The Maya site of Nixtun-Ch’ich’ in Guatemala Shaped Like a Crocodile?
Researchers at the Maya site of Nixtun-Ch’ich’ in Guatemala, dated at 800-500 BCE have proposed the city was laid out in the form of the back of a crocodile. Crocodiles represent the earth as the crocodile Itzam Cab Ain. This monster was sacrificed and dismembered at creation. It became the ordered universe.” It also represents the cosmic destroyer slain by the gods to create the surface of the earth. It is linked to fertility and re-birth. The crocodile is the base of the world tree linking the underworld, earth and the sky. Like turtles in the Maya cosmology, they are a link between the underworld and earth.
In the Maya world, Crocodiles appear on altars and public architecture and in ceramics and carved materials. Crocodile hides were worn by shamans and crocodile remains are found in ceremonial remains. The topography of Nixtun-Ch’ich’ has been uncovered by the researchers, and GPS has shown the layout of the site. It does look like a crocodile with its bilateral symmetry and city blocks that look like the scaly back of the animal, which appears to be shifting into the lake, the researchers say.
A defensive ditch may represent the slit throat of the crocodile done by the gods. In the mythology, there is a hole in the back of the crocodile. A cenote at the site may represent that. The researchers admit that this may be projection by the researchers wanting to see a crocodile. Others are also skeptical. The site was planned as a sacred landscape aligned with the movements of the sun
The research is published in Frontiers in Political Science

“The GPS equipment detected slight rises and falls in the landscape that had been all but invisible beneath the grass. Buildings and streets Pugh hadn’t noticed before began emerging from the data. And when he started piecing together a new, more complete picture of Nixtun-Ch’ich’, a striking pattern jumped out at him. The city’s buildings were arranged in straight lines, like the structures on a modern city block. Major streets ran almost exactly east-west, with shorter north-south avenues intersecting them at nearly perfect 90-degree angles. It was unmistakable: Nixtun-Ch’ich’ was laid out on a grid, an urban form so unusual in Mesoamerica that Pugh and Rice had never even thought to look for it. Pugh then realized that the paths he had been following through the grass weren’t originally created by grazing cattle. The animals were walking along ancient streets, and he had been too.”

Nixtun-Ch’ich’ is a large archaeological site on the western edge of Lake Petén Itzá. Its size and central planning warrant its classification as a city. The site covers 2 km2 and includes an immense gridded ceremonial core and several outlying ceremonial groups. The core contains a large triadic group and numerous other monumental constructions. The outlying ceremonial groups include two ballcourts, one of which is likely the second largest in the Maya region.
Nixtun-Ch’ich’ has an urban grid with fairly well ordered streets and avenues dated to around 2300 years ago. This is one of the earliest urban grids in the Americas and likely emerged as the ancient Maya developed more complex forms of political organization. It was likely a means to regulate and perhaps dominate the inhabitants. Nevertheless, the grid system at Nixtun-Ch’ich’ did not catch on and is not seen in later Maya cities.
Preclassic constructions include both rubble and cut stone masonry. Our work has not only encountered Preclassic walls, but also the quarries from which the builders obtained their stone and lime.
In the above figure (second figure), one can observe a Late Preclassic expansion built adjacent to a transitional period (late Middle Preclassic period to early Late Preclassic period) construction. The Late Preclassic wall is in the foreground and the transitional wall is immediately behind it. Both walls include cut stone blocks, but the courses of the transitional period wall are better dressed.
Plaster
Preclassic period lime plaster was largely composed of fired limestone. The quality of plaster in Peten varies significantly through time and space.
Some late Middle Preclassic constructions included thin layers of plaster spread immediately upon soil or a soil/rubble combination. The surfaces could be either “floors” or “walls” and transition zones between the two tended to be curved. While similar thin floors are seen in the Postclassic, Postclassic plaster surfaces were generally not as durable.
---
At the SAAs, Timothy Pugh discussed how the roads of Nixtun-Ch’ich’ were paved with cobbles and then plastered over several times during the course of the site’s history. Over time, the elites slowly encroached into the broad streets of the city by expanding their households. Nixtun-Ch’ich’ went from having large public streets where people could freely move to narrower streets with more restrictive movement.
