So most of my dreams are undeniably bizarre but last night's dream was the weirdest because in it I saw fucking. Antlion larvae swimming in the ocean like as part of their natural habitat. And it made total sense in the dream like oh yeah they can live both in the ground or in the fucking sea that makes sense but then I woke up and I was like huh

More character designs except this time they’re fantasy dwarves and whenever I draw fantasy dwarves they legally all need to have facial hair regardless of gender cause I think that’s cool.
Also these guys are all secretly Narnian and are also on the crew of the Dawn Treader cause I’m forever building out the crew in my mind, and it’s practicing doing my own designs. Here is some more of the crew.
The slightest amount of lore for them is down here if you care, along with general Narnia headcanons and waffling.
——————————————————————————
The dwarf on the far left is a river dwarf I’ve decided. I don’t know fully that is other than I think it’d be cool if there was a tribe of dwarves that were close to the water nymphs, and generally have great knowledge and skills that are an asset on a sailing crew.
The river dwarves are one of the reasons telmarines were scared of the water (along with the niads, however the bridge of beruna imprisoned the river god, who otherwise was also responsible for many folk tales told to young telmarine children. Their fear of water is ironic to me cause I believe there’s evidence of them coming from the Caribbean as pirates? I imagine the humans on caspians crew are like, either rediscovering their roots or the few who held on to that seafaring background. Mostly younger telmarines in the same generation as caspian, they questioned the leadership and were very happy when old narnia overthrew Miraz.)
the river dwarves are generally peaceful and most lived in hiding during telmars reign. They’re temperament is very stable and they do well under pressure. River dwarves are incredibly stealthy and only attack in necessity as self defense. In terms of stealth think like lotr hobbits, and this is a great contrast to most other dwarves in Narnia (strong strength and combat, low stealth) A lot of them abstained from fighting against telmar alltogether due to their peaceful values. They are disconnected from some other dwarf cultures which can cause some tension.
The two in the middle come from a tribe of dwarves that are blacksmiths, and also they’re siblings. The brother in particular is a toy maker by trade specifically, and loves kids. His wife (far right) has a background in carpentry. Him and his wife don’t have any but virtually adopt any child they see. The sister is always having a good time, and seafaring comes more naturally to her than smithywork ever did.
The carpentry/forest dwarves generally have a history of closeness with dryads similarly to how the river dwarves are with the water spirits. Some of that connection has been severed due to how deeply the dryads retreated and were removed when Caspian the Conqueror (not our caspian) and his descendants over-deforested. It takes time to restore that connection.
The two on the left may or may not have a situationship and the two on the right have been married for years.
Regardless of trade they’re all on the ship because they’re loyal as fuck to Caspian, the married couple kind of see themselves in a parental role to him but it’s debatable on how that actually plays out.
Also no one has a name cause I’m so bad at coming up with names.
————————
My thinking in general is that Narnian dwarves make up a lot of the trades, other races do contribute as well, (I’d imagine some marshwiggles work in stuff related to ships/seafaring but perhaps not travelling themselves) most fauns are more into the arts/spirituality, but some do take up trades (a couple of my designs from this post are tradespeople, one of them is a bard.)
I haven’t done many centaur designs, but my vague thoughts is that there are those who are more spiritual and practice prophecy, stargazing, advising, and those who are more into combat, and are protectors, or messengers.
—————
Gender and the ideas around sexuality I’d also imagine would be a lot more fluid and most Narnians are a lot more open than some of the more human civilizations. (Like it’s a country made of sentient trees, talking animals and mythical beings, and the human countries kind of canonically are like “what the heck is going on over there???” Or they’re afraid of them and try to colonize them, like the telmarines)
These are all half baked ideas but I’ve been fixated on Narnia since I was five and it’s lowkey the reason I spent so much time and passion into drawing and now have a career in graphic design and illustration, so. This is mostly all for me, so don’t mind how long this post has gotten. 🤠

Heyo, original bath attendant au anon here. LOVE the addition of huffy humiliated Dream but I keep circling back on it and have a variation that settled in and chewed my brain for a while-
Dream is a Niad/Dryad/nixie water spirit Im sorry It's been a while since I studied mythology terminology. Water Spirit. Who inhabits a sacred spring where great warriors, poets, etc go to cleanse themselves and receive blessings. Hob is a traveler coated in dirt and blood, making his way from one war to the next to fill in as a mercenary when he stumbles along this remote, holy place and is just grateful for fresh water, drinks and dips his hands in, stripping and sinking in not knowing he's being intently watched by Dream. You think he'd be offended by the sullying of his waters, but he's more interested in Hob's heart and soul, reading his spirit before his body, and he is very interested in both. Dream has never been handled so roughly, only reverently. He likes this different kind of worship ❤️ kind of lost my train of thought at the end there but you know what I mean.
Oooh yes dirty (in more ways than one) warrior Hob and water spirit Dream is such a delicious combination!
At first Dream is like, how DARE you use my sacred waters for your BATH?! but then he gets a good look at Hob and suddenly changes his mind. He's quite flattered that such a handsome man would choose him. And it does feel kind of nice to have Hob’s warm, pulsing body so close, caressing him all over and trickling his sacred waters into the most intimate places...
Dream slips out of his hiding place and Hob nearly jumps out of his skin, rushing to cover himself up. Too late, Dream has seen everything. He calmly explains that he is the guardian spirit of the sacred pool, and that Hob is welcome to continue bathing. In fact, Dream will help him.
Dream has never manifested his physical body to a human before, let alone touched one. But he can't resist pouring water from his cupped hands to wash the blood and dirt from Hob’s chest. The thick hair pleases and fascinates him, and he makes sure to wash it thoroughly until Hob groans his appreciation.
Hob is so grateful and he rambles on about how Dream’s water is the clearest and most beautiful he's ever seen. Dream loves the praise and at this point he's hoping that Hob will stay forever (or at least until the moon rises and shines on his water... that's when he's at his most beautiful, in his own opinion).
Alas Hob can't stay, but he can give Dream a parting gift - something raw and rough and very human. He pulls Dream into his broad, strong arms and kisses him with a passion that Dream has never experienced before. One of his rough calloused hands even squeezes Dream’s delicate little arse!
At which point Dream just knows that he's going to need to find a way to make sure his human comes back... as soon as possible.

During my reread of The Lightning Thief, I've come up with a very funny headcannon. What if Percy doesn't know how to swim? Sally never would have risked taking him to a public poll, and the only other option she really would have had was teaching him herself while they were at Montauk, but Percy says it's usually too cold to swim there, and throwing him in the ocean seems a little too risky if she's trying to keep the fact that he's the son of Poseidon from him. She probably knew that if he fell into a large body of water for some reason his dad would save him, so why risk it?
The idea that Percy's "swimming" in the first book is just him trying to imitate what he's seen other people do and the current carrying him around is an image I can't get out of my head. I can just imagine the Nereid that gave Percy the pearls reporting back to Poseidon after watching Percy 'swim' away from her like, "Your kid doesn't know jack shit about swimming. That's embarrassing. If he survives this, you need to get him some lessons." When Percy gets back to camp, the Niads insist on giving him lessons.

A Day Out with Mayflies
requested by @selkiegemm
Mayflies are a globally distributed order of insects consisting of over 2,100 species. They can be found in nearly any environment, provided there is a source of clean freshwater; the only places that lack any species of mayfly are the Arctic and Antarctic. The name of the mayfly order, Ephemeroptera, comes from a Greek word that means 'living for a day', which is appropriate given the group's famous lifespan.
All mayfly species begin their lives as nymphs, which hatch from eggs laid in fresh, usually slow moving water. These nymphs, also known as niads, are completely aquatic. Some species swim freely in the water; these species often lack gills and absorb oxygen directly through their exoskeleton. Other species do have frill-like gills, and burrow under rocks and logs, or directly into the mud. Most nymphs feed on detritus, algae, and vegetation, but a few are carnivorous and will hunt the larvae of other insects. Mayfly niads are also important sources of food for many other insects, fish, and amphibians.
The time a mayfly spends as a nymph largely depends on the species; some remain this way for only a few weeks, while others will live for up to three years as niads. When the time has come to grow up, the nymph will molt into the first of their two adult forms: the subimago. This form has a pair of wings, though they are rudimentary. At this stage, the gut also empties itself of organs and instead fills with air to bring the mayfly to the water's surface. They can fly as subimagos, albeit not very well; once they've fully molted, the new adult mayfly will leave the water to find a safe place for one last transformation. This is particularly tricky, as subimagos are a favorite food for many fish, amphibians, birds, and reptiles.
About 24 to 48 hours after emerging as a subimago, mayflies moult into their final form, the imago. This stage has much larger wings, which adults immedietly use to find a mate. Males swarm over open water in mating dances. When a male finds a female, he flies beneath her and clasps her abdomen to inseminate her. Afterwards, she lays between 400 and 3000 eggs in the nearest source of freshwater. The imago stage is the shortest of a mayfly's life; most live only a few days, assuming they are not caught by predators. The females of one species, Dolania americana, only live for five minutes after emerging from the subimago stage.
While there is a wide variation in the appearance of Ephemeroptera species, the general body structure is largely consistent. Nymphs are generally elongated, with compound eyes and an abdomen consisting of 10 segments. The imago adult stage has clear wings, short antennae, and distinct sensory organs known as cerci, which often resembles a pair of antennae emerging from the abdomen. Like antennae, these cerci are used to as sensory organs, as well as a defense mechanism in some species.
Conservation status: There is only one species of mayfly listed as Endangered by the IUCN: the large blue lake mayfly (Tasmanophlebi lacuscoerulei). This species is threatened by habitat loss; however many species of mayfly are sensitive to pollution, to the point where their presence can act as indicators of ecosystem health.
If you like what I do, consider leaving a tip or buying me a ko-fi!
