"Nicki Ault is a contemporary Canadian artist who has always loved art and began to pursue painting as a profession when her youngest son started Grade One. Her creative freedom increased with each year, and she now works full-time in her newly established private studio in Saskatoon. Nicki has an intense love for the boreal forest, northern lakes, big prairie skies and wild grasslands of Saskatchewan. It’s in these places she finds endless inspiration for her landscapes. Nicki considers herself to be a lifelong student of art, always determined to learn, grow and keep moving forward. She continually challenges herself to convey light and express emotion in her landscapes. In 2019 a feature was written on Nicki’s work in Canada’s Galleries West magazine and in 2020 she was named a SaskGalleries “Artist to Watch”. In no particular order, but recent reads on my Kindle include:

Novels:

The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden, The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake, Last Exit by Max Gladstone, Kiln People by David Brin, All The Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders, Chew by Naomi Ault, Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee, Amari and the Night Brothers by B. B. Alston, Shards of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky, Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse, Today We Choose Faces and Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny, Jack the Bodiless by Julian May, The Changeling and The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle.

Some are rereads, like X-Men comics and their whole thing with resurrection has had me on a kick to reread various sci-fi takes on resurrection, existentialism and identity, so stuff like Kiln People and the Zelazny books are ones I’ve read before, but not in awhile but I wanted to reread to pursue certain lines of thought that the comics have had me ruminating on lately. 

Jack the Bodiless and the rest of the Galactic Milieu books by May are similarly rereads for related reasons, and I’ll probably dive back into Max Gladstone’s Craft series of fantasy novels soon, both to finish it (since the last books only came out since the last time I was reading them years ago), and because they’re riffs on ‘humanity makes its own gods’ that play into another topic that’s been of interest to me lately. 

And the Victor LaValle books are rereads too, because his Sabretooth run and finding out that Changeling is in development as a show for AppleTV had me wanting to reread those.

The rest are all over the place - my uh, reading tendencies tend to be shall we say...eclectic - and have been varying degrees of hit or miss but I figure you can always just look them up and if you want a specific review or sense of some in particular, just ask.

Comics:

Mostly just been reading Marvel’s X-books lately, but in addition to those, Al Ewing’s We Only Find Them When They’re Dead at Boom has been an interesting read, finally got around to reading Destroyer by Victor LaValle, also from Boom, and from Image I’ve been reading Nita Hawes’ Nightmare Blog by Rodney Barnes, and also from Image, Radiant Red by Cherish Chen.

Gonna start working my way through this list next:

Typical of Michael Bay, there are predictable, derivative and thus boring scenes in this movie, but the Cinematography is beautiful, it is Stylish, Glamorous, with some great humor especially on the side of Martin Lawrence, and some of the action scenes (not all, just some) are pretty good. Entertaining enough to watch.
