I'm Scottish and a bartender, and I know you've had some questions about VAT 69. It was primarily export produce. The Scots don't tend to drink blends as a rule. We massively prefer malts. Scotland's premiere whiskey is Jura, which has a much greater flavour profile with way more depth and complexity. I have been told by old men that VAT 69 tasted like sugary water. It had a notoriously light and artificially sweet profile, akin to Southern Comfort, while Scotch Whiskey tends to be more smokey, peaty, briney, and honey-like. Basically, Jura is made with natural ingredients, as the Scots like it, and VAT 69 artificially in the American taste. It didn't have a great reputation over here, and it was heavily associated with Americans and bad taste. To summarise, VAT 69 was light, sweet like granulated sugar, and completely unsmoked/unpeated. It wasn't a masculine drink. Southern Comfort is very much considered a woman's drink here.
Hello? I love you for this! This is the best information!
