Hyvää joulua, @lily-learns-finnish !!! ♡ I was your secret santa for @langblrsecretsanta this year. I got a bit carried away and made you more than one gift, hope you don’t mind. Here’s the first one, it’s a movie rec list of Finnish movies, most of which I have actually seen (I admit I don’t watch a ton of Finnish stuff despite living in Finland). Perhaps you’ve seen some of these but I think watching movies in one’s target language is always good practice since the language in them is much closer to actual spoken language than what you see in text books or literature. Don’t know how easy it’d be to find these movies online but if you’re in Finland I’m sure most libraries have at least some of them.

Napapiirin sankarit (Lapland Odyssey) (2010) (x)

One of my many, many, many guilty pleasures in life is low-budget, C-list animated movies. They’re usually either terrible or forgettable, but every now and then I come across a film that, while it’s not going to light the world on fire, has a scene or an idea that I’ve never seen in other films like it, if only because it completely throws me for a loop.

One of them was this gem I found on Netflix a few years back: a Finnish cartoon called “ Niko: Lentäjän Poika”, or “Niko: the Flight Before Christmas” or “Niko & the Way to the Stars” in English.

It’s the tender tale of a young reindeer named Niko who learns that he’s the son of one of Santa’s sleigh team, born after one of them did a hit-and-quit on his mom many Christmases ago (I’m not joking; that is pretty much what his mother tells him), so Niko heads to Santa’s hidden workshop along with his adopted squirrel dad and a singing lady stoat they meet along the way.

But that’s not the weird part I want to talk about is the villain, the Black Wolf:

The aforementioned loop-throwing comes from his ultimate evil plan: originally he and his pack were just trying to eat Niko, as expected. But when they learn that he’s going to find Santa’s reindeer, his forms a new plan: he and his pack follow Niko to Santa’s workshop to eat Santa and his reindeer, thus gaining their magic powers so they can fly around the world devouring children in their beds.

Obviously they don’t succeed because this is a G-rated film, but I have to say: that is probably the greatest Christmas villain plan ever. Most villains in a Christmas special either want to cancel Christmas, steal presents, or take Santa’s place. Devouring Santa and his team to gain their powers Kirby-style followed by a Children McNugget buffet is metal as fuck.
