Love love LOVE being nightblind...had a different shift tonight, got home in the dark...clipped the edge of a roundabout, because the lighting is pretty bad right there...and it's not really a good one in daylight(waaaaay too small)...managed to stay upright somehow...am wondering if all my alternate others in all my alternate universes, are being snuffed out,one by one....am I the original me...or a copy?

Before I begin, I want you to know I am taking a calculated risk in telling you this story, because even though it’s been nearly fifteen years the other involved parties will abso-fuckin’-lutely recognize themselves in this and I’m not in the mood for that phone call.
But here we go anyway.
-
It was two-thirty in the morning at a Casey’s station in a part of Iowa so rural it wasn’t even ‘unincorporated,’ and I was kicking around a gravel parking lot, looking for a rock big enough to break a car window. It was September 21st, 2006, and I was out of luck, unfortunately. Again. Still.
I shuffled back to the broken concrete sidewalk in front of the Casey's, muttering a stream of profanity so inventive and foul it would have made a seasoned sailor take note, and took back my seat on the curb I'd so recently vacated just in time for my traveling... companion, whom we shall call Elise, to waddle back out the door.
Picture Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII. Picture another Aerith Gainsborough. Now imagine that the first one has eaten the second, and determinedly squeezed back into her original dress via creative use of shapewear and a black PVC corset with seriously inadequate bust support, and you have Elise.
"Look!" she dangled a brightly colored bag of candy in front of my face, cheap plastic bangle bracelets jangling with the motion, and leaned back against the hood of the 1993 Oldsmobile sedan parked in front of me. "They have Peachie-O's!" She tore into the crinkly plastic and hummed as she crammed half the bag into her mouth at once. "You want some?" she mumbled through her mouthful.
I did not want Peachie-O's. I wanted her imminent expiration. My mouth tasted like gravel dust, old French fries, and the swig I'd taken of the Mountain Dew that was still sweating in the center cupholder of the very much locked car in front of me. I looked up at Elise, very maturely did not tell her how she would surely die by my hand before dawn, and declined.
"They're really good, though!" she exclaimed around another half-chewed gummy mouthful. I narrowed my eyes, and a little of her exuberance went out of her as she swallowed. "You're not still mad, are you?" she asked.
"Gee, whyever would I be mad?" I asked. It couldn’t have been that she admitted to having gone off her Ritalin the day before because it made her fidgeting on long car rides. It couldn't have been that we were two hours out of Maryville and thirty minutes after sunset when she'd belatedly confessed that she was nightblind, and I couldn't drive her car's stickshift. It couldn't have been that we were two hours late to rendezvous with our mutual friend (whom I shall call Marie) in Ottumwa.
It certainly couldn't have been that we'd been stuck at this goddamned gas station in BFE for three hours because SOMEONE wanted to use all five of her Sailor Moon keychains at the same time, and the one that had her car key on it, the blue-haired Sailor Mercury, was still dangling from the ignition where Elise had stupidly left it when she locked the car doors because she had to pee rightnow.
"Well, I said I was sorry," Denise said. She slouched down and touched her toes together like a toddler in time out, presumably in an attempt to be cute, but the effect was spoiled by the way her cleavage framed her chin and her long, overstyled brown wig slipped backwards off her head, exposing the white wig-cap beneath. Who drove hundreds of miles in full (terrible) cosplay attire, honestly.
I didn't have any room to judge anyone's fashion errors, not that I was letting it stop me.  We were on our way to Atlanta for a reasonably famous anime convention, and I had dyed my hair "Black Cherry" the night before in honor of the event. It was a great color, a gorgeous purple-y burgundy, before it had decided to slide off my hair and onto the towel, my skin, my pillowcase, my clothes and pretty much anything that came into contact with my hair within the first five hours after application. A great deal of the color had thankfully stayed behind, but my hair was now a color in the same family as neon fuschia, which was emphatically not the desired outcome.
I had a lot riding on my eye-searingly bad hair. Not that I'd ever admit it to my family or most of my friends, but I was a semi-famous fanfiction author on the internet, and part of why I was even going to the convention in the first place was to meet some fans to, (God help my ridiculous, over-inflated ego) sign hardbound copies of my work. Someone had printed out copies of my unrefined amateur pornography, designed a cover for it, and hardbound it. That deserved recognition, and instead of the overwhelmingly awesome writer with purple hair and mirror-shined shit-kicker Doc Martens, they were going to be getting a chunky twenty-year-old with streaky fuschia hair and dirty boots. Ugh. God.
I checked my phone to see if I had any new texts from Marie, and in that at least, I was not disappointed. "Congrats," the text read, "you've driven me to smoking."
I keyed in a painstaking reply with my thumbs on the plastic keys of my Tracfone. "She's driving ME to homicide, I am not going to jail because of YOUR friend.“ (It is worth mentioning at this time that I knew both Elise and Marie from LiveJournal, and only from Livejournal. In retrospect, deciding to go on a long roadtrip with two weird fucking Iowans I’d never met in person before was ill-advised. I deserved every second of aggressive nonsense.)
Elise poked at my knee with the toe of her boot and offered me more candy with a stupid grin, this time a Twix Bar, which I accepted long enough to throw at her head. I missed.
"WHY are you so happy?" I snarled. There was no earthly reason to be happy right now. When it had first become apparent we were stranded by Elise's overwhelming attack of stupidity, I'd gone into the gas station and called every locksmith in the telephone book. None had picked up, and I was getting to be the kind of desperate that I was considering calling my parents, who would be so very surprised to find out where I was, because I'd totally failed to inform them that I was going on a bit of a roadtrip. So far as they knew, I was snug at home in my dorm room, procrastinating on papers and chugging Coke Blak like a champion.
"I was just talking to the guy behind the counter," Elise said, and dragged her wig back into place.
"And?"
She grinned manically, maniacally, even. "He said he knows a guy who knows a guy who knows this other guy, so he let me make some calls." The way she said it, I felt like that couldn't possibly end well, but it was the most useful thing she'd managed to do all night, so, together, we waited.
Right on the dot at three am, a massive black Cadillac with tinted windows pulled into the gravel of the station lot. A moment later, a guy the size of an industrial fridge, in sunglasses and a nice suit cut to make him look even blockier, got out of the driver's seat. He smoothed his suit down, straightened the hem of his jacket, and walked around the car to open the rear passenger door. Out stepped a steely-gray-haired man, over-tanned, vaguely round but not quite spherical, who could have been anywhere from forty to sixty-five. He was wearing sunglasses as well, a bulky black leather bomber jacket and tailored gray slacks, and patent black leather shoes that gleamed under the gas station lights. Expensive, oversized rings winked off nearly every other of his square, blocky fingers, and in his left hand he gripped the handle of a weather-beaten black leather satchel.
He took off his sunglasses, and asked "So where's this door that needs openin'?" in the thickest, most pronounced Jersey accent I'd ever heard in my life, and I've heard Jersey accents, my grandpa was born in Newark and even fifty years removed from the coast he still pronounced ‘water’ as ‘wourder.’
My immediate instinct was to run into the Casey's and hide in the bathroom and hyperventilate. I was staring at a mobster. I was absolutely sure of it; I knew what mobsters look like, I grew up with HBO, and my aunt's father-in-law out in Jersey was literally called Don Astarita, and he had more money than God from "real estate," not to mention the last time he visited Kansas City the back window of his towncar was ~mysteriously~ shot out in the local mob front’s parking lot. (So sue us for patronizing the mob front, they make REALLY GOOD SAUCE.) So. I sorta kinda knew mobsters, in a very loosely acquainted way, okay?
...although. I could not account for how exactly a Jersey mafioso had come to be opening locked car doors in the middle of the night in rural fucking Iowa, of all places. Suddenly, I remembered the movie The Goodfellas, and how Henry Hill, the guy Ray Liotta played in the movie (yes, it was based on a true story), had been arrested in North Platte the year before. I thought my brain would explode from sheer coincidence as Elise bounced up to him, giant jiggly cleavage and all, stuck out her hand like an idiot (dear god she was shaking hands with a mobster) and introduced him to her car.
He opened his bag and pulled out something that looked like a small fireplace bellows, and turned his back to the rest of us to work. I was still stuck, mouth hanging open like I was trying to catch one of the giant moths zipping around beneath the fluorescent lights, and there was a mobster working on Elise's car.
He was talking again, saying words I couldn't understand, made stupid by my own incredulity, then Elise was digging out her wallet and pulling out money, because the door was open, and the window was intact, and nothing was broken except, apparently, my brain.
I dug into my own back pocket for my wallet and grabbed the first bill I landed on, a less-than-crisp twenty, because that was what Elise was holding, and then grabbed another. I didn't know what the going rate was for paying a mob boss to break into your car, but I felt like maybe sixty dollars was a good bribe for eighty seconds of work and to please not kill us, and I stepped forward, hand and cash outstretched.
"Thank you for" not killing us "helping us out, sir!" I breathed, making sure to infuse the proper amount of respect into my voice. He had a driver, clearly he was Important, I'd seen The Godfather Part II, I knew it was a good idea to fucking comport oneself in these situations.
"Yeah, thanks, man!" Elise said loudly, in the most obnoxious voice imaginable, and clapped the mobster on the shoulder. Oh god.
"We're really, really grateful," I said, elbowing her discreetly in the left boob. She squealed like a bee-stung horse and jumped back. I clasped the mobster’s hand in both of mine as if he were the Pope and I needed that grace and said again, "Thank you, sir, thank you so, so much."
"Wasn't nothin' much, missy," the mobster said, but he was clearly pleased by the cash bribe, so I took another gamble. There was always a lot of kissing in the mob movies I’d seen, so I leaned forward and kissed the mobster on the left cheek, then the right, then the left again. I kissed the mobster, and I did not immediately die or get stabbed in the back or garrotted or shot, though the driver did rock on his heels and loom somehow taller and more disapprovingly than before.
I smiled as broadly as I could, forced my hands to let go of the mobster’s hand and stepped back slowly enough to be respectful but quickly enough not to be suspicious.
With no fanfare, the mobster nodded, as if satisfied by a good hit or a great cannoli or something, and turned on his heel and got back into his waiting car. The driver tipped a small salute with his forefinger, got into the car, started the engine, and drove away. I waited until the car was reduced to tiny red pinpricks of red taillights in the distance before I sighed out all the air in the quad state area and bent double to suck enough oxygen back in to laugh hysterically. Tears were streaming down my cheeks by the time I found the ability to straighten and stand, and I swiped at my eyes, careless of my dramatic eyeliner and mascara.
Elise winced away from me and rubbed exaggeratedly at the side of her boob. "Are you... okay?"
"Oh my god," I said. "You don't watch very many movies, do you?"
-
tl;dr don’t go on roadtrips with people you’ve never met, you might have to kiss a mob boss in BFE Iowa
hi tumblr I had a bad brain day and have work to do today who wants to gimme the stuff

200 Word RPG Challenge 2017 - My Favorite Finalists
For those of you who are unaware of what this is, every year since 2015 my friend David has orchestrated a “small” contest where people write and submit role playing systems consisting of only 200 words. This follows the principle of “constraints breed creativity” and has resulted in some beautiful nuggets of gameplay and design.
The 2017 challenge finalists have just been announced, and I thought I’d take time to talk about my favorites, in alphabetical order.
1. Memoriam Ignis
I have come across the idea before of madness as a limiting factor in a magical world - an explanation of why everyone doesn’t do everything with magic. However, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it so well encapsulated in mechanics as in this game.
2. Might Makes Right
A fantastic original idea for resolving conflicts. The only thing that’s more hilarious than arm wrestling your MM to decide the outcome of a conflict is doing it in order to “rescue a space gym from the Evil Beancounter Alliance.” The only problem I can see is that the MM might tire of arm wrestling much more quickly than the players, given that the MM has to take them all on.
3. Nightblind
Oh. My. Goodness. I must confess a penchant for games that let you lie to the other players, even if I may not be that good at them. Somehow, Nightblind manages to flawlessly put that mechanic next to some rich theming and storytelling hooks, all in 200 words. This is the game I want to play IRL the most.
4. The Human World
One player is a child exploring the (post-apocalyptic) world for the first time, the others are obsessive androids tasked with teaching the child about the world, but limited by their own personality traits, which eclipse all else for them. A powerful way to look at reductio ad absurdum in the context of a game. Also would be great to play on a road trip with friends.
5. VOICE
I disagree with the judge’s reading on this. To me it doesn’t look so focused on privilege. True, It can only experience the things the gods allow It to, but the gods themselves can only experience the world through Its sensations. The gods, though the ones in control of gifts, are as dependent on It as It is on them. Regardless of interpretation, however, VOICE is a masterclass of storytelling.
...oh, yeah, and I’m a finalist as well. Check it out!

Up and Coming Authors in Scandinavian Crime Fiction
Tumblr media
A longtime UBS executive, Timothy (Tim) Shields holds an MBA from Stanford University and focuses managerial efforts in areas such as portfolio-based financial services. When not meeting client demands at UBS, Tim Shields enjoys reading mystery novels, and he has a particular interest in Scandinavian crime fiction. Well-established authors within the burgeoning genre of “cold climate” crime fiction include Jo Nesbo and Henning Mankell, as well as Stieg Larsson, who catapulted the genre to worldwide prominence with the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Among the highly lauded up-and-coming authors are the authorial duo “Erik Axl Sund.” The original Swedish trilogy by Håkan Axlander Sundquist and Jerker Eriksson that earned them recognition was recently reprinted in English as a 750-page tome. Solidly in the Jo Nesbo vein, the work features Detective Superintendent Jeanette Kihlberg investigating a series of child murders that jeopardize her psychological wellbeing. An Icelandic newcomer is Ragnar Jonasson, who wowed critics with Snowblind and recently released Nightblind, which takes place five years earlier. The author draws on a background translating Agatha Christie novels in detailing the investigation of rookie detective Ari Thor Arason into murders within an isolated community. Timothy Shields’ favorite reads also include classics such as Willa Cather’s Death Comes for the Archbishop.
