I stare at the sketch. It’s an onion. My gaze slips off the paper and onto the boy slumped against the city’s wall. 

“I’m so sorry,” I whisper, and turn the paper around. You stare at the paper, confusion washing across your face. You lift a hand halfway, but it drops as the light goes out of your eyes. I stifle a sob, and reach to your face to close your eyelids. So many people have died for this war, so many corpses have been left in the open for the rats and vultures. I won’t let that happen to you. I pull out my shovel and start digging.

Being the child of a gardener, I take out one of the garden stakes and push it through the dirt at the top of the grave. As I’m about to leave, I sprinkle some of the seeds from my bag on the grave. At least something beautiful will come from this war.

And four months later, I was right. Walking out of the city gates, I see a patch of poppies waving in the wind.

If i was a sickly little peasant boy designated by the aristocracy to carry messages back and forth for pennies and you found me against our citys outer wall with a deep wound in my chest from a musket ball and a letter cluthed in my hand and i told you that my dying wish was to have someone read that letter to me so i would know i died for something important and you open it up and you find a single large illustrated diagram of an onion would you tell me what it was? What would you say?
