Coriana was absolutely obsessed with her daughter Lily. After much arguing with Nick, the family was finally able to move into a house in Midtown. She knew it was the right thing to do; raising two kids in a small apartment was not viable, and Coriana was glad to be in a space they could call their own.
Nick and Gavin spent most of their time in the basement, which Nick had promptly turned into a “man cave.” Coriana would’ve preferred her husband tend to their infant daughter, but she knew his son needed a lot of attention too. It was all a lot for Gavin to still get used to, but Coriana couldn’t help but feel like Nick wasn’t pulling his weight with their new kid.
“Dad, look!” Gavin shouted excitedly. “High score!” “Hell yeah, man!” Nick said, clapping for his son at the arcade game. “This house rules,” said Gavin. “I’m glad we moved here and have this space all to ourselves. No girls allowed, right?” “Me too buddy,” said Nick. “And yeah, this is all for you and me!”
Later on that night, Coriana asked Nick to prepare dinner, too exhausted from work and busy with Lily to do so. Nick did as he always did; made an exaggerated sigh and pouted as he made dinner. “Oh, hell,” he groaned, a black puff of smoke clouding the pot on the stove. “Babe, looks like we’re having blackened spaghetti tonight!”
“Nick, really?” Coriana asked when Nick served plates of burnt spaghetti. “I’m sorry, babe,” he said with a shrug. “That’s why you should cook dinner! I always mess it up. It’s so much better when you do it.” “Yeah, I agree,” said Gavin. “This taste like trash!” Gavin scooped up a handful of his dinner and flung it at Coriana.
It splattered on her shirt, getting everywhere. “Gavin!” Coriana exclaimed. “We do not throw food at the table! We don’t throw anything at anyone, ever!” “What if I’m playing baseball?” Gavin asked with a laugh.
“This isn’t a joke!” Coriana said. “Baseball is a good exception, though,” Nick laughed. “Or basketball,” said Gavin. “Football.” “Any sport except soccer, I guess.” “Well, that’s taking it way too far,” Nick said. “HELLO!” Coriana shouted. “Can we please focus on the topic at hand here? Nick, please tell Gavin that it’s inappropriate and rude to throw food at me!”
“Ok, ok,” Nick grumbled, turning to his son. “Hey kid, that was wrong, you know that huh?” Gavin nodded somberly. “Yeah, I guess,” he muttered. “Don’t do it again.” “OK,” Gavin said with a smile as he began digging back into his burnt spaghetti. “See?” Nick said to Coriana. “We have an understanding.”
Coriana could not be bothered to unpack this entire evening. She got up without speaking and headed upstairs, grabbing Lily from her crib for her birthday celebration. Despite holding the baby, she carried the cake to the table and lit the candles herself, blowing them out to celebrate Lily’s birthday.
Lily grew up into a cute toddler, looking much like Coriana. She smiled at her daughter, ecstatic to see her grow a little older. And while she wouldn’t say it aloud, Coriana was also happy that her child looked like her and not like her husband.
