On-Demand Delivery Services in Nigeria: Revolutionizing Logistics and Convenience
In the fast-paced world of today, the demand for quick, reliable, and efficient delivery services has skyrocketed. With Nigeria’s expanding e-commerce sector and the increasing preference for online shopping, on-demand delivery services are becoming a critical part of everyday life. Whether it’s groceries, food, or general courier services, Nigerians are leaning heavily on the convenience that these services bring to their doorsteps.
The Rise of On-Demand Delivery in Nigeria
On-demand delivery in Nigeria is reshaping the logistics landscape. With an increasing number of Nigerians embracing the convenience of home delivery, companies offering these services have flourished. From major cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, to smaller towns, the demand for fast, efficient delivery has created opportunities for businesses to cater to a vast and diverse customer base. The popularity of on-demand delivery has given rise to multiple platforms and apps, making it easier for consumers to access goods and services with just a few clicks.
Same-Day Delivery in Nigeria: Meeting Urgent Needs
Same-day delivery services have become a lifesaver for many Nigerians. Whether it's essential items like medicine or documents that need to be sent urgently, same-day delivery ensures that packages are transported swiftly. This type of service has become particularly important in bustling cities like Lagos, where traffic congestion can otherwise lead to delays in transportation.
Same-day delivery is a crucial offering for businesses, allowing them to serve customers more efficiently. This is particularly true for e-commerce platforms, where timely delivery plays a key role in customer satisfaction. With the development of reliable courier services across the country, companies can now offer same-day delivery, giving consumers confidence in quick and efficient service.
On-Demand Groceries in Nigeria
The demand for on-demand grocery delivery has exploded in Nigeria, especially in urban areas. With the growing hustle of everyday life, many consumers no longer have the time to visit traditional markets or supermarkets. On-demand grocery services provide an alternative, allowing consumers to order groceries online and have them delivered right to their door.
Many grocery delivery services in Nigeria have adopted mobile apps, making it easy for users to select items, track their orders, and get their deliveries within hours. In major cities like Lagos, the convenience of having groceries delivered saves time, reduces stress, and ensures that customers can quickly receive fresh produce, meats, and other essentials without leaving their homes.
Same-Day Food Delivery in Nigeria
Nigeria’s food delivery industry has experienced substantial growth in recent years, thanks to the rise of on-demand delivery apps. Same-day food delivery has become a norm in most Nigerian cities, offering customers the ability to order their favorite meals from restaurants and get them delivered within a short time. This trend has been boosted by the increasing use of delivery apps, which have become popular due to their convenience and efficiency.
Whether its fast food, traditional Nigerian dishes, or international cuisines, on-demand food delivery platforms offer a variety of choices to cater to different tastes. For restaurants, these platforms provide an opportunity to reach a broader customer base, while for consumers; they ensure that food is delivered fresh and hot, right at their doorstep.
The Growth of On-Demand Delivery Apps in Nigeria
With Nigeria’s increasing smartphone penetration, on-demand delivery apps have become a vital tool for accessing goods and services. These apps allow users to place orders, track deliveries in real time, and make payments, all from their mobile devices. Popular on-demand delivery apps in Nigeria cater to a variety of needs, from groceries and food to courier services.
Delivery apps in Lagos, the commercial hub of Nigeria, have particularly grown in popularity. The convenience they provide in navigating the city’s notorious traffic jams is one reason why more people are turning to on-demand apps. Some of the top on-demand delivery apps in Nigeria offer features such as same-day delivery, real-time order tracking, and secure payment options, making them an essential tool for both consumers and businesses.
Courier Services in Nigeria: Reliable and Fast
Courier services are an integral part of the delivery ecosystem in Nigeria. Whether for businesses or individuals, these services offer reliable transportation of packages, parcels, and documents. With the rise of on-demand courier services, sending and receiving items across cities or even nationwide has become faster and more efficient.
In major cities like Abuja and Lagos, on-demand courier companies have made it easy to send packages for same-day or next-day delivery. This has been beneficial for businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), that rely on quick and secure delivery to enhance their operations. For individuals, courier services offer a practical solution for delivering personal packages to friends, family, or colleagues.
Leading On-Demand Delivery Companies in Nigeria
Several on-demand delivery companies are thriving in Nigeria, offering innovative solutions that cater to the growing need for fast and reliable service. Companies like Gokada, Kwik Delivery, and Jumia have made it easier for Nigerians to access delivery services for a range of needs, from groceries to parcels and more. These companies have built strong reputations by providing efficient, on-demand solutions and have helped to drive the growth of e-commerce and other sectors reliant on logistics.
Conclusion: The Future of On-Demand Delivery in Nigeria
As Nigeria’s economy continues to grow and evolve, the demand for on-demand delivery services will only increase. The convenience, efficiency, and speed that these services provide have made them a key part of daily life for many Nigerians. From same-day food delivery to essential courier services, these platforms are changing how businesses operate and how consumers access goods and services.
Looking ahead, the future of on-demand delivery in Nigeria will likely involve more innovation, improved logistics, and better integration with emerging technologies like drone deliveries and AI-powered route optimization. With this transformation underway, Nigeria is poised to continue as a major hub for on-demand delivery in Africa.

E-commerce in Africa: Call for More Players!
Overview of E-commerce in Africa
Africa, with its youthful and second-largest population globally, is witnessing a surge in its e-commerce sector. The proliferation of smartphones and mobile devices has fueled increased internet penetration, leading to the rise of mobile e-commerce. Notable platforms like Kenya’s Wasoko, Nigeria’s Jumia, and South Africa’s Takealot, among others, are expanding digital payment options, redefining traditional supply chains, and innovating business models.
Market Projections and Potential
The e-commerce market in Africa is poised for substantial growth, with an estimated online retail revenue of $49.02 billion in 2023. Forecasts indicate a user base of 609.3 million by 2027. Despite credit card rarity, alternative payment methods like cash-on-delivery and mobile money are gaining traction, contributing to steady growth. The Pan African Payment Settlement System (PAPSS) emerges as a solution, potentially challenging global giants and fostering economic growth, job opportunities, and improved access to goods and services.
Major Players Shaping the E-commerce in Africa
Diverse Platforms and Competitive Dynamics
Kenya’s Twiga Foods, Egypt’s MaxAB, and Zimbabwe’s Fresh in a Box exemplify the diversity within Africa’s e-commerce landscape. Jumia’s inclusion on the New York Stock Exchange and AliExpress incorporating Kenya’s MPesa highlight the competitive nature of the market. With over 30 million monthly mobile subscriptions in Kenya utilizing MPesa, there’s a significant user base, intensifying competition.
Tech Investment Opportunities
Africa’s status as the second-highest growing regional economy, coupled with the rapid increase in online business adoption driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, positions the continent as a prime location for tech companies. Technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), play a pivotal role, enhancing operational efficiency and contributing to a personalized shopping experience.
Empowering African SMEs to Adopt Ecommerce

Nigerian Government Initiatives and Support
The Nigerian government actively supports SME adoption of e-commerce through initiatives like the National Digital Economy Policy & Strategy (NDEPS) and the National Broadband Plan (NBP). These plans promote infrastructure development, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship, aiming for 70% broadband penetration by 2025. Government initiatives also include startup hubs, e-government services, and the National Identification Number (NIN) project for improved access to services. While challenges like rural connectivity and workforce skills remain, Nigeria’s commitment to digitalization puts it on a path to unlock e-commerce’s potential for its SMEs.
Nigeria’s E-commerce Landscape: Market Size and Growth

Despite significant sales during events like Black Friday, challenges such as server downtimes and product shortages underscore the market’s potential to accommodate more players, particularly those addressing local needs.
Tech Essentials for Foreign Ecommerce to Enter Africa
Intricately stepping into the realm of e-commerce in Africa demands foreign players to strategically embrace the continent’s unique technological landscape. A paramount focus lies in cloud technology, serving as the bedrock for success. Scalable, reliable cloud infrastructure is crucial for establishing a robust presence. It enables seamless scalability, efficient data management, and enhanced website performance to cater to the rising tide of online shoppers. Moreover, optimizing for mobile experiences is imperative, given the prevalence of smartphones in the region. Bookstores in Nigeria
If you're looking for books in Nigeria, you can find some of the best deals online. However, before ordering your favourite books, consider the cost of the book, the quality of the book, and the delivery time. You can also check out the books that are available at various bookstores in Nigeria. In addition, you can order online if you don't have a chance to visit a store.
One of the largest cities in Nigeria, Lagos, is home to numerous bookstores. Here, you can get the latest in fiction and non-fiction, including titles written by African authors. Moreover, you can get books for all ages. There are also children's books and cookbooks. It's easy to purchase books online and have them delivered to your doorstep.
The BookMarket is one of the leading bookstores in the country. They have books on a wide range of subjects, including fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and literature. They are also known for organizing events to promote books and book culture. For instance, they organize four 'Books and Food' joints in the country. Currently, they are expanding to other cities.
Another bookstore in the city of Lagos is the Jazzhole, which specializes in literary works, music, and biographies of prominent figures, such as Fela Kuti and Venice. Customers can enjoy free bookmarks with their purchases.
Patabah Bookstore is another independent store that stocks African literature. This store has a physical location in the Adeniran Ogunsanya mall in Surulere. They have a large selection of books that cover a wide range of topics, including fiction, biography, and religion. They also offer gift items. Additionally, they offer a convenient payment option through KongaPay.
Another bookstore that has been around since 1999 is the Nigerian Bookseller. Their website offers a wide range of books on different subjects, including politics, history, religion, science, and technology. They also offer delivery services, which can be purchased with a debit card or through their social media platforms.
The Ake Arts and Book Festival is one of the biggest literary events in the country. They host several literary festivals throughout the year, and their goal is to improve the society through reading and writing. Several famous Nigerian authors participate in this festival, including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Lola Shoneyin, and Tabia Princewill.
Despite these challenges, some Bookstores in Nigeria are still thriving. As a matter of fact, the bookseller in Ibadan, Jemiyo Ariyo, has been working in the company for eleven years and has observed a dramatic decrease in the sale of fiction. But the big question is how to solve the problem of distribution? Perhaps, the solution could be a branch of the informal sector, which could involve smaller stalls in local markets or a more robust network of bookstores.
Although the book industry has been struggling in Nigeria, the country has produced some of the most acclaimed literary icons in the world. For example, Nigerian authors like Wole Soyinka and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

"Understanding Africa’s $180B internet economy future"
Genetic scientists study human DNA to better understand medical conditions and how to treat diseases. But their research is often based on samples that don’t actually reflect the world’s population. Around 80 percent of the human DNA used in genetic studies is from people of European descent. This means that researchers are often unable to study and address conditions that affect global ethnicities.
In January 2019, Abasi Ene-Obong, a young tech engineer from Nigeria, founded 54gene with the aim of making gene studies more representative by increasing access to African genomic data—which currently accounts for less than 3 percent of all genetic data sets. After securing two rounds of funding, 54gene has gone on to complete a fully resourced biobank in Lagos, crucial to support academic research, drug development, and disease detection.
Ene-Obong’s story is just one example of how talented African entrepreneurs are creating new opportunities across the continent. As a new report from Google and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) shows, the startup ecosystem is helping drive Africa’s internet economy towards a projected value of $180 billion by 2025, or 5.2 percent of the continent’s GDP.
We collaborated on the report—titled ”e-Conomy Africa 2020: Africa’s $180 billion internet economy future”—to highlight the strengths and challenges of the internet economy today, and to better understand where it might go in the future. Here are some other things we learned.
Startups in Africa are progressing and reaching new milestones
According to Partech Ventures Africa, African tech startups reached a new milestone in 2019 with $2.02 billion of equity funding raised. That’s 74 percent more than in 2018, and represents an average deal size of $8.08 million.
At the forefront of the internet economy’s growth are startups in sectors like financial technology (fintech), e-commerce, health, e-logistics, e-mobility and food delivery. Fintech leads the way in terms of funding, receiving 54 percent of all African startup investment in 2019. This indicates high investor trust, which is significant given the sector’s important role serving unbanked and financially excluded Africans.
One example is the Nigerian digital payments and commerce platform Interswitch, which received $200 million in equity funding from Visa in 2019, as well an IFC investment of $10.5 million. These investments came at a time of big growth for the electronics payment market, and, as a result, Interswitch has helped transform the infrastructure of Nigeria’s banking system, while extending its services to 23 other countries.
E-commerce startups have also shown strong growth, thanks to improved digital payment services and a rise in mobile technology and payment channels. In 2019, e-commerce accounted for $134 million in funding across 30 deals--a 36 percent increase in the number of deals compared with 2018. With COVID-19-mandated lockdowns in countries across the continent, consumers have quickly gotten much more used to e-commerce, and their new online shopping behavior may well extend beyond the pandemic.
Young developer talent is shaping the future
The African developer scene boasts 700,000 professional software developers, many of them trained through university programs, others self-taught.
There’s an enormous amount of talent, but these developers need help to find jobs and take their ideas forward.
Coding classes, like those offered by Google, Decagon, Gebeya and others, are helping close knowledge and skills gaps, while professional communities continue to grow. There are more than 160 active Google Developer Groups and 200 Developer Student Clubs in Sub-Saharan Africa, offering training and support to help developers meet job requirements. And since its launch in 2018, theGoogle for Startups Accelerator Africa program has worked with 47 startups from 17 African countries—helping them develop products and build successful companies and products. One of the 2016 global accelerator graduates, Nigerian fintech startup Paystack, was recently acquired by Stripe for over $200 million.
IFC is also playing its part to advance digital skills development, making investments in regional startups and accelerators that cultivate tech talent. Gebeya—a company IFC supports in Ethiopia—has trained over 500 young software developers, most of whom are women, and is providing seed funding to 30 graduates to pursue their own digital ventures. IFC investee Flat6Labs is fostering tech entrepreneurship (and women entrepreneurs in particular) by directing early stage funding to startups in both Egypt and Tunisia.
Whether it's helping startups grow, training developers or providing tools for small businesses, both Google and IFC are committing to bringing the benefits of technology to millions more people across this extraordinary continent. We invite you to read the report and learn more about the opportunities unfolding throughout Africa’s thriving internet economy.

NCC Vows To Promote Vigorous ICT Infrastructure
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has vowed to vigorously to promote and facilitate expansion of broadband and related Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure to expedite economic growth across the country.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the federal government Agency, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta gave the assurance in a presentation titled “Communication Technology for Service Delivery in Health, Education, Tourism, the Creative Industry and Agriculture” delivered during the first virtual and sixth edition of Information Communications Technology and Telecommunications Conference and Exhibition (ICTEL) EXPO 2020.
He said the Commission, not only successfully achieved but surpassed the 30 per cent broadband penetration target in 2018. Danabatta observed that through various policy initiatives, broadband penetration has further increased to 42.02 per cent as of July, 2020, noting that this has laid a solid foundation to drive the national efforts at achieving the new 70 per cent broadband penetration target set in the Nigeria National Broadband Plan (NNBP) 2020-2025.
Represented by the Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, NCC, Efosa Idehen, Danbatta said in line with this commitment, the Commission has commenced the review of the framework for engaging infrastructure companies to cascade fibre optic deployment to the hinterlands of Nigeria to ensure pervasive access to broadband services in the country.
He stated that with the support of the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, NCC is resolving the perennial problem of high cost of Right of Way (RoW) with the support of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) to hasten ICT infrastructure that will enable socio-economic activities across various sectors.
According to him, as the world is becoming increasingly digitised; there will be no sector or facet of human life where ICT will not be required for optimal service delivery and improved conditions of living for the citizens.
With regard to the health sector, Danbatta said ICT is playing a very important role in the manner health services are now delivered, adding that the new Internet speed and low latency of 5G technology are expected to further enhance the possibilities of telemedicine and remote surgery.
Similarly, the EVC said the educational sector has also greatly soared on the wings of ICT, as there has been a surge in online learning in many institutions around the globe due to the raging COVID-19 pandemic, while illustrating the symbiotic relationship between ICT and educational sectors.
Danbatta said “the relationship between ICT and the educational sector has been mutually beneficial. He assured the stakeholders that the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expected to enhance the capabilities of the educational sector even further.”
According to him, the agricultural sector has also benefitted from ICT, as several agro-based apps have been designed to ensure that stakeholders in the sector are able to provide and improve on essential agro-services. These developments have helped to boost food production and security, just as a lot of digitisation is also holding sway in the creative industry, enhancing its growth thereby enabling job creation and greater contribution to the Gross Domestic product (GDP).

Best Online delivery services - ShapShap
The rise of digital technology is reshaping the market and changing the way we interact with businesses. With the advent of online shopping and goods delivery, consumers are more accustomed to ordering the products that they need from the comfort of their own homes. Online delivery services make the process of shopping for commodities much simpler through their apps and websites which offer maximum convenience and transparency. It is no wonder then, that customers want the same convenience and efficiency when ordering food online also.
We, at ShapShap, found that in Nigeria less than 10% of formal restaurants offer food deliveries and the demand for same-day delivery is significantly higher than the supply. Also, over 95% of door-to-door deliveries in Nigeria are booked on call and only a handful utilize accurate per km billing methods and provide live tracking through an app. Of all these bookings, less than 10% are actually able to provide same-day delivery.
Here, we found an opportunity to provide a fast, technology-driven solution for food vendors. So, we have developed a mobile application for all Nigerians from where you can order for fast and safe delivery of food, medicines, groceries, and documents with live tracking, accurate costing, optional insurance, door-to-door delivery and much more. We, at ShapShap, know that 76% of web browsing in Nigeria occurs on mobile phones and so have come up with a food delivery solution for everyone that they can access through their mobile phones. Download the ShapShap app today to get access to quick, door-to-door delivery solutions! Visit - https://shapshap.com
