting firm linked to the Trump campaign. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)
David McCabe of Axios and Cecilia Kang of The New York Times pushed Facebook to be clear about whether it had already found evidence of interference into the midterms. But Facebook’s Gleicher refused to specify. While it’s reasonable that he didn’t want to jeopardize Facebook or Mueller’s investigation, it’s something that Facebook should at least ask the government if it can disclose.
Gleicher: “When we find things and as we find things — and we expect that we will — we’re going to notify law enforcement and we’re going to notify the public where we can . . . And one of the things we have to be really careful with here is that as we think about how we answer these questions, we need to be careful that we aren’t compromising investigations that we might be running or investigations the government might be running.”
The Answers We Need
So Facebook, what’s the impact of a false rating from fact checkers on a story’s total views before and after its checked? Will you reveal when whole accounts are downranked and what the impact is on their future reach? Do politically incendiary ads that further polarize society cost less and perform better than politically neutral ads, and if so, will Facebook do anything to change that? And does Facebook already have evidence that the Russians or anyone else are interfering with the U.S. midterm elections?
We’ll see if any of the analysts who get to ask questions on today’s Facebook earnings call will step up.
