Action Bronson: Tiny Desk Concert

There are times during Action Bronson's Tiny Desk when his vocals momentarily drift. We instruct our guests to face the directional microphones so that our recorders clearly pick up the voices. Action warned us of the improbability of that happening before we started filming and sure enough, the Flushing, Queens emcee strolled off mic a couple of times, did an about face here and there and even took a knee mid-show. By the time we got to "Latin Grammys," he looked over to our engineer Josh Rogosin and said, "I told you I couldn't stand still. How do you play music still?" He's got a point.

Action's band Human Growth Hormone reinterprets his records so funky, it's nearly impossible not to move, yet the small imperfections during the set tickled me. Bam Bam, primarily known as a rapper, has turned his passion for food, clothing, sneakers, wrestling, writing, fitness and painting into bonafide professions. Never veering too far away from the booth, he's consistently dropped projects since 2011. After working out in the green room, Mr. Baklava walked to the Desk, greeting nearly every person in the room with a handshake, and proceeded to perform highlights from Mr. Wonderful, Lamb Over Rice, White Bronco, and Only For Dolphins. Bronson was born to entertain us.

There are times during Action Bronson's Tiny Desk when his vocals momentarily drift. We instruct our guests to face the directional microphones so that our recorders clearly pick up the voices. Action warned us of the improbability of that happening before we started filming and sure enough, the Flushing, Queens emcee strolled off mic a couple of times, did an about face here and there and even took a knee mid-show. By the time we got to "Latin Grammys," he looked over to our engineer Josh Rogosin and said, "I told you I couldn't stand still. How do you play music still?" He's got a point.

Action's band Human Growth Hormone reinterprets his records so funky, it's nearly impossible not to move, yet the small imperfections during the set tickled me. Bam Bam, primarily known as a rapper, has turned his passion for food, clothing, sneakers, wrestling, writing, fitness and painting into bonafide professions. Never veering too far away from the booth, he's consistently dropped projects since 2011. After working out in the green room, Mr. Baklava walked to the Desk, greeting nearly every person in the room with a handshake, and proceeded to perform highlights from Mr. Wonderful, Lamb Over Rice, White Bronco, and Only For Dolphins. Bronson was born to entertain us.

I re-watched Bronson (2008)

My favorite film of director Nicholas Winding Refn.

The life story of Britain's most famous prisoner, Michael Peterson, better known as Charlie Bronson.

Nicholas Winding Refn is a director who doesn't always click with audiences. His films are often violent, strange and contemplative rather than fast paced. Bronson has probably the most humor of any of films. It's an oddly funny look at a disturbed man. But, while it is truly funny, it's incredibly dark. You might say, why make something so deranged so funny. Because it has to be funny to balance the way in which the real man, Charlie Bronson, views himself and the way he is viewed. The film needs to be a spectacle, a show that does justice to the grandeur of the character, and Refn makes sure it is. He does so first and foremost with the best casting choice any director can make, Tom Hardy.

Tom Hardy is probably the best actor of his generation. Not only creating fully three dimensional characters, but also using incredible charisma and talent to make every performance exciting to behold. Even in his lesser films, hell even in the terrible ones, he's doing enough to make the film watchable and interesting.

Hardy's performance here is exciting, funny, explosive, menacing, likeable (at times) and all the while presenting us with a character that we can clearly see is mentally deranged and who we can't help but pity by the end. It's a really amazing performance.

Refn directs with a grainy and drab beauty. You can feel the chipped paint and grey clouds. His presentation of Bronson's story is one that teeters on celebration, but never fully goes that route. Instead using artistic moments and humor to reveal the very disturbing portrait of a dangerous and vicious human being.

The script is solid, never distancing you from the lead in any attempt to try and preach or make a statement. It's also Refn's most briskly paced film. It moves along with constant noise and volatility.

The movie isn't concerned about what made Michael Peterson into Charlie Bronson. It doesn't speculate on what's wrong with him or why there's something wrong with him, and it chooses storytelling and style over accuracy. This is more the legend of Charlie Bronson, not a complete documentary, but they don't take too many liberties as to ruin the reality of it all. Just enough to make an entertaining movie about a man who's famous for violence.

I prefer this film this way. I don't want to know why this character is this way. Sure, I'd like to know the real story of the man and do know a bit, but the character is one I want to think of as just pure animal chaos placed in the world. I want him to be larger than life and sort of indecipherable, a bit like the art he eventually creates. You can't pin him down.

The last moment of the film is a striking one which empathizes heavily with the character and the man, and in doing so is the most real moment in the film. Bronson is broken and suffers with mental illness and severely anti-social behavior that cages him in whether he's in prison or not.
