btw friend, I feel like folks see that Tennessee is ranked 19 and automatically think this is a big loss so I need to set some perspective.
In reality, this Tennessee team is ranked higher than a lot of teams UConn faced in the past via the SRS Ranking (#9 this year based on this rating that accounts for margin of victory and strength of schedule)
This year's competition actually might just be tougher in general than it has ever been. I am going to put the SRS number in the order from 1) Paige's freshman year to 5) current season. Typically speaking 30+ is incredibly good. 45+ is insanity level of good aka South Carolina.
I'm going to list the number in this order.
Paige's Freshman Year - NPOY
Azzi's Freshman Year (both had injuryies) - National Championship Run
Paige's ACL + Azzi's Knee Injury
Azzi's ACL + Paige playing point forward
Current Season - Sarah Strong arrives - PSA
First the number of teams above 30+ each year
9 <- Paige NPOY, Final Four Loss
5 <- National Championship Run
7 <- Sweet Sixteen Loss
11 <- Last season 7 player run to Final Four
18 <- Current season
18 teams are 30+ in SRS currently!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE. It is like the scale of excellence is shifting upwards tremendously or maybe it is a reflection that anyone can manifest a huge upset. I imagine once we enter March this will dwindle down. But as of now, these is an insane year of talent.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now I am going to breakdown some teams that UConn has faced and their general trends before ending with UConn.
South Carolina is just dominant standout in the last few years and just gets better. South Carolina has been number 1 ranked from 2 to 5 on this list so that gives you a benchmark.
34.84 <- Paige's win in her freshman year
38.46 <- National Championship won against UConn
44.26 <- Loss to Iowa in Final Four (huge upset)
45.27 <- National Championship won against Iowa
45.29 <- Current season, since loss to UCLA have gone undefeated
Stanford went absolutely downhill. Kind of sad to see because I loved this team and picked them to win when they won.
42.26 <- Stanford won the Natty
34.68 <- Ugliest Final Four game loss to UConn
33.91 <- Second Round Loss
33.90 <- Sweet 16 Loss
18.31 (current season)
Notre Dame has skyrocketed and part of that is recruitment and getting Miles back from injury. Niele Ivey took over in Paige's freshman year. They have had sweet sixteen losses thus far. It should be noted that Azzi has yet to play a full game against Notre Dame.
14.91 <- Olivia Miles, Maddy Westbald recruited, no tournament
25.05 <- Sonia Citron recruited, UConn wins first match up but Paige and Azzi didn't play
29.65 <- Beat UConn (Azzi injures her knee at the beginning, Paige ACL)
32.26 <- Olivia Miles and Azzi Fudd ACL, Hannah Hidalgo recruited, Beat UConn
40.39 <- Liatu King joins, Miles and Hidalgo finally playing together, Beat UConn
NC State is all over the place.
27.79
35.12 <- Elite Eight 2OT game
24.93<- Azzi's 32 point game
30.41 <- UConn's loss to NC State
27.76
Texas has risen in the same way as Notre Dame and the year Azzi went off on them, they were nothing compared to right now. The year UConn lost to them, they were so much better too.
22.58
29.34
29.59 <- Azzi's 32 point game
36.47 <- UConn's loss to Texas (post Azzi ACL tear)
42.98
Iowa rose higher and higher with Caitlin Clark and her class that played together for nearly all those years. And now that they are gone, they have dropped. Despite this, the just upset USC. Anything can happen! By the way, this is why I rank Azzi's game against Iowa higher than all others. But Azzi also doesn't have anyone set her up to hit those shots consistently like Aaliyah and Nika and others would do.
24.31 <- Sweet sixteen loss to UConn
26.07 <- Iowa second round loss to Creighton
33.25 <- Hello third Q Azzi Fudd, Iowa loses to LSU (35.14) Final
37.05 <- UConn Loss in Final Four, Iowa loses to SC (45.27) Final
25.44 <- Just upset USC
Tennessee is very different from Azzi's freshman year when she went 7 of 9. This is the best they have been in a LONG time.
23.80 <- Paige's bad game with the big shot to win it
24.52 <- Azzi Fudd master class
28.66 <- Won w/o Paige or Azzi
24.54
34.51 <- UConn loss for the first time in this era of rivalry games
USC is on a rise that is also absolutely insane with Juju + new recruits but again, not South Carolina level yet.
14.47
12.79
22.21
30.21 <- Elite Eight, Freshman Juju vs Paige
39.04 <- UConn loss for the first time, just upset by Iowa
UCLA has been rebuilding and growing tremendously as well.
31.97
18.09
24.93 <-Kiki Rice joins
34.00 <-Lauren Betts transfers in, UConn loss to UCLA, this was right when Azzi tore her ACL
39.89 <- Beat South Carolina, undefeated currently
UConn
These aren't major blow out losses like what happened last year when everyone was scrambling after Azzi tore her ACL and then Aubrey and all of sudden we had Paige as a point forward to help stabilize the team and no one had rest on the bench.
Yes these losses suck but look at the SRS ranking of the teams we have lost to this year and by how much. They just have to clean things up. They have yet to play cleanly against any of the ranked teams.
But despite these losses, look at where they are in SRS. The ceiling is VERY HIGH with this team.
38.87 <- Paige's NPOY, Final Four Upset to Arizona (30.95)
32.74 <- National Championship Loss with half a Paige and Azzi
34.04 <- Paige's ACL, Azzi's Knee; Sweet 16 Loss
37.65 <- Final Four run with 7 on the bench, major losses to UCLA (34), Texas (36.47), Notre Dame (32.26), South Carolina (45.27) and Iowa (37.05)
40.89 <- Current Losses to Notre Dame (40.39), USC (39.04), and Tennessee (34.51)
In summary, stop panicking. Have some faith that they can learn from this like they did last year. The season is meant to troubleshoot. I would rather they make mistakes now and get it out of their system.
P.S. BUT ALSO MAKE YOUR GOD DAMN LAY UPS AND SET SCREENS TO GET AZZI OPEN FROM THREE BECAUSE I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.
The sheer talent in each of these teams is unbelievable, it's getting better and better.
Everyone listen to the boss and stop panicking.

It really is UConn/Paige's natty to lose this season.
Cause at the end of the day:
Notre Dame - if they get to their first Final 4 in the Niele Ivey era and their first since 2019, that's gonna be good enough for most.
USC - if they get to their first Final 4 since 1986, that's good enough.
UCLA - if they get to their first Final 4 in program history, that's good enough.
USC - they just won and had an undefeated season in a year that people said they would be "rebuilding" - they're ok, no pressure on them to win one this season.
For UConn though - You have three #1 recruits? Most of your team are 5-star recruits/Top 25 recruits in their respective classes? You better win that natty. I know it sounds cutthroat, but that's the UConn standard and these players knew that when they committed. Now they gotta live up to it. And I sincerely hope they do 🙏
Still feels like no one has them winning it aside from UConn fans tho. I don’t think the program as a whole feels that pressure rn. I think Paige does/will. The pressure will start to really hit them as a team when it really sinks that this is Paige’s last shot I think.

Yeah Sonia played fantastically, and Maddie is a huge missing piece for them. Liza Karlen (Marquette transfer) would also help with their depth.
That’s why I found it funny that that Twitter account was trying to throw hits at Paige and azzi (who’ve endured a bunch of injuries) when HH and miles aren’t completely settled yet. HH needs to be moved more off ball and let miles run pg, bc while Hidalgo starts doing random shit, miles plays a lot more composed, so let one follow the others lead. But Ivey isn’t doing that, or at least not yet…..
Liatu King has also been solid for ND, great hustle. Overall they have some time to figure it out, especially once they get healthy again, but I’m excited to see how they fare against Texas. Bc Texas is a big team and has bodies, ND doesn’t have the same luxury….
I will say that I feel like Sonia has been the most consistent piece for Niele since she’s been there
I also really dislike the fact that hannah brings up the ball when Olivia is on the court like obviously it doesn’t happen every time, but those are not two point guards. They are a shooting guard and a point guard who can score but probably would much rather facilitate sometimes. also, like you said, Olivia does play more composed and I kind of hate the fact that Niele let hannah play so wild last year knowing that Olivia was going to be coming back and to me their playing styles do not mesh.
Liatu has been a good addition, but Koval is going to have to be able to score especially once they start conference play because the ACC is not easy and at any given night the top team can lose.
