“Hear me Odin, allfather of the gods. Summon the shadows of the past when the thread spinning norns ruled the fates of men. Hear of a princes vengence quenched at the fiery gates of Hell. A prince destined for Valhöll.”

"WHEN DESIGNING NICOLE'S COSTUMES... I ASKED, "WHAT DO YOU THINK MIGHT HAVE MADE A VIKING WOMAN FEEL SEXY?"
PIC(S) INFO: Resolution at 2000×3000 -- Mega spotlight on Australian-American film actress Nicole Kidman as Queen Gudrún in "The Northman" (2022). 📸: Aidan Monaghan / Courtesy of Focus Features.
""I was talking to [archaeologist and historical consultant on "The Northman"] Neil Price about Viking women when designing Nicole’s costumes, and I asked, for instance, "What do you think might have made a Viking woman feel sexy?"" Muir recalls. “And he kind of laughed and said, "No one has ever asked me that before."" To bring the Viking world to vivid, full-fleshed life, however, it’s exactly the kind of question the job required. Here, Muir tells "Vogue" about the difficulties — and the unexpected delights—of her extraordinary work on "The Northman.""

The Northman (2022)

The Northman is the third feature from director Robert Eggers (known for The Lighthouse and The Witch), which follows the Viking Prince Amleth on a mission to avenge his father, who was brutally murdered when he was young.
As someone who has never seen an Eggers film and knows very little about Vikings, I went into this completely blind, yet came away extremely impressed. What I had feared would be a cold, overly-long epic instead turned out to be closer to a more psychological, horrifying exploration of how an unyielding desire for power and vengeance can turn brutal. It is a shame the film was largely overlooked, both at the box office and in terms of critical acclaim, particularly related to end-of-season awards (whether you think they matter or not, they do help to preserve a film's future legacy).
Yet I believe and hope this film has the potential to become a cult classic, wholly due to Eggers' complete perfectionism and historical accuracy. From a technical perspective, the film is near flawless: for such a dark and unwelcoming setting, each shot feels so cinematic in scope that it remains engaging throughout. The score fits its purpose of providing a constant, brooding tone, although I'm not sure I'll be actively listening to it any time soon.
Most importantly, though, the film feels like such a rich text, full of symbolism that could be analysed at an academic level (which I do not have the will or brain power to do). It is a classic Shakespearean tale of power and revenge with a lingering presence of a supernatural element, drawing on traditional Norse folk tales (I am presuming).
Still, despite some scenes that take considerable artistic merit, particularly as Prince Amleth transcends into spiritual realms, the film remains a fundamentally good blockbuster, with a universal tale told through thrilling action sequences and a tighter runtime of 137 than other movies of a similar nature. I truly regret not seeing this on a big screen and being able to feel an even more intense dread than I did watching this on my student TV on a Wednesday evening.
Directors are rarely allowed to make films of such a scale, particularly for a third feature, and The Northman genuinely feels like something unique in the current movie climate, where original large-scale projects that can maintain this much artistic merit are few and far between. Despite moments where I felt little emotional connection to the film, I am simply pleased by its existence and pure quality and excited to eventually check out whatever Eggers plans to do in future.
