An in-depth review of 'What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: An (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle' by @nicole_rudick is up now @nationmag @jilnotjill writes, "The unconventional volume is a selection of prose writings and graphic material by Saint Phalle—drawings, prints, and sketches—compiled to tell the story of her life and work. The subtitle dubs it 'an (auto)biography,' which feels right in its hybridity: This is a highly subjective critical endeavor that’s almost frustratingly faithful to its source. Rudick has written a foreword and an afterword, but otherwise her hand is mostly invisible. In this way, the book posits that the best way to understand an artist is not by considering some combination of private and public encounters, but almost solely through their own work and words. 'What could be closer to the artist’s voice than the artist’s own voice, closer to her sensibility than that produced by her own hand?' Rudick asks. Coming from a biographer, that question feels both radically and deceptively simple." Read the full review via linkinbio. Published by @sigliopress #nicolerudick #nikidesaintphalle #artistwritings #artistbiography #artistautobiography #nikidesaintphallebiography #nikidesaintphalleautobiography #nanas #tarotgarden #harrymatthews #jeantinguely #siglio https://www.instagram.com/p/CcgLAB2pQ4g/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

In Nicole Rudick's 'What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: An (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle' from @sigliopress "The person who emerges is open, driven, and often remarkably perceptive about who she is and why. 'One of the reasons very little has been written on my work is that I am difficult to categorize,' the artist writes in a draft of her text 'Niki by Niki.' It’s lucky, then, that she has left so much writing herself." Read an in-depth review of the book by @laurenmofo today @hyperallergic via linkinbio! "In 'Drug Journey,' an unpublished manuscript written in 1995, Niki de Saint Phalle wonders, 'Does one have to go through catastrophe to arrive at vision?' It’s an apt question for the French American artist, whose life was marked by heartbreaking challenges, from surviving sexual abuse at the hands of her own father, to losing close friends to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, to battling debilitating illness in her later years. And yet, despite facing incredible adversity, Saint Phalle’s artworks — including her groundbreaking 'Tirs' series and monumental 'Tarot Garden' — are some of the most powerful and exuberant of the 20th century. 'Perhaps to create something incredible,' she writes later, 'one has to go through the extremes.' @nicole_rudick #nicolerudick #nikidesaintphalle #artistwritings #artistbiography #artistautobiography #nikidesaintphallebiography #tirs #nikidesaintphalleautobiography #nanas #tarotgarden #harrymatthews #jeantinguely #siglio https://www.instagram.com/p/CalHUvOs9pp/?utm_medium=tumblr

!!! A great endorsement for Nicole Rudick's 'What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: An (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle' in this week's @tmagazine T List! Erik Morse writes, "Nicole Rudick’s illustrated biography of nouveau réalisme artist Niki de Saint Phalle, 'What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined,' takes its title from a (perhaps intentionally) misquoted snippet of William Blake’s 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell' (1790) that appears in one of Saint Phalle’s typically rococo doodles. The line is also the perfect tag for the provocateur’s particular brand of 20th-century aestheticism. 'I would spend my life questioning,' she wrote in a 1992 note addressed to her dead mother. 'I would fall in love with the question mark.' Such voracious curiosity led to her various autodidactic pursuits as a painter, draftsperson, sculptor — she is probably best known for her Gaudí-inspired installation, 'The Tarot Garden,' in Pescia Fiorentina, Tuscany — writer, filmmaker, gardener and perfumer. In her subtitle, Rudick (who has contributed to T) refers to the book as 'an (auto)biography,' as it is comprised almost entirely of hundreds of Saint Phalle’s colorful sketches and a trove of her letters, essays and marginalia, in which the artist rhapsodizes on, among other things, adolescent love (she met her future husband, the writer Harry Mathews, at age 11), mental illness and the harlequin fantasies that pervaded her daily life. The result is an intimate scrapbook of the life of one of the century’s most inventive artists." Read more about the book via linkinbio. Published by @sigliopress @nicole_rudick #nicolerudick #nikidesaintphalle #artistwritings #artistbiography #artistautobiography #nikidesaintphallebiography #nikidesaintphalleautobiography #nanas #tarotgarden #harrymatthews #jeantinguely #siglio #tlist https://www.instagram.com/p/CaDVO9ypFAd/?utm_medium=tumblr

"Dear...the principal of polarity" is reproduced from our book of the day, the week, the month, and maybe the year: 'What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: An (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle' by @nicole_rudick @sigliopress A Niki quote from the book: "I like the fact that I am able to say something on a very immediate level. So much of art today has become tied up with ideas, with philosophy, with the abstract, and a lot of people feel excluded from it because of the impoverishment of the image. Nobody is excluded from my work." Read more this about this week's launch event hosted by @192books and @paulacoopergallery via linkinbio and email [email protected] to order a signed copy of the book! #nicolerudick #nikidesaintphalle #artistwritings #artistbiography #artistautobiography #nikidesaintphallebiography #nikidesaintphalleautobiography #nanas #tarotgarden #harrymatthews #jeantinguely #siglio https://www.instagram.com/p/CaA5SaNJbbz/?utm_medium=tumblr

"Harry & Me" is from 'What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: An (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle' — the new release by @nicole_rudick — published by @sigliopress that's launching this week with an online talk hosted by @192books and @paulacoopergallery (see linkinbio for more info). A quote from the book, which is derived from Sant Phalle's visual and textual works: "When the clinic finally had room for me, Harry took me there. I noticed there was a barbed wire fence all around the facility and when I got to the room assigned to me, I noticed there were bars on the window. I pointed to them asking Harry, 'What’s that for?' And he responded solemnly, 'To catch butterflies.' Somehow his remark reassured me." #nicolerudick #nikidesaintphalle #artistwritings #artistbiography #artistautobiography #nikidesaintphallebiography #nikidesaintphalleautobiography #nanas #tarotgarden #harrymatthews #jeantinguely #siglio https://www.instagram.com/p/CaABoOXL4_k/?utm_medium=tumblr

In advance of the highly anticipated publication of 'What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: An (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle' by @nicole_rudick … @thedailyheller speaks with @sigliopress publisher Lisa Pearson @print_mag We highly recommend this interview, not only to learn about the forthcoming book, but to read about Siglio, "a small, fiercely independent press driven by its feminist ethos and its commitment to writers and artists who obey no boundaries, pay no fealty to trends, and invite readers to see the world anew by reading word and image in provocative, unfamiliar ways." Read up via linkinbio! #nikidesaintphalle #nikidesaintphallebiography ##nikidesaintphalleautobiography https://www.instagram.com/p/CZKs_LcJc1o/?utm_medium=tumblr
