Welcome to another edition of “8 Questions with……”
Decided to have another go around in the Casting Group I’m a member of. Just about the all people who had contacted me after my first call have either been posted,too busy or just flaked. That happens,I generally am happy with a 33% percent return rate… But what a joyful way to kick off our newest crop of interviews with some amazing artists…like actress Judy Cerda. One of my favorite questions is the last one,the cheetah and I are flying in to meet our subject but get there a day early and then they have to play tour guide. Well Judy mentioned Santa Cruz,Calif and I knew I had lucked out in meeting a pretty cool lady. See,Santa Cruz is a old friend to me when I lived in San Jose. I shared that with Judy and then the talk went about about live music,DJs,a old club that was open when I was there and another one that isn’t. What a delightful and charming lady Judy turned out to be. I completely lucked out here and I’m so happy I got to meet her and now let me move my ass out of the way so you can meet Judy as well…….
Please introduce yourself and tell us about you.
My name is Judy Cerda and I am an actress. I also do some singing, dancing, print modeling, promo modeling, and voice overs on the side but acting is my main focus. I’ve been involved in the entertainment business all of my life as I started out with taking dance classes, performing in recitals and singing in convalescent homes/talent shows when I was 5 years old. Today I am still passionate about my career and it’s the thing that keeps me going. I love doing a variety of projects which includes films, commercials, tv shows, web series, music videos and industrials. I like to play a variety of roles but the villain types, sexy types and dramatic roles are my favorite. My favorite movie genre is horror.
What was it like growing up in your home? Was your family artistic? What are your three fondest memories growing up?
Both my parents sung in talent shows and convalescent homes and brought me along to do the same. I was always very imaginative and liked to do play acting with my dolls and other kids in the neighborhood. I guess I’d have to say my fondest memories were of riding my bike and swinging on the swing while singing as a young child and watching tv shows dreaming that I would be on them playing a similar role.
What led you to becoming a actress? How did you get your first job?
I started out doing plays and musicals in the theatre. I practiced singing and acting at home and started attending auditions for both. When I got my first lead role in a play, I was very excited and continued doing plays after that. After some years of doing plays, musicals and dancing in performing groups, I decided to move onto films, commercials and tv shows so I signed up for acting and commercial classes and attended them for over 6 years. I found that to be alot more exciting and more in line with my career goals. Since then, I have done over 250 projects in movies, tv shows, commercials, music videos, web series, industrials and more.
I was looking at some of your credits and you have been on some strangely titled shows like “Sex Sent Me To the Slammer” and “My Strange Criminal Addiction” – how did you get cast,what roles did you play and what was the experience like on the set of these shows?
It was great being on set for these shows. Yes, the titles are unique. These were actually crime drama series that re-enacted real stories on the Discovery ID channel. I was in several of their shows in various roles until they went off the air the end of 2016. I played a federal agent in one and a victim in the other. Both shoots were great as well as some other tv shows I did on the Discovery ID channel. I auditioned for a lead role on one of their shows in the beginning (I Almost Got Away With It), and got it. After that, they started calling me and booking me without auditions for different shows which I always appreciate. I really love doing crime drama shows and it is my goal to land roles on NCIS Los Angeles, Law and Order, and Chicago PD. Those are my favorite shows and I always watch the ION channel as I am so intrigued with their plots.
Do you feel TV/movies should be accountable for their stories?
I’m not sure what you mean by this one. I think that creativity should be allowed in movies and tv and that restrictions shouldn’t be put on them if it interferes with their story or their characters. They need to cast who they feel really emulates the roles and not be forced to cast certain types or certain people because the station or production company is insisting on it. The directors need to choose who they feel is the essence of the characters they are casting, and need to tell the story the way the writer intended. Political correctness should not be involved in the entertainment business as it’s a business like no other and the right cast and words are needed to bring it to life.
What has been the three best best/thee worst experiences so far in your career?
The best experiences have been getting leads in feature films and short films such as Villlain, El Camino, In Three Days, Agent 6, Late for Practice, Year 8, Taxi 24/7, and so much more, being hired to dance and act in much videos such as Insane, several 3pac videos, You Know by Freddiedredd and several others, and landing commercials for Fox TV, Pact Winery, Lucy Daniels Center and several others. The worst experiences have been when I have gotten booked, memorized lines, gotten my clothes, notes and directions all organized for a shoot, gotten up early to head out, and then get a call or text telling me the shoot is cancelled with no explanation. This has only happened a few times but I think it’s extremely rude and inconsiderate to cancel on an actor like that at the last minute without an explanation. Even if they do give one, it’s still late notice and there should be a cancellation fee. A few times I did receive a cancellation fee but didn’t a couple of other times and this really teaches me who is unprofessional in this business.
What kind music do you like to sing and how long have you been singing?
I’ve been singing since I was 5 years old. I started out singing in talent shows and as a performer in convalescent homes with my family. Singing and dancing has always been a big part of my life. I enjoy singing nice ballads, pop music, and show tunes.�� I really like to sing a variety of new music as well as some good classics.
As a performer,do you prefer live theater or TV/Film and why?
Definitely TV/Film! I have done both and I definitely prefer to be seen in a tv show or movie than on stage. I just always thought of theatre as a practice ground to work up to movies and TV. It’s fun and exciting but the acting is played up big for the stage so it’s not really realistic the way it is on the screen where natural acting comes into play. Plus, theatre does not pay actors well and requires a ton of rehearsals (some of them unpaid) so I pretty much got out of that. My focus is really on tv shows and movies and I submit to casting sites daily for this kind of work.
If you are at an audition and a fellow actress asked you for help for a part you are both going for,would you help them?
Yes! I have done that. I have been at auditions with my script printed out and come across an actress who forgot (?) or didn’t print out her script to memorize and practice with for some reason, and helped her out by giving her my script to read over and practice a bit, and even left it with her if I auditioned first and she was still waiting. I’ve also been asked by a few actresses how I think a role should be read and about emphasis on certain words. I have given my best advice to them to help out. It doesn’t hurt to help somebody and just let the best woman for the job win no matter who it is.
What scene is the biggest challenge for you to play?
A scene that involves alot of kissing and touching. It’s really hard to play a role like that for me when I know I don’t really feel it for the actor but sometimes it is a necessary part of a film and I understand that. It can be uncomfortable at first but I get through it. It helps to work with an actor you have a good chemistry with for that.
What do you do in regards to improving your craft?
I work on really feeling the emotions and thinking about how they relate to my own life. For example, if I need to cry in a scene, I think about what really makes me sad in real life and allow that emotion to take over. I also watch my own videos from films and web series to study what I can improve on.
The cheetah and I are flying in to see your latest project but we are a day early and you are now our tour guide,what are we doing?
We are going to Santa Cruz for the day! We’ll go to the Boardwalk to go on a few rides, go to the warf for lunch where they have some great restaurants, and then we’ll go singing at my favorite karaoke bar, Coasters, in the evening, to meet up with friends, and then go dancing at Blue Lagoon.
I like to thank Judy for her time and letting us have a nice chat. I also noticed Judy didn’t mention swimming off the beaches,she is my kind of person because those Santa Cruz beaches can be rather sketchy at times. As in being in the Red Triangle,where Great White Sharks like to swim and stuff……so thanks for looking out for us,Judy!!!

JACE: *jace might be a nervous nelly, but when it comes to scientific and magical discoveries, he's almost TOO adventurous. despite his better judgement, he's been venturing deeper into the avalon forests, bugging trees with cameras to detect strange phenomenon, and other devices to pick up whatever the cameras can't. he's planning on leaving soon before it gets too late... but just ONE more camera.*
KOUGAH: *The cameras may not catch something but there's a loud ribbit at all this bugging and stepping about. The frog watches with all three eyes. All three solid blue eyes*
JACE: ... *looks around for the source of the ribbit. it's just a frog, right?? nothing to worry about, but he's got a bad feel anyway. and he feels justified when he catches a glimpse of three spooky blue eyes. time to carefully... slowly... climb down from this tree...*
KOUGAH: *No need to leave. Here's another frog. Two more. Five..... ten sets of spooky eyes. And then a much larger set of three eyes on the ground. Staring up at Jace.*
KOUGAH: *RIBBIT, but you know.... in a satanic fashion*
KOUGAH: *the nearest frog is gonna give him a good frenching on the arm with a poison tongue*
JACE: O_O AH!
JACE: *tries to hop out of the way, but alas, he's tongued.* Eeewwww... *and ow? the pain is apparently an afterthought, giving way to a small yelp and a punt of his boot in a frog's direction before he tries to make a break for it. sorry, nature.*
KOUGAH: *This is an extremely rude child meal, one frog is punted away but there are at least 14 more plus the Big Mamma. The frogs jump from tree to tree, wanting to slorp up Jace's spiritual essense. After the adrenaline fades his arm is going to sting and burn like heck. Like a frost burn. More tongues lick out at his legs. This is what happens when you wear shorts in the forest*
JACE: *oh yeah?? well his adrenaline is ALWAYS pumping, take THAT frogs. he can and will run from most everything in life. but in reality, it's hard to maintain momentum when he's being assaulted as he is. he makes an attempt to fight while he flights, turning to deflect tongues with swords.*
KOUGAH: *Can he deflect the Big Mamma tongue though? She jabs it out at him. Let Mamma slorp ya boy*
JACE: *doubtful, as the frog tongue does it's frog tongue thing and congeals around his sword. there it goes. and there he goes, yanked because he doesn't want to lose his sword. YOINK.* ACK!
KOUGAH: *Swords don't belong in mouths but it's worth it as her babies can now feast on boy fleshence. Or so they thought. Here comes the Awoo Crew. Lorge wolves springing on the boy fleshence to protect it. The awoos are covered with rock and moss and bark with yellow blank eyes of their own. they bite. A small tornado at the heels of a neon painted Koug arrive. Somehow his sweat doesn't effect the paint
KOUGAH: in the grooves of his musculature*
JACE: *wow okay, but the grooves of his musculature are sure effecting jace's sweat. IT'S HAPPENING. but everything else is also happening as he's swarmed by wolves, too... to protect him? he's confused, unsure of what's happening right now.* K... Kougah??
KOUGAH: *flexes gently at being mentioned, he's crouched partially and glances to Jace* ...Hell0.... pard0n me. *growls with the pack at the frogs. Sorry Jace he knows this is exremely rude but it's necessary*
JACE: *oh, that's just... that's just FINE. he's overwhelmed by everything and decides to quit squirming and struggling with the frogs now that the wolves are also here to FIGHT. he sits. right on the forest floor. the sting of his skin finally catching up to him.*
KOUGAH: *The frogs are chased back whythe awoos so Koug looks to Jace.... stoops.* Y0u were 1njured. Hm. That 1s expected....
KOUGAH: 1f. 1 may.
KOUGAH: *holds out hand*
JACE: *SHINY EYED... he places his hand in kougah's.*
KOUGAH: *Oh.... he wanted the whole arm. Um. Sweats. Okay. He just. Looks it over and digs in his fur fanny pack also known as his loincloth.* Th1s 1s n0th1ng ser10us. Th0ugh y0u w0n't feel y0ur arm t0m0rr0w 1t w0n't bec0me encase w1th black fr0st.
JACE: ... I wont feel my arm???
KOUGAH: N0. 1 ap0l0g1ze th1s 1s the best 1 can d0. *Produces a small jar and rubs salve on the frost burn*
JACE: Oh....... Sorry, I dont mean to sound like I dont appreciate it...
JACE: Because I do! A lot. Temporary numbness is definitely preferable to um... Black frost. *watches him LATHER HIM UP... and then glances away.*
KOUGAH: *Please..... but also he's wheezing internally he doesn't deserve touching this precious creature with his filthy rough peasant paws. Hands. Paws.* Yes... true.
KOUGAH: ....
KOUGAH: 1f they d1d k1ll y0u y0u w0uld be rev1ved as 0ne 0f them.
KOUGAH: An essence t0ad.
KOUGAH: That 1s the name 0f the creature.
JACE: *stares at him with wide eyes.* ... /Oh./
JACE: Then Im especially grateful?? I dont think I would have made it without you...
JACE: Thank you. Really.
KOUGAH: *Grateful? But he was injured. Truly Jace is too forgiving and kind. He goes blue under the lines of neon paint on his face* 1f y0u 1ns1st 0n thank1ng me.... then 1 am deeply apprec1at1ve.
KOUGAH: 1 w1ll d0 my best t0 serv1ce y0u t0 the best 0f my ab1l1t1es.
JACE: Service... Me... *stares at him some more. don't mind him if his mind wanders for a second.*
JACE: Thanks!! Again!! Hahaha!!
JACE: Am I saying thank you too much?? Im sorry!!
JACE: Aaahhh... Should my arm be feeling numb now?? It feels numb. Actually everything feels numb. Wait, thats probably just me. Nevermind.
KOUGAH: *Tilts head, he wonders if Jace is considering his competence. He doesn't blame him* N0 need t0 be s0rry.
KOUGAH: But 1f y0u are numb all0w me t0 help y0u h0me....1f y0u d0 n0t m1nd.
JACE: No!! I mean yes.
JACE: If you insist??? Also because I probably need it. *he's had a difficult day... he feels weak.*
KOUGAH: 1 d0.... Pard0n my hands. And self. *He's sorry. But scoops and stands* May 1 1nqu1re what y0u were d01ng th1s deep 1n the f0rest?
JACE: *WHOOP there he goes. he curls up a little in kougah's arms, fists balled up against his chest.* Oh... I was putting in some cameras and things.
JACE: So that I could monitor the activity here when I cant... physically be here.
JACE: Which I guess should be most of the time... I know its dangerous and all but I really want to understand how this stuff works!
KOUGAH: *Looks at him briefly.... tries to not sweat.... fails* 1 see.....

JACE: *blinks up at him* Really? You dont think its... reckless?

KOUGAH: .....Yes. There are 0thers that have g0ne m1ss1ng. *gently flex.... he'd rather not think of her as missing... just. Goofing off somewhere*
JACE: Oh... *he goes quiet, figuring it's probably not something he wants to think about. but he's curious what he knows. maybe he can help?*
JACE: Do you know if theres anything connecting the disappearances?
KOUGAH: There l1kely are.... but 1 can't track the scents 1f there 1s a culpr1t.
KOUGAH: There are... s0 many pe0ple 1n and 0ut 0f the f0rest n0w.

KOUGAH: 0h... *Sweats.... sorry about dampening your clothes Jace. That makes him sweat more* .... P1ty. That they d0n't d0 that.

KOUGAH: *puts him down gently and steps back still blue in the cheek area. clears throat* Well.
KOUGAH: 1. h0pe y0u feel better.
KOUGAH: And y0ur arm isn't numb f0r the full 16 h0urs 1 ant1c1pate.
KOUGAH: Maybe. 1t w0n't be.
JACE: Yeah... *bashful feet shuffling.* Thanks, Kougah.
JACE: Ill see you around, okay? *smiles goofily, then ducks his head... and then absconds quickly through the transportalizer, screaming internally.*
KOUGAH: *Oh.....same about internal screams. Wolfs into the night and wheezes*

Houston, We Have A Big Boy Bedroom (Buh-Bye Crib!)
Our little man’s room is looking a little different these days, thanks to finally being done with the crib (our kids love a crib) and making a few other tweaks to the space while we were at it. He’ll be four this April, and he finally decided he was done with the crib earlier in January, which was bittersweet. We’ve had the same crib in our house for nearly 8 years (!!!) since our daughter used it before him for quite a while too. But it was also exciting because it meant his room was about to get some updates after basically being frozen in time for the past four years (you can read all about the process of creating his nursery here).

I’m not even exaggerating when I say it hadn’t changed since we put this room together in anticipation of his arrival (back in April of 2014). Same chair, same rug, same curtains, same crib sheets, same green closet door, same bike art, same play baskets, same stuff on the built-ins. Pretty much everything: THE SAME. In fact, whenever anyone asked for an update on his room we said “If you look at the reveal on the blog that’s pretty much what it looks like right now! The only change is that we removed the changing pad after he stopped needing that. But literally almost identical!”
A few months ago he did finally discover that the little “T” wall decals we added were peel-off-able… after more than 3 years of not touching them at all. Oh well, they had a good run. And now that we added some sconces and a large piece of art to that wall between the built-ins, it’s feeling airy and light without them, so it’s all good.

You might remember the daybed as the same one we used after our daughter was done with the crib when she was around 3.5 years old. She remained in the daybed until last year, when we upgraded her to a larger full-sized bed (more on that here). That conveniently freed up the daybed to be used by her brother… whenever he ended up being done with his crib (we didn’t know we still had almost a year to go! Ha!). Have I mentioned our kids LOVE A CRIB?!

A daybed is a great way to transition out of a crib since it’s low to the ground, has two rails on the ends, and is basically just sort of like a big crib without the front. This one is from West Elm (no longer sold, but here’s something similar) and it fits a regular twin-sized mattress. We actually designed these built-ins to eventually accommodate a twin or even a full sized bed, so it’s like the space is finally fulfilling its bed destiny.
To read how we DIYed the built-ins in each corner of the room, here’s a full write up. We just used ready-made Ikea dressers and added the bookcase on top, using crown molding and baseboard to make them look built-in. This is a really doable project, even for a beginner.

The sconces might be my favorite part because I always dreamed of adding sconces to either side of the “interior nook” that the built-ins created. It didn’t make sense to shine lights down on a baby in a crib (just picture that – a little “baby investigation” – ha!) so I showed unusual restraint and waited until we changed the crib out for a bed to add them. Then one day I discovered that Target sold these awesome brass and blue enamel sconces for just $49.99 (you have the best luck finding two of them by ordering them online). They basically screamed “BUY ME” and I listened.
The best thing about them is that they’re plug-in sconces (couldn’t hardwire anything into the side of the built-ins anyway) and the on/off switch is right on the base of the sconce, so you don’t have to hunt for it on the cord somewhere behind the bed, which is blissfully convenient.
We also bought some 3M Command cord clips to secure the cords against the baseboard so they’re not flapping around anywhere and we’re happy to report that we haven’t had any issues with anyone messing with them (younger kids in a crib might yank on them, so I’d reserve them for an older kid in a bed). It’s a nice clean look to have them turn and follow the baseboard too, so the cord clips have been really helpful.
The art is another favorite find for the room, especially since the combo of rocks (what almost-four-year-old doesn’t love rocks?!) and bright colors is basically our son’s sweet spot these days. It’s a downloadable print from Jenny’s Print Shop that was just $15 for the download and we got an 18 x 24″ print of it at FedEx Office for $22. If you guys haven’t check out Jenny’s Print Shop yet, I highly recommend it. You can get such affordable large scale prints this way (or really prints of any size). We already had this frame, so all together it was under $37 for some awesome wall-filling art!
To cozy up his new bed, we added some blue & white pinstripe sheets, a couple of these bee pillows, and this long gray bolster (which has a zip off cover). The duvet is the same Ikea one we also use in our bedroom. That’s a new pillow on the chair too (it’s this one) just to bring some more of the light colors from the bed over to that side of the room. The side table is a secondhand find (here’s something similar), the rug was a HomeGoods discovery (here’s something similar), the pouf is from here, and the chair is no longer sold (but here’s something similar).
Although the room has moved away from a lot of the forest greens we originally decorated with, he still loves his cheerful closet door (it’s Irish Moss by Benjamin Moore), which ties into the giant bike print that still hangs over his bookcase (that was a print that hung in The Gap and we asked if we could have it when they changed our their displays).

His “changing table” (really just an Ikea bookcase that we wrapped in wood) has officially changed back to being a bookcase. The natural woven baskets in the cubbies were there before, but I did swap some light colored fabric bins in (to replace two larger and more baby-ish bins we used to have with a gorilla and a dragon on them). Since we’re not storing bulky diapers or baby blankets, the smaller baskets have been easier for a three-year-old to pull in and out to help clean up his own toys, which is always a plus.
Whenever I share a picture of this whale everyone asks where it’s from. We got it at Pottery Barn Kids many years ago. Maybe in 2012? Wish they’d bring it back, it’s so cute. And that shelf with the books in it…. remember when John built that eight years ago?! It was the very first thing he ever built. And now the man can make built-ins and even decks! Well, deck. He might only make one of those in his lifetime. Ha!
That round thing with the iPod in it is a sound machine we’ve had forever that we use to play an album of white noise on repeat while he sleeps (our daughter used to use this one). I joke that we might be the last household in the world who uses an iPod everyday.
Oh and a few people asked why we didn’t go right for a full sized bed in here since we mentioned how our daughter’s room felt so much more grounded and less like it had a big skating rink in the middle of it when we traded a full bed in for the daybed, but this room is a lot smaller – maybe even half the size. So it would feel much more cramped with a bigger bed, and he still uses the floor a lot for spreading out cars and blocks, so the daybed is great for this room.

It wasn’t the worst room to start with, but it sure has come a long way. Even if it ends up getting frozen in time for a few more years…
