the best/worst villain trope is when an antagonist takes a hard-won truth that the protagonists have discovered, or a vulnerable truth the protagonists were attempting to hide, and uses it to tell the biggest lie. the most manipulative of villains know how to use information that should ruin them and twist the story to bolster their credibility/ruin the protagonists in turn. how do you refute a lie that is 99% true? yes, they're wrong, but how are you going to prove it? who is going to believe you?
#nimona reminded me of this trope recently#the tastiest version of this trope is when one of the protagonists is working with the villain at first but then switches sides#and at the worst possible time the villain reveals this to the other protagonists which shatters the trust they had#like yes I i was working against you at first but I've changed! I tried to tell you but I just couldn't! please you have to believe me!!#i just love the look on the protagonists faces when they think they've got the villain dead to rights#and then the villain pulls Some Bullshit to not only make them seem even more credible than ever#but also absolutely demolishes everyone else's trust in the protags#absolutely OOF delicious shit
