BIG RANT:
I love Nuka World dearly but so many aspects of it feel unfinished.
The gang bosses play little to no role in the dlc - the only way to learn more about them is through terminal and holotape entries.
How come Mason doesn’t have two second in commands like Mags and Nisha? He’s absolutely not a “lone wolf” and is shown countless times to have the most loyal gang - so why not give him two “betas”?
Dixie and Savoy basically did nothing. There’s ONE random encounter event with Dixie and that’s it.
The gang bosses never interact outside of what their members tell you and occasionally what Redeye tells you.
Speaking of Redeye, where the hell is he? Why can’t we do at least one quest for him like Travis?
They literally cut Maddox’s whole story and for what?
Clearing the parks was always done really well, but Bethesda fell off with the raiders. I wish we could do more quests for them (NOT RADIENT QUESTS).
It all just feels like a waste. This DLC could have been spectacular.

im gonna be honest ur posts pose a bit of an Issue for me bc like my rewrite has a plotline that involves lilith doing some shady shit in the name of the greater good and. in the light of the whole settler colonialism thing. is there a way to differentiate her attitude from jack's because i really dont wanna come off as "she's just as bad as him" guy number 172
I STRUGGLE WITH THIS TOO…To me the distinguishing factor is that the raiders don’t act with the same all encompassing anger that jack does. I don’t think there ever could be a true “just as bad as him” argument because he wants and has the means for total annihilation. no bias, no care for the individual, he says himself he wants every man, woman, and child on pandora dead. its his end goal, quite literally nothing matters more than that. whereas the crimson raiders have tunnel vision in regards to what they want and everything else is just white noise - the bandit casualties are just a byproduct of what they’re convinced they Have To Do, but their deaths are not the underlying goal. these people are violent criminals, so who cares if they die? they were in our way. the raiders have a scale for who is important and who isn’t, and the scale has some leniency for bandits. (that service = fondness cycle we’ve talked about before.) jack has no scale. it doesn’t matter what can be offered to him or what can be done for him. everyone is the same because everyone is a bandit and so everyone should die. so on and so forth. the best example i can think of is how lilith handled the children of the firehawk: she uses them as a shield, and tolerates them because of it. this tolerance grows to fondness. she’s flattered by them killing in her name. (its only bandits dying, after all. there’s no real value lost.) and then she intervenes whenever they start burning sanctuary citizens. (people who are decidedly Not Bandits, and deserve her protection.) jack would have just killed everyone at first glance. the bandits, the settlers, the vault hunters, and everyone else within a five mile radius if he could. lilith, if incentivized, can see the humanity in her enemy. which is something that jack outright refuses to do. i think comes down to generalized apathy versus abject hatred. someone can be made to care. it is a hell of a lot harder to convince someone to love or even tolerate someone they hate.

I fully plan on organizing an entire rant about this, but for now I say:
I really think that Wilhelm deserves more attention (from people that aren't Jack fans, that is)
He's so much more than just ""evil for fun."" His story is actually kind of devastating tbh, and there's so much potential I think.
Wolf and Saint too. Nobody seems to know that they actually have their own personalities.
You know I haven't actually gotten the chance to play as him in pre-sequel yet but from what I've seen you are entirely right. When I was a kid I legit thought he was just some robot Jack made (I had only played bl2 at that point and my eye sight was total shit).
I sort of wish you could have maybe helped him out (or tried to) or literally if they gave him some more unique dialogue, intro card, whatever.
Nisha got a full quest line with lynchwood, Athena has popped up quite a bit (which is good, because I like her, but I digress), claptrap is obvious, Aurelia kinda got fucked over too but at least had some lines and plot, and if the Jack doppelganger is Timothy he also got a whole dlc to be in.
So yeah about half of them ended up dead but he REALLY got the shit end of the stick, games and fandom wise. For a fandom that loves bl2 so much he really gets looked over :(
I'd LOVE to hear about Wolf and Saint though. Maybe I should play as wilhem next to see them

per my Disciples Nuka World post;
no, no. please get into it. i'm working on a deep-dive into why the disciples are "like that" and i would absolutely love to hear other peoples' thoughts on them.
Well okay! Ranting under the cut!
So, the Disciples. They're boring. At first I was intrigued by them. They do look cool, and Nisha is presented as a scary character, but... we aren't shown anything to back that up in the end. There's nothing else really there. They don't really have a theme beyond being the same average boring raiders Bethesda always gives us.
I like the Operators and the Pack because they show the reasons people might turn to being raiders in a world like the wasteland. They're still bad reasons, but most reasons to be a shit person that turns harming others into their livelihood aren't going to be very good.
Tumblr media
But we're looking at the writing of the gangs and how they justify themselves here, not whether those justifications are valid (they aren't) in any real or even fictional sense.
In the Operators case they are all about getting ahead in their endeavours. They're almost business-like, but they aren't afraid to openly take out their competition if they have to. They're the overlap between what makes a person a raider or a triggerman, with the savvy and viciousness of both, but willing to go to lengths that triggermen usually don't.
Their leadership came from the highest class society you can find in the Commonwealth: Diamond City's Upper Stands. I'd say that a lot of their members also seem to reflect this, either coming from similar lofty circumstances or wishing to climb that ladder and act the part. Systems like that inherently run on putting others below you - ruining lives either figuratively or literally. The Operators understand and embrace this. They lie, cheat, steal, blackmail, and will use sex and mind altering substances to make sure that they will get their way.
They aren't as interested in killing people so much as they are in controlling them in some way - they're the gang who is likely most favourable of slavery, as they're always looking for ways to use other people, and you can't really use a dead body for much.
They're also the gang mostly responsible for building the gauntlet. Their people are educated and skilled, value teamwork, and are cunning and intelligent, all in addition to whatever bloodlust they might have.
The Operators want control.
With the Pack their themeing is obviously being othered from society. Both the animal(furry) aspect and their cannibalism show this, with these themes being used in the usual way to symbolise a disconnect with the subject from the rest of humanity in some way.
They're people who's desires and/or view of themselves didn't fit in with the norm of society, even for the wasteland. Now of course, not everyone who fits into that would become a raider like the Pack, but this is about themes, and it's easy to fall into being the bad guy when society already treats you like one for aspects of yourself that you can't help and/or don't want to hide. Especially when you live in a place like the wasteland, where raiders are already common enough. The Pack exists to catch those who do decide to become the bad guys they're likely already viewed as, or see themselves as in some way due to the way they feel. To let them live a life with the freedoms that polite society doesn't allow.
(As a side note, I highly recommend Lola Sebastians video essay on youtube about the subject of cannibalism in media - it's just 2hrs long and very good.)
I also find it interesting that of the three groups, the Pack is the only one who has a single leader with no chain of command sitting under them. Both Mags and Nisha have a second hand, and then another person to rely on too further down the chain. The Pack only has Mason. It's clear that Mason is both brawn and brains, and none of the pack seem to defy him - at least not openly. I don't think that's an accident either. I think Mason and the Pack are running on a very 'law of the jungle' type system, where if somone were both strong and clever enough to take him out then that person would simply deserve to be leader in the eyes of Mason and the Pack. But it does bring into question what would happen if someone were to kill Mason without taking over the Pack - or taking the rest of them out like the game forces you to. It could have been interesting to see that power struggle. Oh well.
The Pack wants freedom.
So what do the Disciples want? As far as can be seen, they just want to hurt and kill people. To cut them up and make them bleed and string their bodies up as nasty, smelly decor. Just like every other bland raider we've already encountered in the Commonwealth.
They're only shown to be interested in killing. Not teamwork, not building skills, nor living by any law or code of their own besides the usual "raiders be raidering". They have no motivation or meaning. They're serial killers - just ignoring that serial killers rarely work in teams, let alone huge ones, and often still have their own motives for doing what they do. Especially in literary works. Simply saying something like "but people like that do exist in real life!" doesn't justify Bethesda's bad writing here either. This is still a story, and in 99% of stories your bad guys need a better justification than just "they're bad!" (The only time you don't is in like, a monster centric horror movie, where the monster just exists to tear the dumb victims apart for the quick amusement of the viewers. Even then, the narrative is boosted by having a monster with a reason for being the monster.)
Nisha herself is presented to us as an interesting character; she's the one who makes a warning comment to Gage upon the player being made the new overboss, which immediately puts her in a spotlight and position over the other two gang leaders by interacting with you in the story first.
We can also learn that she's the boss that Gage fears the most. But beyond her liking to cut people up, there's no real reason for her to be so scary - not in comparison to the others. A big point about Gage is that he hates to use chems or alcohol because he dislikes not being in control of himself, which would open himself up for being killed or harmed in some way. Logically this should make The Operators his biggest concern. But instead it's Nisha. The defence for this is that Nisha is meant to be very clever. We're told this. But we aren't shown it very well, if at all.
She's meant to come off smart through our conversation with her, I guess. Because talking in a sneaky manner makes a person clever to Bethesda. We also learn that despite the truce that is meant to be in place between the three gangs she still lets her people kill members of the other gangs, just so long as they don't get caught. But... they do. We can find mutliple instances of Disciples doing sloppy jobs hiding their crimes. It's not a secret they're doing it. This makes Nisha look bad, because she clearly doesn't have as much of a lid of things as she would like to claim.
It also ignores that the Operators already have 'intelligent and sneaky' covered in their own themeing. By giving these traits to Nisha too Bethesda is simply doubling up on them but without the justification to back them up for Nisha and the Disciples. It comes off like Bethesda went "Smart guys (Operators), Animalistic guys (Pack), and... uh... let's just do regular raiders but also try to make them smart too?" And it didn't work.
Hell, you can't even argue that they're at least still better than the Commonwealth gangs, because I am far more interested in the lore behind The Forged and Judges Jury than the Disciples. And that's mostly just from notes and terminal entries! They at least have reason! Culture! In the end the effort that went into the Disciples is about the same as some of the more mid Commonwealth gangs.
There could be some arguement with the fact that the Disciples are largely made up of female NPCs over males, with enough male NPCs to count on one hand, but again there's nothing actually done with that. It could have been really interesting if it was! But it wasn't! It's just a random thing you can note yourself by running around their base. It's not actually brought up at all.
Ultimately I think a lot of the Disciples and the Nuka World DLC being "like that" in general is because there were probably plans to do much more with them but Bethesda rushed it out to get it done, meaning a lot that likely had been planned got cut, leaving us with nothing but glances beyond an ultimately disappointing experience. Like they do with everything.
Maybe in another version of the DLC Nisha and the Disciples had more of a role to play which would have fleshed them out more in opposition to the other gangs, but that's not the reality we got. We got nothing.
So. Yeah. That's why the Disciples are my least favourite of the Nuka World gangs. I'd love to see your deep-dive when you get to it. Feel free to tag me!

NOOO!! keep going! i would like 2 hear it
Tumblr media
Okay so.
The subaltern is defined as the person who is colonized, and thus placed in a submissive position. For Pandora that should be its native population only, but...
Under the framework of Orientalism that Said describes, Bandits share a BUNCH of traits with the subaltern orientalized. They are:
the Other, the Evil, the Beyond. This one is self explanatory. Bandits are barbaric, savage, so on so forth.
massively homogenized - all the bandit clans look more or less the same, even in 3 when you're taken to different planets (this is only sort of remedied in the dlc but dlc bandits have different group names so ???) they only really differ by skin color and accessories and those things are unrelated to their possible clan affiliation
never allowed to speak for themselves, i.e. everything about bandits is filtered through non-bandits. You do meet bandits and they do "speak" by themselves, but you are unable to meet them on equal footing. Krieg and Nisha are the closest, but Krieg is explicitly "not like the others" (noble savage trope anyone?) and Nisha is just straight up evil with zero nuance anyways. And then there's Vaughn which is a non-bandit who "went native" and therefore speaks for the bandit not with it.
The one feature that does not fit is the... seemingly very arbitrary nature of being a bandit? Ellie, Zane and Moxxi despite being born to "bandits" are never actually called bandits. Krieg is a type of bandit, on paper, but he doesn't get called a bandit. Both Brick and Vaughn become bandits ("go native"), but only the latter is ever called a bandit - also in the former case, the bandit thing pretty much goes away at some point (Brick tells you straight up not to be worried about killing his own people, what the fuck dude), and in the latter it's treated like an (admittedly kinda funny) joke. Also, as, I said above Vaughn is literally a "nativized" colonizer WHOSE ENTIRE CLAN IS DEAD AT THE START OF THE GAME (BOTH IN FIGHT FOR SANCTUARY AND IN BL3), so he is quite literally speaking for the bandit for there is no bandit alive to speak for themselves.
Then there's Tyreen's line about how bandits are "human wreckage left behind by the Corporate Wars"... like okay that is clearly a disenfranchised group. These people need help and you are mowing them down in droves! It doesn't help bandit clans have a disproportionately large amount of xenohuman or mutant members, like holy shit please learn to be nicer! (But I already ranted on how Borderlands assumes human nature to be Not Nice, contrary to its critique of capitalism so w/e)
...I know that this is a video game that needs a subhuman enemy for the player to mow down. But the bandit isn't just subhuman, it's an orientalized depiction of what I can only describe as a massive galaxy-spanning criminal subculture.
Btw this is the video essay I mentioned in the tags but you cropped the mention of it out. This is the video that made me read Orientalism:
youtube
Anyways Patricia Tannis may be the world's first banditist and I am unsure if that's good or not.

Handsome Jack😼
hell yeah 💞
how I feel about this character
I don't even know if I have the words to describe how much I adore him (& tim. they are a matching pair, do NOT separate!) he's everything to me and he's the best villain I've ever seen in any media ever imho. buuuut also I take great pleasure in annihilating him in his boss battle and letting lilith take the honor of killing his ass in bl2 because he's awful and I hate him (affectionate and derogatory all at once). basically he's the worst but your honor I fucking love him so much
all the people I ship romantically with this character
TIM!!!!!!!!! nisha, moxxi, rhys on occasion (they were the whole reason I got into this fandom so they have a special place in my heart). but there are several other characters I ship with him in purely sexual ways such as axton and zer0, sometimes katagawa. I love putting this man with anyone who walks
my non-romantic OTP for this character
I don't know if I have one 🤔
my unpopular opinion about this character
"hj was right/the good guy" makes me feel like I'm losing my mind actually like please can we stop using the "VHs kill too" as a gotcha? it's about CONTEXT. when literally EVERYONE in a universe is a murderer you cannot use killing people as a metric for good and bad anymore! that goes completely out the window in a universe like borderlands! I have so much more I could say on that topic including my semi-bandit-sympathizer take (also about context but the gist is that Full On Genocide Is Bad, Actually and even if you see all bandits as evil people who all deserve to die, jack lumps regular citizens in with bandits if they don't move to his designated cities with extremely strict rules that punish you for breaking them with death) but instead I'll just also say he was abusing his daughter WELL before tps so like.... and even if he was somehow justified for all of that (he is not ♥️) I don't WANT jack to be "right"! I want jack to be disgustingly evil, that's what's fun about him! killing people for cursing is EVIL! literally everything about the way he runs overlook is EVIL! but all that makes him FUN to hate (and love)! I don't want him to be a good guy, I like him dreadfully awful
this was not supposed to be a rant but I have a lot to say. this is a condensed version. sorry LAUGHS
one thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon
I wish he had open mouth kissed tim on screen /-:

i'm gonna be autistic about borderlands for a sec, everyone stay with me okay
i do not understand why the borderlands games try to make moxxi so important to jack, i dont get it, genuinely it doesn't make sense
so, spoilers for BL2, the pre-sequel, tales from the borderlands, and BL3 moxxi's heist- the general info you need is that jack and moxxi canonically dated for a period of time between the first game and TPS, how long this was we arent sure but we can make a guess that at the VERY most it was less then six months of them being together
we can piece this together by the vague timeline of TPS happening about a year or less after the first game
(this is estimated by the fact that Athena said she worked with jack five years ago, meaning TPS happened five years ago by the time the second game takes place and five years is also the amount of time that's passed between the first and the second game so- TPS took place in a very short few month period after the first game)
now we know that they couldn't have been together for long because moxxi was together with BOTH mordecai AND jack during this only a few month period of time between games- this is confirmed in a line of dialogue from BL2 where mordecai says moxxi left him for jack at the end of BL1 but then in TPS moxxi and jack are already broken up, which means they could have only been together for a few months for the timeline of five years to make sense! at the VERY most they were together for like, three months or even just a few weeks. all that matters is that it was not very long
in BL2 there's also a line about jack destroying moxxi's fighting dome because he thought she cheated on him, which is a thing he does AS handsome jack not as the normal dude jack he was when they broke up, the reason for which is still unknown but we know it was Vaguely Messy which is like whatever, sure, that sorta makes sense for him to do but what DOESN'T is the games trying to convince you that jack is in love with her.
okay you still following? cool
in TPS jack is visibly uncomfortable around moxxi and doesn't like working with her, even going as far as asking her to stop calling him 'sugar' a request she just, ignores and continues doing anyway, also during TPS is when jack gets together with nisha, his canon girlfriend he's had through the five years between BL1 and BL2. jack is INSANELY in love with nisha, we see this in the after credits art of both TPS and BL2 same with the way he talks to her/about her in TPS and in outside game material where he literally stutters when talking about her AND in the way he proudly displays her hat in his office in TFTBL alongside his most prized possessions.
he LOVES his woman with his entire heart, he gave her a whole town to prove it!! nisha is his everything outside of hyperion so, tell me, PLEASE why BL3 tried to tell us that jack was still in love with moxxi? because i do not get it at all
what im talking about here is 1. in moxxi's heist timothy is in love with moxxi, this is made canon in TPS where he fumbles through trying to flirt with her and in the heist dlc this is brought up again and timothy has a line about how jack asked moxxi on a date during his reign as handsome jack and sent timothy to go as him because he was busy but like, why would he do that? we know that jack is insane about nisha why would he then?? ask his ex that he visibly hates on a date??? and then 2. they added a fucking painting of her in his office in the casino.
i do not even know where to begin on how much i hate that detail
when you get to jack's office in the casino there are two paintings you find, one is of angel- makes sense, is his daughter who he loves even if he is really bad at it, it's the same as him having the picture of her in his office on helios, he loves his daughter, a painting of her being here is in line with everything else!! plus it's really pretty and i like it
then across from that is a painting of moxxi, which makes no fucking sense!!! why isn't it nisha!! it SHOULD be nisha!! the woman he is CURRENTLY TOGETHER WITH AND MADLY IN LOVE WITH????
i have DETESTED this detail since i first played the dlc, as much i love moxxi's heist and credit it as my favorite borderlands dlc the whole 'moxxi is jack's true love' thing makes me so confused?? they dated for MAYBE three months between BL1 and TPS and then he got into a five year long committed relationship that is never properly explored in the games and then the devs have the gall to say they wish they had done more with nisha like!!! good news you still could have!! but you didn't
anyways, i apologize for this, it has just been bothering me for months and i had to get it out and see if anyone else had noticed this and was bothered by it?? because it makes me go a little insane every time i think about it
then again maybe the character writing in BL3 is just bad
#borderlands 2#borderlands handsome jack#borderlands mad moxxi#borderlands nisha kadam#borderlands rant#i guess#i dont even like nisha and jack together either!! but the way they just erase her to shoe horn moxxi in pisses me off!!#that is NOT the love of his life#OR and hear me out here devs we COULD maybe just possibly add a picture of his first wife?? crazy thought#i swear to fuck if the answer to this is racism i am going to scream#it doesn't help that BL3 specifically has a HUGE problem with misogyny? that game is horrific in the way it treats it's female characters#also just idk jack's writing really fell off in BL3? all the characters did but his stuck out to me in moxxi's heist#it started to fall in tales when they made him super sexist out of nowhere??#and the whole him being cartoonishly evil instead of being grounded like he was in bl2 and tsp made me upset#taking this character with such depth and being like 'yeah he hates women and thinks animal abuse is funny' was a weird turn!#then they do this shit with him in bl3#there are some parts of his writing in bl3 that i like but most of it doesn't sound like him#ALSO TELL US MORE ABOUT HIS FIRST WIFE YOU ASSHOLES#i am fully going to make a huge post about jack's first wife and how awfully they treat that character as a whole#i might also talk about how gross the treatment of the female characters in bl3 is if anyone is interested? because it's gross#anyways#sorry#autism won again#a painting of nisha would have been so pretty too :(#dont play bl3 lol that's the moral here

To some, maybe running would have seemed like the coward's way out. Hell, Nisha could only imagine what her sisters thought of her, likely rolled her eyes every time her father began ranting about her insolent behaviour. That was nothing new, so she couldn't say she missed it. Or them. She was in the middle of carving off pieces of an apple she'd stolen from a stall as they passed through town on their way to where they'd began to set up camp. The responsibility of the two newbies, but they were done now, she was pretty sure. Edmund's words distracted her as she sliced through another silver of apple. "What did I do?" She echoed. "I'm just looking for purpose. Something to do. I've been very, unforgivingly bored." She replied, a little sardonic in her delivery. "Why do you care?"

Distrust came naturally to him. In Edmond’s experience, almost everyone had ulterior motives, and the promise of a reward was enough for most people to step over any concept of loyalty. So, if his guard was particularly up every time someone new joined his crew, there was nothing personal about it. Sure, most of them were criminals, and all of them were fugitives. That didn’t mean he believed they’d betray him in the middle of the night—if they wanted to, they would’ve already done it. “You didn’t say why you were here—when you introduced yourself earlier.” He’d been paying attention, but his questions remained unanswered. There was nothing to lose by asking, especially when the fire they’d lit up and the silence of the night made it feel like they had all the time in the world. “What did you do?”

Idk how fic advertising works but, made a drabble based from this post that I made yesterday
also I’m going to have it below for better acces if you don’t want to read it on ao3 🫡
“What’s your name, girl?”
The spoken question is what causes her attention to focus, ever drifting in and out, the mind of a young child trying to work its way out of the heat-induced slumber the desert had lulled her into. Faintly, she can feel hands grasping her, pulling her up from the ground, and her young eyes blink against the sheer light of the sun hanging overhead.
There’s some person above her, gritty sand causing her eyes to grow bleary, and the stranger helps her into a sitting position.
“Come on now, what’s your name, girl?”
Her name? Hers.
The Girl is what she’s been called. It’s common, it’s what this stranger is calling her now, without the ‘The’ in front of it. Girl, The Girl, untraceable and simple, common and much too formal and strange.
She strains, her head swims, and she’s much too hot in her jacket. There’s sand stuck to every part of her, and she coughs a dry, dry cough.
Her name.
She was Motorbaby, too. Not just the passing phrase of some lost runner, fresh out of the city who has yet to even give themselves a zone name. She had been like that once, wandering, referred to as ‘some lost motorbaby.’ But then, it became her own for a while, no longer spoken with unfamiliarity, but with endeaarance, soft and personal.
Then, it was just ‘baby’ for a while. Jet called her that, would chant ‘baby, baby, baby’ to get her attention, and would smile at her when she would turn her head and look at him. He would ruffle her hair after, call her that again, and it would be spoken with so much love hidden away in his tone.
When she was young, younger than she is now, and close to driving herself to sleep sat at one of the booths in the diner, her hand gripping some scuffed excuse for a crayon, he would call her ‘angel.’
“Come along now, angel.”
He would say when he stops beside her booth, his hand resting on the edge of the back of the booth. She would mumble something incoherent, press her little stick of blue harder against the dusty paper in front of her, and Jet would chuckle. She remembers him slipping into the booth beside her, letting her lean against him as she colors. He would brush back her hair, and she would fall asleep against his side, his arm wrapped around her.
As time passes, new names came.
With a flash of color, she would be picked right up, spun around in a fit of giggles, and her ‘captor’ would say, “Let’s dance, girlie!” and spin her around with her in their arms. Poison was always so full of energy around her, and they would dance the night away to Dr. Deaths' radio station.
When she used to scrape her knees, cut her hands, or knock her head against something, Poison would always be right at her side.
“I’ve got you, sugar.”
They would say, and she would cry into their shoulder as they held her close. She would always cry, and they would always hold her, would always rub her back and sing softly in her ear, and then check where she had been hurt with such gentleness. They would clean her cuts, wrap her wounds, and press a single kiss to the bandaging.
“You’re strong, sugar, real strong. Even stronger than me, I think.”
And it would always make her smile and wipe away her tears, and they would smile at her as though she was the most precious thing they’d ever seen. Better than the trans am, better than hair dye, better than their mask, and it would make her feel incredibly loved.
Then came the quiet names, spoken sparsely, but with just as much care as the others.
Those were the whispered ‘sweethearts’ and ‘darlins,’ just when it was the two of them. When she’s feel herself sleeping where she sat, her eyelids growing heavy, she’d be picked right up and held close. Kobra would carry her back to the room she shares with Jet, and he’d lay her down and pull her tattered blanket up to her chin.
He’d brush the hair from her face and whisper a quiet, “G’night darlin’.” and she’d fall asleep as he leaves the room.
She was ‘sweetheart’ when she’d sit on some rock outside and watch him go through different self-defense drills. She always told him that he looked funny doing them, and he would scoff and have her repeat whatever motions he’d just done.
“Move your foot, yeah, like that. Good job, sweetheart.” He would say when she finally copies his movements, and she’d see one of those rare, face-spitting smiles on his expression.
Then, Fun Ghoul comes around and she has all new names again.
He’d regard her with wary interest, as though unsure of what to do with her when he’s left on ‘motorbaby-sitting’ duty. Jet and Kobra out on a run, and Poison heading to speak with Dr. Death and Show Pony about some raid out in Zone 4.
Ghoul would sit and stare, and she would sit and stare, and they’d be still for a few tense, awkward minutes before a grin would curve Ghoul's lips.
“Wanna go blow somethin’ up, kid?”
And of course, she’d agree, and they’d get an awful scolding later when the others came back to find the two of them a good distance from the diner, blowing up random cans and containers.
Later, when he’s at his workbench and she’s on his lap, and her curiosity has her reaching out to touch the makeshift bomb he’s working on, he slaps her hand away.
“You’re a real gremlin, you know that?”
And she would giggle at how grumpy he sounds, but he doesn’t tell her to leave nor does he dare toss her from his lap.
“Come on girl, your name, what’s your name? You’re not some dud, are ‘ya?”
The stranger comes back into focus now, and she rubs some of the grit from her eyes. Her mouth opens to speak.
“Motorbaby! Thank the Witch— I’ve found her, over here!”
Poison beats her to it, and she twists to see them coming from a distance. Soon, the others are right along with them, and they all but collapse right beside her.
“Girlie, you had us so terrified.”
The stranger stands off and away from her now, Poisons hands wiping the sand from her dirt, and Jet rushing to get a canteen of water from his bag. And when Ghoul sits beside her, and Kobra gives her one of his rare smiles, she once again feels so incredibly loved.
