James Potter, Chosen One, is a closed circuit. He doesn’t need love to function. They can hate him forever, if it makes them feel better. He only wishes that he could understand what he did to deserve it.

Sirius—Sirius he understands. That anger is simple; they hate him for sacrificing one of their own, for leaving Sirius behind. For plotting without them, for keeping it secret, for risking a life that is not his own. James knew from the start that they would be furious. That they might not forgive him.
