Wanted to ramble abt my alt. Gallifreyan’s anatomy rq so here’s a lil infodump uwu. Under a cut cause it’s weird bug alien mouth anatomy.

mainly I wanted to talk abt how their mouths work cause I think what I came up with is pretty cool ngl

so obviously when their mouth is closed it’s like, you can see some teeth + the mandibles on the side but what you might not be expecting is that, when open, their mouth looks like this:

the lower “jaws” you see normally are actually the third and main set of mandibles! tucked behind that is their actual lower jaw, that lines up with a second set of teeth in the roof of their mouth behind the first set. These mandibles when not open fold back into an illusion of a human-like jaw. Gallifreyans also aren’t capable of like, human sounding speech because of how their mouth is built but also cause they don’t have a tongue. What they do have is a proboscis like appendage that usually is tucked into a hollow in their throat around where our adams apple would be. They also have a set of four smaller feelers tucked in there that work similarly to a snakes tongue, letting them taste more acutely. And that looks like this when out:

having said that, Time Lords at least don’t open their mouths all that frequently. Not in company at least. For one because, with the telepathic interface that they use to communicate, they don’t really have a reason to, since they don’t use their mouth to talk. And secondly, showing/baring most of their teeth is considered rude/a threat in Time Lord society, since they would need to fully open their mouth to do it. The Doctor, from hanging out with humans so much, has gained the habit of dropping their lower “jaws” slightly in a smile when emoting, and the higher standing Time Lords get cranky about it lmao they think it’s undignified.
