Before & After Home Renovation with Pictures
Designed by Suzanne Bolling of Restyle Design, LLC, this home was a complete renovation! The interior designer took it down to the studs and redesigned the space for this young family. They opened up the main floor to create a large kitchen with two islands and seating for a crowd and a dining nook that looks out to the beautiful front yard. They also created two seating areas, one for TV viewing and one for relaxing in front of the bar area, and added a new mudroom with lots of closed storage cabinets, a pantry with a sliding barn door and a powder room for guests.
This home went from outdated and dark to funky and young. Although the entire home mostly features a white and grey color scheme, pops of tangerine brings a sense of happiness to this home. By the way, tangerine will be the color of 2019!
Feel free to pin your favorite “Before and After” transformations. I did a few collages so you guys would see how this home used to look before the renovation. These are always fun to look at, right?

My first build for my new project #wannaliveinthe50s
Newly built in Butler Greens (formerly Newcrest), the Modette is a two bedroom, one bathroom home with fully updated plumbing and modern appliances, as well as a finished basement! This home also features two fireplaces to cozy up to on chilly nights and an open patio in the backyard for your summer party pleasures.
There is a bit more CC in this home than I had hoped, because I didn’t want this to be a huge problem for those of you who don’t want the CC in your game. If you’re patient, though (unlike myself) eventually I will upload a CC free version. It just probably won’t be entirely furnished.....
BUT, for those of you who are CC junkies like myself (Come on! Admit it!!), and can’t live without it, here is the list!
If you upload it, I haven’t play tested it, but I am pretty sure most every thing will work properly. Also, I used move objects on, so make sure to have it on before placing the lot to make sure all the little things are where they are supposed to be.
*****OMG SORRY!!! It’s a long list!!!!*****

I didn’t know the siding etc was CC (shame, shame). I decided to go ahead and make a CC free version and loaded it in to my working neighborhood and the siding is gone. So, I believe it is Peacemakers siding (both clapboard and board & baton...I hope). I will fix this once I reload my game with CC to make sure.
PLUS!!
The interior doorways and arches are Peacemakers as well, but I’m not one hundred percent.
And I will have a look for the smaller windows....
And the vanity table in the master bedroom....
Sorry!! *ugh, I’m crying*

20 Recliner Chairs in Contemporary Living Rooms
Ever thought of getting a recliner chair to your Dad? On The Grounds That I Was a little kid, I all the time saw motion pictures by which the dad has this huge, black or brown top back accessory chair or recliner chair the place he sits on whenever he watches TELEVISION with the family within the front room. Considering That then, i thought, dads should have separate chairs from all of the family. Do you think that this manner too? What’s great concerning the furnishings industry at the moment is that folks should purchase a single piece of furnishings or a chair for that matter. i'll remember that a time where you will have to shop for a complete set to your living room, your eating room or in your garden. All this have changed as time passed and as our layout trade has stepped forward. in case you may just relate to what I’m pronouncing, pass in advance and take a look at this thread and share them along with your family and friends!
Picture: http://www.decoratorsunlimited.com/contemporary.html The brown recliner chair at the top left of this front room is one way or the other similar to that of the chair you take a seat on should you visit your dentist excluding that it is no longer in white! This house is a pleasing representation of a masculine area – all colors used within the room don't seem to be those that most ladies would prefer, however the neutrality of this space is rather inviting and neat.
Photograph: https://harrell-remodeling.com/design-construct/tasks/whole-house/ Seen on this seating space, that is dominated most commonly by browns, oranges, and beige is a pair of recliner chairs with a footrest. i believe this house is made prettier through the giraffe noticed behind considered one of the recliner chairs.
Photograph: http://www.webberstudio.com/currentdirection/nuevo.html that is one eclectic lounge where we will be able to see different designs of chairs and sofas that were combined and matched in combination to create a undeniable really feel to it. that is what I Was telling you approximately shopping for furniture that is not necessarily performed in units. one way like this one, which is mixing and matching furnishings, is noticed more in restaurants or cafes.
Photo: https://www.statkusarchitecture.com.au/east-brunswick-i The crisp and neat glance of this living room is attributed to the truth that this area is in a mostly black, brown and cream. i like the reality that this area is minimalistic and nice for young adults or for a beginning family.
Photo: http://www.haganarchitects.com This creative space is a haven for individuals who simply wish to chill and relax after an entire day at work or in school. the colors observed in the paintings and color possible choices for the furniture and decors is sleek and actual classy.
Photo: https://www.cantoni.com/topic/herson-undertaking.do#.U9FYKlbnDd4 a lovely amount of contrast is observed on this beautiful lounge. i personally just like the sectional with a blank facet on one finish and a rounded one on the other. The cream recliner chairs at the different facet of the room by some means resemble those massage chairs you'll be able to regularly see in buying groceries shops.
Photo: http://www.dcarch.com/paintings/possum-trot a swish and vintage dwelling space with black furniture and contrasting carpet and pillow colours makes this area a contemporary haven for convenience and rest. i love the truth that they used a pair of recliner chairs to compliment the sectional that they selected for this space – it feels like they actually blend together smartly.
Photo: http://vivendi.com.au/venture/dampier here is the popular example of a mid-century recliner chair that you can see so much on this checklist. this actual design is a standard selection because of how obtainable and to be had it is in the marketplace. should you understand, the designs of recliner chairs in the market aren't that many.
Photo: http://www.plarch.com/index.cfm/tasks/millennium-tower here's a similar recliner chair from quantity 8 on this listing. it's in white, but principally the similar factor! in this area, as a result of the color of the walls and the contrast it has with the color of the couch, it makes it a great choice than the brown or black one.
Picture: http://www.jaureguiarchitect.com/challenge/texas-chic The design of this recliner chair is very cumbersome. I’m lovely positive that it's comfortable and soft to take a seat on. The purpose of creating this space as at ease may be very much achieved – enough seating house, a game table, TELEVISION and one massive window that permits you to look the outdoors.
Picture: Putragraphy An instance of a sophisticated and stylish residing space you might need to be in each day – striking out together with your circle of relatives and buddies and just talking and ingesting all day. The pieces of furniture observed in listed below are fairly neat and great possible choices in attaining an advanced having a look dwelling house. With a view like that, it is just smart that the fashion designer in truth created a submit to post window!
Picture: https://www.hanseninteriors.com this is another beautiful front room with a twin recliner chair that absolutely matches the colour of the sectional and that of the carpet! As a lot as such a lot of the furniture and decor in here is in grey, beige or white, including vegetables right here and there made a complete lot of distinction to the look and really feel of this excellent Mount Pleasant house.
Photo: https://harrell-remodeling.com/layout-construct/initiatives/entire-house/ Look At the cumbersome couch and recliner chair chose for this San Francisco house! Since The lounge is small and possibly the folks living in this home is simply a couple of, they selected few however greater furnishings; but looking at this furniture, you can obviously see that they're soft and really comfortable to sit down on.
Photo: http://decurtisdesign.com What a stupendous white recliner chair! This Northumberland home shows us the best way to embellish a small dwelling space with enough seating, ornament, and function! despite the fact that a few living areas don't essentially upload a TV, this space positive introduced one and strategically positioned the sectional for the folks to have the option to enjoy the tv.
Photograph: http://www.twinkleandwhistle.com Twinkle and Whistle sure makes we need to provide them a call and ask them where they were given the furnishings and decors in this adorable dwelling space. Even Supposing a space this white would someway be a risk to someone’s well being, this certain looks really nice to live in.
Photo: hanseninteriors.com Now, this is one lounge through which a furniture set used to be used to embellish the entire house. From the fabric and appears of it, the couches and the recliner chair, and even the coffee desk looks like it got here with them! the color combination of this front room positive is manly but nonetheless informal and really comfortable.
Picture: http://www.davidchurchill.co.uk/residing this pretty white recliner chair sure stands out in this heat room! all the reds, oranges and browns in right here make this white recliner chair a real conversational piece! i'm undecided about you men, but i feel, I won’t use this recliner chair simply because I’d be afraid to get it dirty.
Picture: https://www.jacksondesignandremodeling.com/customized-properties This pair of recliner chairs sure is a lovely space for seating and studying. Facing a fireplace pit, those recliner chairs look in point of fact captivating. if you could realize, this house is in fact in reality large and adding hundreds seating is key particularly while you might have a whole lot individuals who come over a lot!
Picture: http://www.atelierdrome.com/bellevuemodernfarmhouse This space in the house certain seems like a movie space. i'm no longer fairly positive why this isn't an enclosed space, but i believe including recliner chairs for a film house is the best selection in case you in point of fact need to have the perfect environment for rest and rest.
Photo: http://corbinreevesconstruction.com This last front room that now we have in this list is a bit of modern but in reality masculine. I just like the velvety finish of the couch and the recliner chairs and the truth that they matched it with orange throws. All in all, i believe that this record is greater than simply the recliner chairs that had been delivered to the areas – it's more of the story as to who could be the use of those chairs at the same time as they are at house! it's lovely exciting to assume that the dwelling rooms with recliner chairs would be used by the parents within the house and if it is just a lone recliner chair, it might almost certainly be used by the daddy. when you wish to take a look at more living spaces, take a look at the 20 Impartial Toned Leather Furnishings and pick the best leather-based furnishings for your properties! Interior Home Decoration
Consider this—you’ve just bought a new home, signed a lease on a new apartment, or moved to a new city. You fell in love with the space that will become your new home, but when you think about decorating it from scratch, you get overwhelmed with options and decisions. Which paint colour should I choose? Should I get a sectional or three-seater sofa? What size rug do I need? At a glance, a blank decorating slate can feel intimidating, but with a project-managing approach to interior decorating, you’ll find that decisions are much more easily interior home made. As Interior designer, we know this all too well—when juggling dozens of clients and project, how we approach to decorating is less akin to intuition and closer to a top-level project management method, complete with plans, spreadsheets, and actionable to-do lists. By breaking down each aspect of interior decorating, we can track your progress and keep a décor plan on schedule and on budget. Better yet, we can easily ensure that whichever individual piece you choose will work within the overall scheme of the room or even the home. So how do you decorate a room from start to finish using a project management approach? We outline the 12 steps that will get you from blank slate to beautiful space—and how to tackle it in just one weekend. 1. Get inspired The first step to decorating is to know where you’re going—and in order to do this, you need to have a plan. Start with gathering inspiration: interior images, furniture you love, textures, and materials. Group everything into a folder or Pinterest board to keep a clear and coherent vision in one space. Your deliverable: An inspiration board filled with your favourite rooms, furniture pieces, colours, and materials. 2. Find the common threads Once you have all your inspiration in one place, find the common threads. Do you have a penchant for marble, minimal designs, the colour blue? Identify which items are catching your eye, and use these pieces, colours, textures, and materials as a base for your design plan. The goal isn’t to go overboard with any of them, but to create a coherent base and style for your space. Your deliverable: A boiled-down palette of colors, materials, and textures to help you guide future decisions. 3. Take inventory Once you’ve nailed down your aesthetic, take inventory of what you already own and decide whether each piece has a place in your new home. Can you find a spot for your favourite art? Does your grandmother’s antique buffet fit with your minimal scheme? Remember—mixing periods and styles can add to your décor, but only you can judge whether each individual piece will add cachet or clash with your overall look. Your deliverable: A list of everything you’ll keep, sell, give, or donate—with actionable plans for each. 4. Identify your core needs You may love small mid-century settees, but is it practical for your lifestyle? Identify your core needs so you don’t end up with a design that’s pretty but impractical. Consider how many people you want to seat in your living room or at your dining table; what type of activities take place in your home: Do you love playing board games, throwing cocktail parties, napping on the sofa, or watching Netflix marathons? Let your lifestyle guide your floor plan. Should your sofa face the TV, the fireplace, or a pair of lounge chairs? Should it sit in the middle of the room or by a sunlit window? How big should it be? These are all questions you’ll need to have answers to before picking furniture. Your deliverable: A core list of activities that take place in your home and the requirements that accompany them (e.g., a desk for working from home or a table to play board games). 5. Digest your overall plan You’ve had time to digest your overall plan and aesthetic for the space, now it’s time to take concrete action. Make a list of every single piece of furniture you want. Consider side tables, sofas, lounge chairs, entryway consoles, and bar cabinets. Now is not the time to restrain yourself with budgets or measurements—let yourself dream up your ultimate wish list regardless of what actually makes sense. Have you always wanted a chaise longue? Maybe you’d like a vanity to get ready in the morning? Write it all down. Your deliverable: An ultimate wish list of everything you want in your space, regardless of space or budget. 6. Floor Plan Now that you know your needs and wants, it’s time to place these items in a floor plan to see which ones make the cut. Use a paper and pen or an app to make a floor plan to scale, and start dropping furniture pieces in. Again, don’t limit yourself with budget—consider only spatial requirements. As a guide, leave three feet of walking space in high traffic areas and one to two feet between sofas and tables. Your deliverable: A floor plan (or a few floor plan options) depicting how you want your space to flow, complete with all the furniture you’ll need. 7. Lighting Once you have a furniture plan, use the same floor plan to map out your lighting. Consider all sources of light: pendants, flush mounts, recessed, sconces, table or floor lamps—but be mindful of which types of lighting require an electrician and which ones don’t. Add floor lamps near lounge chairs and sofas, and table lamps on side tables, buffets, and consoles. At the very least, every room should have three sources of lighting at eye level, positioned around the room in a triangular shape. Your deliverable: Your furniture plan completes with a lighting map—and a list of your lighting needs. 8. Cost Estimation Now that you have a clear idea of what you need and where you need it, it’s time to start assigning dollar figures. To do this, input your furniture list into a spreadsheet with a total budget amount at the bottom—pick a figure you’re comfortable with and that seems reasonable with the number of things you have to buy. Then, start assigning numbers to each item according to how much you think it costs or how much you feel comfortable spending on each. Play with the amounts until you arrive at a total that’s under your planned total. Remember to budget at least 20% for unplanned issues, taxes, delivery, and other fees. Your deliverable: A detailed budget plan to guide you through the purchasing phase. 9. Start Shopping Now comes the fun part: Start shopping for pieces you love, starting with the biggest ones. It’s easier to place smaller items in afterward than the other way around. Don’t forget rugs, which will need to go in first. As you narrow down on each piece, add their price to your budget spreadsheet. If you go over, try making substitutions until you reach a budget you’re comfortable with. Most items and styles are available at a variety or price points, so don’t be afraid to visit budget retailers to see if you can find a similar item at a better price. Your deliverable: A detailed shopping list outlining each piece of furniture you need to purchase. Don’t forget to measure everything twice before confirming your order. 10. Comparing and Choosing Chances are that during your furniture sourcing, you came across items you absolutely loved but that didn’t fit your budget, but that doesn’t mean you should cross them off forever. Keep these pieces aside and see if you could purchase them down the line or if the splurge is worth it. After all, one investment piece can elevate the furniture of a whole room, if chosen carefully. The types of pieces you may want to splurge on are unique statement pieces that will make a big impact on your overall design, or timeless larger items like sofas that you can see yourself keeping for decades. Your deliverable: A short list of a couples of splurge items to consider investing in for the long run. 11.Colours and painting You may think that the best time to pick a paint colour is at the beginning, but we prefer choosing it at the end. Why? It’s easier to pick a tone to complement your entire furniture collection than the other way around. Pick paint samples and look at them against the furniture you’ve chosen until you find the perfect match. Examine them against fabric or material samples to make sure that everything works together. If you can, get sample pots and paint one-foot squares on your wall to look at under different lights throughout the day. Each paint will look radically different under natural light than it does on a paint chip. Your deliverable: A painting plan complete with colours and paint finishes. 12. Add in Accessories Lastly, add in accessories in your space as you create layers that will make it feel lived in. A mistake people often make is to purchase a ton of small accessories instead of the big pieces first because they’re afraid of committing to a design scheme. By picking the bigger items first, you’ll avoid ending up with a ton of small accessories that don’t work together. When picking accessories, consider art for the walls, storage like baskets and trays, coffee table books, coasters, vases, and anything else that might enhance your space while still keeping it livable and practical. Repeat the same steps 8 through 10 to budget your accessories. Your deliverable: An accessories plan to add finishing touches to your décor and, at the end, a beautiful home you’ll look forward to coming home to.

Piet Mondrian Inspired Interior Design To Give Your Home The De Stijl Flair
To appreciate the Mondrian look, let’s take a look at the De Stijl artistic movement: Dutch for “The Style” (aka Neoplasticism, “the new plastic art”) the Dutch body of work spans from 1917 to 1931. Strictly speaking, De Stijl works within constraints of only primary colours and non-colours, vertical and horizontal line compositions and strong asymmetricality to achieve pure abstraction. Though painter Piet Mondrian is perhaps most popularly known, the group was rich with artists and architects. The works of De Stijl went on to influence the Bauhaus style and cubism in interior design. Here, we’re featuring four homes that pay homage to the Mondrian style, plus a selection of other inspirational rooms decorated in the theme.
Visualizer: Daria Zinovatnaya Straight horizontal and vertical lines, plus square and rectangular forms were key in the De Stijl movement, however curved lines were not completely unseen. This lounge decor presents a beautiful balance between the two by accentuating an arched doorway in primary colour paint–an easy way to bring a little Mondrian flavour into your scheme. More contrasting curves are introduced through coffee tables, chairs and abstract pattern in the rug.
An area of ‘non-colour’ is fashioned as a panel of black and white diagonal stripes over a compact one-wall kitchen. The black and white feature wall is accessorised with a black swing arm wall lamp. A circular chandelier adorns the centre of the room.
Another curvaceous light is suspended over the dining combination of mismatched chairs. At first glance, the dining table appears to be impossibly balanced on the point of a triangular leg formation, however, the other side of the table reveals a support. The De Stijl works always avoided symmetry, and instead found aesthetic balance by use of opposition. This embodies the second meaning of ‘stijl’ that is “a post, jamb or support”. The rectangle of tile below the table makes a practical cubist flourish that’s easy to mimic.
A partially dividing wall sections an ensuite bathroom from the master bedroom. The half height wall is topped with cubist framing holding panes of obscured glass. You could commision one of these for any space with the help of a capable carpenter or metalworker.
The opposite side of the cubist dividing wall acts as a headboard feature wall for a double bed. Again the bold colours of the room are balanced out by a black and white feature piece, this time in the form of a monochrome bedroom armchair.
Floating rectangular bedside units are reminiscent of the De Stijl group’s three-dimensional works where vertical and horizontal lines are positioned in layers or planes that do not intersect, allowing elements to exist independently and unobstructed.
When implementing a Mondrian inspired interior design, always keep neighbouring colours in high contrast, and intersperse with black, white and grey.
Visualizer: Elena Oberemok In our second home interior of the Piet Mondrian style, a children’s’ room follows the primary colour rule more rigidly. Primary colours have always worked well in kids’ rooms due to their simplistic nature and high energy look.
The modern workspace in the room is a graphic and crisp interpretation of Mondrian paintings, with black lines forming intersections for colour fills and negative space. The cubist style is easily translatable into work areas that include storage: Simply install black unit carcasses, worktop and shelving, then select cupboard doors in red, blue, yellow and white colourways.
Finish the look with a primary colour chair.
Designer: DARgroup Visualizer: Notoo Studio In our third home with De Stijl flair, timber battens have been applied to interior walls to divide into eye-catching cubist sections. The battens have been painted in red, and mounted on blue and white walls; black framing in this style would give a cool monochrome look that could also be filled in with intermittent sections of colour. In this instance, black notes come into the scheme via a 4 poster bed and matching black side table.
In some areas of this home, the red framing stands independently of the walls in a 3D effect. The dining space is like a living Mondrian painting, with objects reduced to their simplest form.
Mondrian wrote, “this new plastic idea will ignore the particulars of appearance, that is to say, natural form and colour. On the contrary, it should find its expression in the abstraction of form and colour, that is to say, in the straight line and the clearly defined primary colour”.
Visualizer: DAR group Our last cubist home interior is located in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, and contains perhaps the most adaptable ideas of the four.
A simple black display shelf is backed in the instantly recognisable primary colours of Neoplasticism. The adjacent kitchen is bold in colour and contains black framed wall units.
A special installation of shelving has been fashioned as volumes suspended from a ceiling support. The cubes hold a selection of indoor plants and glassware above a breakfast bar. Over in the lounge, a circular large wall clock contrasts with the straight lines. De Stijl was a collective of ideas. Here are some more artistic ideas collected by us to help inspire Mondrian home style in all different kinds of rooms…
Source: Joy Me This is a luxury yacht interior that uses relatively minor touches to create a big impact. One yellow bed, a cubist pattern rug and a few black lines on the walls with a single blue section is all it took to create this stand out scheme.
Source: Bravacasa This double bedroom features a Mondrian style headboard wall and bedroom rug to complete the look. The black border around the duvet cover and pillowcases makes a perfect accompaniment. The same effect could be created by sewing your own black trim onto a plain white bed set.
Source: Villa Mondrian If you’re not sure about committing fully to a Mondrian medley, then you can still enjoy the cubist aesthetic with a smaller panel above the headboard, and simply dress your bed with a primary colour bed throw over a basic white duvet. Accessorise with a contrasting square cushion. This bedroom has the added benefit of existing black framed windows and doors to tie in with the look.
A Mondrian headboard decal is a quick way to bring the theme into a bedroom. Alternatively, a fabric cubist headboard can be created with squares and rectangles of primary colour stitched onto a white base. Finish with lengths of black trim.
Designer: KNQ Associates This bedroom explores the relationship between positive and negative elements in an arrangement, using a cool extruded ceiling design and wall units. Recessed LED strip lights highlight the edges.
Designer: Suzy Harris This scheme encompasses both a headboard wall and a work desk area. A blue window blind, yellow desk chair and blue and yellow bedding complete the effect.
The “plastic vision” of De Stijl as tv wall decor.
Designer: Alloy Workshop Square and mosaic bathroom tiles adapt easily to the cubist style.
Source: Delcon USA You could cover the whole bathroom or pick just one focal point.

Mandi’s Fireplace and Media Center Makeover
Last June, I moved into a basic suburban home straight out of your favorite ’80s teen movie in every way. Okay, so someone did us the favor of removing tired wallpaper and painting everything tan and brown. But we loved how much the peculiar floor plan exactly fit our particular needs, and I was really taken with this grand living room. It didn’t exactly look like a grand space when we moved in, but I saw its potential for the fireplace of my dreams, and was enamored with the tall ceilings complete with skylights and weird sofit-clad nooks on the walls. (You can see the plan of our first floor in this blog post.)
The living room has finally undergone its transformation, and I’m so excited to share the process with you! We now have a bright space with a beautiful stone fireplace that accentuates the high ceilings. Below the fireplace is a long hearth, worthy of any mid-century masterpiece, but still fitting in with our ’80s home. We aren’t shy about the fact that we watch TV, and I decided to show it in all its glory, since this is the family room in our home and hey, our family likes movie nights, and sometimes movie days!
When I first drew out the plans for the fireplace wall makeover, I had planned to build shelves above the TV, as well as the shelf you can see below it. I wanted to wait until our TV was installed to see how the space would feel, and was surprised that I felt it was perfect without shelves above the TV. Maybe that will change someday, but we are building a shelving wall in our study, so I can’t imagine that we would need any more book storage. I do like how minimal it feels, allowing other areas of the room to shine, like the gorgeous stone fireplace!
From the moment I first saw this space, I knew it needed a stone fireplace that went all the way up to the ceiling. Since there was already brick in place, we opted to use a stone veneer, rather than demo the brick or waste square footage by using large stones. In fact, after doing quite a bit of research, I settled on using manufactured stone, called Cultured Stone by Boral. It looks like real stone, but it is 1/4 of the weight of full-thickness stone, and since it is a veneer, it is not as thick either. You can purchase corner pieces to achieve the look of a thick fireplace, but since our plan was to do some drywall work next to the stone, we didn’t end up using corner pieces. I selected the Old Country Fieldstone in the Summit Peak colorway, and used a sanded grout with a wide mortar set. I was thinking I’d like to use an overgrout style, but my husband vetoed me and we met halfway. Check out the dramatic before and after below!
Above is a cellphone picture of me in my excitement after the first day of Boral stone installation. I had considered doing this project myself, and know that I could’ve (hear me roar). But since we were taking on so much work elsewhere in our home, I decided to hire someone to do the work, and I’m so glad we did! My friend Jeremy Miller did a great job. He added a moisture barrier and metal lathe to the drywall section of the wall above the old brick fireplace, and then covered everything with a coat of mortar. It took him two days to place the stone and fill it in with sanded grout. We chose a white grout, which when mixed with the sand makes an off-white color. I liked the contrast and also wanted it to tie in with the hearth and walls around it.
But let’s take a step back to when we first got the keys to our house! I had made all of the plans for the space while waiting for our mortgage to close, so I confidently began demo in the living room on the very first day of homeownership! Out came the carpet and baseboards, down came the mantle, and out came the old cabinets. I had originally planned to remove the platform inside of this media center nook, but when I pulled up the carpet, I saw that the platform beneath was actually the subfloor that went under the walls, not a platform that was built onto the subfloor. Then I pulled up the subfloor to discover plumbing pipes, electrical conduits, and vacuflo tubes going through the space. My plan was foiled! The platform had to stay. After an afternoon of frustration with The Platform That Came To Stay, I came up with a plan B I liked even better than plan A! I decided to embrace the platform and build it out on the front to meet the depth of the hearth. I decided to create a mid-century style hearth that extended all the way from one wall to the other, to be covered in concrete for a sleek, minimal look that would tie in with the floors and walls, allowing the Boral stone fireplace to take center stage. (More like stage left, but you get the idea …)
After we built out the platform, we covered it with sheets of Wonderboard that we screwed into place with Rock-On screws, and then I prepped the area for a couple of coats of Ardex Feather Finish in white. Prepping simply involved putting fiberglass joint tape between boards and where the Wonderboard met the brick of the fireplace. This step prevents the concrete feather finish from cracking as the structure shifts with house settling and temperature/humidity changes that affect the wood structure below it.
Ardex feather finish is a material typically used as a floor leveler or to repair subfloors before laying the finished flooring material. But it’s become a trendy finish for countertop refinishing and other home DIY projects with a modern flair. The technique I used on the hearth is actually the same process that was used in the old ABM studio house countertops to cover the formica countertops. On the left side of the fireplace, I was smoothing the Ardex over Wonderboard. On the right side, I was smooshing it into the spaces of the brick.
Ardex is a lot of trial and error, but I learned to only work with small batches at a time, because it sets up quickly and becomes very difficult to smooth out. After about 30 minutes, I went back and scraped off any majorly uneven areas, such as the globbyness around the front ledge of the hearth. I absolutely couldn’t get photos of this because I was working along and also working against the clock with the Ardex.
White Ardex is very difficult to find in my experience, but you can order it some places online. I would try calling around in your area to see if you can buy it locally to save on shipping costs. I didn’t have any luck here in Canton, Ohio.
Now for the nook where this very ’80s midwestern media cabinet used to reside. Of course, some of us older folks remember when TVs used to be monstrosities. In fact, until I graduated high school, my family had one of those huge cabinet televisions that was an actual piece of furniture with a dial on the front. A DIAL. When I designed the new space for our flat-screen TV, I knew I wouldn’t need the depth required for an older television, but ironically, I wanted enough room for my turntable and receiver. So my dad (who has done all of my drywall work for me—thanks, Dad!) moved forward the back wall so I had just enough space to build a shelf for my vintage record equipment and a shelf for my speakers and albums.
After the drywalling was complete, I built supports for the chunky nook-style shelving using 2x3s, as shown below. I attached the supports to the rear wall and side walls after making sure there was enough room to comfortably fit my records, and of course making sure the shelf support was level. After the supports were anchored into the wall, I attached the front 2×3 and covered the supports with 1/4″ plywood. I planned out the support size so that the 1/4″ plywood would make the front of the shelves flush with the drywall around it. After nailing on the plywood, I did a lot of sanding to compensate for any unevenness in the plywood, then I primed, wet sanded, and painted the shelves to match the walls.
I had planned to take more process photos of the shelf-building when I built the upper shelves, but since I decided not to do upper shelves, I don’t have as many photos as I would’ve like to have shared. Feel free to ask me any questions about this process in the comments at the end of this post!
Because we will be using a 2″ sound bar mounted to our TV (situated at the bottom of the TV) and a wireless subwoofer, I decided to keep my record player on its own speaker system. I actually bought “new” vintage speakers that perfectly fit in with my record shelf, and have drilled holes in my shelf to connect all of the wires out of site. Also, since we built the wall that the TV and shelves are on, I added electrical outlets behind my turntable and receiver, as well as behind the television. And when I said I added, I mean Dad added. (Thanks again, Dad!)
So there she is! I finished up the hearth just in time to decorate for Christmas. I’ll be sharing more of the before and after of this space very soon! Check out the list below to find out where everything is from, and stay tuned for the full reveal! – Mandi

Do you ever look at pictures in magazines and wonder if people’s homes actually look like that?
It takes some time and dedication, but it’s totally possible. Detroit-area photographer Erin Hannum and her family live in one such home. It’s bright and minimal with some midcentury modern touches.
Take a look at how they were able to design their space to suit their taste and how you can get the look in your home.
Q: I absolutely love your home! How would you describe its style?
A: My home’s style is pretty minimal, but with some of our weird personalities thrown in. I try not to have stuff all over the surfaces, but I also really like having fun little vintage things – like the brass candlesticks, for instance.
Q: Yeah, the little touches definitely make it feel homey. What’s your favorite detail?
A: My favorite piece of decor is my embroidered Ron Swanson. I’m not sure if Ron would really approve of his face being on my wall, but whatever. It’s definitely a conversation piece.
We thought about putting it on the inside of the bathroom door to startle people, but then decided everyone would think we were really weird.
Q: Weird or hilarious? The way you ended up styling the bathroom is quite a departure from that, though – much more feminine. What made you decide to do a floral statement wall in the bathroom?
A: When we moved in, the bathroom was this weird, vibrant teal color. I like blue tones a lot (if you can’t tell), but it was too much in that little bathroom.
My husband isn’t into having super girly decorations, so I felt like it was my shot at having a bold, floral statement wall, without it being totally in his face. The tiny bathroom was the perfect spot!
Q: That’s smart, and it really makes that room pop with a little bit of color. How do you balance those pops of color with your clean, minimal style?
A: I try to pick one color, like the navy couch, and then pick one or two colors that would accent it without looking busy. Obviously, I’m drawn to blues. I also really like yellows and greens, though those tend to end up as small pops of color throughout the house.
Q: You mentioned your navy couch. Do you have a favorite piece of furniture?
A: Definitely our dining room table. It was really a labor of love. We picked the boards ourselves from a place that sells reclaimed lumber.
We thought it was really cool to be able to build the table where we would have family dinners, host friends and have other gatherings. We cut the board to length, sanded for what felt like forever and then, since it was cold outside, we moved it in to our little house and I applied coat after coat of polyurethane until I got the finish I liked. The hairpin legs are from a seller online.
Q: That’s awesome! What a cool story to have behind your dining room table. Do you have any other favorite features in your home?
A: By far, the best feature is the old, creaky floor. Sure, they’re kind of beat and the boards don’t line up well, but I like to think about the families that came before us that these floors supported. It’s really cool to think about how much history this house has seen.
Some would say my house has “character.” But really, let’s face it – it’s just super old. The house was built in 1922, so nothing is quite perfect, and I love it.
My favorite room, though, would have to be the living room. Mostly because of the fireplace.
When we first saw the house, we walked in and were greeted by a crackling fire on a cold night. That was pretty much all it took. I was sold. That original stone? I can’t take it.
Q: That sounds magical! What a way to sell a house. I also noticed your record player in the corner. If it’s up to you, what’s playing?
A: If it’s my choice, I’ve got Sufjan Stevens or Ella Fitzgerald on the record player. If it’s my husband’s choice, it’s probably Stevie Wonder. But if our son gets to pick, it’s always Buddy Holly.
Q: A three-year-old who’s first choice is Buddy Holly? He’s going places! It’s seems like the deeper you go into the home, the more entertainment pieces you find, like the record player, the old radio and then, your entertainment room. Was that on purpose?
A: Sort of. We didn’t like the idea of the TV being mounted over the fireplace. That would have caused it to become the focal point of the room.
We intend our living room to be for conversation and fellowship, rather than have it be a place where we immediately turn on the TV. When guests are over, we want to be able to concentrate on the relationship rather than the screen in the room.
Q: This question might be a little more random, but can you tell me about the stickers on your books?
A: Haha, those were the brainchild of my husband, Sam. He is a super organized person (I am not at all), so it made sense to him to use the Dewey Decimal system to keep all of his books in order.
He lends them out regularly, too. So he found an app that scans the Dewey Decimal number, and keeps track of who borrows the book. Like I said, he is a super organized person.

Whenever a home is up for sale, it’s inevitable a few neighbours will slip into the open for inspection for a sticky beak. This was the case for interior designer Therese Carrodus, but unlike most nosy neighbours, she and her husband ended up buying the property! ‘I just remember first stepping onto the front verandah and suddenly imagining Rosie having her first day of school photo, and later having her school formal photo taken at the front door,’ recalls Therese. ‘It just sort of felt straight away like it was a home I could see the kids growing up in.’
Drawing on her interior design background, Therese immediately saw the home’s potential, recognising its ‘daggy but easily transformable interiors.’ Her approach was to reconfigure the existing floorplan to be more functional, adding a new kitchen, laundry, built-in dining area, and custom glass doors in the living space.
While many period home renovations feature a contemporary open-plan area at the rear, Therese desired a more cohesive look, where the new and old parts of the home would flow seamlessly from room to room. ‘I wanted the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of the house to feel a little bit playful and eclectic, with some bold colour and texture, but at the same time, I didn’t want any of those elements to be overbearing or polarising in any way,’ she says. A bold palette of moody blues, plum and oxblood reds feature throughout the home, with more subtle hues of blush and grey to balance things out.
The renovation was completed in 2018, just 10 days before the arrival of baby Hughie! As a busy Mum to Rosie (6), Barnaby (3) and Hughie (1), Therese isn’t precious about her home. ‘The kids are often running (and sometimes scooting!) up and down the hallway, as well as making cubby houses in the living area, and just generally making a mess somewhere in the house!’
