新野の盆踊り(Bon Ceremony and Dance in Niino, Anan-cho town Nagano pref) No.2
The last night of Niino Bon Dance, people, alike these two nights, had been dancing all night. Short before the morning light had come they unfastened Kiriko dourou from a wooden stage. Kiriko dourou is a large paper lantern which the spirit of dead family member to have passed away last year stays in. Now it is the time to part. The dead must return to the another world. Some people carried Kiriko Dourous on their shoulders and began to march from the end of street to the graveyard. But other people tried to prevented their progress, forming scrums and singing songs, they tried to stop the march. They can't stand the parting. But ringing a bell the march pushed its way. Many scrums were formed but disbanded.
At last the march arrived at the graveyard. There all Kirio dourous were burned and the priest made a magical behavior to cut the connection between this world and the dead people.
After Kiriko Dourou had been reduced to ashes, people left there singing a song, it tells us the coming of the autumn.
(The end of story, thank you)

新野の盆踊り(Bon Ceremony and Dance in Niino, Anan-cho town Nagano pref) No.1
Niino(新野) Bon Ceremony and Dance is famous because of having an original feature to see and see off the dead people's spirits. We Japanese believe that during the Bon (14th-16th Aug, or 14th-16th July in some places) the dead people's spirits come home. So each family prepare the alter to treat them. Especially people pay great attention to the spirits of family members who died last year or recently. It is the first time they come home. We call this '新盆 Niibon'
In Niino, the families that have Niibon spirits make a '切子灯籠(Kiriko dourou)', a large paper lantern. People believe that the spirit of dead family member stays in it. They put it at the alter in their house. And on 16th evening they bring it to the specific place on the town street. 'やぐら a high wooden stage' is there. For these 2 nights it was a center of Bon dance. People hung ‘切子灯籠’ on it. And now, this is the last night. (to be continued)
