"did you decide on what college you're going to yet, smiles?" seamus asks, sitting down beside me.

"i'm stuck between umich and university of toronto." i answer, catching the attention of gavin in the process. "okay. i expected umich, but why uoft?"

"their media program is one of the best ones. but i don't know anyone out there and don't want to have to stay in a dorm."

"just tell your dad to text nick. he probably lives about fifteen minutes away from campus. i would say to have him text luca but he can barely keep track of his own kids at the moment."

"he's not going to text anyone. he's set on forcing me to go to umich because all of you did." i tell them.

"that's not right. don't let him talk you out of it, y/n. go wherever you want to go. if he won't message nick for you i will."

the door opens and we cut the conversation off there.

"what are you three talking about out here?" dad asks.

"just discussing my college options. i'm thinking about attending the university of toronto. their media program is really good, and i think it could be a great fit for me," i explain.

dad nods. "have you thought about where you'd stay? living arrangements are important too."

i hesitate, knowing dad is not going to like our plan. "i was thinking about having you ask nick if i could stay with him. he apparently lives nearby."

dad looks between gavin and seamus, probably trying to figure out which one of them gave me the idea. "moldy is the last person i'd trust you to live with. the dude is an idiot and you don't know him very well."

"i know, dad. but shea mentioned that he lives close by, and it would save me from having to stay in a dorm."

"i really think you would like michigan better, y/n. it's close to home and-"

"its not about what you want her to do, rutger. she's not a kid anymore. you have to let her make her own decisions now. if you want her to be happy quit pushing michigan on her and let her choose where she wants to go." seamus says, cutting dad off and taking him by surprise with his sudden outburst.

dad sighs, running his hand through his hair. "i do want you to be happy, Y/N. if you think uoft is the right choice for you, we'll figure out the living situation."

"even if that means maybe having to stay with nick?" i ask.

"yes, even if that means you having to stay with moldy."

thanks to seamus' little outburst, dad's view on things have changed a lot since then. he is still acting like I am making some huge mistake, don't get me wrong, but he has actually been treating me like an adult and stopped babying me as much.

i walk into the kitchen and dad looks up from his phone. "nick said that he can call in about ten minutes. you're sure-"

"yes dad. i'm still sure that i want to go to school in toronto. i'm not changing my mind."

ten minutes later dad's phone rings. He lets out a sigh before answering and putting the call on speaker.

"hey nick, how's it going?" dad greets him.

"not bad. what's this about Y/N heading up here for school?" nick replies, sounding genuinely interested.

"she's been accepted to UofT's media program. she's set on going, but trying to figure out the living situation. i was thinking she could stay with you for a bit, if that's okay," dad explains, glancing over at me.

nick doesn't hesitate. "of course, she's more than welcome to stay with me. i've got plenty of space."

"thank you so much, nick. i really appreciate it." i tell him.

"anytime, kiddo. just let me know when you're planning to move up here, and we'll sort everything out," nick replies.

we talk to nick for a little while longer and after we hang up, Dad turns to me. "so everything's falling into place. you excited?"

i take a deep breath, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. "yeah, i am. it's a big step, but i really think it's the right one."

dad smiles. "i know you'll do great, and i'm sorry for trying to michigan on you. seamus is right, you are growing up and i need to let you make your own choices."

classes start next week and and i'm moving into nick's house today. dad still completely hates the idea of me living with him but I quite frankly do not care. i should have been there already but i missed one turn which set me back about twenty minutes.

i pull into nick's driveway and dad and him are on the porch talking. i turn the car off and get out as they walk down off of the porch.

"you're late. we already got the stuff that was in my car moved in." dad says, clearly more pissed off than he already was.

"i know. i'm sorry. i missed the turn by the gas station and it set me back twenty minutes." i reply, trying to keep my voice steady.

"i told you this was a bad idea."

"dad, please," i start, but he cuts me off.

"no, Y/N. you're making a mistake."

i feel a surge of anger rush through me. "this is my decision. i'm nineteen and can make my own choices. the only reason you hate this idea so much is because i didn't go to umich like you wanted me to!"

dad shakes his head, clearly disappointed. "whatever, y/n, but don't come crying to me when things go wrong. "

with that, he turns and walks back to his car without another word. I watch as he drives away, feeling a mix of emotions—relief, anger, and sadness all at once.

nick puts a hand on my shoulder, breaking me out of my thoughts. "are you okay?"

i nod. "yeah, i'll be fine. thanks for letting me stay here."

"its no problem. let's get you settled in."

we start unloading my things from the car and I can't help but feel a sense of freedom. despite my dad's disapproval, i know that i made the right choice for myself.
