A Woman Who Wins
It's always a lovely day when you get to read a 4,000+ word review essay of HILD and MENEWOOD in the New York Review of Books! Nicole Rudick had interesting things to say—mostly complimentary. And there's a painted portrait of me in an abbey graveyard...

For one, it’s been a while since anyone has illustrated me for a print publication (this one was by Leah Reena Goren; the last time was in the Wall Street Journal,…

Extended credits for Museum at Tomorrow episode 5
Below the cut are all of the folks who I used (and asked to be credited) for recordings in Museum at Tomorrow episode 5- specifically, the "This is not for You" recordings.
(The list was too long for podcast episode descriptions)
These recordings were mixed into the soundscape of the show, heavily processed- so you may or may not be able to pick out your voice. Each unique recording is preserved as rhythem, timber, and shape within the episode.
Thank you for your work in creating the canvas of this piece.

WIG REVIEW: WHO IS AMERICA?
Gurl, Sacha Baron Cohen is BACK. And Republicans are sooooo sadzzzz about being “duped” by him in “disguise” and looking exactly like themselves on TV. HERE’S THE THING: Sacha Baron Cohen wears lots of wigs and prosthetics in this show to disguise and fool people into thinking he’s someone else. None of them are very good. Truly, he barely looks like a human person in any of these lewks. So if anything, everyone should be very ashamed of themselves for not being able to spot wigs and prosthetics walking around in real life an not in the realm of an early aughts Eddie Murphy movie.
Disclaimer: for the most part, I usually don’t review wigs that are out and about in real life (John Travolta and Nicole Kidman’s wiggy red carpet lewks are rarely discussed here) HOWEVER, though Cohen is wearing these wigs in “real life”, he is portraying people on a TV show that are trying to pass wigs off as real hair so I’m going for it. LET’S DISCUSS:
We first meet Billy Wayne Ruddick, the epitome of a Tea Party/truther/fake news nutjob who is on a motorized scooter to talk to Bernie Sanders about Obamacare and how to mathematically become the 1%. Sure. Truly, if there was ever going to be a white Klumps movie, THIS IS IT. Those prosthetic jowels, that tattered wig, those horrible bushy beard pieces. NO GURL. Bernie takes it as it is, and we all know that his morning ablutions are rolling into a giant wrinkled suit BUT STILL.
We move on to Dr. Nira Cain-N’Degeocello who is the one liberal character and I suppose Cohen’s attempt at equal representation but is straight up the worst character with definitely the worst wig.
Although Cohen’s comedy is mostly sharply politically satiric, he is often just a series of awkward potty jokes that I honestly have to leave the room to avoid. This whole segment was basically that. But also I had to run screaming from that bald cap/neck prosthetics/fright wig ponytail combo of horror. I know the lighting is dim in this old Skeleton Key-style plantation that these people rattle around in but if you can’t see that Cohen is under a vortex of makeup and fake hair, then truly: the joke is on you.
Wait, I take it back - this character might be the worst. Meet Rick Sherman, an English ex-con and “artist” who makes paintings out of poo. Yes, the scatological humor is at peak Cohen here and I just CAN’T YOU GUYS. But also - LOOK AT THAT FAKE NOSE AND THAT BALD CAP AND THAT HORRIBLE BEARD.
To be fair, he was meeting with this “art gallery lady” (I use quotes because???) and the only word I can use to describe her entire look/personality is: THIRSTY. So I guess it would be easy for her to be fooled by that thirsty ass beard?!?!?!
Finally, we meet Colonel Erran Morad, an Israeli gun enthusiast whose lewk absolutely gave me the shivers. This may be the best wig (simply because it is the shortest and therefore isn’t given the opportunity to look thirsty or upsetting). But the prosthetics are THE MOST UPSETTING. This character is closest to how Cohen looks in real life so I can only describe this lewk as: BEYOND THE UNCANNY VALLEY.
This segment works the best because he gets NRA idiots to go along with his toddler gun training video and show just how insane they are. But it also is the most upsetting to me because NONE OF THEM QUESTIONED THE FACT THAT HE DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A HUMAN PERSON.
In the end, this show works in pointing out just how awful and dumb Americans can be which I assume was the point, but to me, it truly showed how awful Americans are at spotting a wig. FOR SHAME.
VERDICT: DOESN’T WURQ
