While it is true that fandom tends to have a lot more M/M all things being equal, the argument that if Worm was 'mainstream' all these random M/M ships people are imagining would be 'soooooo popular' and outrank all the f/f and stuff...

They miss a key fact.

Worm is one of the fandoms that would still have more F/F - because there are fandoms that have significantly more F/F than M/M. OUAT, Supergirl, The 100, She-ra, just off the top of my head. And one of those things those shows have in common is: Female Lead. What they also have in common is a LOT of female characters for the MC to be paired with, and a very popular ship for the MC. In some cases, that ship is canon (Catradora, Clexa) and in some cases it's not canon and often has the writers accused of queerbaiting (Swan Queen, Supercorp)

Yes, there'd be a lot more M/M if Worm was mainstream, but Smugbug would still be the juggernaut ship, and Wolf Spider still pretty damn large too. Because Worm has a lot of female characters for Taylor to play off of, in terms of shippable.
