5 Dead, 25 Injured as Kanchanjunga Express Collides with Goods Train in Bengal; Rescue Operations Underway

At least five people were killed and 25 others injured on Monday when the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express collided with a goods train in West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri.Reports indicate that three coaches at the back of the Kanchanjunga Express derailed between Neechbari and Rangapani stations, part of the Indian Railways’ Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone, due to the impact of the collision. The derailment caused the coaches to fall to the side. Heavy rain in Siliguri since the morning has hampered rescue efforts to free the trapped passengers.“Five people, including the loco pilot of the Kanchanjunga Express, died on the spot. Twenty-five people are injured. We are trying to rescue those stuck. The local people are very helpful,” said Abhishek Roy, Additional SP, Kurseong, who is at the accident site.The accident, occurring on the main rail link from Kolkata to Siliguri, has disrupted long-distance train services, officials said.Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told The Indian Express that the derailed coaches were parcel coaches. According to their information, there were two casualties. “A goods train overshot and collided with the Kanchanjunga Express. Rescue operations are in full swing,” said Vaishnaw, who is monitoring the situation from the war room in Delhi.In a post on X, Vaishnaw stated that rescue operations are “going on at war footing” and that Indian Railways, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are “working in close coordination.” The injured are being transported to hospitals, and senior officials have reached the accident site, he added.

Pune Set To Receive Second Vande Bharat Express Train By April 2023

The Indian Railways is all set to introduce a new Vande Bharat Express train, replacing the Secunderabad-Pune Shatabdi Express with new rakes starting from April of this year. The new train is expected to belong to the Secunderabad rail division under the South-Central Railway. The decision to replace the Shatabdi Express with Vande Bharat rakes is in line with the railways' plan to introduce more Vande Bharat trains in the country.

Currently, there are ten Vande Bharat Express trains operating across the country, connecting various cities through a high-speed route. The Central Railway already has two Vande Bharat Express trains - from CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) to Solapur and CSMT to Shirdi. A senior official from the Central Railway stated that the response to the CSMT-Solapur Vande Bharat train is better than the one running between CSMT-Shirdi, with an average occupancy of almost 90%. This train also acts as an additional connection between Pune and Mumbai.

While the plan is to replace the Howrah-Pune Duranto Express with a Vande Bharat rake, officials have noted that it may take some time as Vande Bharat rakes currently only have chair cars for passengers, unlike the Duranto, which has sleeper classes as well. Nevertheless, the introduction of more Vande Bharat Express trains is expected to enhance travel experiences and provide better connectivity across various parts of India. 

Apart from that, Indian Railways is also planning to introduce Vande Bharat Express in Jammu and Kashmir, in order to connect the Kashmir Valley with other parts of the country. The semi-high-speed train will operate on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla route.

Furthermore, the national transporter is all set to launch its 13th Vande Bharat Express train by next month, which will run between New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and Guwahati (GHY). This will be the first Vande Bharat Express train in Assam and Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone, and the second in West Bengal. The NFR zone will operate and maintain the train, and the concerned departments have been instructed to make necessary arrangements. However, the date of inauguration, commencement of commercial services, and other details have not yet been disclosed.

The Vande Bharat Express offers passengers an aircraft-like travelling experience, with a maximum speed of 160 kmph and travel classes similar to the Shatabdi Train but with better facilities. The train's major systems have been designed and built in India, in line with the Prime Minister's vision of "Make in India"

Manipur tragedy: No more bodies found, fresh landslides reported

No recovery of bodies was reported on Tuesday after Thursday's devastating landslide in India at a railway construction site in Manipur's Noney district even as several fresh landslides caused severe challenges in wake of the disaster, officials said. Defence sources said that till Monday, 47 bodies, including 31 of Territorial Army soldiers and remaining of local people and railway workers, were recovered and search operations were underway despite inclement weather to locate the 14 still missing. Noney Deputy Commissioner Haulianlal Guite, in an advisory on Tuesday, said that continuous rock falls along the National Highway-37 between Tupul and Noney district headquarters (near Namduanjang) has been occurring since Monday night." "While the NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd) has made all efforts to clear the accumulated debris, the rock falls continue periodically, thus posing danger to life and properties for those vehicles plying along the NH-37. Given the uncertain road conditions, it is hereby ordered that NH-37 between Tupul and Namduanjang villages be closed for all vehicles, except those carrying emergency supplies. Noney district police shall give effect to this order and enforce it strictly in the interest of public order and safety," he said in the advisory. Despite fresh landslides and continuous hostile weather conditions, the intensive search operations by the Indian Army, the Assam Rifles, the Territorial Army, and the National and State Disaster Response Forces continued at the incident site at Tupul, district officials said. Senior Army and disaster management officials are camping in ground zero supervising the rescue and recovery operations in the landslide-devastated mountainous Tupul, where around 80 persons, including Territorial Army personnel, were buried alive after the catastrophic mudslide on June 30. Efforts to search for the remaining missing Territorial Army personnel and civilians would continue till the last individual is found, a defence spokesman said. The Territorial Army soldiers were deployed at Tupul to provide security to the railway project in which many workers from Assam have been working. The construction of the railway infrastructure in Noney was part of the Rs 14,320 crore broad gauge Jiribam-Imphal railway project, being executed by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), to connect the Manipur capital on the rail network by 2024. For the first time, Indian Railway has brought the commercial earnings and Non-Fare Revenue (NFR) by the use of electronic auction through, Indian Railway e-Procurement System (IREPS) with effect from June 24.

NFR (Non-fare revenue)

is the income from various sources, excluding passenger and freight receipts.

These sources include: Parcel Van, Pay & Use Toilets, Advertisement rights on station circulating area and coaches, AC waiting rooms, Cloak rooms, Parking lots, Plastic Bottle crushers, ATMs, Station co-branding, Video screens for content on demand etc.

This move will especially give a boost to small entrepreneurs and start-ups. No financial turnover requirement will be for annual contracts of up to 40 lakh.

It will end the tedious process of tendering. which requires physical registration with the concerned field unit. This makes difficult for potential bidders from the rest of India to compete. It takes time in finalization due to requirement of physical meeting of tender committee members
