Hockey brothers are always so insanely important to me because I raised my little brother. Heâs got some health issues and our parents were addicts so I spent the majority of my teenage years raising him and whatever friends he brought home. He and his best friend actually got me into hockey because they played and watched it like daily. Heâs all grown up, now, but heâs still my baby and I would kill for him. So seeing these bonds in the NHL just⊠ahhhhhh they kill me and heal me all at once.

jack & luke loving quinnâs gf almost as much as he does bc suddenly they have an older sister they can call for advice on the most random thingsâŠ
âso, hypothetically, if i wanted to get a pedicure, would they give it to me since iâm a guy?â jack asks you over the phone.
you stop in your tracks, right in front of your car, baffled at the question. âjack, is this seriously what you called me four times about?â
âi mean, yeah. you werenât picking up. thought you and quinn might be screwing and wanted to break that up as soon as i thought about it,â he admits like itâs the most casual thing in the world.
âjack!â you scolded, scoffing at his crudeness. âi was picking up some snacks for the guys before their game today. i couldnât even get to my phone if i wanted to,â you roll your eyes, even though he canât see you.
âyou make it sound like you were ignoring me on purpose,â he says, basically being able to hear the pout on his face.
âi wasnât not ignoring you on purpose.â
he smacks his teeth at your answer, returning to his original question. âanyways, will they do a pedicure on my gnarly man feet or no?â
you donât even try to hide the laugh that escapes you, opening your door and finally sitting down in your car. âyes jack, theyâll give you a pedicure. are you actually going to go get one?â
âyes! dude, have you seen my feet lately? theyâre disgusting. plus, quinn was telling luke and i about that time you made him do one with you and how much better his feet felt in his skates afterwards.â
you think about the fact that quinn now has monthly pedicure appointments with you, not shocked at all that he shared the information with his younger brothers.
âjack! is that y/n? i need to talk to her!â you hear luke yell in the background of jackâs call, stopping whatever response you were about to give.
you hear shuffling, insinuating the exchange of the phone. âhey! y/n! so, i need your advice.â
âhi, luke, iâm good, thanks for asking! how are you?â your voice drips with sarcasm.
âyeah, hi and whatever,â he dismisses you. âso, if you were a girl, would you rather your date wear a pink shirt to show heâs not a toxic guy, or would you rather him wear blue or black to show heâs serious about the date?â
once again, you pause. you look over to the side, as if thereâs an invisible camera there and mouth a âwhat?â
âokay, well first of all i am a girl-â
âwell yeah, but likeâŠa real girl. one that isnât dating quinn and would be ready to hop on the luke train,â he interrupts you, earning his own roll of your eyes.
âas i was saying,â you ignore his interruption, âi am a girl, and i donât think itâs that serious? wear whatever you wanna wear. if she likes you, she likes you. if she doesnât, she doesnât. i donât think wearing pink is going to either hurt or help the date.â
the line is silent for a moment. âi think iâm going to wear pink anyways. you know, just to let her know iâm not a douche,â he finally speaks.
âokay, well, if thatâs what you want to do, then do it-â
âthanks, y/n! bye!â youâre cut off yet again, hearing the line go dead. groaning, you call quinn, letting him know youâre on your way with the food.
âhey, baby! you get the catering order yet?â quinnâs excited voice fills your car as you turn it on and put it in drive.
âyeah, i got it. on my way now. just got off the phone with your idiot brothers,â you tell him, pulling out into traffic.
âoh god, what did they want this time?â he asks you, knowing how often youâre plagued with calls from his siblings.
âwell, jack wanted to know if he could book a pedicure appointment even though heâs a man, and then luke wanted to know if he should wear pink on his date so he doesnât look like a douche,â you give the short version of your conversations.
quinn lets out a laugh, not at all surprised at his brothers.
âquinn, weâve gotta set some ground rules. i canât keep doing this. i donât know how you dealt with this by yourself for all these years. and god, your sweet mother. i feel for her,â you say not entirely seriously, knowing they call ellen more than they call you, if thatâs even possible.
âbaby, they love you. youâre the big sister they never had, theyâre just excited to finally have someone to ask this stuff to other than mom. because mom usually tells them to figure it out on their own,â he chuckles, knowing how much both luke and jack have told him they loved having you around.
âwell, iâm about to take the ellen approach because they make me want to pull my hair out sometimes, those disgustingly lovable heathens,â you tell your boyfriend, never really being able to say anything bad about the brothers. theyâre like excited puppies anytime they get to see you in person, and it does melt your heart a little bit each time.
âiâll talk to them about it,â quinnâs still laughing at how you canât help but talk about how much you love his brothers, even when youâre aggravated at them. âjust focus on getting here. i miss you, wanna see you before game time.â
âokay, be there in like-â you stop talking when your ringtone blares through your car.
âgod, its jack again. i gotta go, iâll see you in a few minutes,â you groan, ending the call to answer the interruption.
âwhat is it this time, jack?â

"Baby Zegras" (luke Hughes x zegras!reader)
summary: childhood friends to lovers, reader is trevor's sister, secret dating caught by jack, trevor is portrayed as a mean older brother at the start (im sorry I love him I promise he gets better), italics mean flashbacks
warnings!! heated makeout, suggestive, cursing, mentions of alcohol, mutual pining, fluff, luke being a touch starved awkward king, I feel like I did a bad job proofreading
a/n: strap in cause this one is long!! towards the end it feels kind of rushed but that's bc I need to go to bed but I also wanted to finish this by tn. anyways hope you like it!!
wc:6.6k
The game was long. Too long. The entire time you sat at the edge of your seat up in the box. Your Anaheim Ducks jersey falling slightly past your fingertips, disregarding any attempts to push back your sleeves. Your own last name on your back as you watched your brother, Trevor, race for the puck. You sat in between your mother and father who were basically screaming at the ice like they were down there themselves, but you had your knees to your chest biting your nails. Of course you were proud of your brother, and you always cheered for him any other night, but this game was different. Your attention was focused on New Jersey defenceman, Luke Hughes. When Trevor was 12, he became close with Jack Hughes. They bonded over their love for hockey, and eventually claimed each other as best friends. That summer, Trevor was invited to stay at the Hughes lake house and with how gracious and welcoming Ellen and Jim Hughes were, they offered to let you stay as well.Â
âMama I donât wanna go! This is stupid. These are Trevorâs friends. Iâve never even met these people before.â You whined as your mother dragged you by your hand out of the car. Your glance immediately caught the large house in front of you. Youâd never seen anything like it, never visited a lake being from New York. A boy stood on the front porch, his mother standing beside him with a warm smile. Trevor immediately jumps out of the car, running past you and your mother. You watched as he did a secret handshake with the boy on the porch just before pulling him in for a hug. You took a moment to smell the salty freshness of the air surrounding you. Everything felt so wide and open, and for a split second you thought it might not be too bad. Just as you were enjoying the moment, your mother tugged on your hand walking closer to the house, and your stubbornness kicked back in immediately. You snatched your hand away from her, crossing your arms as you followed her up the porch steps. She hugged the boyâs mother and small conversation began to spark as you stood with a grumpy face behind her. You felt Trevor tug on your arm, pulling you to where he and the boy stood.
âY/n, this is my friend Jack.â You kept your annoyed face as you shoved Trevors hand off your arm.
âOh! Youâre baby Zegras!â Jack greeted you with a wide smile and held out his hand for you to shake. You simply crossed your arms and let out an aggressive huff.
âIâm not a baby. Iâm ten.â You tilted your head away from him as he slowly let down the hand he had up.
âDonât pay attention to her, Jack. Sheâs just a brat who wants attention.â Trevor gave the back of your head a hit and you turned your focus back to him.
âIâm not a brat!â You shoved him back, and he sent you a slap to the shoulder.
âAre too!â What started as two shoves turned into a slap fight on the porch between the two of you. You took a couple hits to his face, while his slaps remained on your chest. Just as you were about to send him a friendly kick to the groin your mother came over to separate the two of you.
âHey! Hey! Mrs. Hughes was nice enough to invite you both to her lake house which we should be grateful for! Letâs try to act like normal human beings for once!â She said sternly, but not yelling like she normally did. Probably didnât want to scare off Mrs. Hughes.
âShe was gonna kick me in the nuts!â Trevor pointed at you, to which you responded by pointing back at him.
âHe started it! He called me a brat!â Your face grew angrier as you and Trevor were now in a stare off.
âYeah, you were being a brat!â You tried to hit him through your motherâs grip, but she had caught it before you even thought about doing so. She put a hand on each of your backs as she guided the two of you into the house with Mrs. Hughes who had started laughing at the sibling tussle saying, âI have three boys. Trust me, I've seen worse. Quinn ripped out Jackâs braces at the ice rink last year.â The motherâs began to walk ahead of you, Trevor and Jack. Your arms remained crossed, still quite upset at Trevor. Before you knew it, Jack had his arm around you as the three of you broke away from your mom and Mrs. Hughes. Trevor walked up next to you mumbling something along the lines of âDonât embarrass me or I'll kill you and dance on your grave.â Jack led you both down a flight of stairs to the basement, his arm still wrapped around your shoulder. You didnât hate that it was there, Jack was a pretty boy and the fact that he was your brotherâs best friend made the whole situation better. You knew you could use it to twist Trevorâs gears in the future. When you had made it to the bottom of the steps you were greeted by a couch full of guys you had never met.
âY/n, this is Alex, Cole, my brother Quinn, and my brother Luke. Luke is your age, Quinn is 14 and those two dick heads are me and Trevorâs age.â Your hands fell out of the crossed position they were in, and you allowed your face to soften. âEveryone, this is Baby Zegras.â
You quickly shot him a glare âIâm not a-â
âNot a baby. I know, but the thing about hockey nicknames is that youâre supposed to hate it. You may hate it, but the team thinks it fits.â He interrupted your speech and shook you with the hand on your shoulder. You turned your attention back to the couch full of unfamiliar boys that were friends with Trevor. Youâd heard countless stories about them, but now you could put faces to names. You upturned your lips into a half closed-mouthed smile and awkwardly raised your hand to wave. Everyone smiled back and several âHi!âs echoed through the room. Jack moved his hand to grip on your shoulder as he moved you towards the couch. He took a seat next to Cole, and Trevor followed after. You made your way to the end of the couch to sit next to your brother, but he responded by putting his leg up on the seat next to him.
âNuh uh. No way. I didnât even want you to be here.â You almost felt tears well up in your eyes as the only thing you wanted was the comfort of your big brother in a room filled with unfamiliar faces.
âYou can come sit with me!â You heard an excited voice from behind and turned around to see the littlest Hughes scooching over and patting the seat next to him. You sucked all of your emotions back into your chest as you made your way over. You took a seat in between Luke and his older brother who was sitting back looking at his phone. The two of you sat awkwardly for a moment and watched as the older boys discussed things that happened during hockey camp. You looked over to Quinn who you were sure was only there to make sure the boys didnât break any furniture, or light the basement on fire.Â
âThey call me baby too. Baby Hughes. I hate it.â Luke let out with a small laugh. You smiled and let out a chuckle as the two of you sat shoulder to shoulder, with hands in laps. âWe can be babies together.â He looked over at you and held out his fist for a fist bump. You quickly responded to it not wanting to ruin the chance of having an ally at this house for the summer.
Later that night after your mother left, and the house began to quiet down you were moved into the rooms youâd be sleeping in. Being the youngest child, you were prone to separation anxiety and homesickness. You missed your mom, but you were just thankful youâd be sleeping in a room with Trevor. Cole and Alex were tucked away in the spare room, Luke and Jack in Jackâs room, and you and Trevor in Lukeâs room. Trevor was visibly upset that heâd be sharing a room with you, rather than his friends that he came on this trip to see. It didnât make you sad that he didnât want to share a room, just as long as heâd be forced in there because lord knows you couldnât sleep alone. You and Trevor were tucked into Lukeâs bed around ten. You tossed and tousled trying to sleep which was hard because you were so far away from home and your mother was nowhere to be seen. After about thirty minutes of lying in bed next to Trevor, you felt the weight of his body lift off the mattress. He had assumed you fell asleep and decided to make his way into the room with all of his friends. Without his presence beside you, you immediately felt a wave of sadness come over you. You burst into tears silently, trying to muffle your heavy breathing into the pillow. You wanted nothing more than to be safe in your own bed, in your own house with your family. You lay on your side facing away from the door, practically drowning yourself in your own tears. As you very quietly repeated the words âI just want to go homeâ to yourself, you heard the door creak open. You immediately sat up, pulling your knees to your chest under the blanket, wiping your nose with the back of your hand as you tried to stifle your sobs.
âTrevor?â You sniffled out with a shaky breath following behind. You had expected, wanted even, to see Trevor creep through the doorway. Despite the fights you just wanted the comfort of your big brother.
âY/n? Are you okay?â Luke shuffled into the room with tired eyes, shutting the door behind him. You caught a sudden shock at the sight of him as he moved closer towards the bed.
âYeah I-Iâm fine.â You nodded your head trying your hardest not to cry in front of the boy, but that all went out the window when you said âI just miss my mommy.â Tears resumed spilling down your face. You bit your lip, hoping it would stop the streaming mess that was burning your face. Luke said nothing. He only walked over to you in the bed and wrapped his arms around you to pull you in for a hug. You continued to cry into his shoulder, letting out shaky breaths. The comfort of his polyester t-shirt against your chin definitely helped.
âYou know when I'm away and I miss my mommy, I just hug Buttons and pretend it's her.â Luke let go of the hug and reached down to the floor to grab a beat up looking teddy bear. It had one missing eye, with a button for the other, its ears were limp, and it looked like it had been through two world wars. âI came in here to get him, but I think you need him more than I do.â Luke gave a soft smile as he handed over his teddy bear. The same bear that heâd threatened Jack to death if he dared to touch it. Heâd never let another person hold Buttons except for his parents, but for some reason you were different.
Luke stayed in the room after handing over his one prized possession. He laid on the floor with a blanket and a couple pillows to let you have the bed. He talked your little ears off until you finally found the comfort to fall asleep, Buttons in hand. From that day on, you and Luke became inseparable. Everyday at the Lake it was always you two together running around in the yard. You would play together until the two of you basically dropped from exhaustion. You became the âbabiesâ of the lake house. You were invited back the next summer. Per request, an air mattress was moved into Lukeâs room which he took gladly and let you have the bed. You werenât sad when your mother left anymore, in fact it made you happy to know you got to spend time with Luke. The Hughes continued to invite you and Trevor to the lake house every summer, and every summer you and Luke grew closer. You were close with all the other guys with them looking at you like a younger sister, but Luke's eyes turned into hearts when he caught the sight of you. He doesnât remember exactly when, but he was around thirteen or fourteen when he realized how in love with you he was. The way you made his heart feel when you would even just brush a shoulder against him was intense, and he wanted to feel that way everyday for the rest of his life. When the two of you were fifteen, Jack, Trevor, Cole, and Alex decided to throw a party in the basement while Ellen and Jim were away. There were probably 50 people in the basement that night filled with beautiful girls who you were sure would take Lukeâs attention away, but instead the two of you stood against the wall all night sipping from Coca-Cola cans since Jack and Trevor said neither of you were allowed to drink. You and Luke watched as your brothers sat in a circle playing spin the bottle with various girls youâd never seen before and would probably never see again. After realizing how lame the party was since the two of you couldnât drink, Luke pulled you by your hand outside.
âRace you to the dock.â He said quicker than you could think as he began to run towards the water.
âNot fair Lu!â You raced after him in a fit of giggles trying to catch up. Luke of course, made it to the dock first and before you could stop in your tracks, He grabbed you by your waist. The two of you stood there laughing and collapsing into each other. A few moments later you found yourselves sitting at the edge of the dock sitting shoulder to shoulder with your feet hanging over the water. You two just sat there taking in the quiet bliss away from the obnoxious party behind you. The two of you started talking about the actions of your brothers inside the house specifically, spin the bottle.
âNever had your first kiss, Lukey?â You nudged his shoulder and he let out a soft laugh.
âNo. Not yet. Who would I have kissed?â He looked over at you with a toothy grin.
âI donât know. Sure thereâs plenty of girls lined up to kiss the baby Hughes.â He gave a sheepish grin and looked down at the water âI havenât had mine either. Feels kind of pathetic being fifteen not having kissed anyone. All of my friends have.â You shifted your gaze to the horizon in front of you, taking a sip from your coke can. What you didnât realize is that Luke had been staring at you. Admiring your features and coming up with either the best or worst idea heâd ever had.
âYou could kiss me.â He kept his sight on your face, not realizing what heâd just said. You almost choked on the soda in your mouth as you moved your head to face him. He had a smirk on his face that told you he was infatuated with the way you looked. You couldnât understand why sitting on the dock with no makeup on, in one of his hockey sweatshirts, with your hair messily waved up from the lake water.
âReally?â You asked him with hope in your voice that he was serious.
âYeah. I mean it wouldnât be weird. We're comfortable with each other.â This is when he realized what he had suggested. A bright red tint covered his face as you scooched in closer to him.Â
âOkay.â Was all you said as you cupped his face into your hand, pulling him in closer. He placed a simple, but sweet closed-mouthed kiss on your lips. The both of you pulled back in an instant, smiling at each other. You noticed the way his blush creeped towards his ears as you rubbed your thumb against his cheekbone.
Unfortunately for the two of you, this wasnât the moment that your relationship began. However, it was the moment that made you realize just how in love you were with Luke, the crush no longer being one sided. Throughout high school neither of you dated anyone and the only people youâd ever kissed were each other. The two of you grew out of your awkward teen stages together, remaining close. After graduation, Luke went to U Michigan to play Hockey, while you studied psychology at NYU. Though it seemed to your families and friends that the two of you had drifted, it was quite the opposite. You and Luke would stay up late nights on facetime talking about your vastly different college experiences with each other. You loved him, and he loved you. It had always been that way and youâd hoped it would stay that way. When you found out that Luke had been drafted to the New Jersey Devils and he would be living only 20 minutes away, you immediately dropped every man on your contact list. It only took Luke until the second time he visited your apartment to confess his love to you. It was the most relieving moment of both of your lives, feeling like a giant weight had been lifted from your chests. You and Luke decided to keep your relationship a secret considering if Trevor found out, heâd have to resort to physical violence. Luke recalled Trevor giving a whole speech at the lake house to all the boys saying that you were âoff limitsâ and if he found any of them touching you in any way that wasnât platonic heâd âbeat your ass so far into the ground youâll be able to see the core of the earthâ You and Lukeâs relationship consisted of a lot of secret meetups at him and Jackâs apartment after games. Jack always went out with the team for drinks after a win, so you and Luke had the place to yourself. The two of you would steal moments during the day to go out for a nice lunch date, or a stroll through the park. It was all youâve ever wanted and more
That was almost a year ago. Now, you were sitting in the box seats watching your brother go head to head against your boyfriend on the ice. The entire scene was nerve wracking considering it was third period, with the Ducks leading the Devils 4-3. Your parents were ecstatic as they watched the plays unfold, jumping up and down every time the Ducks got the puck back. You however, were nervously making a snack out of your freshly painted nails with your knees tucked to your chest in the same way they were the night Luke found you crying in his bedroom. With the way you looked and the seats you were in, all signs pointed to âthis girl is a Ducks fanâ but on the inside you were secretly cheering on the Devils. Youâd never seen Luke play in an NHL game before, since you both thought it would look strange showing up to one of his games when the two of you supposedly havenât spoken in two or three years. You had however, seen Trevor play several times and you knew when he was in the game, he was really into it. Deep down you knew that Trevor wouldnât get aggressive with the Hughes boys, but for some reason the thought lingered in your mind. Not even specifically Trevor, but the thought of any Ducks player becoming aggressive with Luke made your skin crawl. To you, he was fragile. Always the sweetest guy in the room, and you donât know what you would do if something terrible happened. You also knew that Luke was constantly chirping at the opposing team which caused your fears to escalate.Â
âBaby, you gotta calm down.â Your mom placed a hand on your shoulder in an attempt to bring down your nerves âYouâre on high alert right now, and the Ducks are winning!â She points to Trevor on the ice, who is grinning wide. Your gaze remained on Luke who was sitting on the bench, and you wished he would just look at you for two seconds.Â
âWhat? It's a stressful game!â You groaned at your mother with a hint of annoyance.Â
âYeah honey, I didnât even know you got into hockey like this.â Your dad added to which you gave a simple eye roll and returned chewing on your nails.
âOoh! I know! Letâs play that game where we try to find your future husband on the opposing team.â You looked over at your mom who was bouncing her shoulders up and down with a mischievous grin.
âNo no no. Mom, I donât wanna play.â You leaned your head back in frustration at her attempts to distract you.
âWhat? You love this game! Come on. HmmâŠâ She skimmed through the players on the ice reading the names and numbers on their backs âOh! Luke Hughes number 43!â She excitedly pointed at Luke from the box âYou two were awfully close as kids. How about reconnecting?â Your motherâs words did nothing except make you realize that he was back on the ice. You sat up straight in your seat basically going down on your nails at this point. âHeâs got nice hair and heâs tall and-â
âMom, shush I'm trying to watch this.â She sighed in defeat as you locked your full attention onto Luke skating around the ice.Â
âYou shouldnât talk to your mother like that. I ruined my body for you, you know? Iâm going to go get you a hot chocolate and weâll see if that calms you down.â Your mom got up from her seat with your dad following close behind her.
âYeah yeah thatâs great, mom. Thanks.â Your eyes still strictly focused on Luke, whose figure was extremely small from the box. You watched as Jack passed him the puck. He skated fast as always, clearly attempting to go coast to coast taking a shot on goal, but it was ultimately saved by the goalie who returned the puck to the Ducks. You let your head hang for a moment in your hands before drawing your attention back to the game. You scooted to the edge of your seat, putting your legs back on the ground as you rested your elbows on your knees. You saw Luke skate closer to Trevors teammate, Ross Johnston. You knew immediately that he was chirping. He was chirping at a time like this. You stared closely, squinting your eyes, watching as Luke spat out a couple words to the taller and older man. You looked down and ran your hands through your hair as you let out a quiet âOh my god.â Groaning through your words. You looked up from the floor, turning your attention back to the ice, only to see Luke being pushed up against the glass by Johnston.Â
âOH MY GOD.â You practically shouted as you rose from your seat, stepping closer to the box barrier watching the scene unfold in distress. The arenaâs camera pointed to Luke who was trying to talk his way out of things as usual. Luckily, his teammates had his back and swooped in quickly with the refs following close behind. You let out a sigh of relief as Johnston was pulled away from Luke. You moved back to your seat, heart just about beating out of your chest. You tilted your head behind you to see several Ducks WAGs and parents giving you confused stares. You just widened your eyes and slowly turned your head back to the game, wanting to hide yourself in your jersey. Instead you opted to pull your legs back up to your chest, resting your head on your knees.Â
The game continued for another 10 minutes where Nico scored a goal to tie the game, and Luke made an assist to Jack who scored the game winning point. Your parents and everyone else in the box let out various groans and hung their heads in defeat, but you were wearing a secret smile behind your hand. No matter what it came down to, you were just proud of Luke even at the expense of your brotherâs loss. People started shuffling out of the arena, including your parents who said they just wanted to make the hour drive back home and go to sleep. You told them you wanted to wait for Trevor as a cover up. You said your goodbyes to them and waited in the box for a bit longer.
lukey: Meet at my car in the parking garage. Second floor. Ily â€ïž
You smiled at his message and began making your way out of the suite. All of the fans had shuffled out of the arena at this point, so you were just waiting for Luke to finish his post game interviews. Your walk to the parking garage was nicer than you expected it to be. You smiled and blushed at the way Luke looked when Jack scored the final goal. You couldnât show it when you were sitting in the box, but you had to let out the excitement now that you were alone. The whole place that was once crowded with fans, was now almost completely empty and silent. You passed by a giant mural of Jackâs face as you walked down a hallway, and laughed to yourself about how big that guy's ego is. You made it to an elevator where you showed the security guard your pass. He looked you up and down visibly confused by your Ducks jersey paired with your Devilâs pass. He shrugged it off and let you in. You skipped your way down the parking garage until you found Lukeâs car. You leaned against it, waiting for him to meet you there. After about ten minutes you finally caught sight of Luke running up to you with his duffle bag slung around his shoulder, grinning wide. His soft curls poked out the sides of his Devils baseball cap, while his black hoodie flopped up and down as he made his way over to you. He immediately engulfed you into a tight hug, his arms wrapping around your waist.
âYou did so good tonight, baby. Iâm so proud of you.â You muffled through the fabric on his shoulder.Â
âI love you so much. Thank you for being here.â He huffed out as he rocked your body back and forth. He let his hold strengthen as he took in the scent of your perfume which you only wore because you knew it was his favorite.Â
âYou have no idea how hard it was trying not to cheer when you made that pass to Jack.â You giggled through your sentence and he let out a soft laugh. He released his hold, flipping his cap backwards, and pulled you in for a kiss. His soft lips immediately washed away the anxiety that poured over you during the game. Jokingly you pushed him back.
âNo! You asshole! You scared me tonight!â You giggled and pushed his chest back, as he sent you back a large grin âYou have to stop chirping at guys who are bigger than you, ESPECIALLY dudes with a big temperament!â He simply laughed at your statement, wrapping an arm around your shoulder pulling you to the passenger side of the car. He opened the door for you and you stepped into your seat with the help of his hand. He wrapped an arm around you, resting his hand on the center console once you were settled. He planted a soft kiss on your lips.
âI will stop chirping the day you show up to a game in my jersey.â He whispered into your parted mouth before shutting the door and entering the driver's seat.
â----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It didnât take long for Luke to get started with you. It never did. The moment you shut the door to his apartment behind you, he had you pinned up against it. His lips placed sloppy kisses on yours which were only growing hungrier by the second. His large hands were planted on your waist making you feel like the smallest woman in the world. Your hands moved to his chest, gripping at the fabric of his hoodie, working to pull him closer. His tongue swiped your bottom lip, causing a slight moan to escape the back of your throat. He removed his lips from yours just barely to whisper âJump.â The feel of his breath against your lips made you eager for his touch. You jumped up to let him hold you. Your legs wrapped around his waist as he carried you through the living room like you weighed nothing. Your hands moved from his chest to the nape of his neck, allowing your fingers to explore his curls. You tugged at his hair slightly to which he responded with a low groan from his throat. He moved throughout the apartment until his back slammed on the door of his bedroom. With one hand on your ass, the other very eagerly searched for the door knob. You gently bit his bottom lip as he finally managed to get the door open. Entering the room, he laid you down on his bed, positioning himself on top of you as your legs remained around his waist pulling him further up. He removed his lips from yours and began placing a trail of sloppy kisses down your neck, until he found your sweet spot and began teething at it. You threw your head back and arched your back desperately for him.
âNeed you now, Luke.â You spoke softly with each word interrupted with a breath as his hand hiked further up your leggings. You felt him grin against your neck as he moved his kisses up your jawline until he reached your ear.
âTake off this stupid fuckinâ jersey.â He whispered and his words sent a shiver down your spine as you grew hungrier for his touch. He leaned off of you slightly as you sat up for a moment to rip the Anaheim Ducks jersey off your body. He leaned back into you and began leaving kisses on the parts of your left breast that were uncovered by your bra. He moved his left hand to your stomach, letting the right one reach towards your back to unclasp the lacy bra you had worn just for him.
âOH LUKEY BOY! HOW BOUT THEM DEVS?â Jack's voice echoed throughout the apartment as you and Luke froze, staring at each other with widened eyes. He quickly jumped off of you, realizing the bedroom door had been left open. Jack always went for drinks after a win, so this was unexpected and quite unusual. Your fight or flight mode kicked in as you quickly remove yourself from the bed, shuffling under it. You watched as Luke quickly made his way out of the bedroom, shutting the door closed behind him. Jack passed him on his way to the kitchen, giving him a pat on the shoulder. âGood job tonight, man. Seriously.â Jack glanced over at his brother as he leaned against the kitchen counter. Lukeâs face was completely saturated with a red tint and his lips were still swollen. âYou good, dude?â
âI-uh yeah i-iâm good.â Luke stuttered over his words as he straightened his posture and stuck his hands in his pocket, trying to look as natural as possible.
âOkay.â Jack laughed, taking a sip from his water bottle looking at the counter. âHowâs your dick?â Jack looked back to his brother now with a mischievous smile on his face.
âItâs uh- itâs good.â Luke nodded his head, not fully processing Jackâs question âWait, what?â He leaned against the door frame.
âItâs poking out quite a bit.â Jackâs smile only grew wider as he teased his little brother.
âWhat the fuck you lookinâ at my dick for?â Luke's voice comes out as frustrated and slightly guilty.
âIâm not! Itâs looking at me!â Jack laughed through his sentence, taking another swig from his water bottle. Luke rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. âSoâŠwho's the bunny in your room?â Jack asked, catching Luke off guard.
âW-what I d- I donât know what youâre talking about. There's no âbunnyâ in my room.â Luke flailed his arms out, trying his best to cover up the situation.Â
âYeah bullshit. Whoâs the girl?â Jack smirked, walking closer to his brother who just shook his head. âTell me, or I'm gonna go in there and introduce myself.âÂ
âNo no no, Jack. You have to believe me. Thereâs no one in there.â Luke protested, but Jackâs hand was already on the doorknob and entering the room. Luke followed close behind him, a feeling of relief washed over when you were nowhere to be seen. âSee! I told you. No girl.â Jack felt defeated for a split second, but knew not to give up as he walked towards your jersey on the floor. You silently cursed at yourself from under the bed for not grabbing itn your heart dropping straight to your stomach.Â
âSo, this is your Ducks jersey I'm assuming?â Jack looked over to Luke with a devilish grin, jersey in hand. Luke's hands went straight to his head, as Jack crouched down to where you were hiding under the bed. Luckily the shadows of the night were in your favor, covering your face perfectly.
âHey queen. Iâm Luke's brother, Jack. Promise I donât bite.â He reached out his hand for you to take as you sighed, and accepted the defeat. You slowly made your way out from under the bed, your head poking out first.
âHey, Jack Attack.â You gave him a sheepish smile as he fell back into the wall in shock. His mouth gaped wide open as he looked over to Luke, then to you, then back to Luke.
âBABY ZEGRAS?â Jack yelled at Luke as you swiped your jersey from his hand, quickly putting it back on. âBaby Zegras is your bunny?!â Jackâs glances shifted back and forth between you and Luke. âOh my god.â Jack covered his face with his hands as he leaned his head up against the wall. âHow long?â You and Luke glanced at each other, unsure of what to do at the moment. âHOW LONG? OH MY GOD!â Jack whined at the idea of the two babies from the lake house being together.
âUh um bout a year.â Luke let out as his arms fell limp beside him.
âA YEAR?â Jack turned to face him, uncovering his face âTHATâS A LONG FUCKINâ TIME, GUYS!â You began to bite your nails, staring down at the floor. âOh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Luke youâre a deadman.â Luke's ears tinted pink as Jack rested his forehead against the wall.
âNo no, he's not. Just please please donât tell Trevor.â You whined at Jack, begging for the slightest bit of sympathy.
âTHAT'S GONNA BE HARD CONSIDERING HEâS IN THE ELEVATOR ON HIS WAY UP HERE!â Jack muffled a scream through his spot on the wall. Your eyes widened as you looked over at Luke who had his hands on his knees, clearly stressing.Â
âHoly shit.â was all you could let escape your mouth, as you heard someone knocking on the door. Jack ran out of the room to let Trevor in, as you and Luke shuffled in next to each other freaking out, like you were two kids whoâd been caught by their parents. You winced at the sound of Trevorâs voice when he greeted Jack at the doorway. However it was quickly interrupted, by Jack pulling him straight towards Lukeâs room.
âTrevor, let me direct you to the scene of the crime!â Jack said with a shocked, manic smile on his face. You and Luke stood there shoulder to shoulder. Both of you looked a mess.
âI donât get it. Y/n, what are you doing here?â Trevor let out a small, confused laugh. He stood there and glanced at the two of you, trying to connect the dots in his head. You felt a hard lump in your throat as Trevor took an unbelievably long time trying to figure out what was happening.
âOh my god, Trevor. THEY FUCKINâ!â Jack spat out, flinging his arms towards the two of you. You watched in terror as Trevorâs face grew angry, his fist charging up in the air. You quickly stepped in between him and Luke.
âNO NO NO NO! STOP! We are not âfuckinâ! I think the two of you should sit on the couch.â You motioned the boys out of Lukeâs room with him following close behind.
âYeah, you sure have a lot of explaining to do.â Trevor huffed out as his face turned tomato red, taking his seat on the couch. You and Luke stood in front of the couch facing Trevor and Jack. Your firm gaze was planted on Trevorâs, but Luke was staring at the floor in fear that these were his last moments alive. You smacked him in the chest back into reality, as he fluffed his hair and directed his gaze towards Jack with a look that said âfuck youâ.The two of you stood there side by side taking in the final moments of your private relationship. You looked over to Luke who gave you a soft smile and nodded his head.
âLuke and I have something to share with the two of you.â You started. Jack and Trevor moved closer to the edge of the couch wearing the same concerned expression with a hint of anger. âWe are not just hooking up.â You kept your stern look on Trevor as you took Lukeâs hand into yours. âWe are in love.â You watched as Trevorâs mouth dropped and Jack pretended to vomit, leaning over the edge of the couch. âAND, have beenâŠfor the past year.â Trevors mouth gaped open wider as he tilted his head down, looking up at the two of you through his eyebrows. Jack began to laugh nervously at the situation, looked over to Luke, and mouthed âYouâre fucked.â You and Luke glanced at each other nervously, hand in hand as Trevor stepped up from the couch and made his way towards Luke. Trevor gave him the death stare of his life, to the point where he was afraid to blink. Through Trevorâs tough exterior, you hoped there was a small part of him that just wanted you to be happy. Thankfully, you were right in your instincts and Trevor held his hand out for Luke to shake. A sigh of relief left your mouth as Luke smiled slightly, taking Trevorâs hand in his.Â
âIf my baby sister is gonna date an idiot, iâm glad itâs this idiot.â Your shared anxiety with Luke quickly left both of your bodies as Trevor made his way back to the couch. You looked over at each other with wide grins, realizing the part of your relationship that you both dread was finally over, and you could finally continue your lives without having to be so secretive.Â

â Ë ïœĄ â àšà§ Ë
y/n loved summer.
y/n loved going to the beach or on the lake every single day. she loved the smell of salt water when she drove to the hughes' lake house every summer. she loved her birthday being in the beginning of june, meaning she'd get cake and presents and time with her favorite people on her day. she loved going to fairs almost every weekend and getting sick with the youngest hughes brother after eating their weight in fried foods. she also loved jack hughes.
the day y/n stepped foot into the hughes' lake house at the ripe age of three years old, she knew she was going to love it there.
y/n sat impatiently in her mothers car as she drove to the lake house. this was the first summer y/n convinced her parents to let her go by herself. her father would be busy with work this summer anyway, and y/n thought her mom might want a house to herself for a while.
y/n sat in the passenger seat, legs tucked against her chest as she texted luke throughout the trip. even though her and jack were the same age, she was always closer to luke.
speaking of jack, he had texted the girl himself, asking if she was almost to the lake house, knowing it would just be her staying the summer.
her heart flipped when she saw his name come up at the top of her phone. she held in a giggle as she texted him back.
y/n couldn't help but love jack. she knew she was in love with him since she was ten years old. it was the day he comforted her after her bike got ruined by quinn, when he "accidentally" forgot to bring it inside. the kids soon found out the next morning that it got ran over by a car, making both wheels messed up and the plastic cracked.
ever since she can't help but be drawn to him, and it wasn't changing this summer.
sure they were all older, and this is the first summer in three years where all brothers would be in the lake house.
luke and jack would always be busy with hockey when quinn wasn't, and vice versa.
y/n practically jumped out of the car before her mom even put it into park.
"y/n!" her mom begins the scold her, but the girl is already getting her bags out of the trunk.
"sorry mom, just excited," she smiles.
"now you know all the rules right?" her mom asks as she stops next to the driver's side window.
"yes mom," y/n rolls her eyes.
her mom takes in a quick breath of air, "just mind your manners, and have fun, okay?"
y/n nods, "love you mom" she calls out as she runs up the driveway, hearing a response from her mom before she drives off.
she can't even get her hand up to knock on the door, when luke opens it eagerly.
"you're here!" he laughs before dragging her into a big hug.
"i'm here!" she laughs with him, before going into the house.
the two begin to catch up, considering they haven't seen each other in at least a year. their busy schedules just did not line up.
y/n pauses their conversation to run up the stairs to the bedroom that's been claimed as hers. jim and ellen hughes gifted her the room as a thirteenth birthday present, and not much has changed in the room.
the walls were still baby pink. they used to be filled with bright colored posters out of magazines, and now were filled with pictures filled of her and her friends, and the three brothers.
the glow in the dark star stickers were still on the ceiling, making her giggle slightly.
she didn't bother unpacking now, content with throwing her bags on her bed.
she walked down the hardwood in the hallway, stopping by jack's room. she peaked her head in the cracked door, but frowned when there was no sign of the middle child. she continued down the short hallway towards quinn's room.
she repeated the process from jack's room, and smiled once she saw the oldest brother.
she catches him off gaurd with her knock on his door, making him pause as he was in the middle of putting away clothes from his hamper.
"hey, you're here," he warmly smiles at her, letting her enter his room. "sorry, i didn't here you come in, or i would've been downstairs."
"you're all good," she smiles back as he opens his arms for a hug. "do you know where jack is?" she asks as they pull away from each other.
quinn knew she would ask sooner or later, so he was mad at himself for letting his smile falter.
"he's picking up a friend right now. she's supposed to stay the next week," he explains.
once he sees y/n's smile falter as well, he's quick to change the subject. "are you excited for your birthday?"
y/n's smile is quick to return as she nods, "it feels like i've been twenty-two forever," she drags out the last word, making both of them laugh.
"oh by the way, when jack gets back we're all going on the boat," quinn exclaims, telling her to change into her swimsuit.
the two bid goodbye as y/n practically skips back down the hallway towards her room. she loves nothing more than being on the lake with the brothers. it's her paradise away from paradise.
however her current bliss is lost as she remembers she packed her swimsuits at the very bottom of her bag. she groans, realizing she'll have to unpack anyway to retrieve them.
she does her best to unpack quickly, not wanting to make anyone wait to start their summer festivities.
finally after nearly ten minutes of unpacking, all of her shorts, t-shirts and dresses were in their designated drawers in her worn out dresser.
she kept her swimsuits laid haphazardly in her suitcase, considering she always mix-matches tops and bottoms anyway. no need to put them in a drawer.
she grabs two pieces; a pair of black bottoms with white polka dots, and a yellow top with thin straps connecting behind her neck and back.
as y/n was upstairs getting changed, the three brothers, along with jack's friend, gabriella, were waiting in the boat for y/n. jack and gabriella already had swimsuits on under their clothes, and luke and quinn were fast to change.
"can't we leave already? i'm like baking out here," gabriella groans, leaning her head back against jack's arm thats behind her, and fanning herself off.
luke shakes his head as quinn responds, "no, we're waiting for y/n."
gabriella simply groans again, as jack is unusually quiet, but stays connected at the hip with her.
speak of the devil, y/n is running out of the back door and down the wooden dock. she has a towel, sunglasses, and container of pineapple in one hand and her phone in the other.
quinn and luke both chuckle at her frazzled state, even though this is usually how she comes out to the boat.
"just in time," luke pats the seat next to him. y/n gladly sits down on the hot material, and quinn starts the boat.
"oh, jack you made it!" y/n smiles, until she notices how close him and his friend are. "hi, i'm y/n," she holds her hand out.
"gabriella," the girl simply replies, making y/n awkwardly put her hand back in her lap.
to avoid any upcoming awkwardness, luke questions, "whatcha got there?" pointing to a plastic container besides y/n's leg.
she holds it in front of her, making him chuckle.
"what is with you and pineapple?"
"what? it's good!" she defends, before putting it in the cooler filled with ice, water, seltzers and beers.
the five on the boat make small talk (really it's luke, quinn and y/n talking in the front, while jack and gabriella as whispering at the back), before quinn stops the boat in an empty clearing. y/n helps luke with the anchor until the metal can't go any farther down into the water.
"race you to the water," luke pokes y/n's side.
"not fair!" she responds, having to catch up to him at the back of the boat.
she jumps in right after him, and quinn is quick to follow, splashing both luke and y/n in the process.
"you guys coming in? or are you just gonna canoodle the whole time?" luke interrogates the two left on the boat.
"you did not just say canoodle," y/n cringes.
"i did," luke nods proudly, "and i'll say it again."
y/n and quinn both begin splashing luke before he can let any other nonsense slip from his lips.
fifteen minutes pass, and quinn and luke are having a backflip contest off the back of the boat, with y/n being the judge.
even with the amazing title of being the backclip contest judge, she couldn't help but advert her eyes towards jack.
the way his hair practically glowed from the sunset behind him. the way his eyes seemed to shine brighter with the blue waves reflecting off of the them. the way his eyes crinkled when he smiles at the story gabriella told him. the way he played with gabriella's blonde hair. the way he was rubbing his thumb over gabriella's thigh.
y/n now felt like she was going to throw up.
"okay," luke pops up from under the water, "who had the better backflip that time?"
"what?" that broke y/n out of her trance.
"the contest," luke reminds her, "who won that time?"
"uh, sorry i wasn't paying attention."
luke splashes her, "some judge you are."
quinn however noticed y/n's small change in demeanour, then looked in the direction she was just looking in, putting together what had made her gone sour.
of course the other hughes brothers knew about y/n's infatuation with jack. it hasn't lessened over the years, and the only one who hasn't noticed was jack.
"you guys wanna start heading back?" quinn asked the two in the water, "mom said they're doing a barbeque tonight."
luke and y/n nod, both excited about the traditional first night barbeque. ellen and jim always made too much food, but their hearts are always in the right place.
after luke gets on the boat, quinn leans down to help y/n. her skin is quick to fill with goosebumps, not yet prepared for the slight breeze and setting sun.
she wraps her towel around her before sitting, but the cloth only dries her from the lake, instead of keeping her warm.
"you cold?" quinn asks as he sits down in the drivers seat in front of y/n.
"yeah, and i forgot to grab a shirt," y/n admits, now realizing how excited she was to get on the boat to forget to grab one.
quinn silently hands her one of his vancouver canucks shirts that he was wearing earlier.
was it an excuse to see her wear one of his shirts again? maybe. and no, this wasn't the first time this scenario had happened.
she mutters a quick thank you, and slips the warm shirt over her body. it bunched up around her waist.
as quinn pulled away back in the direction of the lake house, y/n couldn't help but let her curiosity peak as she turned her head towards jack and gabriella.
gabriella was laying down, with her head in his lap while he ran his fingers through her hair. y/n could only wish she was in gabriella's position. she felt foolish sometimes when it comes to her feelings with jack. she felt as though he'd never feel the same, or she'd never be enough for him. but his green eyes and perfect smile, and beautifully warm personality pulled her back in every time.
y/n looks away, feeling foolish again as she wipes her eyes of the tears starting to form. she's twenty-to for gods sake. she shouldn't be feeling like this.
as luke and quinn continued talking near the front of the boat, y/n brought her knees up to her chest and leaned her head against quinn's back.
she let the sound of the waves, the lull of the boat, and the warmth radiating off of quinn help relax her. she wasn't going to let jack and some dumb blonde ruin her summer.
wait, she didn't say dumb out loud, did she?
â Ë ïœĄ â àšà§ Ë
y/n woke up the next morning, now regretting her decision to go straight to bed after the barbeque, and not bothering to change out of her swimsuit or shower. she was still wearing quinn's canucks shirt.
no one could blame her though. watching the guy you've been in love with forever latch onto someone else the whole day made her have a low appetite, and all she wanted to do was sleep.
she picked out a simple outfit, consisting of black jean shorts and a baby pink tank top. she ran towards the upstairs bathroom, thankful to hog all the hot water before anyone else could.
with her shower completed and hair finally brushed out, she went back into her room, but was surprised to see quinn laying sideways on her bed.
"i didn't think anyone else was awake," she pulled quinn's gaze away from his phone.
"no one else is, just me," she nods at his response.
"what exactly are you doing in my room at eight in the morning?"
quinn sits up, "we're going to the bakery down the road and picking up bagels for everyone," he explains.
"and i have to go with you why?" she asks, however she starts putting on her shoes anyway.
he shrugs, "you just happened to be awake." 'i just want more time with you' he thought, but couldn't tell her the true reason.
"fine quinnifer, lead the way," she used the nickname she knows he hates, but he lets out a low chuckle before leaving her room.
y/n loves being in the car with quinn, simply because he lets her be in control of music. jack and luke never let her.
she picks her summer playlist before telling quinn all about her most hated class this past semester at umich. he listens intently, and even interjects with a few reactions.
as quinn parks in front of the small bakery, y/n decided to wait in the car, insisting she can't miss her favorite song.
y/n lets her eyes wander. they look over to the beach on her left, maybe she can convince the brothers to go there for her birthday tomorrow. she then watches a family walk into the bakery. the two parents and happily swinging a little girl between them. then her eyes switch to quinn at the counter. she watches his smile grow only slightly when he steps up to the counter to order. she looks over his dark brown hair, and how soft it seems this morning. her gaze shifts to the slight stubble starting to grow on his chin. she notices the viens in his hands she's never noticed before as he grabs the plastic bag from the worker.
she jumps out of her trance when quinn unlocks the car, making her realize she was just checking quinn out.
checking. quinn. out.
she must've been getting sick, or maybe she was just really hungry. she never thought of quinn romantically. it was always jack. the only time it had gotten remotely close to that with quinn was when he visited her at her dorm room 'just because'. he surprised her with concert tickets to her favorite artist, got her a new lego set, and a basket full of her favorite snacks.
"you okay over there?"
y/n jumps slightly, but nods, "yeah, why?"
"you like zoned out pretty hard."
y/n nods again, "i'm fine."
quinn doesn't question it, and starts driving back to the house. he takes notice of the way y/n fidgets with the plastic bag now in her lap, but doesn't bring it up.
the two finish the drive in silence, the only noise being the pop songs playing from y/n's playlist.
quinn and y/n enter the house, and hear shuffling in the kitchen. they expect it to be luke, or ellen or jim, but it's jack and gabriella.
jack and gabriella kissing.
jack has her pushed up against the kitchen island, lifting her shirt slightly while she's grabbing onto his hair like her life depended on it.
y/n feels her insides flip and she just looks down at the floor as she lets out a shuddered breath. was it selfish she thought she'd never see jack with anybody besides herself? yes, but she knew that.
"hey," quinn catches their attention, "are you done shoving your tongue down your friends' throat?" he eyes jack. "we got breakfast."
y/n can't look at the sight of jack and gabriella. she feels like an idiot. a hopelessly in love, idiot.
"i'm not hungry," she mumbles while walking behind quinn before jogging upstairs and walks towards her room.
she groans on frustration as she feels tears pool at her eyes. she can't believe she's crying over this. she can't believe she's been in love with jack for so long, for it to go no where between them.
she thought he was distant yesterday, but she thought that might've been jet lag, or first day tiredness. she didn't think it was her fault.
she didn't think she did anything wrong towards jack, so why had he been off towards her?
was it only towards her? has he been like this with luke and quinn before they arrived to the lake house?
a knocking takes y/n out of her own head, however that's when she realizes she's started struggling to breathe. her flowing tears aren't helping the situation either.
"y/n? are you okay?" quinn's voice is calm outside. a complete three-sixty to how y/n is feeling on the inside.
she tries to answer, but nothing comes out but a strangled whine.
quinn comes inside. his eyes widen slightly at the girl in front of him.
"woah, woah, woah," he immediately walks over to her and wipes under her eyes. "you're okay," his voice is soft, but her heartbeat over powers it.
"c'mere," he brings her closer, so close that her head is pressing against the bottom of his collar bone. he rocks her slowly back and forth, glad when he feels her arms reach around his torso.
she shudders against him as her body keeps shaking, something she didn't notice was happening before.
"i feel so stupid," she admits. her voice is muffled and shaking against quinn's body.
quinn shakes his head, "you're not stupid y/n."
y/n nods in disagreement, "but i am quinn," she sniffles, "i've been in love with jack for years and he's only hurt me more than he's cared about me. i've practically thrown myself at him, and he just doesn't see me. he'll always see me as a little sister, or luke's best friend."
"that's not true y/n," quinn argues again.
y/n pulls back, her breathing slightly better than it was before.
"but it is true quinn. he was the only one that didn't come to my high school graduation. you and luke did, hell even your parents did. he was the one to forget to pick me up at the airport, so i had to wait for an uber to go to his game. and at another game when they won, he hugged all of you guys, except for me. he couldn't even look in my direction when him and luke met us after the game. i don't know what i've done wrong to him, i just don't quinn."
y/n doesn't realize her breathing has only picked up again, making her last few words slur together and come out fast and breathy. quinn simply pulls her back against him.
"i'm sorry," y/n cries into his chest, now all of her emotions colliding with one another, making her cry again. "i'm sorry quinn."
quinn is quick to shush her apologies, muttering comforting words, in between placing kisses over her hair.
the two stayed like that for about five minutes, before quinn noticed y/n's breathing even out again, and her sniffles stopped. he didn't mind how tear stained his shirt was right now, he only cared if y/n was okay.
"would a bagel cheer you up? i can go get one and bring it up here for you," quinn offers, "we can even watch a movie if you want. just hide up here."
y/n nods and whispers, "yes please."
quinn kisses her one last time on the top of her head, and rubs her back once more before exiting her room. she figures she'll get comfortable, so she changes into sweatpants and gets under the covers, waiting for quinn to come back.
minutes later, quinn returns with two paper plates. he hands y/n the everything bagel.
"an everything bagel. one side with cream cheese and the other side with butter," quinn watches a smile show up on her face.
"did you-"
"yes i toasted it."
"thanks quinn."
for the rest of the day, quinn does his best to get y/n's mind off of jack. if he was being honest, he knew this day would come eventually. the day y/n stopped having feelings for jack.
he knew it would happen when he got a call from y/n at two in the morning. jack had dragged her to a party, but then left her there, claiming he found the hottest girl to go home with.
y/n embarrassingly called quinn to come and pick her up.
if she called him any time, anywhere, he'd pick her up in a heartbeat.
â Ë ïœĄ â àšà§ Ë
quinn and y/n weren't sure when they fell asleep, or how long they'd been asleep, but both were startled awake with luke's consistent knocking on her door.
"we're making a fire if you wanna join!" he calls out, before they hear his heavy footsteps walking downstairs.
"so glad to know he's not worried about where i am," quinn jokes while stretching.
y/n turns and laughs with him, and feels a blush creeping up her neck as her eyes lock onto quinn's shirt riding up slightly. letting her eyes get a peak at his boxers peaking out from his shorts. she quickly averts her gaze before she gets caught.
"do you want to change into something warmer? i can just meet you outside by the firepit."
y/n nods, "jeez it's already getting dark? how long did we sleep?"
quinn finally checks his phone, "six hours," he shows his phone to y/n, making her see a bright '4:00 pm'.
she only chuckles, "i'll meet you out back q."
he decides to ignore the flutter in his heart at the use of his nickname. he closes her door behind him and makes his way downstairs.
when y/n arrives outside, now adorning one of luke's devils hoodies, she takes the only open camping chair left opposite of quinn. him and jim are standing and talking, while every one else is sat around the fire.
"hey sleeping beauty," luke jokes as y/n sits down beside him.
"yeah, yeah," she ignores with a smile on her face.
however her face drops involuntarily at the sight of jack and gabriella. they're sitting in one camping chair, gabriella on jack's lap, as he's whispering god knows what in her ear to make her laugh like a hyena.
y/n simply turns and starts a conversation with luke.
"are you excited for your birthday tomorrow?" luke asks.
y/n nods eagerly, "yeah, i've always loved having my birthday at the lake house."
"well i just know you're going to love my gift," luke smiles.
"i love your gifts every year luke."
the two chuckle before luke excuses himself to use the bathroom. this leaves y/n alone with her thoughts.
her interesting thoughts. her very recently quinn obsessed thoughts.
she tries justifying it though. how can she not? he helped her get over a panic attack earlier in the day, and honestly has been nothing but sweet to her since she's gotten here. something jack hasn't even thought about doing.
y/n took her time by herself to truly think about where she stood with jack. sure, he probably didn't know about her insane feelings towards him, and maybe that was for the better. just like before, she feels like such an idiot for now wasting years of her life on a boy who would never even fathom dating someone like her.
maybe it's better this way, she thinks, as he eyes now look over towards quinn. he's still talking with jim.
y/n is enthralled by the way the orange hues of the fire light his face. he's wearing a backwards baseball cap, that y/n simply wants to take off to see his soft long hair underneath.
her eyes roam over his face. over his relaxed eyebrows, and the way his eyes move from listening to jim to watching the fire crack and spark. over his perfect nose. the nose she's only recently thought about kissing. over his cheeks and the way his stubble is growing, making him look more manly (and more hot in y/n's opinion). over his curved lips, as y/n wonders what it would feel like to k-
quinn's eyes meet hers.
she got caught like a deer in headlights.
but she can't look away.
and neither can he.
â Ë ïœĄ â àšà§ Ë
"happy birthday to you!"
a chorus of off key singing comes to an end as y/n blows out the candles of her personal red velvet cake. all three brothers would always make fun of her for red velvet being her favorite. she simply just thought it was prettier than every other cake flavor. plus it tasted amazing with cream cheese frosting.
however all three brother's weren't present. only two were. luke and quinn. one on each side of y/n on the large couch, as ellen and jim sat on the loveseat besides them.
y/n didn't want to admit it bothered her, but he always there with with her on her birthday. but when she realized gabriella wasn't in the house either, she had a good feeling neither of them would be showing up any time soon.
ellen and jim gave their present first, loving how excited y/n got when she opened the box to find even more pairs of mix-matchable swimsuits. they knew her a little too well.
luke got her two lego sets. one new marvel one of groot, and a set of sunflowers to put with the other lego flowers both him and quinn have gotten her over the past few years.
quinn was next, and to say y/n was shocked would be an understatement. the bag was small, and she pulled out a tiny white box. inside was a silver necklace, how quinn knew she wore silver and not gold, she'll never know. there were two dainty charms on the chain, and she held it closer to get a better look.
the one on the left was a hockey stick, which made her giggle since it just felt fitting for her. even though she's never played a game of hockey, it's surrounded her her entire life.
the second charm is the letter if her first initial, with the tiniest sparkling gems inside.
"q, i love it," she's quick to wrap her arms around him, before hugging luke, as well as jim and ellen.
just as she clasps the necklace around her neck and adjusts it, the front door opens.
jack and gabriella walked in hand and hand, surprised to see everyone sitting in the living room, staring at them as they arrived.
jack looks around, and notices the cake and opened gifts scattered on the coffee table.
"oh, um, happy birthday y/n," jack sends her a smile, as well as gabriella, but she knows neither of them mean it.
"thanks jack," she immediately begins playing with the new necklace, a habit she didn't know she'd have.
"why don't you go get your gift for her jack?" ellen suggests.
jack awkwardly looks between his mom and y/n.
"i forgot to get her something, sorry."
his voice was low, and talked as if she wasn't in the room with them.
y/n shakes her head, "it's fine, really."
jack nods, before grabbing gabriella's hand and leading her upstairs, until they hear a door close.
"i swear we have to go talk some sense into that boy," ellen exclaims.
jim agrees, and the two get up and go towards their own room, honestly not feeling like dealing with their middle son's raging hormones.
the rest of the day practically revolved around y/n. she got to pick whether they hang out in the pool or go on the lake (obviously she picked the lake). she picked which movie to watch while the group ate leftover barbeque. then she got to pick where to go out for dinner. she sat in between quinn and luke (quinn pulled her chair closer to him before she sat down, not that she'd notice) and ate the most amazing lobster roll she thinks she's ever had.
as the night started winding down, everyone went into their bedrooms. however y/n wasn't tired yet, even after showering and finally letting the birthday excitement leave her body.
for probably the thirtieth time this week, her mind can't help but be drawn to quinn. but also to jack.
she was certain she was over jack. her hopeless little crush on him over the years has finallt fizzled out like a sad firework. and honestly, she feels like a weight has been lifted off her.
years of trying to impress him, and look good for him, and try to make him laugh, all down the drain.
but she wasn't sad about it.
her mind then drifted back to quinn. her hand subconsciously reaches for the necklace, moving the charms back and forth on the chain.
was she falling for the wrong hughes brother this whole time? she thought.
quinn has always been nice to her. always cared about her, physically and emotionally. she remembers when she was eight, him being ten, and him worrying about her when she got heartbroken when she lost her favorite stuffed animal on the way to the lake house.
that whole first week he tried cheering her up by bringing her stuffed animals from his own room, to try and find one she loved.
she giggled at the thought.
she wondered what quinn was doing. was he asleep already? or watching one of his favorite tv shows? maybe he's downstairs getting a midnight snack. it'd probably be leftovers from dinner.
she wondered how he was doing right now. was he upset at jack for forgetting her birthday earlier? or was he happy y/n had a good birthday regardless of the middle hughes mishaps.
the more y/n sat and pondered over the oldest hughes brother, the more she realized she's falling.
this wasn't exactly an over night sensation however.
don't get her wrong, she did have an insanely long crush on jack. but something about quinn managed to captivate her and draw her in closer to him over time.
"shit," y/n whispers.
she's fallen for quinn hughes.
she decides it's just her delirious and tired state doing all the thinking right now. she gets out from under her warm covers. maybe a splash of cold water on her face will help. she's seen it in movies, so it must work.
what she didn't know, was that the boy on her mind was standing right outside her closed bedroom door. he's been there for no longer than three minutes. his hand was in his pocket, a third charm encased in a little mesh bag. one he didn't think she'd want. but one he knows he needs her to wear.
he's made up his mind. screw jack for messing up his chances in the past. quinn knew he was in deep when it comes to y/n. he was just an idiot for not doing anything about it before. all because he knew how y/n felt towards jack. he didn't want to be in the middle of anything. but in reality, it was jack being in the middle of quinn and y/n.
quinn debated on turning back around and just going to his room. he didn't even think of the possibility of y/n being alseep.
he still knocked.
well, he would've knocked. if there was a door there.
y/n and quinn were now inches apart from each other.
"hi," she whispers.
"hey," he whispers back.
"i didn't think anyone was still awake," she voices.
quinn shakes his head, "just couldn't sleep."
a moment of silence passes as the two simply look into each others eyes. eyes that are saying a million words, yet their mouths aren't moving.
quinn takes a step towards y/n, and she doesn't move back.
"can i ask you a question?" he asks.
she nods, "yeah, anything."
quinn takes a deep breath, "please tell me you're over jack."
"what?" the question catches y/n off gaurd, before she can truly respond.
"before i do this, just," he pauses, "please tell me you're over jack."
y/n nods, but her eyebrows are still scrunched in confusion.
"i need to hear it," quinn responds.
"i'm over jack."
after those three words leave y/n's lips, quinn takes ahold of y/n's jaw, bringing his lips to hers.
just as y/n was about to move her hands to hold onto quinn's waist, he pulls away, still leaving only inches between them.
their mingled breaths linger between them, but not for long as y/n pulls quinn towards her, kissing him again. it's more emotional than the last kiss, filled with longing and desire.
y/n pulls on his black long sleeve shirt, pulling him into her room. without disconnecting their lips, he closes the door behind him. quinn's mouth moves to her neck, kissing and sucking lightly at the skin, as her hands roam to his front, reaching underneath his shirt.
"wait," quinn pulls away, both of them now panting. "i have one last gift for you."
y/n watches him reach into his pajama pants pocket, seeing something silver peeking out of a mesh bag.
"quinn, what is-"
"this might be really stupid, but it was a good idea at the time. um," he pauses, dropping the contents on the bag into his palm. y/n gasps at the small 'Q' charm. "if you'll be mine, i figured you might want my initial. y'know, like that one taylor swift song you love."
"quinn, oh my gosh," y/n's at a loss for words.
"can you put it on the necklace for me?" she asks him, making him nod and comply instantly.
he's quick to clasp it around the chain, falling in line with the other two charms. quinn's finger and thumb rub over the newly added charm.
"does this mean you'll be mine?"
y/n nods, and before she can get a real response out, quinn pulls gently on the necklace, drawing her towards him to push their lips together once again.

SWEET AS SUGAR
` . . ââ đčairing luke hughes x female! reader
đą. luke comes to ask his pretty neighbor for some sugar . . . but really he just wants to see her ïœĄïœĄ đc 2218 & fluff oneshot đčart đžne
âčđč this fic is a little birthday gift to my bestie @lesrflms I hope you enjoy it, ily á”á”
âWhat should we make tonight, dumplings or tomato soup?â you hummed as you skimmed through your family-made cookbook, eyes raking over the many different recipes before glancing at your cat moose sitting on his personal stool in your kitchen.Â
He tilted his head animatedly at you as if he was chastising you for even having to ask, making you chuckle and look back at the cookbook, mumbling to yourself âTomato soup it isâÂ
You placed the cookbook on your book stand before picking up your phone to connect your favorite playlist to your speakers, having a habit of having to cook with background noise. You moved around your kitchen smoothly as you started placing the ingredients on your kitchen island, singing along to the wallows song that was playing. Â
Before you could start cutting some tomatoes and garlic, you heard a knock at your door, confusing you since you weren't expecting any guests. Maybe it was Mrs. Shelly, your sweet elderly neighbor who always needed help with her electronics. Moose quickly jumps off his stool and runs into the living room to hide; he is not fond of guests.Â
You set your knife down on your cutting board and pause your music before walking around your kitchen island and to your front door, unlocking it before you slowly open it. Your eyes widen slightly at the unexpected person standing on the other side. You leaned against your door with a small welcoming smile âluke?âÂ
Your eyes settle on the said man who stood in front of you with a shy smile on his lips, wearing a pair of sweatpants and a Michigan University hoodie. Luke's eyes widened slightly, but not in surprise like yours, but in awe. You stood there with a small smile on your lips, clad in a brown sweater, some jeans, and your snoopy cooking apron. He cleared his throat before saying âUh hi, can I um have some of your sugar â I mean borrow, some sugarâÂ
âYou went down a whole level to ask me for a cup of sugar?â you asked slowly as you took in his question, tilting your head and resting it against your door as you watched him shyly nod. This was the first time you had seen him since last week when you first saw him, you were busy with college while he was busy with hockey â an interesting fact you found out about him during your daily texting sessions. Your eyes furrowed and you were quick to ask âHow did you even know my apartment number?âÂ
âI remember you mentioning I was on top of you ââ your eyes widened in humor at his wording while his eyes widened in horror. Luke's hands that were nervously fidgeting in his front hoodie pocket were quick to slip out and shake as he quickly tried to fix his words âMy apartment I mean! â not my body â i umâ Â
âCome in lukeâ you giggled, cutting him off from his nervous ranting. You took a step back and opened your door wider so he could come in. Luke let out a relieved breath and walked into your apartment, slightly taken aback by the warmth and comfort he felt immediately. You closed the door behind him and walked to your kitchen, to get him a cup of sugar.Â
Luke looked around your warm apartment which was a completely different layout than his and Jack's. The kitchen and living room had an open floor plan; he could faintly see a curved doorway trim that led somewhere and a spiral staircase in a corner of the living room that led to the second story. The back wall of the living room was made of brick and had a lot of natural light from the large windows. He noticed a few snoopy collections around the living room. It felt like a home.Â
âHere's your sugarâ your voice broke him out of him admiring your home, luke looked away from a picture frame you had on a shelf, it looked like a family picture. Luke smiled at you and moved closer to the island to grab the small cute container of sugar âOh, thanksâÂ
âSo what are you making?â you asked him as you leaned against the island, a curious smile on your lips as you rested your palms on the quartz countertop. Luke tilted his head slightly in confusion and you couldn't help but chuckle at how endearing he looked. You clarified for him with a slow nod âWith the sugar..âÂ
âOh, umm muffins?â Luke said softly but it came out as more of a question, not confident in his answer. Your eyes light up at his answer, physically perking up at the mention of one of your favorite foods, and honestly, you were a little shocked at the idea of Luke baking muffins, he didn't really give off the impression of knowing how to bake âOh really what kind?â
Luke internally started to panic as he tried to think of a type of muffin, any other day he would be able to name many different types of muffins, but right there under your gaze, his eyes locked with your pretty ones, had his mind going blank. Luke brought one of his hands up to rub at the back of his nape as he answered unconfidently âErmm grapeâÂ
âGrape muffins,â you said slowly as you narrowed your eyes at him, he nodded but you could see he was unsure of his answer. And it was all starting to make sense in your head the more you thought about it. You folded your hands in front of you, tilting your head slightly âYou didn't actually need the sugar did you?âÂ
Luke blushed in slight embarrassment from being caught in his lie, dropping his hand from his nape to also lean forward against your kitchen island. Giving you a bashful smile as he quickly confessed âNo . . . i just â wanted to see youâÂ
Your eyes widened at his unexpectedly sweet confession, you did not expect him to be so forward. Luke was worried that him being forward made you uncomfortable, but really you were just too flustered to know what to say next. In truth, you also really wanted to see him, but your busy schedule just wasn't allowing that. Those nightly texting sessions had quickly become your favorite part of your day.Â
âDo you want to stay for dinner?â you surprised the both of you with the sudden request, you smiled at him as you looked up at him through your eyelashes, you weren't ready for him to leave. Deep inside there was a small part of you that worried about the fact of you enjoying his presence so much, but you were quick to ignore it and push it down, instead focusing on the happy smile Luke had on his face.Â
âIâd love to, let me just let jack know i won't be homeâ luke pulled his phone out of his back pocket to text his older brother, ignoring the way his hands trembled. You smiled and nodded, letting him text his brother while you moved to your pantry, opening it and grabbing one of the few aprons you had hanging inside. Luke slipped his phone back into his pocket, ignoring the several texts from Jack asking who he was with, claiming that Luke's answer âdinner with a friendâ wasn't good enough because he had no friends besides him and their teammates.Â
Luke watched as you approached him with a smile, holding the apron out. He hesitantly grabbed it from your hands, asking slowly âuh what's thatâÂ
âYour apron sillyâ you laughed, Luke didn't question you anymore, slipping it on over his hoodie, a warm feeling spreading across his chest when he noticed it matched yours. You noticed that he was struggling to tie it behind his back so you were quick to walk around the kitchen island to help him âHere let me helpâÂ
âJust so you know, i'm not experienced in the kitchenâ Luke mumbled with a bashful smile, following you to stand by your side at the island once you finished tying his apron for him. You hummed in understanding, sending him a teasing smile âDon't worry, i'll teach you all my secretsâÂ
âIâm looking forward to itâ luke smiled, his tone came out more flirty than he expected, but thankfully you didn't seem to care. You just giggled and dried off your hands after you washed them. Luke moved to stand in front of your sink, washing his hands, and smiling at the cute soap dispenser you had. After washing his hands, he dried them off and turned to look at you, watching as you pulled out another cutting board âWhat's on the menu chef?âÂ
âsoupe Ă la tomateâ you answered in your mother tongue, placing the tomatoes on the cutting boards.Â
âtomato soup?â he guessed with an unsure smile, trying to ignore the funny feeling in his stomach at how attractive you sounded speaking French. Well to be fair, anything you did, he was sure it would be attractive to him. You smiled and handed him a knife âtrĂšs bonâÂ
âI fear that's past my very low level of Frenchâ he chuckled as he watched you move closer to him, his breath hitching when you placed your soft hands over his, showing him how he should properly hold the knife and cut the tomato. You giggled as you translated your last sentence for him âVery goodâÂ
âHave you ever been to a game?â luke asked, turning his head to look at you, taking in your side profile that was illuminated by the oven light. The two of you were sitting on the floor in front of your oven, leaning back against the island as you waited for the right time to take out the homemade garlic cheese bread.Â
The two of you had finished making the tomato soup not too long ago, letting it cool down on the stove while you made sure the bread didn't burn. Luke never really was a fan of cooking, but being by your side, getting to know you better, and sharing the kitchen with you was something he hoped would happen again . . . very soon.Â
âI've been once, my friend ethan is a really big fanâ you answer with a small smile as you look back at the memory, you turn to look at him, giving him a bashful smile as you confess âhonestly i don't understand the game, i just cheer when he doesâÂ
âI can teach you!â Luke eagerly says with a grin, his mind exploding with thoughts of you watching the game, a confused but cute look on your face as you tried to understand. But one thought stuck longer and made his heart beat faster, you at his game, cheering for him and wearing his jersey. He blushes and says a lot softer âIf you want of courseâÂ
âIâd like that, i mean it's the least i could do after bossing you around my kitchen for the past half hourâ You gave him a teasing smile, you honestly looked forward to the idea of him teaching you about the sport he loves so much. Luke chuckles and shakes his head softly, fidgeting with the fabric of his pants as he replies âI enjoyed it, i wouldn't mind doing it againâÂ
âI'll keep that in mindâ you hummed with a small nod, tearing your eyes away from him to look back at the oven, your mouth watering at the sight. The kitchen was filled with comfortable silence for a few moments. You smile and softly bump your shoulder into his arm, teasing him âMaybe next time we can make those grape muffins you were so excited to makeâÂ
Luke scrunches his nose in distaste at the mention of grape muffins before he breaks out into a fit of laughter, you were quick to join him. Your eyes take in his side profile and how cute he looked when he laughed. You really liked the sound of it. He tilted his head back against the island, letting out a happy sigh as he caught his breath from laughing before tilting his head to lock eyes with you âI have a feeling you're never going to let me live that downâÂ
âSorry Hughes but you're stuck with meâ Your lips curved into a teasing smile, not aware of how heavy your words really meant to him. Lukeâs eyes softened and quickly dropped down to your lips, his eyes tracing the pretty curve of your lips before locking eyes with you once again, giving you a charming smile âNo complaints hereâÂ
Your breath hitched at the unwavering eye contact, the strong gazes made you feel like you were in a spell, like you wanted to lean into his touch. A feeling you have never felt before. Neither of you wanted to look away, and neither of you knew what to say next. You couldn't help but feel extremely flustered under his eyes and the words he oh so sweetly said to you. Did he know how he made you feel? Was it obvious? Your thoughts were running in your mind like wildfire, only being saved from them by the obnoxious ding! from the oven.Â
The bread was ready.Â

school bell rings, walk me home, sidewalk chalk covered in snow, lost my gloves, you give me one
"are you okay, miss?" a voice asks from behind you, and you jump.
it's a boy. he's real pretty, features the perfect balance between masculine built and delicate feminine.
you're so sure that you're fifty shades of red right now, but he smiles kindly at you.
"sorry, it's just you look really cold." he points at your hands, and the fact that your teeth are chattering.
you realize that you're still silent.
you hate that you're so painfully shy. it's especially hard after you moved from your hometown for work, where the little amount of friends had to bid you goodbye with worry.
sure, you talk to your coworkers, but it's not the same.
"I-i'm okay." you try to smile, but it comes out more like a grimace.
jack, you find out his name is, was raised by his mother to never leave a lady in distress (you almost laugh at that). he offers you his gloves, still warm from his own hands. you thank him quietly, and he grins wide, "you're welcome, sweetheart."
the sidewalk is still covered in snow, but he walks you back to your apartment building, where the two of you find out something else you have in common: you're practically neighbours.
he lives only 4 or 5 doors down from you.
he drops you off, brushing your fingers with his own bigger ones as he tells you to come find him if you need anything at all.
as he watches you enter the safety and warmth of your own apartment, he frowns.
why would he do that? normally he wouldn't care about this kind of stuff, but you looked so cold and down.
so when you offered him that sweet, shy smile, he melts despite the cold jersey weather.
it's weird, because you're very pretty, but he doesn't have the itch to fuck you and leave you.
he wants to know why you're here, what you do, you're favourite colour.
his phone dings with the notification of some instagram model he met up with a week ago. he sighs, turning back from his own door to go meet her.
for some reason, he doesn't want to go.

"wanna hang out?", yeah, sounds like fun, video games, you pass me a note
you bite your lip, and retract your hand once more. you want to knock, but you...
just do it! you tell yourself, and you knock quickly, wincing.
a boy who is decidedly not jack answers the door.
"uh, hi?" he's tall, with curly hair and a lanky body.
you freeze up a little.
fortunately, jack pops up from behind.
he calls your name, with excitement and surprise. it makes something warm bloom in your chest.
"I brought you guys cookies?" it comes out more like a question, "I brought you guys cookies, because you walked me home last week."
normally, luke would be teasing his older brother - and the fact he was cheesing like an idiot still - but he smells the cookies first.
to your surprise, the younger boy grabs you by the wrist to drag you into the apartment, thanking you for the baked goods.
he offers you a hug, introducing himself.
you're a bit unnerved, but he's so cute, like a little puppy that you hug him back, patting his shoulder while stifling a smile. he reminds you a bit of your own little brother.
jack pouts. no way luke got a hug before him. so he sidles up to you, tucking you under his arm.
"wanna hang out with us? we're playing video games."
you don't know much, but you do know you like how he's looking at you, all soft brown eyes and crooked smile.
so you tuck yourself into the couch.
you find out a lot about both of them: they're brothers who play for the same nhl team - impressive - they can finish a whole batch of cookies in 20 minutes, and they have lots of friends.
people start popping up into the apartment, nico, johnny and so many more large, kind boys who hug you in greeting.
you almost don't mind, especially when jack texts you from across the room.
he's watching you from the kitchen where you're speaking in choppy german to nico. he's worried, because the first time he met you, you were so shy and shaking in your boots.
you all good? I can walk you home if the boys are tiring you out
you look up, a small grin on your face as you shake your head at him.
you look so at home on his couch with his friends, that something blind and unfamiliar stirs in his stomach. he ignores an incoming text from the instagram model he met up with, in favour to watch nico explain german grammar to you.
â
ă»ă»ă»ă»â
ă»ă»ă»ă» â
ă»ă»ă»ă»â
light pink sky up on the roof, sun sinks down, no curfew, twenty questions, we tell the truth
jack thinks you're an angel. he'd come back to the apartment after a really hard game, battered and bruised. you show up to his door like you have been for a while, sometimes when it's just the two of you, sometimes when many of the boys are there.
this time, you're holding a bag in your hands. he sighs as he opens the door, falling into your arms.
"oh-! jack, you're too heavy!" you exclaim, trying to hold his weight. he pouts, leading you to the couch. he pushes you down gently, and you let him.
he snuggles up to you, head cradled by your chest.
he waits for you to coo and fuss over him, because you're just so kind and he finds this unprecedented comfort in you.
you feel like home, despite only knowing him for a few months.
"you okay?" you ask, and he pushes his head into your hands. you smile, getting the message.
you finally scratch his head, and he practically purrs. he settles into you, full weight like a thick blanket as you push through his hair with your nails.
"there you go," you murmur, quiet and loving. he thinks you'd be a good mom someday, and his heart twists when he thinks of you with someone else, making a home.
"can you scratch my back?" he knows he's being whiny, but you brush your thumb over his cheek and nod.
you're about to slip your hand under his shirt, but he sits up, tugging it over his head and returning to you like he always seems to do these days.
he slides his arms under your back, rubbing his head to your stomach.
you flush red, something unfamiliar spiking through your blood. he's all thick, soft muscles, unlike the vanity ones you see on some guys. raw, simple strength to take the hits and deliver them in his sport.
he's so handsome.
you scratch your nails down his back and he shivers.
"cold?" you hum, but he shakes his head.
after a while, he lets you get up because your legs are numb.
"you're too heavy," you grin again, and he complains that you're calling him fat.
he's ridiculous, with his abs under soft skin and big biceps. he still hasn't put his shirt back on.
"so, what's in the bag?" he asks, and you brighten up.
you dump it out on to the couch: it's face masks, eye masks and skin care.
"I like to relax with this, so I thought maybe you would like it?" you ask shyly, "we don't have to-"
"no!" jack exclaims, throwing everything into the bag and standing, "I want to. see what the hype is about."
he's seen the cute couple pictures online with the girl doing the guy's skincare; something about you suggesting it makes his feel ten feet tall.
so that's how he ends up with you on his bathroom counter, himself between your legs as you rub shaving cream onto his face.
"you better not slice me up," he pokes your tummy, and you giggle.
"don't worry, jackpot," you use his nickname, "cant' have the fans mourning your pretty face."
you carefully shave off his stubble, eyes concentrated.
you're so close, and you smell you, and you're so careful with him he wants to kiss you and give you his heart.
you hold his hair back as he washes his face. the act is so intimate, and the whole scene is so domestic that it makes him homesick for something he's never had.
"okay, so I'll put the eye masks on you first, then the clay one."
it's actually pretty relaxing, he has to admit. the eye masks are cool, and the clay mask is a little tight, but he likes to see you smooth it onto your own face, matching his.
he takes his phone, and you slide under his arm, linking yours around his waist.
the both of you smile wide for the mirror selfie, and he makes it his lock screen.
after both of you wash the masks from you - admittedly smoother - skin, he orders a pizza, and you make your way up to the roof.
the light pollution is too bad and he knows that the stars won't be visible, but the pink-inked sky is pretty as your smile.
the two of you talk about everything and nothing: some trick he managed to pull during practice, your co-workers pending divorce, something funny his mom said.
he wishes he could stay here forever, with you.
you, with your soft hair and smile, his too-big hoodie over your shoulders as you lean on him.
he likes seeing you all sleepy and vulnerable, answering his questions quietly.
"do you want a boyfriend?" he asks as the sun goes to bed.
"of course I do," you murmur, "but I just want the right person, at the right time."
he smiles at that. he wants to be that person for you.

ă»ă»ă»ă»â
you've been stressed out lately? yeah, me too, something gave you the nerve, to touch my hand
"oh, shit." you swear softly, and sophie, your co-worker turned best friend - don't let jack hear that - apologizes.
"sorry! sorry! don't move, bro!" she rubs where the curling iron touched the back of your neck.
"that's gonna leave a mark. I'm sorry, sweetie." she fusses, and you tell her it's okay.
luke and jack are having a party for new years at their place, so you and sophie take that chance to dress up for once.
your makeup is done, so is your hair. you have to admit, sophie's done a real good job.
"yeah, dude. we look hot."
you're wearing a pretty red dress, with thin straps and material that clung to your body.
you were unsure, but Sophie hyped you up enough for you to put it on, and you felt really confident.
except you were a little scared at how short it was.
"hey, girl!" luke exclaimed when you entered their apartment. "you look great. hey, soph!"
he handed you both a drink, scurrying off to greet someone else.
the two of you link hands, trying and laughing while bulldozing through the crowd to get to the living room.
some guy catches soph's eye, and you encourage her to go off and talk to him.
nico finds you, being pushed around by the throng of people, and tucks you under his arm like your a football.
you giggle a little as he manages to navigate the way. jack's sitting on one of the arm chairs, and his eyes brighten when he sees you.
"special delivery!" nico pats your head like he would to his little sister, and you roll your eyes good-naturedly.
the only thing between you is many half-drunk hockey players and drinks on the ground. nico is about to pick you up like a cat, but jack hops his way over, swatting his hands.
"I got it, precious cargo, after all." he slips one hand under your thighs, and another arm wrapped round your waist so you're pressed against his vertically.
you cling to his neck as he makes his way back to his seat, turning you in his arms to fit you onto his lap.
"you look..." he breathes into your ear, "you look gorgeous, baby."
"thanks, jack."
the night continues like normal, until between the sheer amount of people in the apartment and jack's chest pressed against you is making you over heat. as you laugh at one of johnny's jokes you sweep your hair over your shoulder to let your neck breathe.
you feel jack tense beneath you, and he lifts you to stand.
"I-i need a drink," his eyes are panicked and shaky. he bolts, and you stand to go after him. nico and Luke call after you, concerned.
you find him on the roof, leaning over the banister, shoulders shaking.
"jack, honey?" you ask, slipping a hand between his shoulder blades, "do you feel sick?"
the cool air makes goosebumps rise on your skin, even more so when he turns to you, teeth grit.
"no, m'fine. go back to the party."
"not until you tell me-"
"why didn't you tell me you were seeing someone?" he blurts out, refusing to look at you.
"huh?" you ask.
"why didn't you tell me? I thought we told each other everything."
"what are you-"
"you don't need to pretend. I know-" he shudders, like it's painful for him to say this, "I know you're..."
"jack-" you start, but he grabs your hands, new determination in his eyes as he draws you close.
"you should know that I'm in love with you. so you have options, baby." his lip is quivering, and his eyes are rimmed with red.
"I-"
"I could treat you better than he could. and I wouldn't hide it, either. we would be so good together..." he's rubbing the length of your arms now, trying to warm you up.
"we already work so well together. we're best friends and you make me laugh so much. you make me feel safe and tethered."
he continues, "and...jeez, baby, you're fucking gorgeous. I just want to press you against a wall and..." he's talking low and heavy in your ear, and you lean closer to him.
"please, just consider me. I wouldn't just leave a hickey on your neck behind your ear and not celebrate new years with you."
"what?" you asked, surprised, "no, that's not a hickey. sophie burnt my neck while curling my hair."
jack colours a brilliant shade of fire work red.
he just got all in his head, seeing you dolled up and loose, that when he saw the mouth sized mark on the smooth nape of your neck, his only thought was: that should've been me.
"fuck."
you've got a teasing smile on your face now, "you loooove me!"
"I am a dumbass."
"a dumbass who loves me." you grin, cupping his neck, smoothing circles over the skin there.
"my offer still stands," he tells you, winding his arms around your waist.
"yes. I love you too, you idiot." the people throughout the apartment building are starting to chant.
3, 2, 1, happy new years!
"happy new years, baby." he says, and he presses his lips softly, and sweetly to yours.
he's so delicate, trying to make sure everything is perfect.
and it is, because he's with you, with the promise of more forever.

church bells ring, carry me home, rice on the ground looks like snow
"yeah, mom. I know, I've been eating good. my girl's taking care of me."
you hear jack's voice from where you're measuring rice in the pantry. he definitely thinks that the pantry doors are thicker than they are.
you smile, because he takes such good care of you too: he washes your hair in the shower, he carries and stocks your groceries, he always makes sure you're fed and warm when you're too stressed.
and he takes care of you in other ways that makes you warm and all liquidy.
"I'm gonna make her my wife, mom. she's...she's the one. yes, I'll bring her to the lake house for the summer, but I'll have to ask first. okay. bye. love you too."
by that time you've made it out of the room, closer to him. when he says wife, you drop the whole bowl of rice you were holding.
"did you hear that?" jack's ears are pink, but he's got a cheesy smile on his face.
"yeah. you have a really loud voice, honey."
"call me that again." he asks, as you come to stand between his legs as he sits on the barstool of the kitchen counter.
"loud voice," you tease.
he laughs, and when the two of you quiet down, he rests his head on your shoulder.
"I mean it, y'know."
"we've been only dating for like a month," you protest weakly.
"and I can't wait to see you walk down the aisle to me."
"will you cry?"
"no," he lies, even though he's getting a little teary just thinking about it.
"hmm." you kiss him anyways, and Luke finds you there 10 minutes later, still wrapped up together with rice all over the floor.
"you guys are weirdos." he rolls his eyes, making a face as jack kisses your lips again.
"watch it, mister. you're talking to your future sister in law." you joke, and luke jumps, reaching for your hand.
"dude, were you fucking with me?" he whines, "I got all excited too."
jack hollers something insulting his intelligence as you laugh, watching the two boys.
â
ă»ă»ă»ă»â
ă»ă»ă»ă» â
ă»ă»ă»ă»â
feels like home, stay in bed, the whole weekend, it's nice to have a friend
jack kisses your forehead as he hands you a plate of food. you bite his cheek as he shrieks.
you laugh, sitting up so he can see his shirt that's practically falling off of your frame.
you and jack had a slow morning, the sun streaming over your naked bodies as you simply enjoyed each other's presence. around noon, he finally got up to shower.
you refused to join him because "no, the two of us showering together would not save water, it would probably waste more."
so he showered, sad and alone, and made breakfast after you went to clean yourself off.
now, watching you eat toast and watch his past game highlights from last weekend, he knows.
he knows it's going to be you, no matter what.
he knows it's you he wants to grow old with, and have three kids - two boys, one girl, he has the names all planned out - and that picket fence shit.
he knows it's you who'll take care of him with your soft hands and heart at the end of the day, and you'll be the one he'll protect and provide for too.
he knows that he loves you like the back of his hand.
and he knows you're his best friend, the love of his life.
so he knows that he wants to make you his wife.
he leans over to his bedside drawer and pulls out a box.
he got it the weekend after the two of you got together, and he's shaking as you turn to him with wide eyes.
"I love you. you're...you're it for me, baby. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and I promise to keep you safe and warm and always finish your plate when you're full," he knows you too well, because your left overs are already on his plate, "and I just want all of you. will you marry me?"
"yes," you breathe, tackling him into the bed with a delighted whoop.
there's no other words to describe it, it's so nice to have you.
it's so nice to have you forever, now.

(unedited)
The Hughes brothers had made a name for themselves over the past few years.Â
Professional athletes.Â
All top ten overall draft picks.Â
Captain of the Vancouver Canucks.Â
Hotshot forward for the New Jersey Devils.
And the rising star defensemen in the league.Â
They had certainly found a way to make every parent look at their own kid and wonder where they went wrong.Â
But no one really knew what absolute imbeciles the Hughes brothers truly were.Â
âIf you put down the pan, Iâll drop your phone.â Jack negotiates, his hands in the air, your phone swinging from the tips of his fingers. You glance down at your right hand, the cast iron pan gripped tightly before shooting your gaze back to Jack, whose face scrunches when he realises youâre not going to concede that easily.Â
âI donât understand why itâs such a big deal. You got secrets to hide or something?â Jack continues flipping the phone into his hand as he tries another passcode for the fifteenth time.Â
âNone of your business, Jack.â You sneer, lunging for the phone again, only for the hockey player to slip just slightly out of reach, his steps backing him towards the staircase.Â
Fuck, heâs gonna make a run for it.Â
âJust tell me what youâre hiding from me, and Iâll give you the phone back.â He quips
âOr I could knock you on your ass with a metal pan.â You respond, your gaze shooting up as you look at the man approaching from behind him. The phone is expertly snatched from Jackâs hands as he lets out a long whine in protest, his lips dropping into a pout as he watches his younger brother gently hand you back your phone.Â
âMaybe sheâs got a boyfriend and doesnât want you to ruin it for her.â Luke teases, giving you a smile as you mouth âthank youâ at him, holding your phone close to your chest.Â
âIf we werenât forced to be friends, I wouldnât think twice about dropping you.â You hiss, pointing an accusatory finger in the thiefâs direction before following his younger brother into the kitchen.Â
âYou would tell me though, right?â Jackâs voice carries as he follows you and Luke into the room âlike if you were seeing someone, youâd tell us?â He continues - sliding into one of the bar stools at the counter, dropping his chin into his hands. âYou wouldnât hide something like that?â You frown at Jack, tilting your head in confusion as Luke bustles about the kitchen pulling out the extra large party pack of chips and a freshly made container of salsa.Â
âWhy would I not hide something like that?â You question back, your words making Lukeâs eyebrows shoot up in surprise as he shoves a chip in his mouth, âI mean you guys hide your relationships all the time - isnât it normal at this age?â You add quickly noticing the way Jackâs face drops a little.Â
âFrom the public.â Luke notes quickly, before dipping another chip into the salsa.Â
âWe donât hide things from you.â Jack says softly, sliding off his seat and making his way out of the kitchen leaving your standing there in confusion.Â
âDonât look at me, I just want to eat my chips.â Luke huffs when you turn to glance up at him, his shoulders shrugging as the eldest of you walking in from the backyard, a towel wrapped around his waist, water already soaking through his t-shirt.Â
âWhat did I miss?â Quinn questions, as you groan and reach over stealing a handful of chips from the bag.Â
âNothing.â You huff, drawing yourself in salty goodness.Â
âShe has a boyfriend.â Luke says, letting out a groan as you shove your elbow into his side.Â
âAnd you didnât tell us?â Quinn asks, his head tilted as your frown deepens.Â
âI donât have a boyfriend, it was a hypothetical.â You shoot a glare at Luke, pointing your finger up at him, âconsider us enemies now, Warren.âÂ
âAnyway, she thinks it would be normal for her to hide a relationship from us if she was in one, and Jack got all pissy because we donât keep secrets from each other.â Luke shakes his head at your warning, handing you the bag as you go to reach for more chips.Â
âWell the point is moot, because I donât have a boyfriend.âÂ
âYeah but how can we trust you now, youâve been suspected as a liar and essentially confirmed you would if you could.â Quinn argues, leaning forwards on the kitchen counter with a teasing grin.Â
âI can one hundred percent confirm that I do not in any way shape or form have a boyfriend.â You swear, holding one hand against your chest and the other in the air, the two boys smiling as they watch your oath, âBesides Iâve never even been on a real date let alone had a relationship.â You sneer, shoving another chip in your mouth as the room falls silent.Â
âWhat?â Quinn is the one who breaks the silence, standing up straight as his brows furrow.Â
âHuh?â You pause your motions.Â
âYouâve never been on a date?âÂ
âYouâve never had a boyfriend?â The two brothers ask at the same time, both glancing at each other before looking back at you. âBut youâve brought people home, Iâve seen you.â Quinn continues, the bag of chips forgotten on the counter as you look around for an escape route.Â
âFirstly, donât be a creeper and secondly I said Iâm a dating virgin, Quinn, not a virgin virgin.â You snort, slowly side stepping the tallest brother as you beeline for the backdoor, hearing Quinn call out after you.Â
âLuke go get Jack, it seems the four of us have some talking to do.âÂ
+
+
âSo itâs in agreement.â Jack says as you all sit around the pool, your legs swishing the water as you grumble under your breath. âWe are going to woo you, give you the real dating experience.âÂ
âI donât understand why this has to happen at all.âÂ
âBecause we will show you how you should be treated on date, and in turn you can tell us who is the best daterâ Jack explains, his brothers nodding in agreement as you let out another long groan.Â
âSo youâre the ones actually using me, donât think I canât read between the lines, Rowden.â You huff, slipping your legs out of the pool and standing in your spot. âYou are using me to settle a bet arenât you?âÂ
âThere may be something like that.â Luke admits softly, his own legs dipped into the water as he ignores the dirty glare Jack sends him.Â
âWell now the cats out of the bag, may the best brother win.â The four of you are silent for a moment, each seeming to be deep in thought before Luke cuts in.Â
âHow do we decide who goes first?âÂ
âI suppose I should go first, considering it was my idea.â Jack responds, nodding his head in determination as he glances down at his watch before looking back towards you.Â
âIâll pick you up at six.â He says quickly ripping his phone out of his pocket and typing away quickly.Â
âWe live in the same house.âÂ
âJust be ready.â He yells as he presses his phone to his ear, talking softly into the device as he leaves the house, his keys pressed tightly in his hand.Â
âIâm going to regret agreeing to this arenât I?â You ask the other two, both of them just giving soft shrugs.Â
âIt might end up being fun.â Luke says, pulling his own phone out of his pocket pulling up google as he scrolls through his search results. You watch as Quinn stands from the deck chair rounding the pool behind you, his hands placed gently on your waist as he squeezes past, his lips pressed to your ear as he whispers, âweâre definitely going to have fun.âÂ
You shiver slightly as Quinn lets your waist go, the sudden rush of warm air behind you making goosebumps rise on your arms.Â
âSo, do you have anything youâre hoping for in particular?â Luke asks slowly, a sly smile on his face, as he waits expectedly for your answer. You let out a soft sigh, pushing some loose hair away from your face, âHonestly, I donât really know, I just wanted a quiet summer, I wasnât really expecting to be apart of a hometown bachelorette.âÂ
âThink of it more as a chance to see what you want from a date, besides competition can be fun sometimes.â Luke responds, quickly adding, âAnd you canât complain you love the bachelor.â You roll your eyes at his words but canât help to small smile tugging at your lips.Â
âGod I hate when youâre right.â
+
+
You flatten out your light green summer dress against your thighs as you look at the reflection in the mirror, jumping a little at a heavy knock on your bedroom door. âThereâs someone here for you.â Luke says as he pops his head through the slightly opened door, his mouth dropping open a little as he looks at your reflection.Â
âDo you think this is okay?â You start turning to face him, tucking your hair behind your ears as you chew on your bottom lip. âI donât know where heâs taking me, and I thought something cute but functionââÂ
âItâs perfect.â Luke cuts you off straightening his posture before clearing his throat and adding, âYou look perfect.â Luke looks away from you his neck burning a bright red as he clears his throat again.Â
âThanks, Lukey.â You coo as you pull your handbag off the bed patting his shoulder as you squeeze past him to leave your bedroom, quickly making your way downstairs skidding to a halt in front of the shoe bench by the front door - pulling on your black and white converse before making your way towards the voices in the kitchen.Â
âAre you going to tell me where weâre going or not?â You mumble as you stop by the counter double checking that you had everything you might need in your purse.Â
âNo that would ruin the surprise and if I tell you then itâll take away half the fuâ holy shit.â Your head shoots up at Jackâs interruption of himself, his mouth open in surprise his brother watching amused as he sputters.Â
âYes?â You question, glancing over at Quinn who glances between you and his bewildered younger brother before sending you an entertained grin.Â
âYouâre wearing that?â Jack stumbles.
âWhat, you donât like it?â You tease.Â
âNo, I do.â Jack rubs a hand down his face, his younger brother giving him a knowing pat on the back as he walks past him to grab a bottle of water from the fridge.Â
âShould I change? I donât want you to be distracted on our date.â You coo, slipping your purse higher on your shoulder as you glance down at your outfit again.Â
Maybe it is a little too much.
I mean itâs not like itâs a real date, and the low cut of the dress is going to make things difficult if heâs taking you to do an activity.Â
Jack can see your mind start to spin, your teeth digging into your low lip as you adjust the dress a few times, your shoulder sinking as you suddenly become too aware of yourself.Â
âNope, nope. We donât have time for you to change.â Jack interrupts your thought spiral, reaching forwards to clasp your hand in his, âI think I can make this work.â He says, taking one more long look down your body, working his hardest to hold in a grown before shooting a look at his older brother.Â
âWe will be home late. Donât wait up.â He yells as he drags you toward the front door, not giving either of his brothers time to respond as he slams it shut behind the two of you, ushering you to his car, opening the door for you as you slip inside.Â
âJack maybe I should change.â You grumble, crossing your arms over your chest as he slips into the drivers seat, his gaze flicking down to your bare legs, before focusing out the windscreen.Â
âNo.â He says quickly, moving to pull on his own seatbelt before glancing over at you, noticing your belt not pulled over your chest. âWe have places to be, my dear.â He adds, reaching over the centre console to grab hold of your seat belt, his hair tickling the side of your face as he pulls it over your chest, clicking the buckle into the slot, before dropping back into his own seat.Â
âWeâre on a slight time crunch.â He admits, glancing down at his watch before putting the car in reverse and backing out of the driveway.Â
You canât help but laugh at his urgency. âYou sound like youâre leaving the scene of a crime or something.âÂ
Jack chuckles, his eyes lighting up as he navigates the streets, âWell you never know when the cops are going to show up. Iâm just trying to keep the night alive.âÂ
âOh, is that whatâs happening?â You respond, glancing out the window at the familiar neighbourhood passing by - Jackâs quick, snarky responses helping ease a little bit of tension.Â
âOh yeah, this whole thing is going to be the best date youâve ever had.âÂ
âItâs the only date Iâve ever had.â You correct quickly, noticing the quick and very dramatic eye roll from Jack as he takes a familiar turn. âIs this leading to the lake?â Your question is ignored another turn onto a quieter street making you shoot a quick glance over to the man besides you, a knowing brow raised.Â
âStop trying to ruin the surprise.â He groans.Â
âWhat if I donât like surprises?â You huff, Jack letting out another groan, the smile on his face growing as he slows the car to a stop.Â
âTrust me, youâll like this one.â He says as he turns off the ignition, sliding out of the car as he races around to your side, quickly yanking the door open before you get a chance to open it yourself. âMy lady.â He says as he offers you a hand to help you out of the car.Â
You can see the sun descending in the sky as you adjust your dress, watching as Jack shoves the car door closed before holding out his hand for you to take. âHave you brought me here to murder me?â You joke, looking out to the lake, the sun setting a golden glow to the water, Jackâs squeezing yours as he swings them between the two of you.Â
âHmmmm, undecided.â He hums - his steps slowing as you take in the set up before you.Â
The plaid picnic blanket laid on the soft grass, a large assortment of snack laid across the mat as well as two canvases and some paints in the middle. âThese are for you.â Jack says as he lets go of your hand to reach down to the picnic blanket picking up the bouquet of daisies sitting on top of the picnic basket, holding them out to you with a wide grin.Â
âOh my god, Jack.â You gasp taking in the set up basked in the warm glow of the sunset with a look of awe, quickly taking the flowers from his hands to lift to your nose. âI didnât know your brain could even imagine something this romantic.â You tease as he ushers you forwards onto the picnic mat, taking the spot opposite you as he lets out a soft chuckle at your words.Â
âWell Iâm glad I can still surprise you after so long.â He says pulling two champagne glasses from the basket, reaching in to pull out a bottle of freshly squeezed lemonade.Â
âNo, seriously Jack this is amazing.â You continue, gratefully accepting a glass of lemonade from him, taking a long sip as you stretch out your legs.Â
âJust wait until you see desert.â He says with a mischievous grin, clinking his non-alcoholic beverage against yours, âto spontaneous adventures.â He says.Â
âTo spontaneous adventures.â You echo, feeling the warmth of the setting sun wash over you as you settle more onto the blanket, taking in the scene again in amazement. âSo are we just gonna sit here or are we going to do some painting?â You ask.Â
âLetâs eat some snacks first.â Jack says, picking some cheese and crackers off the charcuterie board before popping them into his mouth and motioning for you to do the same. The tension you felt earlier melts away with each shared smile and joke.
âSo tell me honestly,â you start, swallowing whatâs left of the food in your mouth before continuing. âWhat inspired this whole set up? I mean a picnic and painting, seems a little out of the ordinary.âÂ
Jack leans forwards, a mock-serious look on his face as he speaks, âWell I realised weâve spent so much time together as friends, I want to see if I could pull of something a little more⊠special?â He pauses for a moment sensing the shift as he adds, âBesides, Iâve always wanted to paint a sunset.âÂ
You raise an eyebrow, a teasing smile creeping onto your lips. âYou wanted to impress me with your artistic side? Are you sure youâre not just trying to cover up your terrible drawing skills?â
He throws his head back and laughs, the sound rich and contagious. âFair point! But Iâm confident in my abilities. Just wait until you see my masterpiece!â
With a sense of excitement bubbling in your chest, you reach for one of the canvases and set it on the blanket. âAlright, letâs see what youâve got, Picasso.â
âWatch and learn,â he says dramatically, picking up a brush and swirling it through the paint. You canât help but giggle at his theatrics as he begins to paint, his tongue poking out in concentration.
As you start to create your own piece, you steal glances at him, noticing the way the setting sun casts a golden light on his face, highlighting his features in a way that makes your heart flutter. You canât help but feel that this moment is something specialâsomething more than just a casual outing.
âOkay, timeâs up!â Jack declares after a few minutes, throwing down his brush. âLetâs see what weâve created.â
You both hold up your canvases, and the sight makes you burst into laughter. His painting is a chaotic blend of colors that vaguely resembles the sunset, while yours is a collection of abstract shapes and splashes that, while lacking realism, feels vibrant and alive.
âItâs⊠unique,â you say, struggling to contain your giggles.
âJust like us,â he replies, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
As you both continue to joke and critique each otherâs work, the last rays of sunlight disappear, leaving a deepening twilight around you.Â
âHey,â Jack says, his voice softer now. âIâm really glad youâre here. This was my favorite idea yet.â
âMine too,â you admit, your heart swelling at his sincerity. âThank you for putting all this together. Itâs perfect.â
He leans a little closer, the air between you charged with an unspoken tension. âJust wait until the stars come out. I think I have one more surprise.â
âAnother surprise?â you ask, intrigued. âYouâre going to give me a heart attack at this rate.â
He chuckles, then reaches into the basket, pulling out a small, twinkling string of lights. âI thought we could add some ambiance.â
Your eyes widen in delight as he begins to drape the lights around the picnic setup, the soft glow illuminating your surroundings. It transforms the scene, creating an intimate atmosphere that feels like itâs straight out of a movie. As the stars begin to twinkle above, you lean back on your hands, stealing glances at Jack, whoâs focused intently on arranging the lights. Thereâs a warmth in your chest, a budding hope that maybe this night could lead to something more.
âAlright, now for the grand finale,â he says, turning to you with a playful grin. âDessert time!â
You sit up, your curiosity piqued. âWhat did you bring?âHe rummages through the basket, finally producing a small cake adorned with whipped cream and strawberries. âTada! Strawberry shortcake. Thought it would be fitting.â
Your eyes light up. âYou really went all out, huh?â
âOnly the best for you,â he repeats, handing you a slice before cutting himself a piece. The two of you dig into the soft cake, watching as the sun disappears behind the houses, the start shining a bright white as you finish off the dessert, the side of your face burning.Â
Turning your head slowly, to glance towards Jack youâre surprised when you eyes meet his, his gaze travelling over your face before he tilts his head, putting his empty plate down besides him and shuffling forwards on the picnic mat, his hand reaching out towards your face.Â
âHere, you have a little bit of cream on your chin.â He whispers, his body radiating warmth as his finger gently swipe just below your lip, your body shivering slightly as he pulls his thumb away dipping it his mouth quickly to get rid of any evidence of the food he just removed from your face. âAre you cold? Maybe we should start heading back?â He says quickly, his eyes locked with yours as your shake your head quickly.Â
âI donât think the cold is the problem.â You try to joke, your hesitant chuckle getting caught in your throat as Jackâs eye light in knowing.Â
âOh.â He says softly, his hand hovering awkwardly in mid air as he contemplates the choices he has - your body frozen as you wait for him to decide. âIs it weird to kiss on the first date?â He asks nervously, your shoulders shrugging as you respond.Â
âYou tell me, Jack.âÂ
âI donât want to make you uncomfortable.â He whispers, his body shifting closer ever so slightly as he hand reaches up to cup the side of your neck, your eyes searching his.Â
âYouâre not.â You say softer then you thought was possible, the anticipation building in the bit of your stomach, his thumb rubbing soft circles against the burning skin on your neck. Jack pauses for just a moment before leaning forwards to close this distance, his lips capturing yours in a kiss so soft you barely even register that theyâre touching.Â
You sigh into his mouth as your hand reaches up to cup the side of his jaw, your movements all the permission he needs to press his lips firmer against yours as his other hand reaches up to cup the other side of your neck, his thumbs gliding along the underside of your jaw, his hands pulling you closer towards him as your lips move in sync.Â
âWait.â He says softly as he pulls away, his hands moving up to cup your cheeks, as he smiles, leaning forwards to press one more chaste kiss against your mouth before releasing you, and letting out a shuddered breath. âThe mosquitos are gonna come out soon, we should head home.â He says, and you nod, your lips still tingling from where his lips were pressed against them, your head nodding as Jack makes quick work of packing up the date.Â
His hands held out to help you up off the ground as he folds the blanket up quickly, rushing to bring everything to his car and shove it into his trunk. You meet him at his car, pressing your lips together to try and ease the swelling you know will be starting to show.Â
âWell, if I donât win this competition, Iâm gonna say itâs rigged.â Jack jokes as he closes the trunk of his car running a hand through his hair as his words give your pause.Â
The bet.Â
You forgot about the stupid fucking bet with his brothers.Â
âOh.â You laugh, tucking your hair behind your ears in embarrassment.Â
How could you forget about the whole reason he was doing this?Â
The only reason he was doing this.Â
âYeah, I donât know how theyâre going to top that performance.â You let out another tense laugh as you open your own passenger door and slide into the car - trying to ignore the way Jack tilts his head in confusion at your sudden shift.Â
âYou feeling okay?â He asks as he follows you into the car.Â
âYeah, just really tired all of a sudden.âÂ
âWe better get you home then.â Jackâs smile is gentle, as he places his hand on the head rest of your seat before reversing back onto the main road - your body folding in on itself as he makes quick work of the drive home - his hand resting awkwardly between the two of you, as if he was waiting for something.Â
âAre you sure youâre okay?â Jack asks as he pulls into the driveway, killing the ignition of the car before turning to face you, âThat kiss didnât make things weird did it?âÂ
âNo, Jack.â You say quickly, adding âItâs just part of the competition, right?â You donât glance at him as you let yourself out of the car, hurrying back inside to escape to your room.Â
Stupid fucking competition.Â

đ€Ł He is screaming an 'idgaf' energy (i like it). They're so cute! Their rollerblades are so colorful đ
Look at that group photo. Jack and Luke look like they wanna be there. While, Quinn looks like he was forced to (probably just coz of the sun glaring at his eyes but that won't be funny). Plus Luke is holding onto him to keep him in the photo đ

Fakers
Jack Hughes x fem!reader
summary: reader needs jack to be her fake boyfriend, and it leads to something very not fake
notes: hello!! itâs literally 2am and i just finished this, so needless to say itâs unedited, but i love this fic so much. i combined two different requests for it and i had so much fun with it. i hope you enjoy!! happy reading!! đ«¶đŒ
request: from my 400 follower celly - You owe me.â âI owe you $20 not a day of pretending to be your partner to get your parents off your backâ & âA realizing that they have feelings for B when they see them with someone elseâ
[5.4k]
âJack! Please tell me youâre home. Itâs an emergency!â you frantically slam his apartment door shut.
Searching the large space for any signs of life, you beg for him to be home.
âJack! Câmon! Itâs urgent!â you yell out, walking down the hallway towards his bedroom.
You twist the knob of the closed door, finding it locked. Huffing, you start beating your fist against the wood.
âOpen up! I know youâre in there!â
You continue your assault on the door, stopping only when the door opens and your fist meets air. You step back in surprise, nearly hitting Jack square in his bare chest.
A soaking wet, shirtless Jack stands in front of you with a towel wrapped around his waist.
âGod, what took you so long? I texted you SOS on my way over here,â you barreled past him, walking into his bedroom.
âOh, Iâm sorry, itâs not like I just had a grueling three-hour practice or anything. God forbid I take a hot shower afterwards,â Jack throws his hands up in the air, watching you walk straight for his closet.
You and jack had been friends since the second you moved to Jersey, the sassy brunette being just what you needed to make you feel at home in the unfamiliar state.
As you were moving in down the hall, Jack had half of the team over at his apartment watching game film in preparation for a week of road games.
Him and few teammates walked out into the hallway to investigate the loud bangs they kept hearing, watching you try to squeeze a bookshelf into your apartment that was three times the size of the doorway.
An hour later you had a disassembled bookshelf and four very attractive men in your living room.
Jack had recruited some of his teammates, as you later learned, to help you put the bookshelf back together.
You apologized for interrupting their plans, the rest of Jackâs teammates still in his apartment, and insisted they go back to their friends. You told them you could handle putting back together a bookshelf, even though you had absolutely no idea what you were doing.
They waved off your concerns, telling you they needed to help you finish what they started.
After the bookshelf was put together and in place, Jack invited you over to his apartment, deciding they had watched enough film for that night, using the incentive of pizza to lure you. You wouldâve objected, seeing as he invited you into an apartment full of strange men, but the pang of hunger in your stomach threw all caution to the wind, leading your feet three doors down and into the strange apartment.
You gained a whole group of friends that night, not knowing until a week later your new friends were Jerseyâs own professional hockey team.
Jack and Luke helped you finish the rest of your move in, spending more and more time with your new neighbors as the days went on. You added weekly take out dinners into your schedules and alternating hockey watch parties in each otherâs apartments, the brothers insisting you need to learn to love the game.
You canât deny the fact that you started developing feelings for the middle Hughes pretty quickly, his fun energy and magnetic personality roping you in. The nature of your friendship was extremely laid back, the two of you bickering nearly as much as you made the other laugh. Luke often said the two of you either act like an old married couple or newlyweds that already resent each other.
It didnât take long for you to figure out, however, that Jack was too focused on living the hockey lifestyle to settle down anytime soon. You noticed the flow of girls in and out of his apartment, having met a few on their way out in the mornings on your way to work.
Attempting to push your feelings to the back of your mind, you continued spending time with the rowdy athletes. A small part of you still held out hope, especially after Jack gave you a key to their apartment, telling you he was tired of having to get the door every time you decided you wanted to come over.
Which is exactly how you were able to enter his apartment now, in your desperate time of need.
You knew your parents were going to visit you once you had settled in. The piece of information they left out, though, was that they scheduled a dinner with the lawyer son of one of your dadâs coworkers that also happens to live in the city.
Now, sifting through his closet in search of an outfit appropriate for the high-end restaurant your parents reserved for tonight, you worry about Jackâs reaction to your â and now his â predicament.
âJack, donât you own anything that isnât designer? I donât want my parents to think youâre a douche throwing his money in everyoneâs face,â you slide each Tom Ford, Armani, and his one Gucci suit to the side.
Jack, still standing with his hand on his open door, starts walking over to you, crossing his arms.
âSo, you not only barge into my apartment unexpectedly and interrupt my shower, but youâre now criticizing my formal wear?â he asks before realization shows on his face. âWait, what do you mean your parents? And why are you so dressed up?â he suddenly notices your floor-length, black formal dress and full face of make-up.
You turn to face him slowly, an overexaggerated, nervous smile on your face.
âWellâŠyouâreâŠmeetingmyparentstonight,â you mumble out, running your words together.
âRun that back one more time?â Jack asks you, eyes widening.
âYouâre meeting my parents tonight,â you say at a normal pace this time, doing small jazz hands.
Groaning, Jack turns away from you, placing his hands on the top of his head as he paces.
âWhat did you do?â he asks, still pacing, knowing how you are and that youâre only ever this anxious about stuff when thereâs a reason.
âOkay, so donât get mad,â you start, placing your hands out in front of you as if youâre calming down a wild animal.
âOh, great, thatâs always followed by good news,â Jack rolls his eyes, stopping to stand in front of you.
âI might have, maybe, just a little bitâŠtold my parents that you were my boyfriend,â you rush out again, closing your eyes and wincing.
Jack doesnât respond, not making a single sound. You slowly open one eye, waiting for him to start scolding you. You see him standing there, wide eyes and frozen.
âYou toldâŠparentsâŠyour boyfriend?â his broken sentence amuses you, but you have to hold in the laugh, figuring laughing at him wouldnât do you any favors right now.
âYes,â you confirm, causing Jack to close his eyes and inhale, his hand flying up to press against his forehead. âBut! Theyâre trying to set me up on a blind date with one of my dadâs stuck-up coworkerâs sons. You know I told them Iâd never date a lawyer,â you explain, stepping closer to Jack, testing the waters. âPlus, I hate being set up, Jack. One of my dating requirements is friends first, date later.â
âWhy?â Jack now pinches the bridge of his nose. âWhy in the hell would you tell your parents Iâm your boyfriend? I havenât dated in someone inâŠI donât know, three years? This shouldâve been a Luke job.â
âBecause youâre my best friend. It wouldnât have been believable with Luke because I donât know him as well as I know you,â you tell him, watching him open his mouth to argue. âPlus, you owe me.â
Jack scoffs. âOh, I owe you, huh? Do tell, what for?â
âWhen I bought your sushi last week because you forgot your wallet at the rink when I met you out for lunch.â
Jack rolls his eyes. âAre you serious? I owe you $20, not a day of pretending to be your boyfriend to get your parents off your back!â
âButâŠa day of pretending to be my boyfriend can pay your $20 debt,â you smile and tilt your head, batting your eyelashes.
Jack mulls the idea over in his head for a few moments, deciding on if heâs going to help you or not. You continue batting your eyelashes and giving Jack your trademark puppy dog eyes.
âFineâŠgive me twenty minutes and Iâll be ready,â he grumbles, shoulders deflating a little.
âYes! Thank you, thank you, thank you!â you squeal, doing a happy jump and running over to hug him.
You realize a second too late heâs still damp and very naked, jumping back and apologizing mere seconds after you made contact with his bare skin.
âIâll go wait in your living room,â you say, turning and heading towards his door.
âIâm wearing the Gucci, by the way,â he calls out as you reach the doorway.
âPlease, at least wear the Armani so they think youâre poor rich, not rich rich,â you hear him laugh as you shut his door.
Just as Jack told you, twenty minutes later youâre in his car on the way to some rooftop restaurant your parents reserved for your âfamilyâ dinner.
âSo, whatâs our story?â Jack asks, breaking the silence.
âOur story?â you repeat, confused.
âYeah, our story. Like, what was the magical moment we realized we were actually more than friends and were head over heels with one another?â he asks, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
You look over at him, a small smirk on his lips.
âDo you seriously think I went into that much detail when I stuttered out âohâŠI uhhâŠforgot to tell you, Jack and I are dating now!â when my mother mentioned Ben was joining us for dinner?â
âWell, I wouldnât put it past you.â
You scoff at him, leaning back in your seat and crossing your arms.
âWe donât have a story. Mom didnât ask questions so I didnât offer any,â you respond, looking over at him.
âWait, she didnât ask any questions? What was her response?â he asked you, glancing over at you every few seconds.
âNo? She just said it was great and to invite you to dinner too, maybe you and Ben would get along,â Jackâs furrowed brow confusing you.
âShit, Y/N, she doesnât believe you,â he sits up straight.
âShe doesnât?â
âNo, she doesnât. If she believed you then she would have told Ben not to come. If she believed you, she would have grilled you with questions and squealed with excitement. She wouldnât have just accepted the answer and told you to bring me along like some pet,â you note the worry in his tone.
Thinking about your motherâs reaction, you remember the uninterested tone she used when telling you how great it was you were with Jack. The lack of enthusiasm definitely uncharacteristic from your mom. You had just assumed she was shocked, not that she didnât believe you.
âHoly shit youâre right! She didnât believe me. What are we gonna do?â you reach down the hand resting in your lap and start picking your thumb nail on again, extremely worried theyâll see through your bullshit the second you sit down at the table.
Jack notices the anxious habit of yours, reaching over and placing his hand over your own, effectively stopping your movements.
âWe give them the best damn performance of our lives.â
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
As soon as you walk onto the open rooftop, you think you shouldâve let Jack wear his Gucci suit.
The dimly lit space is full of people in expensive looking dresses and crisp, clean suits.
You suddenly feel very underdressed.
The hostess leads you over to a table in the corner, you and Jack being the last to arrive.
Jackâs hand is held tightly in yours, the small pep talk he gave you in the elevator already forgotten.
âOh, Y/N! Youâre here!â you hear your motherâs voice as you approach the table, breaking you out of your wardrobe anxieties.
You give a tight-lipped smile, keeping yourself pressed against Jackâs side.
âWell, donât just stand there, give me a hug!â she exclaims, standing from her seat, pulling you into a bone crushing hug.
You reciprocate her actions, placing your hands on her back.
âHoney, you look so good. I hope this place has been kind to you,â she places her hands on your face, a smile beaming back at you.
You nod at her. âYeah, I love it here so far.â
She lets you go, her smile never fading.
âAlright, whereâs the hug for your old man?â you hear your dad speak from somewhere behind you, turning to see him walking towards you with open arms.
Sinking into his hug, you let yourself enjoy the feeling. Getting to spend time with your dad is a rarity, considering heâs part of a big law-firm back home. He was always working late and missing holidays when you were a kid, your experience with him why you always swore youâd never marry a lawyer like your mother did.
âI missed you, Dad,â you tell him honestly, pulling back from his embrace.
âI missed you more, kiddo,â he pats your cheek, stepping away to take his seat at the table once again.
You hear Jack clear his throat behind you, reminding him that you need to introduce him.
âOh! Mom, Dad,â you turn back and reach your hand out towards Jack, âthis is Jack, the neighbor Iâve been telling you about.â Jack squeezes you hand, reminding you heâs your boyfriend tonight, not your neighbor. âWellâŠI guess I need to introduce him as my boyfriend now, cause weâre dating!â you say a little too enthusiastically, lifting your intertwined hands for everyone to see.
Jack chuckles, bringing his free hand over to push your joined hands down.
âHi, Iâm Jack, Y/Nâs neighbor boyfriend,â he reaches over to shake your dadâs hand.
You notice your momâs skeptical smile, standing to give Jack a short, half hug.
As you scan the area, trying to find anything else to focus on other than your lack of being able to play it cool, you notice the third body at the table.
You look at the man, his jet black, scruffy hair not at all what you were expecting. He was extremely handsome, you had to give him that. His blue eyes stood out against the dark setting, his black dress shirt under his black suit jacket causing them to stand out even more.
âWell, since introductions are being made, this is Ben, Jimâs boy. He works at a firm just a few miles away, actually,â your dad beams as Ben stands, walking around the table to give Jackâs hand a firm shake.
They exchange a short greeting before Ben makes his way over to you, grabbing your hand and kissing your knuckles, taking you by surprise.
âPleasure to meet youâŠâ he trails off, keeping eye contact as he raises back up into a standing position. âBoth of you,â he adds as an afterthought, letting go of your hand and glancing at Jack.
âYeahâŠyou too,â Jackâs tone is laced with an emotion you canât quite pick up on, but the glare heâs sending Ben is extremely noticeable.
As everyone takes their seats again, Jack scoots your chair out for you before sitting in the chair beside of you, taking your hand in his and resting them on the table.
Small talk is exchanged about Jackâs job, a disapproving nod from your father, your mother asking questions about what he plans to do after his career is over, making sure to throw in digs about how young hockey players are required to retire and the fact that contract money runs out fast with the lifestyle athletes live.
Jack handles them in stride, talking about how he wants to get into coaching once his career comes to an end, but he wants to play hockey for as long as heâs physically able. He also informed your parents that his mother instilled in him how to budget, making sure his necessities are always paid before anything else gets purchased, including a retirement fund.
The conversation then shifts to you and your new job, your mother filling Ben in with side comments the whole time about how you graduated with honors and was offered a big city job right out of college. Ben looked at you the entire time you were talking, seeming genuinely interested in what you were sharing.
Once the conversation shifts to Ben, thatâs when the dinner starts going south.
âBen is in line to become a partner at his firm very soon. Itâs all his father talks about at work anymore,â your dad informs the table, laughing and slapping a hand to Benâs shoulder.
âWell, thereâs a few other guys in the running, Iâm not a shoo-in yet,â Ben responds, trying to knock down his praise a bit.
âOh, donât be so modest, Ben, our Y/N here loves an overachiever, isnât that right, darling?â your mom looks over to you.
You donât know what to say to her, stunned that she would be so blatantly obvious about her intentions in front of Ben like this.
âIâŠwellâŠYeah, I guess,â you stutter out, not sure how to respond to your motherâs words.
âDo you excel in your field, Jack?â your mom questions your fake boyfriend of the night.
He looks up from his food, not entirely sure how to handle the question. Does he tell them the truth and risk sounding like a gloating asshole, or does he play the modest card and confirm your parentâs suspicions that heâs less than?
âJack was team captain of team USA! And heâs an alternate captain for the Devils now! Heâs also one of the teamâs top point scorers,â you ramble out facts about Jackâs hockey career, sensing his hesitation.
Your fatherâs brows shoot up in surprise.
âWay to go man, sounds awesome,â Ben sounds genuinely impressed.
âThatâs something to be proud of,â is all your mother responds.
You look over at Jack in apology, the flush of his cheeks hidden by the dark surroundings.
âJack was also drafted number one overall in the NHL draft when he was only eighteen. Isnât that crazy?â you continue, not knowing how to stop the information rolling from your mouth.
âGood for you, son,â your dad says through chewing his food, earning a glare from your mother.
Jack chuckles out a thanks, kicking your foot under the table.
âAlways my biggest fan, huh babe?â Jack looks over at you, the look in his eyes telling you to stop, youâre being obvious again.
âWellâŠitâs not just your good looks that won me over,â you attempt a joke, but it didnât land very well.
Jack winces at how that sounded.
Realizing what you just said, with the current scrutiny surrounding Jackâs choice of career, you mentally palm your forehead.
âI need to use the restroom, excuse me,â you all but run away from the table.
You make your way to the small bathroom, collecting yourself and telling yourself you donât have that long left of this torturous dinner.
When you exit the bathroom, you see Ben standing there, waiting for you to come out.
âSoâŠis now a good time to tell you that I know you and Jack arenât dating?â he asks you, an amused smile on his face.
Your body turns cold, every muscle frozen in place. How does he know? Has your act really been that bad?
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â you tell him, laughing nervously.
âListen, you donât have to hide it from me. Iâm not here because I want to be set up with you. Iâm here because I need my dad to still think Iâm single,â he surprises you.
âWait, you have a girlfriend?â you ask him, shock evident in your voice.
âBoyfriend, actually. But havenât really broke that part to my parents yet.â
Your jaw drops, not believing that your parents are unknowingly trying to set you up with a gay man.
âHoly shit,â you start laughing, unable to hide stop your hand from shooting out to grip Benâs arm. âI promise Iâm not laughing because youâre gay. Iâm laughing because my parents would die if they figured out the man theyâre trying to set me up doesnât even like girls.â You want to go over there and scream this piece of information into their faces, but know itâs not your place to out Ben.
âI hate when they try to set me up with people, and I thought it would stop since I moved away, but when they told me you were coming to dinner tonight I panicked and told them I was dating Jack because I didnât want to have to dodge phone calls and ignore texts, again,â you bring your hand up to wipe the tears out of your eyes. âWho wouldâve thought I didnât even have to worry about it because thereâs more of a chance youâd be attracted to my fake boyfriend than me.â
Ben laughs with you, allowing you to lean against him.
From the dinner table, Jack can hear your laughter, turning his head to see you leaning on Ben, the two of you being entirely too close for his liking.
âWell, looks like theyâre getting along,â your mother tells your father, nodding her head in the direction of you and Ben.
Jack fully turns in his seat, watching how you talk animatedly with Ben, a large grin on your face as he returns it, looking down at you.
Something wicked swirls in Jackâs stomach, not enjoying watching you laugh with someone like you laugh with him.
He thinks back to all the times youâve been around his apartment, complaining about the latest guy you were trying to meet up with canceling on you and how angry it makes him to see you upset. He thinks about how you always complain to him about dating apps, wishing you could just meet someone naturally, going on and on about having a âmeet cuteâ like your favorite rom coms and wondering why it always makes him think about how cute you looked trying to shove that big ass bookshelf into your apartment. He thinks about the time you brought a date to one of his games, the satisfaction of seeing you in his jersey almost enough to outweigh the sudden burst of anger he felt in the middle of the game, looking up to see his arm around your shoulders, hand resting a little too close to your chest for his comfort.
He thinks about how heâs always fending off his teammates and random men at bars, not trusting their intentions with you. And the looks that he catches Luke giving the two of you when youâre arguing, his favorite activity being getting you worked up, loving how red your ears get when he keeps firing sarcasm back at your anger.
He always assumed these feelings were a general protectiveness of you and enjoyment of being around you, almost like you were his sister, never once entertaining the idea that they could be more than that.
Until now, that is. Until youâre standing there in that dress, possibly the most beautiful heâs ever seen you, leaning all over another man when you asked him to come here with you. You asked him to be your fake boyfriend, not Mr. Big Time Lawyer.
âIf youâll excuse me, I need to go make sure my girlfriend is okay,â he tells your parents, dropping his cloth napkin on the table and scooting his chair back.
Youâre still laughing with Ben, exchanging stories about the different set-ups your parents have tried on the two of you.
âYou know, even though itâs very obvious youâre not dating, I do have to admit, I can see the feelings you two have for each other,â Ben tells you, changing the subject.
âOh, no, weâre just friends,â you tell him, your cheeks flushing a bit.
Ben gives you a look, rolling his eyes. âHoney, anyone within a three-mile radius can see that that boy is smitten with you, even if he doesnât know it yet.â
You look over at Jack whoâs looking over at you and Ben.
âI donât think so,â you shake your head, deciding you can trust Ben. âI mean, I definitely have feelings for him, have for a while, but heâs not the dating type,â you laugh. âHell, he was worried about having to be my fake boyfriend, considering he hasnât dated anyone in years. Anyways, the girls I see leaving his apartment most mornings says otherwise.â
âHavenât you learned men are stupid? Someone usually has to tell them what theyâre feeling. Show them what theyâre missing out on,â he steps closer to you, the two of you only inches apart now. âJust like right now.â
You cock your head, confused at Benâs words until you hear footsteps stomping towards you.
âY/N, babe,â Jack spits out, anger radiating off of him, âcan we go somewhereâŠprivate to talk?â he puts on a tight smile, watching Ben step back away from you.
âUh, sure,â you tell him as he grabs your arm, gently leading you over to a secluded corner of the rooftop.
He stands in front of you, running his hands up his face before sweeping them through his hair.
âWhat the hell are you doing?â he asks, jutting his hand out in the direction you just came from.
âWe were just-â
âYou were âjustâ flirting with the man your parents are trying to set you up with in front of their eyes when you brought me here to show them youâre not interested,â he interrupts you, frustration clear in his tone.
âJack, you donât understand, Ben is-â
âPerfect for you? Handsome? Your parentâs dream man for you? Better than me?â he cuts you off, his last statement taking you by surprise.
âJack, whereâs this coming from? Benâs not better than you? What would ever make you think that?â your confusion turns to concern.
âOh, donât act all sad and worried now. Not when you were over here getting all close to Ben,â he waves his hands around, disgust lacing his voice as he said Benâs name, âjust mere seconds ago while I was sitting at the table with your parents, watching the whole thing and thinking about how much I love you!â he raises his voice, but not loud enough to disturb the people dining around you.
Youâre so shocked at Jackâs words that you step back from him, not believing what youâre hearing.
âJack, I-â you start once more, but Jackâs voice cuts you off.
âI know Iâm realizing this way too late, but dammit, Y/N, that man,â he points over to Ben, âis not the guy for you. I know Iâve just stood by and watched you try to go on date after date after date with men who werenât right for you, but I think I was too scared to think about what my feelings meant. Iâve ran off so many men at bars its not even funny. Hell, Iâve told my own teammates youâre off limits, thinking I was just protecting you from getting hurt. But really, all I was doing was being selfish. I was keeping you all to myself while bringing random girls home every couple of nights after having drinks, only to kick them out first thing in the morning when I woke up and had a nasty feeling in my chest,â he pauses, his tone turning from stern to soft as he takes a step towards you.
âIâm realizing that feeling was disgust. Disgust at myself for filling my time with girls that donât matter, girls that I would never be satisfied with because they werenât you. I think part of me knew from the second I saw this crazy woman at the end of the hall, trying to push a bookshelf that had to outweigh her by at least a hundred pounds, through the tiny ass door of her apartment. It was confirmed when you agreed to come to my apartment and ate pizza while goofing off with my teammates, instantly clicking with every single one of them. It settled a little deeper when you showed up at my door after I had gotten home from being on the road, demanding we watch Quinnâs hockey game because it was time for you to study hockey. It was made permanent when you showed up to your first Devils game, my name and number on your back, eyes lit up in awe like it was Christmas morning,â he continues, causing tears to sting your eyes as he reaches over to cup your face in his hands.
âI ignored it for all of this time, because I think, deep down, I was scared of losing you. I was scared that you were going to see me as this dumb, jock hockey player that lived down the hall from you and let me down easy. I was scared youâd see how absolutely out of my league you are. I was scared to be vulnerable and admit that I was in love with you, because I couldnât bear to think that you didnât love me back,â his face is mere inches from yours. âBut Iâm tired of ignoring it. Seeing you, laughing with Ben, all pressed up against him like that, thinking that I might have already lost you before I even had the chance to have you, made me realize that I had to try. I had to at leastâŠtry,â he finishes, resting his forehead against yours.
The tears are fully streaming down your face at this point, not caring that youâre likely ruining the mascara you spent over fifteen minutes perfecting earlier.
âJack, you stupid man, just kiss me already,â you whisper out, your breath fanning across his lips.
He smiles, lifting your chin up to press your lips together, sighing happily into the kiss.
You match his smile, making the kiss silly and sloppy, but you donât care. His lips feel like they were made to fit in-between yours, the softness of them far better than you had imagined.
Pulling back from the kiss, you bring your hands up to rest on his wrists, his hands still holding your face.
âYou know, if you had let me speak, I would have saved you the speech and informed you that Ben wasnât trying to make a move on me, because Ben is gay and has a boyfriend,â Jack pulls back from you, allowing you to see the shocked expression on his face. âWe were bonding over the amount of times our parents have tried to set us up with people just like this before, and then he was telling me how in love with each other we were. I was telling him how I definitely was in love with you, but I didnât believe you were in love with me,â you laugh at Jack, the situation comical now.
âI- heâs gay?â is all Jack responds with.
You throw your head back, laughing at him. âThatâs what you took away from what I just said?â
âSorry, I just, wasnât expecting it, is all,â he says, moving his hands to your neck, pushing your head back up to look at him.
âOh, so you were expecting my love confession, then?â you tease him.
âWell, duh, you did ask me to be your fake boyfriend tonight,â Jack moves his hand to pinch your cheek.
âSoâŠare you still? Fake, that is?â you ask him, placing your arms on his shoulders, clasping your hands around the back of his neck.
Jack looks down at you, the expression on his face something entirely new to you, but itâs one you can surely get used to.
âEhh, I donât knowâŠask me again the next time you need a buffer,â he shrugs, smirking at you.
You tug on a piece of his hair, causing him to hiss out.
âGeez, Iâm kidding. Of course Iâm your real boyfriend now. I gave you a monologue, weâre basically engaged at this point,â he jerks his head a bit, making your hands fall from his hair.
You know itâs a joke, but your cheeks heat at the implication anyways, Jack noticing your lack of response.
âRelax, I was just kidding. Thatâs at least three more surprise blind date dinners with your parents before we to that. Iâll even pull out a âfakeâ ring and everything,â he winks, putting air quotes around the word fake.
As Jack enjoys the sound of your laugh, he steals a glance over at the table where your parents sit, surprised at the pleased look on your momâs face and earning a slight nod from your dad.
He looks back down at you, face scrunched in laughter, thinking about how this night was worth way more than $20.
