Scientists have known for some time that the classic Turing mechanism probably can’t occur in a system as noisy and complicated as the brain. But a collaborator of Cowan’s, the physicist Nigel Goldenfeld of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, has proposed a twist on the original idea that factors in noise. Experimental evidence reported in two recent papers has bolstered the theory that this “stochastic Turing mechanism” is behind the geometric form constants people see when they hallucinate. But why do we see the particular shapes that Klüver so meticulously classified? The widely accepted explanation proposed by Cowan, Ermentrout and their collaborators is that these patterns result from how the visual field is represented in the first visual area of the visual cortex. “If you opened up someone’s head and looked at the activity of the nerve cells, you would not see an image of the world as through a lens,” said Peter Thomas, a collaborator of Cowan’s who is now at Case Western Reserve University. Instead, Thomas explained, the image undergoes a transformation of coordinates as it is mapped onto the cortex. If neuronal activity takes the form of alternating stripes of firing and non-firing neurons, you perceive different things depending on the stripes’ orientation. You see concentric rings if the stripes are oriented one way. You see rays or funnel shapes emanating from a central point — the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel common in near-death experiences — if the stripes are perpendicular to that. And you see spiral patterns if the stripes have a diagonal orientation.

How does music therapy help heal trauma-affected children?

I think from the commencement of my interest in Hindustani Classical Music, I was keen in the effect it had, why it let me feel the way it did. Well ahead, I decided on to performing in untried settings and contexts - so we played in hospitals, psychiatric centres, schools and all kinds of situations where we felt that the experience was actually transforming. I have begun understanding music as something that could have a collective mission. I saw how influential music could be personally, socially, rationally and even politically.

Does Hindustani Classical Music offer something special in this regard?

Hindustani Classical Music is chiefly powerful in therapeutic processes since in my opinion it incorporates the entire human evolution and the whole of our individual development in it, in the manner the raga is established. For instance, the drone and the saa is not just one note, but it covers all. The entire vocal sequence - the normal behavior of proportionally pulsating objects - is existent in that. That's why in learning Hindustani Classical Music, we utilize lot of time in singing just “saa”. It is a note that has no start and end. It covers and encloses our consciousness. We become enwrapped in it. That's just the start.

When the aalaap commences, these kinds of movements have a standard impact on the brain cells and they re-count to a very historic form of communication between humans which existed before language. Then, we move to the eventual refined kind of note structure which is chosen up by the advanced cognitive functions of the brain. Our emotions get sculpted by these. Lastly, rhythm in Indian classical music excites the most basic in addition to higher cognitive areas and fuels the motor cortex. There is a great level of intellection and design, which are as much cerebral as they are emotional.

Music is a medium of engaging human empathy. Can you please explain? We develop empathy mainly via the means of sound, voice and music. 'Communicative musicality' looks at the relationships and communication amid mothers and small babies across the globe. We learned somewhat parallel patterns having the qualities of music. This is the primary communication of empathy, perhaps more influential than touch. So Indian Classical Music begins very early in our lives as a medium of communicating emotion.

Where do you consider this therapy to be utilized most successfully in India?

To utilize more of it in special education would be a noble idea. Then definitely, I would like to see Hindustani Classical Music more in hospitals & wellness centres. This will be quite beneficial for smooth healing of patients suffering physically and mentally.

An apathetic husk of His former self, Dark!Nigel wants nothing to do with His former life or identity and has made it His life's mission to erase any and all memory of Cortex & Tropy. Normally disaffected and eerily calm, He flies into a mindless rage should He ever be reminded of who or what He used to be. This includes His own reflection, which He will destroy instantly on reflex. His first act as a true individual was to violently rip out the dial on his forehead which served as a reminder of Nigel's fusion status. The resulting wound never healed and continues to bleed, as if His own body's inherent magic is condemning Him, passing judgment for what He did. Dark!Nigel retains all His fusion powers, like immortality, super-strength, super-speed and electricity-generation since He never attained true humanity, but rather stayed in an "empty fusion" state. Likes: People who make an effort to listen to/understand Him, discussing existential philosophy, patience (curiously He always ends up befriending/FWB-ing any and all of N. Skin, wounds, and failure for any OC you want~?

I only have Nigel N. Fuse (the Crash Bandicoot fusion OC of Cortex and Tropy), so here goes...

skin: How comfortable is your OC in their skin? Do they grapple with anything that lives inside them—a beast, a curse, a failure, a monster? How do they face the smallest, weakest, most horrible version of themself? Are they able to acknowledge it at all?

He's incredibly uncomfortable with the whole 'being a fusion of two people who hate each other' thing. He can almost never get a moment's rest. Where do they end and he truly begin? Are they even extricable or is his personhood ultimately always tied to theirs? Should he value his own interests over theirs or respect theirs first, since they were here before him and deserve to exist even more than him? He has so many questions, most of which he is scared to voice. He is terrified of being selfish, because of what he might become if he defiles the sanctity of his head-mates' already limited autonomy. (in bad timelines Nigel literally becomes a murderer in order to be free)

wound: How does your OC handle being wounded? Are their wounds mostly physical? Mental? Emotional? What's the worst wound your OC has ever experienced?

He's practically immortal as a fusion, he can't get sick or die from injury. He can be wounded and bleed, but his reactions to it are pretty muted (he doesn't need his organs, he's kept alive by fusion-magic). If someone were to stab him he'd just look at the knife in his chest and then at his attacker like "well, that's a bit rude..." Mentally, he's always being worn down by the voices (snide comments or heated arguments he didn't ask to be privy to), but mostly he's vulnerable to EMOTIONAL DAMAGE TT_TT He cares a lot about the opinions and feelings of those he's close to, and he's always worried people won't respect/acknowledge him as his own person if he 'comes out' as a fusion. He desperately wishes he could live a life of complete authenticity, but his self-preservation holds him back.

failure: What's your OC's greatest failure? Have they been able to move past it? Does anyone else know about it?

He hasn't really existed long enough to be faced with a major decision he feels he screwed up, so it's one of those questions that don't really apply to his unique situation. On a narrative level, his insistence that Cortex and Tropy's issues aren't his problem counts as a character flaw. While he's right, in a perfect world their problems shouldn't concern him, they do technically affect him too. Nigel's need to help others spitefully stops short of Cortex and Tropy, and thus he isn't helping to sort out their differences (which would benefit them all in the long run).

Nigel loves playing therapist, except for the TWO people who could probably need it the most right now, since they're being dicks about it and making his life miserable. Nigel is kind and usually patient, but very petty if you test him, and he wants as little to do as possible with those two.

Pretend your OC Nigel is in Wumpa League. If his different halves were picked to be on opposite teams, how would that work? Would he just cease to exist?

Assuming you can only have one of each (not multiple ones implied to be from alternate dimensions/timelines) I think in my head the character selection would lock him out if either Cortex or Tropy are chosen and vice versa.

Alternatively, if Cortex and Tropy are on the same team they could briefly turn INTO Nigel as a sort of ultimate move (in which case he would only be a situational character rather than a selectable one).

But idk how these types of games work, gonna be honest xD

That's due to a personal headcanon I have about N. Tropy (I explained in a hc dump once)

hasn’t officially yet, but in time he’s the type to collect playbills from musicals (whether he’s seen them or not). As of now he’s using Cortex and Tropy’s bank accounts to buy the one for The Spongebob Musical on ebay >:3c

Cortex

I always pictured having a whole bunch of old vinyl records stashed away in an underwear drawer somewhere. A lot of 60′s and 70′s albums. Owns a travel record-player in bright orange to play them on.

N. Tropy

well I mean clocks would be the obvious answer, so Iet’s focus on something less obvious. I picture him considering his horology tools more of a collection than any watchworks themselves. Especially the highly specialized ones, like mainspring winders or balance wheel screw adjusters.

N. Gin

I picture little animal figurines he’s made himself. He makes them out of bent metal scraps. He tried paper origami first, but they proved too delicate to survive his working conditions. I can picture him making crude sculptures out of nuts and bolts in the past, but gradually stopped since he could tell it made Brio uncomfortable.

is a bit of a wild card in my head, that man could collect ANYTHING and it wouldn’t surprise me. I‘m gonna take a sad route here and picture him collecting family stock photos that come with the picture frame when you buy it. When he’s feeling down he brings them out and looks at them, imagining a life in which he knows these people as friends and family that care about him.
