Monument honoring the patriots who defended Chestnut Neck in 1778 from a British attack during the Revolutionary War. Located in Port Republic, NJ, along the Jersey shore Chestnut Neck was a busy trading post along the Little Egg Harbor River notably supplying George Washington's troops in Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778. It was also the home of American privateers who attacked British ships stealing supplies as well as the ships themselves. Oftentimes the British ships were adapted to be used by the privateers. This activity prompted the British to send a fleet in October 1778 to attack Chestnut Neck, however, were only able to retrieve some supplies and with word of the close proximity of Count Pulaski retreated. #searchingforamerica #nj_history #revolutionarywar #portrepublic #privateers #chestnutneck #jerseyshore #route9 #americanhistory #1778 #historiclandmark #monuments #littleeggharbor #mullicariver (at Chestnut Neck Marina in Port Republic, NJ)
