A couple of weeks ago I asked about people’s favorite book or books they read this year. Between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and discord, I have a list of 123 books in no particular order that my friends and family loved this year. If it was a series then I listed the first book. Each star is an additional recommendation. I haven’t read all of these, they may or may not reflect my personal opinions, though my favorite books are on the list too. The most recommended books were How Far The Light Reaches by Sabrina Imbler, one or all of the Murderbot books by Martha Wells, and Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, because if there’s one thing my friends have in common across platforms, it’s that you’re all nerds (affectionate). Enjoy, and I hope you find your new favorite book!

April books
I read a lot of romance novels this month. I think I may need a break as none of them have really grabbed me.
What I Read:
Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wynne Jones (audiobook). I had forgotten how hysterical Howl is as a character. A fun story, but. Even with me trying actively to be less judgemental about the ending... the ending still doesn't make sense and was the weakest part of the story.
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Book club book and friend recommendation. Overall enjoyed it, certainly more than @ckerouac did (you're more than welcome to go off if you like!). The dog and kid were too precocious to be believable.
Bride by Ali Hazelwood. Who knew that you could write mainstream novels and still bring in your knotting kinks from your fanfic days? Again, I liked it more than @darriness did, but it was far from my favorite.
The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes. I have this one and Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, both written about the women in the Appalacian mountains who delivered books in the 1940s, both published around the same time (apparently there's controversy). It felt very light on tone for the seriousness of the issues (such as racism, sexism, rape, alcohol use, murder). The friendships were the best part.
The Bodyguard by Katherine Center. I could have used a little less of the infantilizing of the main female character (she's a bodyguard - she can take you down) and I didn't really like the coded "change from a hardened city girl to a sweet country lass" but they were minor quibbles.
Funny Story by Emily Henry. So much better than Happy Place and full of her witty humor. I consumed it in a day. It unfortunately was released when I was in the middle of the Bodyguard so the two books are blended together in my head.
How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang. It was fine. I liked the first half better than the second, both of the protagonists definitely need a therapist and I'm really not sure I like this trend of trauma bonding romances. Also the unemotional Asian woman. And how everybody has panic attacks. And what is with men carrying women everywhere??
Counting Descent by Clint Smith. I realized yesterday that I hadn't read any poetry to National Poetry month. Luckily my library had this one available. It's my 3rd book of his and his writing is so so good. The way he can turn a phrase so it buries into your soul. I put a hold on the audiobook.
What I'm Reading:
Tom Lake by Ann Pratchet. Audiobook (read by Meryl Streep).
Pride and Protest by Nikki Payne. A Pride and Prejudice retelling. I'm only a chapter into it and it may be going into the DNF pile (so! much! telling!) - but I'm trying to give it a chance.
Teach the Torches to Burn by Caleb Roehrig. A Romeo and Juliet retelling. Also only a chapter in.
Still trying to finish A Short History of Nearly Everything...
What I'm Planning on Reading:
I don't know. I feel like I haven't read anything that has been all captivating for a while and I miss that. So if you have any recommendations, let me know.

is that … KSHITIJ ACHARI, GWENDOLYN COTHI JONES, CHALIDA ‘FERN’ JIRAYUNGYURN, GIRISHA TYAGI, SAVINA MASOE, KIRANA ‘KAI’ MALAIWONG, BAEK HARU, RYU JI-HOON, ASTORIA WYNNE-JONES, NAKANO KIMIKO, ARTURO VALIENTE, PROSPERO ESKANDER, & SALIM NOVAK returning home after a journey? the town of cynefin welcomes you. please be sure to review our local laws before you settle in.
the following faceclaims & positions are now taken: arjun rampal, yaya dacosta, mookda narinrak, aditi rao hydari, davika hoorne, zorzo natharuetai, go minsi, ji changwook, laufey lín bing jónsdóttir, anna sawai, pedro pascal, tamino amir, emilio sakraya, & the professors of beginner metallurgy (etc.), weaponry theory (etc.), & death of the superego (etc.), head librarian, lab assistant (1/4), security staff (1/3), rare magic (2/5), familiars (2/5), & muses 4, 5, 6, 11.
( arjun rampal , cis man , he/him ) — amongst the faces lining the staff portrait wall, you recognize KSHITIJ ACHARI, the forty-two year old professor. having spent seven years as a member of the verum staff, students say that they’re reminiscent of catching the edge of your cloak from the corner of your eye and wondering if you’re truly alone ; the heavy weight of a thick wine coating your throat ; the sound of journal papers crinkling while struggling to hold a leather-bound journal close ; dark nights where the sound of thunder is welcome companion ; silence so harsh it squishes your eardums painfully. their patient and meticulous temperament brings color to these halls, but be warned, you may also find them to be strict and blunt. regardless, hopefully they’ll remain when it’s time for verum to open its doors again. ╱ pal, 28, any, gmt+5:30.
( yaya dacosta , nonbinary , they/she ) — amongst the faces lining the staff portrait wall, you recognize GWENDOLYN COTHI JONES, the thirty-nine year old head librarian. having spent seventeen years as a member of the verum staff, students say that they’re reminiscent of dark-roast coffee leaving behind an imprint on the corner-edge of an ancient tome ; eyes crinkling over the ledge of gilded spectacles, one eyebrow raised in greeting ; the vanilla & musk, dense scent of a beeswax candle left too long on the hearth. their logical and knowledgeable temperament brings color to these halls, but be warned, you may also find them to be strict and irritable. regardless, hopefully they’ll remain when it’s time for verum to open its doors again. ╱ nikki, 30, they/them, est.
( mookda narinrak , nonbinary , they/them ) — one day the sea will sing of CHALIDA ‘FERN’ JIRAYUNGYURN, the twenty-eight year old healer from the town of cynefin. there will be verses about oleander unfurling in the palms of their hands, only to burn & rot black at the edges ; the whispers of a creature against the dangling, heirloom earring passed down from their family as a symbol of fortune ; the bitter & thickened taste of herbs in tea scalding the throat in the hums of their hymn, about a person who is trained in the magic of khemia. the land will know them as someone attentive and empathetic, but perhaps, you’ll hear the old crones hiss that they are secretive and particular. only the shadows of the ocean floor will bear witness to the truth. ╱ nikki, 30, they/them, est.
( aditi rao hydari , cis woman , she/her ) — one day the sea will sing of GIRISHA TYAGI, the thirty-two year old apothecary from the town of cynefin. there will be verses about the wet chill of morning mist clinging to the lining of your dress ; toes sinking into mud until it squishes so deep under your nail beds that it never leaves ; the reflection of bloodshot eyes caught in water-stained glass vials ; the press of soft hair resting on the nape of your neck ; the burn of heavy earrings dragging your tender earlobes in the hums of their hymn, about a person who is (informally) trained in the magic of khemia. the land will know them as someone vibrant and optimistic, but perhaps, you’ll hear the old crones hiss that they are nosy and deceptive. only the shadows of the ocean floor will bear witness to the truth. ╱ pal, 28, any, gmt+5:30.
( davika hoorne , cis woman , she/her ) — amongst the faces lining the staff portrait wall, you recognize SAVINA MASOE, the thirty-one year old lab assistant within the school. having spent two years as a member of the verum staff, students say that they’re reminiscent of white light passed through a glass prism, a fractured reflection in the looking glass, blooming plants in a thriving greenhouse, a dream forever just beyond reach, and eyes so bright they see right through you. their perceptive and inquisitive temperament brings color to these halls, but be warned, you may also find them to be competitive and single-minded. regardless, hopefully they’ll remain when it’s time for verum to open its doors again. ╱ liza, 28, she/her, aest.
( zorzo natharuetai, cis woman, she/her ) — amongst the faces lining the staff portrait wall, you recognize KIRANA ‘KAI’ MALAIWONG , the thirty-two year old security staff within the school. having spent one month as a member of the verum staff, students say that they’re reminiscent of a hand reaching into the monster’s open jaw, no mercy shown for a moment’s weakness  /  the first light of dawn, the world didn’t end yet  /  the echo of a blade striking, phantom grip making knuckles turn white. their devoted and diligent temperament brings color to these halls, but be warned, you may also find them to be tactless and wary. regardless, hopefully they’ll remain when it’s time for verum to open its doors again. / gen, 29, she/her, est.
( go minsi, nonbinary, she/they ) — one day the sea will sing of BAEK HARU, the twenty-nine year old trader from the town of cynefin. there will be verses about blood staining your lips, your own flesh stuck in your teeth  /  the low hum of a long - lost melody, forgotten for a reason, yet nested familiarly within a mind  /  a dance with the devil, a feast with the hells. in the hums of their hymn, about a person who is trained in the magic of khemia. the land will know them as someone charismatic and eloquent, but perhaps, you’ll hear the old crones hiss that they are vindictive and rapacious. only the shadows of the ocean floor will bear witness to the truth. ╱ gen, 29, she/her, est.
( ji changwook , cis man , he/him ) — amongst the faces lining the staff portrait wall, you recognize RYU JI-HOON, the thirty-six year old professor within the school. having spent three years as a member of the verum staff, students say that they’re reminiscent of abandoned projects of broken wood collecting dust in a spare closet, something between a smirk and a smile highlighting soft features, the coarse and warm smell of pine and oak, quiet and steady waves washing across a midnight shore, and calloused hands with a gentle touch. their charming and easygoing temperament brings color to these halls, but be warned, you may also find them to be secretive and vain. regardless, hopefully they’ll remain when it’s time for verum to open its doors again. ╱ jasmine, 22, she/her, est.
( laufey lín bing jónsdóttir , cis woman , she/her ) — one day the sea will sing of ASTORIA WYNNE-JONES, the twenty-four year old librarian from the town of cynefin. there will be verses about a newborn fawn caught alone in the hollow underbelly of the woods, a thousand faces — none of which you can place, a rose more thorn than petal, and an intolerable tenderness… a girl known by everyone and no one in the hums of their hymn, about a person who is untrained in the magic of khemia. the land will know them as someone allocentric and magnanimous, but perhaps, you’ll hear the old crones hiss that they are casuistic and vitriolic. only the shadows of the ocean floor will bear witness to the truth. ╱ steph, 29, she/her, est.
( anna sawai , cis-woman , she/her ) — one day the sea will sing of NAKANO KIMIKO, the thirty-one year old writer from the town of cynefin. there will be verses about a message scrawled and shoved into a bottle — tossed out to sea and left to wash up along the shore, the empty space left by a page torn right from the binding of a book, ink spilled and smudged on a worn sheet of paper, and a ribcage filled with flowers… but they are all dead — dead… dead in the hums of their hymn, about a person who is trained in the magic of khemia. the land will know them as someone adaptable and sagacious, but perhaps, you’ll hear the old crones hiss that they are insoluble and acerbic. only the shadows of the ocean floor will bear witness to the truth. ╱ steph, 29, she/her, est.
( pedro pascal , cis man , he/him ) — amongst the faces lining the staff portrait wall, you recognize ARTURO VALIENTE, the forty-eight year old professor within the school. having spent one year as a member of the verum staff, students say that they’re reminiscent of battered chainmail laid to rest alongside a life's purpose, blood-rimmed canines as you grin & bear an unimaginable pain, a stoic strength reminiscent of trees as old as time itself, a piercing gaze as you wrack your brain for an answer that simply won't come, and a cavernous divide between your students — half of them sycophantic, half irreverent. their dogged and venerable temperament brings color to these halls, but be warned, you may also find them to be unforgiving and brutal. regardless, hopefully they’ll remain when it’s time for verum to open its doors again. ╱ c, 23, they/she, pst.
( tamino amir , cis man , he/him ) — the halls of verum academy is home to PROSPERO ESKANDER, the twenty-four year old student of decomposition. listen to the whispers that follow them through the door of the death of the superego classroom, the ones about a morbid fascination with entropy & its inevitability, the steady rhythm of pacing footsteps as piano hands thumb through the pages of a centuries-old book, the imperceptible twitch of an eyebrow upon noticing a fatal flaw, and the rustling of inky feathers just before a crow takes flight, a charm that comes so naturally that you can't help but be unnerved. once they graduate, their legacy will be one that is ingenious and courtly in nature, but the records will not mention that they are known to be acerbic and duplicitous, too. they are, after all, the future of verum. ╱ c, 23, they/she, pst.
( emilio sakraya , cis man , he/him ) — one day the sea will sing of SALIM NOVAK, the twenty-seven year old soldier from the town of cynefin. there will be verses about sparks created by the clashing of swords, the hand that catches you right before you fall, a white eye that swirls with memories of pain and destruction — a scar acts as a remnant of a battle lost, and whispered mantras that combat despair in the hums of their hymn, about a person who is untrained in the magic of khemia. the land will know them as someone valiant and determined, but perhaps, you’ll hear the old crones hiss that they are self-destructive and impulsive. only the shadows of the ocean floor will bear witness to the truth. ╱ j, 26, she/they, est.

#56 Twelve things that will get me through Chemo (because I say they will.)
So, the doctors would like me to do six sessions of chemo, but they say depending on how I react (if badly) it may only be four or even two – which obviously is far less satisfactory in the ‘never having to worry about this shit again’ stakes. That means this is going to be an endurance game. I am going to win because my reserves of spite and bloody-mindedness are deeper than the Mariana Trench. Also, because I’m not above cheating, I have a list of charms that will get me through...
Cadbury’s Milk Chocolate Little Bars. (Thin milk chocolate that tastes like childhood.) Do I even know if I can eat these when ill? No idea. Will the simple thought of them sustain me? Yes.
Tumblr media
Several audio books, including: The Locked Tomb Series (utterly mental, only just stared it and it's insane but good), Sandman (amazing AF - the audio is as good as the comics and and better than the NF series, that's saying something), Johannes Cabal (really good fun pulp fiction), Piranesi (so dreamy and strange AF), A Darker Shade of Magic (doom upon magical world-walking doom), Nettle & Bone (not read yet but sounds great), and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrel (Regency magicians. A little Austin, a little historical, a little faerytale, a long read or listen but it will enchant you either way and you'll never be free.)
Tumblr media
Ginger chews for sugar and anti-nausea properties. Also they are tasty and the packaging rocks.
Tumblr media
Anti-nausea wrist bands. It's very basic acupuncture / pressure point without needles, but it works very well.
Tumblr media
Warm socks and flompy comfy clothes (Yes I have those slippers, no I probably won't take them to hospital, but you get my point.)
Tumblr media
Cats, and plush purple cats. Only the small purple ones can come to the hospital, obviously, but I know the real ones will sleep on me as soon as I’m home. (This isn't Spindle or Treacle, I feel I should start some sort of call for all the little Bang On The Door purple long legged cats so I can give them more siblings - seriously please give me all the little purple long-legged idiots.)
Tumblr media
My Spell Coat scarf and paper stars. (If you don't know about Spell Coats, watch the Jim Henson's Storyteller for the aesthetics or read Diana Wynne Jones - you may know her from Howl's Moving Castle, but definitely read The Dalemark Quartet.) The point is, you can weave a story to make it true. This masterpiece was made by the amazing Cassandra-Kate. I shall wear the scarf and hand out the paper stars she crafted to anyone who looks like they need them.
Tumblr media
Protein drinks. Since I have no idea how ill I may feel or how up to eating actual food I will be, I’ve ordered some vanilla flavoured protein powder in case there are days where I have to rely on milkshakes.

Creativity. When I can paint or write I will. When I can’t, I shall just splat and read or watch films. (I picked the first pic that came up on my hard drive to represent this and I do not recall what sketchbook that came from or wtf I was doing - I don't even think I have it here - but I guess it's sort of valid? Half-dead-alive-girl. Shit.

Coconut water. It tastes like the essence of liquid biscuits - Digestive Biscuits - which if you aren't from the UK won't mean much. Let's say 'healthy cookie water' to you heathens I apparently live with now.

High culture meets the wild
Restaurateur Shannon Wynne hosts an exclusive party on East Texas’ Caddo Lake to unveil a new Brad Oldham sculpture
youtube
On April 11, an email arrived in my inbox.
Subject line: “Caddo Lake Unveiling.” The email took me to a trailer that began on a dark screen, the shimmy of a tambourine like a rattlesnake tail as words appeared: Featuring the work of Brad Oldham Sculpture .
Well, this was different.
The trailer was short, but a far cry from your typical Evite: grainy footage of a scruffy musician at a recording session. “Snake Farm,” he sang, and I’d barely processed any of this before details scrolled into view: May 18, Johnson’s Ranch on Caddo Lake.
“You are invited to this event because you love good art, or because we owe you money,” read one screen, all of which gave me cult vibes in the best possible way.
The email was from Shannon Wynne, the fabled Dallas restaurateur behind the Flying Saucer, the Flying Fish and Rodeo Goat, home of my favorite burger (Royale with Cheese, medium rare).
Tumblr media
I’d never met Wynne, but I knew about him: son of Angus Wynne, the man behind Wynnewood shopping center and Six Flags Over Texas.
What I did not realize is that Shannon Wynne owns a home on Caddo Lake, a magical and mysterious place in a state full of them, and that every once in a while, he hosts parties for an intimate roster of guests in order to unveil some new art acquisition. In 2022, he hosted a party so epic that the folks at The Dallas Morning News who’d gone told me there was only one answer to this summons. Yes .
Caddo Lake is the only natural lake in Texas, some have said, a swampy expanse of shallow water where bald cypress drips with Spanish moss.
Roughly three hours east of Dallas, it feels a bit like another planet, the kind of eerily remote spot where a person could disappear from the law.
Not that I would ever do that, officer.
I stayed in the nearby town of Jefferson, with its quaint downtown square, and I booked a room at the Historic Jefferson Hotel, where owners Jeromy and Pam Jones really lean into the spot’s reputation as “the most haunted hotel in the world.”
In the hallway outside my room, my companion and I passed googly-eyed baby dolls, clown paintings, a mannequin in an antique coffin.
“We don’t have to stay here,” I told him as we walked into our room to find an antique metal diving suit in the corner, like something out of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea .
“Oh, we’re staying here,” he replied, setting down our bags. Whatever ghosts happened to be sharing space with us, they were gentle that weekend.
Tumblr media
On the afternoon of May 18, we drove 20 minutes through the Piney Woods toward the town of Uncertain (population 83), situated on the border with Louisiana.
We parked at Johnson’s Point and headed for the dock, where partygoers in floral sundresses and floppy straw hats were already loading onto pontoons and heading toward adventure.
I stepped inside a little wooden shack of a store where a brunette named Nikki worked the register, and a bearded fellow named Steve Smelley sat at the counter like a regular at the bar.
“What happens in Caddo stays on Caddo,” he told us, giving a cackle, which felt like the proper introduction.
The real city of Uncertain is little known to Dallas folk, who tend to prefer grand shopping malls and giant sports stadiums to the small-town quirk of a place that touts its reputation for Bigfoot sightings.
Uncertain is one of my favorite towns in Texas, filled with characters who could each hold down their own reality show.
Smelley told tales of partying with a young Matthew McConaughey back in the ’80s as Nikki showed me an iPhone video of local raccoons being hand-fed.
Outside on the dock, the crowd was country-club chic, silvered hair and trendy glasses. Shortly after 3 p.m., my companion and I boarded our own pontoon whose name was written in cursive on the side: Party Barge.
I don’t know if you’ve seen The Menu , the foodie thriller where a group of pampered sensualists travel to an island for the ultimate chef’s menu, but I was thinking of that 2022 movie as our group set out on the murky lake, the fumes of non-ethanol gas stinging the air (no emissions standards on boats).
“Have you seen True Blood ?” asked our guide Chaz Warren as we passed a sagging structure with peeling white paint at the water’s edge. Known as the Tea Room, the creepy shack is so steeped in atmosphere it was featured in the opening credits of the HBO vampire series. Warren plucked out a cigarette from his red pack, a brand called Eagle 20’s, as he steered us through yellow spatterdock and American lotus toward our destination.
I should mention that in The Menu , the bucket-list meal on the remote island turns out to be a revenge scheme concocted by a sadistic chef played by Ralph Fiennes.
Not to ruin the movie, but it gets dark. Fish in a barrel , I thought, as the pontoon docked near a big house situated atop a sloping green lawn.
But the tall and lanky man greeting us was a less sinister and more benevolent ringleader, in his khaki cargo shorts and white safari shirt, yellow scarf around his neck.
Shannon Wynne may be best known for his restaurants, including the era-defining 8.0 of the ’80s and ’90s, but he’s also one of the people who makes Dallas a better city, a philanthropist and an art collector who specializes in Texas names.
“I see you did not heed my warning,” he gently teased a beautiful blonde in a flowy white dress as she lightly stumbled in her wedge heels stepping onto the dock, and he reached out to steady her.
“You said dress comfortable,” she said, embracing him. “I’m wearing a hat.”
I’d been unclear on what to wear, too.
I was going for “fashionable but rugged” when I paired a cotton V-neck and black skirt with turquoise cowboy boots, but I felt a stab of envy as we walked toward the 140 or so partygoers, sipping craft brews and lime cocktails on a multitiered patio overlooking the lake.
These folks had dressed the part for an uncommon garden party — men in button-downs, women in chunky jewelry and sunglasses.
It felt more Los Angeles than Dallas: Everyone looked like they might own a tech company or a small corporation, and I suspect some of them did.
I recognized a few faces: Bud Kennedy, longtime Fort Worth Star-Telegram scribe. KERA arts editor Anne Bothwell, formerly of The News , and food maven Sarah Blaskovich, currently of The News .
I chatted with Nell Potasznik-Langford, a Dallas artist who curates Wynn’s collection, and she clued me in to a few more bold-faced names: Fort Worth sculptor/painter Nancy Lamb, Dallas photographer Kent Barker, John and Marlene Sughrue of the Dallas Art Fair.
It’s intimidating to face a group of people who recognize each other but not you, and I temporarily sought shelter in a shady spot that could have been plunked down from Fort Worth’s Japanese Gardens.
A tinkling pond of koi flanked by bamboo, the sculpture of a voluptuous woman lounging on the side, a sculpture that turned out to be by one-time University of Texas professor Charles Umlauf.
Marvin Gaye was playing on the sound system, followed by Frank Sinatra, and I tapped notes on my iPhone as a friendly mother and daughter joined me.
Rose Wright and her daughter Valeria Garcia came because Rose’s husband C. Jai Wright did landscaping on the property (business motto: “God’s living art”). We stood under a cypress tree so enormous I wondered how long it had been in that spot, and when C. Jai joined us, he explained cypress are naturally quite tall.
The ones sticking up from the lake were stunted by the water, and I will admit a second stab of envy for this vista that was somehow both natural and manicured at once.
In the distance, fat guineas and chickens pecked around the lawn near a large silver sculpture of a man with giant hands, a 2022 unveiling that was the centerpiece of the previous Caddo Lake party.
I was so focused on the crowd, I hadn’t noticed a giant white tarp at the center of the bustle. It was only when Wynne took the microphone to greet the crowd, the lake stretching behind him, that I realized it was our reason for gathering.
“What you see over my shoulder looks like a beautiful place, but it is not a nice place all the time,” he said. “This is not Cedar Creek Lake.” Wynne is the kind of skilled interlocutor who can talk about one thing but teach you about 10: Caddo is home to 216 species of birds, 47 animals and 90 reptiles, including snakes.
That last part was significant, but before we understood why, a few data points: Caddo has witnessed all six flags over Texas.
It was the site of the first offshore oil well, as well as the Pearl Rush of the early 20th century (had to Google that one). Wynne only spoke for 10 minutes, but he hopscotched from the 16th-century invasion of the Spaniards to the pragmatism of beaver pelts in pioneer days, how the port town of Jefferson became an entryway for this new thing called “ice.”
My head was spinning: There was the Louisiana Purchase, then a guy named Santa Anna murdering his way north, and somehow this resolved in the tale of Texas independence legend Harriet Potter Ames, whose story is told in the riveting 1959 book, Love Is a Wild Assault by Elithe Hamilton Kirkland.
Oh, and Lady Bird Johnson’s uncle owned this property and made ice for the general store.
“But we’re here to see the newest work by a Dallas artist,” Wynne said, as though reminding himself. Brad Oldham stood on the periphery in a blue baseball cap and khakis. I didn’t know Oldham, a friendly middle-aged guy who could pass for a sports fan at your local bar, but I knew his iconic Dallas work, The Traveling Man-Walking Tall , the whimsical and bendy silver statue I have described as “that big robot in Deep Ellum.” Wynne had been passing the statue on his way to the office, and it occurred to him that Oldham would be the right guy for his next commission.
“We tell stories through sculpture for a living,” Oldham told the crowd. He’d arrived via helicopter, a bit of theater thanks to fellow partygoers who commissioned this dramatic in-and-out (as the story was told at the event), so they could also attend a birthday party in Dallas that evening.
But Oldham had none of the flash that might accompany such a rock-star arrival.
He seemed soft-spoken and modest as he ceded the microphone to his wife and collaborator Christy Coltrin, a sunny blonde in a white button-up with a snake embroidered over one shoulder.
It was her job to find the story; it was Oldham’s job to build it.
“We gave a lot of options to Shannon,” she told the crowd, “and he said no to all of them.”
A laugh from the audience.
That was Wynne: a man who knew what he wanted. “What you’re going to see is his vision,” she explained, and with that, the reveal was here.
I heard the scrape of the plastic tarp before I knew what was happening, and I looked up toward the house to see a huge black rattlesnake coiled along one step, tongue flicking the air like a lightning split.
Oldham gave the fine-print details: The sculpture was 32 feet laid out, made in a bronze cast that weighed over 500 pounds. He didn’t want a lift on the property; instead, he enlisted seven friends to carry the snake to its new home.
Most sculpture eludes me.
I don’t “get” it, and I couldn’t tell you if the failure lies in me, or the work, but this Oldham sculpture — titled Rat Snake — could be so easily gotten.
What more did you need, exactly?
A cool black snake, poised to strike. Was he a good snake or a bad snake?
Was he a “he”?
Mysteries abounded.
Snakes are obvious villains (see Disney movies, or the Bible), but they are also secret protagonists.
As Wynne took the microphone again, he explained as much.
“Without snakes, we’re overrun with vermin,” he said. “So, the great thing about a rat snake is that it’s not aggressive. It just wants to do its job.” The sculpture had a personal meaning, too: The Wynne family divided itself into “snakes and mongooses,” the former being born into the family, the latter being bound by legal contract.
“If you’re married into the family, you’re a mongoose,” Wynne explained, before delivering the punchline: “The only thing that can kill a snake.”
There was applause, and a feast served buffet-style: crawfish and fried catfish and golden-brown hush puppies, and surely some delicious vegetables that I skipped.
I popped open a nonalcoholic Athletic brew (Wynne, being sober himself, accommodated those of us who no longer drink), and I took in the view as the sun sank and a cool breeze trickled across my back.
The deep history of the land, the light touch of the host, the casual cohabitation of art and nature, as though one didn’t have to choose between country and city, wildlife and culture.
I settled my feet on my companion’s lap as he went to town on some crawfish, and our table started to fill with the crumpled napkins of our dining companions, the sign of a successful party.
Shortly before 7 p.m., a helicopter descended onto the lawn again.
The mechanical beast hovered and skittered like a frustrated dragonfly, wind from the propeller blades rattling the tops of the cypress and oak trees like a monsoon was coming.
David Bowie sang on the sound system.
This was quite the exit, though both artist and host stuck around. No offense to the party over in Dallas, but the rest of us weren’t ready to leave yet.

May 21, 2023  #rivers #narrowboat #offgrid   If you're a fan of boating on YouTube you surely must know Nikki and Jason Wynn, ex-RVers turned global sailors. Now having a brand new boat built, they decided to take a little time out to visit Britain and have a go at narrowboating. So I sorted them a 10-day trip on the Llangollen Canal.

Various libraries, NY - what has Wynn been reading? Mama Lola by Karen McCarthy Brown (brilliant ethnographic work all around, the story of an incredibly powerful woman, her family, and their stories in Haiti and NYC) Testo Junkie by Paul/Beatriz Preciado (required reading for anyone with or without a gender) The Islander by Tomàs O'Criomhthain (newly-ish translated autobiography of a fisherman from Great Blasket, an island off the coast of Dingle, which to this day is still part of the Gaeltacht) High Society: the central role of mind altering drugs through history by Mike Jay (a well-condensed history of drugs and medicine through the lens of Western European/British culture and law. Great section on the opium war.) A Woman's Guide to Cannabis by Nikki Furrer (disclaimer: i am not in this book's target demographic. Despite its painfully kitschy appearance, this book actually contains a ton of really useful information about the science of cannabis and responsible use) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjGNtKqvu4l/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hi, are there no lesbian transgender women? I noticed that in most posts about trans women, their sexuality states "N/A". Since my wife is both transgender and a lesbian, it would mean a lot to her to see herself represented
Not everyone specifies their sexuality when coming out as trans so some people are listed as N/A or not available. However those who are listed as a trans woman AND are a lesbian include:
Catherine/Cate McGregor
