BUDAPEST - PART 2 OF 3 – Nightlife and non-visited tourist attractions
This part is interesting for those who’s got a little extra time available, because they are placed where you are going to need it in a larger amount than the attractions showed in the first part. Unfortunately I couldn’t do them and not even like a city tour (highly recommended for those who’s got a good amount of money) at least to glance at them. However, for you who can be at least 2 extra days it’s a good deal, so go ahead!
NON-VISITED TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
1. Daisy Island (Margit-sziget): Before it was a religious retirement and there can be found 2 churches and the ruins of the home-monastery of the Princess Daisy, daughter of the King Béla VI, who names the island. Opened to the public in 1869, this is the most beautiful park of the city. There is still a big thermal bath complex. When walking or biking by the island you find cafés and kiosks with snacks and ice creams. A very pleasant place to be.
Arriving there: BatthyanyTér (Red Line) subway station, at Buda-Side, and Nyugati Pályudvar (Blue Line), at Pest-Side. Both are a little distant from the island, but they are in a walking distance. You should get the directions with the agents at the subway stations, in the exit at the stairways, they speak English, no worries.
2. Heroes Square (Hősök tere): Located at Városliget, or City Park neighborhood, this is a Hungarian relic of a remarkable good taste and it let me sad for not being there, because I value open places like the squares, the parks and the rivers.
This square opened the Celebrations of the Millennium in 1896, still when part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and there is also the Monument of the Millennium with its columns exhibiting the greats leaders and politicians from Hungary. Its main column shows Gabriel, the Archangel.
Around the park you still can find:
Museum Of Fine Arts
Castle Vajdahunyad
Mucsarnok Gallery Of Arts
Church Of Ják
Széchenyi Thermal Baths: The largest thermal bath of Europe with its famous healing properties.
Arriving there: Széchenyi fürdosubway stations (Red Line).
3. János-Hegy Chair lift: With this chair lift you go from the highest summit of the city called János-Hegy, measuring 526m of high, until the summit Zugliget. This is a calm tourist attraction because it’s not crowded, almost forgotten by the tourists and I am one of these who forgot this marvelous place. This view of the city rivals with the Gellért Hills view. It’s recommend for those brave people who’s not afraid of high places. I feel a high level of regret for not being aware of this point of the city. I discovered after returning to Brazil.
Arriving there: XII District - Zugligeti útca, 93 - bus n. 291 departing from Nyugati pályaudvar subway station (Blue Line).
4. Thermal Baths and Swimming Pools: The thermal baths exist since the Roman Era, but the Turkish were the people who better explored the natural resources of the city. There are currently 31 thermal baths and aquatic spas around Budapest, some with accessible prices are subsidized by the government as an incentive for attracting the tourism. Nowadays there’s a huge range of options in town, since the recreational til the healing, among the most famous, the Gellért Hotel and the Heroes Square are the most reminded. You make your option. Here’s a tiny list for you make your own research:
Széchenyi Baths
Gellért Hotel and Baths Complex
Danubius Grand Hotel
Danubius Health Spa Resort Helia
Hajós Olympic Pools
Király Baths
Lukács Baths
Palatinus Strand
Rácz Hotel& Thermal Spa
Ramada Plaza Budapest
Veli Bej Baths
Rudas Baths
5. Statues Through The City: When walking by the city you’ll see some statues representing real people who were very famous for living in those locations doing their daily actions like swimming, playing and talking to a dog, for example, like they are still alive. This is art in the streets. Here are some statues that can be seen:
BUDAPEST BY NIGHT
On request! Despite I’m not a night person, a party person, I usually prefer to stay in calm places at night or in places with a good night view for resting from my walking goals, yeah, the age is coming! I decided to include some places to go out by night, like bars and dance clubs, but thanks to Blanka who works at Aventura Hostel, a lovely place to stay which I highly recommend to be hosted without spending a lot of money, it was possible to make it happen. I could get information in the websites, but I still prefer the personal opinions because the bring the experience, therefore, these are real hints and much more interesting.
From my point of view, the Hungarian women are one of the most beautiful of Europe, more beautiful than the Czechs (that are more famous), otherwise the most beautiful of the entire Europe, because their beauty is in their simplicity, not only the physical beauty. I got sad for returning to Brazil with this idea. I have a wonderful idea of what I’d find out If I’d go out by night there. It’s very stimulating and it’s a shame that I was so tired. Lots of regrets.
Well, let’s stop of beating around the bush, the night life of Budapest is famous by the ruin pubs. The name sounds weird, but this is a tendency created from 21st century on. Usually they are located in the central area of the town, close to Danube. They bring a retro air to our modern times with refurbished furniture from old cinemas, from the grandma’s house and any abandoned place that can supply material in this line. The ruin pubs are mobile, they close and re-open in other place offering to their clients attractions like movies, exhibitions and workshops, besides the beverages and dance floors. They are a kind of cultural centers and, in my humble opinion, they add more than a single bar. They are open the whole day including Sunday. There’s no branches, the originality rules, it’s a conceptual stuff. I don’t know If anyone has brought this idea here to São Paulo, mainly the “tuned people” from Augusta Street, probably not, because I saw few Brazilian people there in Budapest. Here are some of the pubs recommended by Blanka:
Let’s get started by Pest-Side, that one of the Central Market:
1. Szimpla Kert: A pub very popular, open since 2002, with 3 floors and dance music all nights. With a peculiar look, which reminds me an abandoned house, but with modern chairs and tables and places for parking bicycles. Info: http://www.szimpla.hu/en/about-us
Kazinczy utca, 14.
Phone: +36 20 261 86 69
In the Jewish Quarter, there are many ruin pubs, basically 1 in each corner. Among them:
2. Fogas Ház: This is one of the big ones. Loud dance music. Info:
http://www.fogashaz.hu/ ou
https://www.facebook.com/fogashaz/info?tab=overview
Akácfa utca, 51.
Phone: +36 1 783 8820 [email protected]
3. Ellátó Kert: This is still, for talking. Info:
https://www.facebook.com/ellato.kert/about
Kerület Kazinczy utca, 48.
Phone: +36 20 527 3018
4. 400 Bar: Besides of bar and dance club, they have food and arts. I guess it can’t be classified as a ruin pub. Info: http://www.400bar.hu/
Kazinczy utca 52/b
Phone: +36 20 776 0765
Now getting out of the Jewish Quarter:
5. Kisüzem: A very special hint!. A smaller but cozy pub. Info: https://www.facebook.com/Kisuzem
Kis Diófa Utca 2.
Phone: +36 1 781 6705
Let’s cross the bridge and go to Buda-side, that one of the Castle:
6. Bem Mozi: It was used to have movie sessions, but now it’s only a pub. Live music happens here.
Info: https://www.facebook.com/mozi.bem?fref=ts. ou http://bemmozi.blogspot.com
Phone: +36 30 560 1215
7. Átrium: A pub that was used to have cinema, but now it brings cultural events. Info: http://www.atriumfilmszinhaz.hu/ ou [email protected]
1024 Budapest, Margit krt. 55.
Tel.: 06-1 317 9338, 06-1 318 9844
8. Szatyor bár és galéria: Pub and gallery. Info: http://szatyorbar.blog.hu/
1111 Budapest, Bartók B. út 36.
Phone: (06 1) 279 02 90
Finishing this section, 2 pubs that are the big deal for me, they are located at City Park (or Városliget, where the Heroes Square is located) that are open only during the summer. I understand the reasons, because the European winter cannot be a pleasant place with a freezing temperature, it’s a single view from a person who’s used to live in a country that makes 30º during the winter, freezing huh?
9. Kertem: Pretty much a park where you stay over a lawn with a large tent. It’s a great proposal, simple and super pleasant to my eyes.
Info: http://www.kertemfesztival.hu/ ou
https://www.facebook.com/kertemfesztival.
Olof Palme sétány, 3
Phone: +36 30 225 1399
10. Pántlika: Other great option in the open air. And look at this, you can go by bike, I enjoyed it too much. I became a fan immediately. Take a look in the roof designer!
Info:https://www.facebook.com/pantlika/info?tab=overview ou http://www.pantlika.hu/
Hermina útca, 47
Phone: +36 70 376 9910
Well, after this part I got said for not going anywhere… 1 minute of silence for my stupidity. Don’t follow my example, go and have fun!
Blanka, once more thank you so much for the fantastic hints!
Yeah people, we are close to the end, part 3 is coming soon. Au revoir!
