love to see the sharks doing pride night correctly - by still wearing the pride jerseys during warmups and simply outing the one homophobe on the team 👌
he has a right to not wear a pride jersey, and we have the right to know that he’s a piece of shit

while i agree that the media doesn’t focus nearly enough on the positive side of things, wearing a pride jersey for 10 fucking minutes on one single day isn’t about activism. it’s about including and welcoming everyone on ice.
bigotry and prejudice thrives in places where it isn’t obviously rejected. it’s too bad the nhl does not understand that.

i genuinely think i might stop following hockey pages on sites that aren’t tumblr. instagram, facebook, twitter, etc hold such rampant homophobia in every comment section that talks about gay people in hockey and pride in hockey. it genuinely makes me sad and scared to see their anger and hatred towards the lgbtqia+ community :(. if anyone has any suggestions for hockey pages on instagram that aren’t followed by mostly homophobes please let me know

but for real, don't advertise that you're going to wear a pride jersey and tape and then just... don't and not give any answers as to why

The Maple Leafs and Marlies are proud to support diverse communities, including members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. We are committed to promoting a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment within hockey-both on and off the ice.
On November 5th, The Toronto Maple Leafs welcomed a group from Friends of Ruby for a special game day experience at Scotiabank Arena. Hosted by Toronto Maple Leafs' Mark Fraser and Brock McGillis, the group enjoyed watching morning skate, toured the Leafs locker room and Scotiabank Arena, had a chance to meet players, speak with Brian Burke and attend the Leafs game.

actually the worst part of the whole pride jersey/pride night fiasco currently going on is that it (perhaps intentionally?) derailed the entire original point of the thing. players wearing pride jerseys (which, may i remind you, they literally only do for warmups) and teams engaging in pride nights was supposed to start a conversation about actual queer issues in not just hockey but all of sports. to help the undoubtedly countless highly talented nhl bound young gay hockey players who just ... stop playing bc they're afraid they're literally going to be killed. talk about how young trans athletes aren't even allowed to compete bc of legislation or sports leagues' rules. the teams, the franchises themselves - not unaffiliated sports journalists, or wives of more liberal players, or passionate fans - were supposed to do that: directly support and endorse diversity and inclusivity initiatives that actually did something.
but instead we just get ... this. teams allowing players to choose to wear the pride jerseys (when they have to wear all the other "fun" warmup jerseys) or just forgoing jerseys all together under the literally paper thin excuse of simply having russian players on the team (which also makes a complete mockery of the actual experiences of queer people in russia). then those teams and players draw all the ire and ridicule and attention to them, and every other team that does choose to do a pride night and have all their players wear pride jerseys now can get away with doing the bare minimum and being applauded for it.
anyways, it's just very exhausting knowing that, for so many reasons, the sport that i like will always be hostile to the mere concept of my existence

hi apparently travis mcdermott of the arizona coyotes not only forced the nhl to lift the ban, but he also has used pride tape during a recent game !!!!!
instagram
bonus!!!!!! in the IG comment thread, some fans claimed he has been doing this for every game this season!!!!
thank you travis for sticking up for the lgbtq+ community after the spotlight had passed, after the headlines were forgotten. you have undoubtedly helped people feel seen, respected, and loved.
